Today, we dive deep into the world of a true virtuoso, Jordan Rudess, whose journey from being a classical pianist at Juilliard in New York to the keyboard wizard of Dream Theater is nothing short of extraordinary. Imagine a young prodigy, trained in the hallowed halls of Juilliard, choosing to abandon the predictable path to explore the uncharted realms of progressive rock. Much like an artist swapping the traditional canvas for the digital screen, Rudess embraces synthesizers and innovation, crafting soundscapes that transcend the ordinary. His story is a symphony of bold decisions and relentless pursuit of musical excellence. From his early days in the electronic space music band "Complex", to transforming into a titan of the prog-metal scene with Dream Theater, Jordan's career is a testament to the power of following one's passion. Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment keyboard wizard Jordan Rudess joins me to discuss his upcoming solo album, Permission to Fly. Unlike many keyboard player solo albums, which focus on the keys and often use multiple singers and musicians, this one was put together like a band album, using a consistent lineup across the record. It's a cohesive album that has its moments of keyboard pyrotechnics, but also contains a strong commitment to servicing the songs. In addition to the album, Jordan discussed his musical background, joining LTE and Dream Theater, how he ended up on David Bowie's Heathen album, his take on AI's place in creating music, and more. This week, Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater is back on the show! We discuss his upcoming North American solo tour that kicks off June 25th, the medley that he has created for the tour (which includes Liquid Tension Experiment and Dream Theater tracks), how his solo shows can be viewed as a musical autobiography, what goes into good ambient music, and how that genre brings him peace. He also talks about practicing meditation while playing the piano, his thoughts on competition when he attended Julliard, enjoying social media, what drove him to start a Patreon, and why he prefers to write music with other artists in the same room. Petar, Jozalyn, and Sylvia discuss Larrisa Stupar's decision to pause Venom Prison live shows as she takes on motherhood, Johnny Rotten's statement on anarchy being a terrible idea, and Kirk Hammett telling us all that Metallica “warned everyone” of the negative effects of streaming. Vinnie Moore is a guitar master. He's carved out a great career for himself as a solo artist, a guest musician, and as a guitarist in the legendary hard rock band UFO since 2003. Vinnie recently joined a group of well-known musicians who took part in a great tribute record called Animals Reimagined - A Tribute to Pink Floyd. Playing on the album's best track, "Dogs," Vinnie was joined by ex-Rainbow vocalist Graham Bonnet, ex-King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto, Kasim Sulton from Utopia, and Dream Theater keyboard wizard Jordan Rudess. I spoke with Vinnie about his involvement in the project, his background in music, playing on Alice Cooper's Hey Stoopid record and the ensuing tour, performing with the legendary Peter Frampton, joining UFO, his solo career, and more. Find out more about Vinnie and his music at vinniemoore.com. (He has a new solo album coming soon!)
