Kori Clark looks back on her childhood and doesn't remember a time when she didn't feel shame around food. Like many who grew up in the 70s and 80s (and the introduction of fast food), Kori LOVED Kraft Mac-n-Cheese, Chef Boyardee, and any “food” that came out of a box. As she recalls in today's episode, her food addiction and obsession go back as far as she can remember, to the point where she even remembers telling herself not to eat a piece of her own birthday cake - at just six years old. Determined to lose weight, she tried everything – Weight Watchers, Paleo, Nutri-System, even phen phen pills when those were legal. And, no surprise, she would lose weight for a time, but would inevitably self-sabotage and the weight and health issues would return.Just over a year ago, Kori watched the What the Health documentary and went down the rabbit hole of whole food, plant-based nutrition. This led to other books and documentaries including, Forks over Knives and Game Changers. She's already dropped over 120 pounds and, according to her doctors, now has the heart of an elite athlete. Even her OB-GYN was shocked that a woman could actually lose weight post-menopause!Yes, she's lost weight and improved her metabolic health, but Kori is most happy to be free from her food addiction. Hope springs eternal in the last week of June 2024. This week Julian Assange was finally freed from his 12-year-long unjustified imprisonment for daring to expose the lies and war crimes of the U.S. foreign policy intelligentsia. In a truly just world these people would be tried for their crimes, but for now, we will settle for righting the wrong of keeping Assange in prison for exposing their misdeeds to the world. Also this week, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a 40-year-old precedent known as "Chevron Deference" which eroded everything we were taught about how the system of checks and balances was supposed to keep the people safe from too much power being collected in one branch of government. Now legislators have to return to legislating more prudently, judges judging more wisely, and executive agency bureaucrats have to return to their place simply enforcing the law instead of making it up. Timestamp (12:31) Gypsy Rose Blanchard was born in July 1991.  From the time she was an infant, her mother Dee Dee claimed that Gypsy was ill with conditions such as sleep apnea, leukemia and muscular dystrophy.  Gypsy lived her life in a wheelchair and endured many surgeries and rounds of medication.  Gypsy and Dee Dee were given a home in Springfield, Missouri after their home in Louisiana was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.  By this time, Gypsy was an adult and was trying to break free from her mother's control. Gypsy met a man named Nicholas Godejohn online.  Gypsy would eventually pay for Nicholas to travel to Missouri where the two would carry out their plan to kill Dee Dee and to free Gypsy.  After the murder, it was discovered that Gypsy had never been sick.  Dee Dee had manipulated her daughter and health care professionals into believing that Gypsy was seriously ill.  Gypsy has recently been freed from prison after serving eight years for her role in the murder of her mother.  In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss case of Gypsy Rose and Dee Dee Blanchard.
