Always armed with a pen and something sharp to say, James was the perfect victim for What The Luxe's first video episode. He and Anant begin by debunking innovation myths and misconceptions surrounding the U/HNW cohort before moving through the subjects of status, digital assets, healthy friction in the customer experience, the importance of rewarding behaviours, creating ritual and the industry's tendency to conflate observation with insight – punctuated with subtle innovation anecdotes and valuable case studies.

We have our first bonus episode on the show! Last week, Neil Andrew from PPC Protect joined us to discuss industry awards and whether they add value to businesses or not. When we shared the episode across social media, several people got in touch to express their own opinions and share their experiences when entering industry awards. One of those people was James Lees from Salesfire. James said he'd love to share his thoughts in detail and had some contrasting views to Neil. So, here we are! During this bonus episode, James shares some of the things that Neil shared which he disagrees with. We talk about some of the awards that James has won over the years and the impact those wins had on his businesses at the time. James is also part of the judging panel for several awards so he discussed the process that he takes when selecting a winner. We also discussed how the awards industry can hold people accountable and collaborate to improve its reputation amongst marketers and business owners in the future. Finally, James shares some tips on how to promote an award win and use it to strengthen your brand. In this rather delayed episode, we say farewell to an old friend: the Arecibo Radio Telescope in Puerto Rico, tragically destroyed at the start of December 2020 after 57 years of solid service. Today we talk about self-talk, while talking to each other, while self talk unconsciously happens in such a way that you can’t hear it, unless we say it out loud, which is where the real weirdness happens.

Initially active from 1991 to 1996, Chalk rose from humble origins in an East Brisbane sharehouse to release a string of EPs: "Immortality" and "Iris" in 1994 and "Burlesque" in 1995. After calling it quits the band members went on to play in various other projects before reuniting for a show at The Zoo in 2014. Since then the band have recorded their very first album, "The Quiet City", released 24 years after their last EP. In August 2019 Chalk got together once more to launch the album, featuring James Kliemt on vocals and guitar, James Lees on keys/percussion/drums, Steve Swart on bass, Dave Gilbert on guitars/vocals plus additional players Richard Johnston on drums, Adam Cadell on violin, album producer James North on keys/guitar/vocals and a cameo spot from original member Matthew Clark on vocals. Recorded live at The Zoo in Fortitude Valley on the 9th of August 2019.
Group Think is a London-based strategy community that gets people together to think, drink, and discuss. They have 500+ members. Here's an interview with James Lees (strategist at Sword and Stone) and Arthur Perez (Head of marketing and brand strategy at Depop) from Group Think in which I share 9 or 10 generalizations of things I've been hearing to see how London feels about planning. Points I ask them to consider include: 1. Not many agencies are clear on why they exist 2. "Advertising" has become a dirty word 3. "Going upstream" - is it really a thing? 4. The strategy career is amazing but many agencies don't know how to make it work 5. The confusion of the job title sprawl For the video, visit http://www.sweathead.co Group Think: http://www.group-think.co.uk/ James: http://twitter.com/jameslees101 Arthur: http://twitter.com/arezpe You can find Mark at http://www.twitter.com/markpollard

Matthew Parris's guest is Dame Helen Ghosh, Director General of the National Trust, who chooses as her Great Life James Lees-Milne who worked for the Trust between 1936 and 1966. He was responsible for acquiring many of the Trust's most iconic properties and his particular talent was his ability to persuade the aristocratic owners of the houses into handing them over to the Trust for protection. His other talent was in writing, and it is his deliciously indiscreet diaries for which many people know him. Merlin Waterson, who was a friend of Lees-Milne's, is the expert witness. Producer Christine Hall.
