Post-Gazette Pirates insider Noah Hiles reports the latest of what he's hearing about the Pirates' dealings ahead of the MLB trade deadline next week. Are the rumors that Ben Cherington will be fired as GM soon actually bunk? And what power will he have to make a major deal before the deadline in the eyes of owner Bob Nutting? Are the New York Yankees making a play for Mitch Keller? Perhaps more so than the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs? What's a reasonable return for him in a deal? And is moving Ke'Bryan Hayes' contract a priority? Possible with rental options including Tommy Pham, Isiah Kiner-Falefa or Caleb Ferguson? Noah tackles those questions and more.

The Pirates just swept the Mets and took the series from the Cardinals, and somehow we're starting to believe again. In this episode of the North Shore Nine Postgame Show, Tyler and Doug break down the Bucs' fifth straight win — a 1-0 nailbiter behind Paul Skenes' “struggling” five shutout innings, a clutch sac fly from Henry Davis, and game-saving defense from Tommy Pham and Spencer Horwitz. They also give flowers to Caleb Ferguson and Isaac Mattson, debate the Pirates' sudden cohesion under Don Kelly, and ask the question we're all thinking: what if they just win 10 in a row? Oh, and they give away sandwiches.

Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to react to the week in Pittsburgh sports news. Is Aaron Rodgers delaying his deal with the Steelers out of fear of losing his job like Kirk Cousins did to Michael Penix Jr. with the Atlanta Falcons last season? As Fox Sports insider Jason McIntyre has speculated? What should we make of Justin Fields' comments to reporters, in which he said he didn't feel "comfortable" with Mike Tomlin and the Steelers following his midseason benching in favor of Russell Wilson? How seriously should the GM Omar Khan be taking Shedeur Sanders as a draft option? Whether or not Rodgers signs? And was T.J. Watt being cryptic in an Instagram post in which he gave a peace sign? Or are fans and observers looking too far into it and what it means for his future with the Steelers? Our duo tackles those questions and more. In the second and third segments, airing on the Post-Gazette's new Pirates YouTube channel, the guys give their thoughts on a busy week for the Pirates on and off the field. How much criticism does team president Travis Williams deserve for the Bucco Bricks fiasco, the bungled tribute to Roberto Clemente, attendance issues and the state of PNC Park? Are the problems with the Pirates as a business eclipsing their shortcomings on the field? And how much is owner Bob Nutting paying attention to his club's issues amid relentless chants for him to "sell the team" that started at the home opener last weekend and have not subsided? Our duo tackles those questions, then analyzes on-field performance in the second segment. Should we worry about a small dip in Paul Skenes' velocity in his worst start as a Pirates on Tuesday in a loss to the Cardinals? Are Justin Lawrence, Denis Santana and Caleb Ferguson the answers manager Derek Shelton has been looking for in the bullpen following struggles from David Bendar and Colin Holderman in high-leverage roles? Should we be more encouraged or discouraged by Ke'Bryan Hayes' start to the season offensively? How much grace will veterans Tommy Pham and Adam Frazier get amid their struggles? And how important does Andrew McCutchen remain to this lineup? If you haven't already, subscribe to the sports department's YouTube channels so you don't miss a video with our reporters, columnists and their special guests.
Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Noah Hiles and Andrew Destin discuss their key takeaways from the team's 7-6 win vs. the Blue Jays on Wednesday afternoon — after a lengthy rain delay — at LECOM Park in Bradenton, Fla. After hitting another home run Wednesday, what kind of power numbers can we expect from Oneil Cruz now that he is fully recovered from the leg injury that hampered him through the early parts of last season? Ryan Borucki also impressed again, pitching his fourth scoreless frame of the preseason. How might Borucki factor in to the Pirates bullpen, which features other lefties like Caleb Ferguson, Tim Mayza and Joey Wentz? Finally, the guys discuss Mitch Keller, as he became the first Pirates pitcher of the spring to go more than three innings. Is this a sign the starters are beginning to ramp up for the early weeks of the regular season? Our duo answers those questions and more.
Pirates insiders Noah Hiles and Andrew Destin analyze a win over the Twins as Pittsburgh starts spring training 2-0. Mitch Keller came out with high velocity, which is a stark difference from a year ago. What does it mean for the former All-Star moving forward? Plus some first impressions from Caleb Ferguson's time on the mound, and an impressive appearance from first-round pick Konnor Griffin at the plate.
In our latest podcast episode, we discuss the upcoming International signing period for the Pittsburgh Pirates. They've been linked to a few names heading into the signing period, what among that group has stood out?We then shift to our thoughts on Caleb Ferguson signing, and how that may impact the bullpen this year. We also go more in depth on the bullpen and how we feel about it going into the season as it stands plus a non-roster invite we are watching in camp.Bucs On Deck is a reader-supported publication. Jason projected that the Pirates will yet again have a bottom three payroll in baseball. Jason gave his score prediction for Steelers-Ravens, and he likes the Ravens 24-14, citing a costly Steelers turnover.

Houston Astros manager Joe Espada joins The Matt Thomas Show following Monday's 4-3 walk-off loss in the 10th inning. The Astros were one out away from taking the first of a three-game series against the Texas Rangers before Josh Smith hit a two-run homer off reliever Caleb Ferguson. Despite a quality start from Hunter Brown, who allowed one run on three hits and two walks over six innings, the Astros offense continued to struggle, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, including 1-for-7 with the bases loaded. "We've gotten away from who we are as an offense," but "we'll snap out of it," Espada said. "There's no denying" that "fatigue sets in, both mentally and physically...we have to fight and grind through it." Pedro Leon was called up from Triple-A Sugar Land and made his Major League debut Saturday in right field. Leon has "the athleticism and the explosiveness," and we "will continue to give him some opportunities." General manager Dana Brown suggested that the Astros could call up Shay Whitcomb and/or Zach Dezenzo, and Espada relayed that message, saying they are "strongly considering bringing those guys up." Young players "can give some of our veterans" rest, but "you want them to land on their feet" when they get to the Majors. Yusei Kikuchi made his Astros debut Friday, pitching 5.2 innings and giving up three hits, two earned runs and three walks. Kikuchi is expected to return to the mound for the Astros on Wednesday. "I expect him to go out there and have another strong performance."
Matt Thomas and Ross Villarreal of The Matt Thomas Show review the Houston Astros losing 4-3 to the Texas Rangers following a walk-off home run in the 10th inning. Hunter Brown earned a quality start, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over six innings while striking out four. However, Ryan Pressly and Caleb Ferguson would give up home runs late to hand the Astros their third straight defeat. Manager Joe Espada joins to discuss how the offense is continuing to slump, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring positions, including 1-for-7 with the bases loaded on Monday. Matt and Ross react to the Astros calling up Zach Dezenzo, talk about Tytus Howard and Stefon Diggs getting shaken up at Texans training camp, comment on Charles Barkley announcing his intent to remain with TNT Sports, give their latest "Gut Feelings" and more.
