In the first of 30 organizational deep dives, Carlos Collazo and JJ Cooper take an in-depth look at the Atlanta Braves farm system. They look at what the Braves have produced lately, why they are so pitching heavy, and what holes they can't fill internally. The Atlanta Braves are coming off of a fantastic home stand that saw them go 5-1 after they finished off a sweep vs the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. The only loss in the homestand came in the 2nd career start for rookie Hurston Waldrep, where he went 3.1 innings giving up six earned runs, but didn't even take the loss in the game, as the Braves came back and tied the game, only to lose it late. Chris Sale, Reynaldo Lopez, and Max Fried all made great starts in the homestand, giving up a combined three earned runs between them. Spencer Schwellenbach continued to pitch well, and even got his first career win in his start. But let's face it, they beat up on the Tampa Bay Rays and Detroit Tigers, both of which have a sub .500 record. That's not to take anything away from the great homestand, as for the last month the Braves have not been beating the teams that they need to beat, such as the Nationals. Championship teams beat up on the teams that than they are better than, and that is what the Braves are starting to do. Now comes a real test (no offense Rays and Tigers). The Braves are headed to New York to face quite possibly the best two power hitters in the game today, in Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, in a three-game series at Yankee Stadium. Braves manager Brian Snitker has aligned the rotation so that the Yankees will face Sale, Morton, and Fried respectively, so there will be no excuses to be made after this series. Andy Bunker and Randy McMichael talk about the recent Braves turnaround, and what this means for the Braves moving forward.

The Braves scored twenty- two runs vs. the Rays over the weekend in Atlanta. David & Eric begin with the recent offensive surge and point to the four homers that Atlanta hit in Saturday's 9-2 victory. (04:00) Michael Harris II injured his hamstring in Friday night's 7-3 win and has placed on the IL. Harris was diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring strain and David notes the severity of the injury. Jared Kelenic moved over to replace Harris in CF and also hit leadoff on Saturday and Sunday. (16:00) The Braves currently do not have solidified fifth starter. Hurston Waldrep struggled in his second career start on Sunday as he gave up six runs against Tampa Bay in less than four innings of work. Following the outing, Waldrep was optioned to AAA-Gwinett. This leads to an extended discussion on the team's starting rotation. (32:00) Austin Riley's homer on Sunday carried additional emotional weight as one of his mentors and former Braves hitting instructor Mike Brumley tragically passed away in a car accident overnight at sixty-one years old. The Nats topped the Braves 8-5 on Sunday afternoon to end the weekend with three consecutive victories. Mark & Al discuss the Nationals second series win over Atlanta in just the past few weeks. (05:00) Keibert Ruiz had a big day as he hit a 3 run homer and knocked in four runs. Ruiz's home run was part of a seven run inning for Washington in the bottom of the 4th while facing a rookie pitcher (Hurston Waldrep). (16:00) DJ Herz had a short outing and Mark analyzes what he has seen from the lefty so far. Before the game it was announced that Patrick Corbin's next start was pushed back a few days and won't pitch in Detroit. Is this a sign that he is on way from being out of the rotation? (23:00) Kyle Finnegan was unexpectedly needed to record the final three outs as Jordan Weems struggled with a six run lead in the final inning. Weems had a bad homestand and his ERA for the year is at 7.13. (29:00) Sean Doolittle was elevated for the weekend as the pitching coach Jim Hickey was away. Will the positive press that Doolittle is garnering lead to him getting other job offers after the season? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Well, Manoah is having surgery, but I haven't seen the exact surgery yet. Robert Gasser is on his third opinion on what to do with his UCL team. Just a PSA3. The Braves keep churning through pitchers. It's now Hurston Waldrep's time as Spencer Schwellenbach didn't work out.4. Adael Amador gets the call. I just saw him in Somerset (Double-A) on Thursday. Any interest?5. Nico Hoerner has a small fracture. No IL list yet. If he goes on IL, who gets his playing time?6. Kyle Tucker hits the IL, and our buddy Joey Loperfido is recalled.7. The Atlanta Braves are scuffling right now, and that may be putting it lightly. On top of that, the Philadelphia Phillies are now nine games up on the Braves for the lead in the National League East, and Philadelphia radio pundits are chirping about the division race being over... in early June! (The Mets made this proclamation in 2022 btw). So what is going on? While losing Spencer Strider was indeed a huge blow, the pitching staff as a whole has held it together very well. Losing Ronald Acuña Jr was also a seemingly insurmountable loss, but Acuña Jr was having one of the worst seasons of his career. Where does the blame get placed? Brian Snitker is not mis-managing games; It seems that the best offense in MLB last season is simply just not performing. Is it a trade deadline shot in the arm that they need? It could be, but where should it go? The Braves could go out and trade for starting pitching, but is that really what they need? Both Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep looked good in the early innings of their first starts, but neither guy could hold it together in the middle innings. At this point, you have to find out what they can do with further opportunities, no? It is highly likely, based on history, that Alex Anthopoulos will make4 a trade before or at the deadline, and that trade will work out nicely. But until then, can these guys just start playing better?
The Braves won the opener on Thursday, but ended their weekend in D.C. with three straight losses. David & Eric begin with a surprising milestone as Jesse Chavez recorded the 1000th strikeout of his career on Sunday. Chavez made his MLB debut all the way back on August 27, 2008 . (12:00) The offense struggled over the weekend and only scored a combined four runs on Friday and Saturday. Austin Riley is emblematic of this as he his hitting .230 this season and his OPS is at .648. (21:10) A look at who might represent the Braves at next month's All Star Game in Texas. They definitely will not match last years total of eight representatives at the Midsummer Classic. (29:00) Analysis of Hurston Waldrep's MLB debut on Sunday. Waldrep was charged with seven runs and was pulled in the bottom of the 4th in the loss. Eric explains why he hopes that Waldrep is given at least one more start in the majors before being sent back down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Atlanta Braves fought their way through a challenging May, so will June once again be the month this club puts it all together? That's been the case each of the last two seasons. Grant McAuley discusses all the Braves news of the past week and looks ahead to the three-city road trip which begins on Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox. Chris Sale, Max Fried and the rest of the starting rotation have done more than their fair share this season, even with the fifth spot still unsettled. Can they continue to post up while the offense gets back on track? Could young arms like Spencer Schwellenbach, Hurston Waldrep and others step into that final spot? With Ronald Acuña Jr. out for the remainder of 2024, who will step into the leadoff role and how will Brian Snitker balance the rest of his lineup as they try to shake off a collective cold spell? You'll also hear from Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos, who appeared on 92-9 The Game on Friday to chat with Carl Dukes and Mike Bell. Where does the Atlanta executive stand on the challenges his club is facing and the need for reinforcements? That and more on this week's show. As the Braves find themselves chasing the Phillies, we take a look at the NL East race with Casey Stern, host of "Unfiltered" on the Bleav Network. We'll also try to make sense of the mess the New York Mets found themselves in with a strange turn of events surrounding former reliever Jorge Lopez. Also on the show, longtime catcher and current Foul Territory host Erik Kratz joins the show to dish on the Phillies, the Braves overcoming the loss of Acuña, unpack the "retirement" of Angel Hernandez, and chat about the process of writing his autobiography, "The Tao of the Backup Catcher," which is available wherever books are sold. From The Diamond airs live on 92-9 The Game in Atlanta on Sundays from 5-7 pm ET. You can also subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Every episode of the show and more great Braves coverage is available at FromTheDiamond.com.
