Seasons Greetings everyone! We're taking a month off franchises and raising our glasses to toast some of our favorite one off holiday and Christmas inspired horror movies. Up first we have the black comedy "home invasion" thriller from Chris Peckover, Better Watch Out. This is one of the more divisive titles we covered as fans either love how it subverts the viewers expectations when it pulls the rug out from them at the end of the first act, or they can't stand Luke, the smiling, slimy central antagonist that oozes privilege, sociopathy and toxic masculinity. All this wrapped in a package that subverts those warm and fuzzy memories of the John Hughes teen comedy and family friendly movies of the 80s and 90s. It's a fun discussion with Mike, Devaughn, Nichole and special guest Jason Seaver of the Boston Horror Society.

Danny Tanner. Heathcliff Huxtable. Jason Seaver. Edna Garrett. Harriet Winslow. What do all of these beloved TV characters have in common? Why, the topic of this week's Overlap Podcast, of course… Without the colorful sweaters, zany plotlines, Stamoses and Alan Thicke-penned theme tunes to prop them up like the aforementioned characters, our boys Sid and Keith will use this week's episode to explore the parallels between running your business and parenting your families - because your work family and your real family have more similarities than you might find at first glance … and hopefully you aren't having to potty train any of your employees… You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have … this week's Overlap Podcast.

The Seaver family resides at 15 Robin Hood Lane in Huntington, Long Island, New York.[2] Dr. Jason Seaver (portrayed by Alan Thicke), a psychiatrist, works from home because his wife, Maggie (Joanna Kerns), has gone back to work as a reporter. Jason has to take care of the kids: ladies' man Mike (Kirk Cameron), bookish honors student Carol (Tracey Gold), and rambunctious Ben (Jeremy Miller). A fourth child, Chrissy Seaver (twins Kelsey and Kirsten Dohring; Ashley Johnson), is born on October 27, 1988, a day after Ben's 12th birthday. She was played in her newborn/infant stage by two uncredited sets of twin sisters , that remained in the role until the end of season four (1988-89). By season five (1989–90), she was played in her toddler stage by alternating twins Kirsten and Kelsey Dohring. In seasons six and seven (1990–92), Chrissy's age was advanced to five years old. A new cast member was added for the seventh and final season (1991-92) when homeless teen Luke Brower (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brought into the Seaver family to live with them until nearly the end of season seven. Often mentioned but rarely seen are the Seavers' next door neighbors the Koosmans - a reference to the 1969 Miracle Mets.

I was thinking about Growing Pains on this walk--the old TV show. I was thinking about how the dad, Jason Seaver (Alan Thicke), worked at home; he was a psychologist with a private practice in an office right off the family living room. (Horrendous home-office placement, particularly in a family with three loud, wise-cracking kids, but I digress.) I'd never before seen a dad who worked at home. None of the actual dads I knew, in real life, worked at home. They all drove away in the mornings to be middle-men, or lawyers or "sell components"  I can't claim that sifting through these memories of Jason Seaver as I walked through the woods birthed any great epiphanies or insights. It's just, some thirty-five years later, I'm a dad who works at home myself. And on days like this--a snow day, when my daughters are off from school, rambunctiously skipping back and forth from the neighbors, making snow angels and sledding, and I'm up in my office over the garage, yapping on the phone with book publicity people and typing (always typing)--I feel grateful to be a dad who works at home: grateful to be here, looking down on them from my peculiar perch, and taking a break to share hot cocoa, share the burden, share in the laughter and love. Rain or shine. All the time.  This week's walk is sponsored by Sean Sullivan, who thinks you'll like The Monolith, a short documentary by Rosie Walunas. You can see it here.

In this episode, we’re joined by Kelly Heekin and Ben Schmidt, the co-founders of premium hydration beverage brand Hoist, who discussed their strategy for mainstreaming a niche concept. Founded in 2009, Hoist was developed to be a more palatable version of Pedialyte, which in recent years has attracted a following among adults who use the products as rapid-hydration recovery drinks. Heekin and Schmidt said that while Hoist was ahead of its time, they were willing to be patient and wait for the market to catch up to the opportunity. “To be successful in this industry, you have to have the staying power and the ability to adapt,” Schmidt said. “It’s not going to be an overnight success, that’s for sure.” The co-founders explained how they incubated the brand for years in their backyard of Cincinnati, which allowed them to learn from mistakes before embarking on a national launch. That strategy is bearing fruit: Hoist is currently available in 10,000 retail locations across the U.S. As part of our interview, Heekin and Schmidt spoke about the genesis of Hoist and how they communicated their vision to stakeholders. They also explained why they haven’t taken any outside capital and how the brand has won placement and a loyal following at military retail stores. Show notes: 1:40: Martín, Maradona and Mad Tasty -- The hosts discussed a new documentary about legendary soccer player Diego Maradona, whether Mike’s blue sweater made him look more like Jason Seaver or Fred Rogers, and a canned negroni that everyone seemed to like. They also spoke about why some brands are using the word “hemp” in place of CBD, the rise of caffeinated sparkling waters, and how to meet everyone that you’d want to meet at BevNET Live.  15:55: Interview: Kelly Heekin and Ben Schmidt, Co-Founders, Hoist -- In an interview recorded at the 2019 National Association of Convenience Stores show, Heekin and Schmidt spoke with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif about how seeing Pedialyte consumed on NFL sidelines spurred the creation of Hoist, and the timing of the brand’s launch. They also discussed Hoist’s initial positioning as a hangover recovery drink and its eventual revamp and why most consumers don’t care about the science behind functionality. Later, they explained how they attracted two industry heavyweights to join their board, and how they built a strong presence at U.S. military bases. Brands in this episode: Tip Top Cocktails, Mad Tasty, Ugly Drinks, Sunshine Beverage Co., Hiball, Guru Energy, Hoist, Essentia, Pedialyte, Gatorade, Powerade, BodyArmor, Starbucks, Aquahydrate

Hey Seaver Fans, Angela Bowen here, the host of Show Me That Smile Again: A Growing Pains Podcast. For the month of September the character I choose to focus on is MAGGIE SEAVER. I picked S6E17: Eddie, We Hardly Knew Ye, which aired on January 30, 1991. In this episode Maggie's father makes a surprise visit to the Seaver household only to drop a major bomb on Maggie, with the news that he is dying. Guys and Gals, I'm not going to lie this is a sad, sad episode, and I do break down a couple times and talk about my dad's battle with cancer and his passing. If this is triggering in anyway feel free to skip it. This episode delivers an important message of how short our time on earth really is and the things we don't want to think about like losing our parents and everything that comes after. Also Joanna Kerns (Maggie Seaver) does an amazing job in this episode as it calls for her to really bring forth the emotion of losing a parent and she knocks it out of the park with her acting. Next month's chosen character for the month of October is going to be JASON SEAVER in S3E13: A Reason To Live, which aired on December 8, 1987. In this episode Jason Seaver feels dispirited and useless until he meets a sad, scruffy young girl who needs his help. Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Show Me That Smile Again: A Growing Pains Podcast. Here is the first official podcast episode. S1E1: The Pilot Airdate: September 24, 1985 In this episode the upwardly mobile, suburban Seaver family experiences some growing pains when Maggie Seaver returns to work as a newspaper reporter, Jason Seaver moves his psychiatric practice into the home, and 15-year-old son Mike asks for more freedom and gets it. I gave this episode a 2/5 Rating. I liked it, but it didn’t wow me. I'll be back in a couple weeks with S1E2: Springsteen, which aired on October 1, 1985. In this episode Mike is mercilessly teased by his friends after he and Jason attend a Bruce Springsteen concert and a TV interviewer captures Jason's overzealous show of affection for his son. Comedian and actor Alan Thicke joins the program to talk about his career and his work with the Alan Thicke Center for Juvenile Diabetes Research. Television audiences know Thicke best as psychiatrist and father Jason Seaver from ABC’s Growing Pains, now syndicated in over 65 countries. Last year’s Growing Pains: The Reunion was one of Disney’s highest-rated TV Movies. From 1980 to 1983, THE ALAN THICKE SHOW became (and remains) the biggest hit in the history of Canadian daytime television. The American late-night entry THICKE OF THE NIGHT followed. Alan is currently starring in CBC Television's monster comedy success J-POD. The Alan Thicke Centre for Juvenile Diabetes Research was established in 1989 at the Robarts Research Institute at the London Health Sciences Centre. The Centre was named for actor Alan Thicke because of his early connection to London while attending The University of Western Ontario, and his special interest in diabetes, as he had a son who developed diabetes as a child
