Portia May White was a operatic contralto, known for becoming the first Black Canadian concert singer to achieve international fame. Born in 1911, White's formative years were spent performing in her father's church choir in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She competed in local singing competitions as a teenager and later trained at the Halifax Conservatory of Music. One of her most popular recordings was of the African-American spiritual "Think of Me". She also had a hit with the song "4 & 20 Elders". In 1944, Portia White made her international debut auditioning for the Metropolitan Opera. White became the first Canadian to sing at New York's Town Hall performance space. The New York Times reported her singing was "remarkable." White later completed tours throughout Europe, the Caribbean, Central and South America. When vocal difficulties and cancer eventually contributed to her retirement in 1952, White settled in Toronto and trained other Canadian musicians such as Lorne Greene of Bonanza TV fame, and famous pop singer Robert Goulet. Portia White was interviewed by CBC Television in 1958. One of White's final major public appearances was a special command performance for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1964. Portia White occasionally performed on American radio during the medium's golden age. We found one appearance on the show New World A'Comin in 1945, celebrating the Allied Victory in Europe during World War Two, and it's meaning to African-Americans. More at KRobCollection.com

My guest on this episode is Terry Fallis. Terry's first novel, The Best Laid Plans, which began as a podcast and was initially self-published, won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour and was re-published by McClelland & Stewart in 2008. That book went on to win the 2011 edition of Canada Reads and was adapted as a CBC Television series and a stage musical. His next two novels, The High Road and Up and Down, were finalists for the Leacock Medal. And In 2015, he won the prize a second time, for his fourth book, No Relation. His other novels include Poles Apart, One Brother Shy, Albatross, and Operation Angus, and were all national bestsellers. Terry's most recent novel is A New Season, which was published by McClelland & Stewart in 2023. In its review of A New Season, The Winnipeg Free Press said, “It's about grief, friendship, family and, most of all, love, with humour taking a backseat for a change.” Terry and I talk about those early days of podcasting, about why, given all his success, he only recently retired from his day job to focus on writing full time, and about how readers and critics very often mistake comic novels for frivolous ones. Harry Forestell is a journalist with CBC Television. In 2013, he noticed a tremor in his right hand and was unsure what it was. It was later determined to be Parkinson's disease. He was referred to Dr. Tony Lang and the team at Toronto Western Hospital, a movement disorder clinic. They confirmed the diagnosis and began treatment. The symptoms of the disease began to worsen, and he was frustrated by the amount of focus and attention it took to walk normally. His doctor suggested deep brain stimulation (DBS) as a potential treatment option. He was hesitant at first, but as the symptoms worsened, he decided to explore the option further. He spent a weekend in November going through a series of tasks to see if he would be a good candidate for DBS. He was delighted to pass and was excited about the prospect of another treatment option. He spent a month in Toronto having the procedure done and was impressed by how quickly and with little fuss the surgery was completed. He was back at work and was able to return to his regular social life and work obligations. The impact of the DBS was immediate and very pleasing. His tremors and shakes abated, and he didn't have to experience dyskinesia anymore. He was able to return to work and even appear on camera, which was a huge bonus for him.The Krembil Brain Institute, part of University Health Network, in Toronto, is home to one of the world's largest and most comprehensive teams of physicians and scientists uniquely working hand-in-hand to prevent and confront problems of the brain and spine, such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, epilepsy, stroke, spinal cord injury, chronic pain, brain cancer or concussion, in their lifetime. In the earliest of days, throwing bones or stones, astrology, palmistry, the magic of numbers and in the 20th Century , Carl Jung defined us into archetypes which led to the corporate use of Myers-Briggs. The plethora of personality tests online, and the millions of followers of astrologers tell us that this curiosity isn't waning. Not even in this time of artificial intelligence. So why not give this audience the tools they hunger for, all in one place? The book, published by Llewellyn publishers is due out in April 2023 – called “Your Guide to Self Discovery – 20 Ways to Find the True You” contains reader interactive chapters from experts around the world on subjects such as numerology, past lives, karma, NLP, Animal Spirit Guides, hand reading, dreams, family constellations, face reading, Enneagrams and more. At the end of each chapter is a worksheet for the reader to fill out to get a more complete picture of themselves This book gives them a phenomenal tool to be the change and choose themselves -with a fuller more complete understanding of who and how th3ey are and what they have to offer the world.

If you've seen Son of a Critch on CBC Television, or Come from Away with the original Broadway cast, then you've enjoyed the work of Petrina Bromley. But those are just the latest and probably best-known roles she's had. Bromley has been making theatre and on-screen magic for many years. She's also had ties to Corner Brook, having worked with Grenfell Campus and Theatre Newfoundland Labrador. This week, she'll be back on the West Coast, with two shows at the Rotary Arts Centre.
As Britain and the Commonwealth prepare to bid farewell to Queen Elizabeth II, one Newfoundlander has some special memories of the sovereign. Dave Quinton hosted CBC Television's Land and Sea for many years, but back in 1960 he was a young man travelling with a buddy around Europe. Along the way, he spent some time as a gardener at Buckingham Palace. Later, Dave wrote about his experience in "The Grand Tour: My Months of Hitchhiking, Biking and Serving Her Royal Majesty." Quinton joined us to share his memories as a member of the Royal staff.

Thomas Elms stars in SkyMed, the action-packed CBC dramatic series about the up-and-coming pilots and nurses who work at an air ambulance service; the show premiered in July on CBC Television, CBC Gem, and Paramount Plus, and immediately got people buzzing on all the socials. Thomas is Captain Milosz Nowak, a calm, collected, and fiercely loyal pilot who broke with his immigrant parents to make his sky-high dreams come true. Thomas previously starred as Hamish Duke (the sardonic, cocktail-swilling werewolf and leader of the Knights of Saint Christopher) on The Order and recently wrapped a meaty role in The Boys in the Boat, an upcoming dramatic film directed by George Clooney about the legendary 1936 U.S. Olympics Rowing Team. In this fascinating conversation, Thomas reflects on his time as Hamish on The Order, what he learned working with George Clooney in The Boys in the Boat, Dennis Heaton's legendary brain, what it means to flex his “imagination muscle,” and the joys and challenges of portraying SkyMed's icy-cool Polish pilot. If you're of a certain vintage, like me, the name CBC Street Cents is sure to trigger memories from adolescence. The popular Canadian TV show, aimed at teenagers, originally aired on CBC Television between 1989 and 2006. Streets Cents is making a comeback, but this time, it's not on TV. This week, I sat down to chat with two of the lead content creators for the new Street Cents: Carley Thorne and Mercedes Gaztambide. Carley Thorne is a designer, and comedian. She has spent time at Toronto's Second City and toured North America performing sketch comedy. She translated her love of books into a successful YouTube channel with over 150K subscribers. Mercedes Gaztambide is a new graduate from Ryerson University with a degree in Journalism. Born and raised in Boston, her love of reading and writing started in Harvard University Libraries. Her goal is to find the truth in every story and prepare the next generation of critical thinkers. She knows what her credit score is and can help you find yours. I asked Carley and Mercedes about the upcoming Street Cents Reboot, and we talked about some of the key financial challenges facing young Canadians in 2022. This week on the Richard Crouse Podcast we meet Andrew Phung. You know him as the award-winning actor who played Kimchee in the CBC Television sitcom "Kim's Convenience," and have seen him in guest starring roles on shows like "The Beaverton" and "Wynonna Earp" but he's back with a new show, now playing on CBC. On "Run the Burbs," he plays Andrew Pham, a suburban stay-at-home dad of two children whose wife is an entrepreneur. Then, we spend some time with Kaya Usher. Her new album, "All This Is," was recorded with two of her children, fulfilling a dream that she and her husband, the late Tragically Hip singer Gord Downie, shared… to create music as a family. The result is an album of songs that represent not only an artistic awakening but personal healing.

This week on the Richard Crouse Show we'll meet the cast of a new CBC Television show called “Son of a Critch.” If you are a fan of the political commentary and social satire of “This Hour Has 22 Minutes,” you already know Mark Critch. Since 2003 he has starred on the political parody show. He's photo-bombed Justin Trudeau, offered Pamela Anderson a million dollars to stop acting, and poked fun at characters like Rex Murphy, Don Cherry and Donald Trump. His latest project is much more personal. A couple years ago Mark wrote a warm and funny look back at his formative years, growing up in St. John's, Newfoundland in the 80s called “Son of a Critch: A Childish Newfoundland Memoir”. That bestseller is now the basis of Son of a Critch, which airs on CBC television and CBC Gem on Tuesday nights. Later in the show we'll meet Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who plays the eleven year old Mark on the show, and we'll spend some time with the legendary actor Malcolm McDowell, the star of “A Clockwork Orange” and so many other films, and who plays Mark's grandfather. McDowell talks about his new found love of Newfoundland and offers advice to young actors.

This episode is the first in our two-part series on Canada's captivating history with psychedelics. Join us as we take a trip down memory lane... Did you know Canada was once the leading country in psychedelic research? Beginning in the late-1940s, Canada's first so-called socialist provincial government in Saskatchewan set out to improve the state of mental health care with research at the Weyburn Mental Hospital. Over the course of the 1950s, groundbreaking research with LSD and mescaline was conducted at Weyburn and LSD made its way to British Columbia which became home to the most prominent mental healthcare facility in the world during the 1960s. In this episode, we deliver a behind-the-scenes look at the introduction of LSD and peyote into Canada and the story behind the fascinating scientists and researchers that pioneered psychedelic research in the realm of psychiatry, while also advocating Indigenous Peoples and their cultural rights to peyote. This episode was produced and edited by Brendon Campbell. It was researched and written by Jaipreet Mattu, Sean Hallam, Rebecca Troock, Sidath Rankaduwa, Monica Lau, Ross Crockford, and Bob Sybydlo. Readings by Sean Hallam, Jaipreet Mattu, and Brendon Campbell. Original music and audio engineering by Andrew Illmann.
