It’s time to enter the Michael Jacobs Cinematic Universe (or the MJCU), when Ashley Johnson stops by the podcast! She may have crossed over with Cory and Shawn on a show called “Maybe This Time,” but you know her best as Chrissy Seaver from Growing Pains, when she was just 6 years old. And ever since then, she’s never stopped working. From Recess to The Last of Us, and now the co-founder of the revolutionary media company Critical Role has started her own nostalgic journey into podcasting. Who said too much TV isn't good for you? Hosts of the TV Doctor podcast are here to chat about why actually, TV can be the perfect prescription for your wellness. From community, to representation, to escapism, we dive into the many ways in which watching tv might just be what you need. In this episode, Dr. Cassandre Dunbar is joined by media experts Dr. Michele Foss and Ashley Johnson, the dynamic duo behind The TV Doc Podcast. Together, they unpack how television and media shape our sense of identity, belonging, and emotional wellness—especially for Black and mixed-race folks navigating representation and community in an often isolating world. In this episode, we discussed:How TV and media help shape self-perception and racial identityThe emotional and therapeutic impact of nostalgic showsFandom as a powerful form of community and connectionWhy representation on screen matters for our mental healthHow to raise media-savvy, critical-thinking kids in the YouTube ageWhether you're a lifelong Trekkie or someone who finds comfort in rewatching Living Single, this conversation will remind you of the deep impact media can have on our wellbeing.Guest Spotlight: Dr. Michele Foss is what happens when you combine a Professor of Rhetoric and Media in the Department of Communication Studies at Sacramento State University with an unapologetically nerdy pop culture fanatic. From the classes she teaches (ranging from Television Criticism to Media Aesthetics to Communication Theory to Methods of Fandom Studies) to the keynote addresses and invited lectures she delivers, Dr. Foss infuses heart, creativity, inclusivity, and fun into all she does. She uses her three fancy degrees and more than 25 years of boots-on-the-ground experience to make academic concepts accessible and "sticky" for her audiences. She also wears all the hats (creator, producer, editor, writer, and host) for her podcast, The TV Doctor, where she "prescribes" what you should be watching to heal your socio-cultural ailments. She's been recognized by her university for her excellence in teaching, community service, and scholarship/creative activity. The series is based on the first campaign of the Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role. It stars Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Matthew Mercer, Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham, reprising their roles from the campaign. The first season consists of twelve episodes, the first ten of which were funded via a Kickstarter campaign. In November 2019, ahead of the series premiere, it was renewed by Amazon for a second season which premiered on January 20, 2023. In October 2022, ahead of season two's premiere, Amazon renewed the series for a third season.[6][7] It is currently scheduled to premiere on October 3, 2024. The series received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences, with praise for its animation, voice acting, action sequences, story, writing, emotional weight, and faithfulness to the campaign. The series is set on Exandria,[8][9] a fictional world created by Matthew Mercer in 2012 for his personal Dungeons & Dragons campaign, which then launched as the actual play web series Critical Role in 2015.[9][10][11] Most of the story takes place on the continent of Tal'Dorei in locations such as the metropolis of Emon and the city-state of Whitestone.[8][9][12] The first two episodes of the series[13] depict "an all-new story about the seven-member Vox Machina team at D&D Level 7 on their first 'grown-up' mission, which occurs prior to Critical Role's first RPG show".[14] The series then adapts the Briarwood arc from the original web series,[9] "in which the Vox Machina crew avenge the murder of the rulers of the town of Whitestone and most of their offspring by the evil Lord and Lady Briarwood".[14] In the second season the series also adapts "other classic Vox Machina story arcs",[15] such as the Chroma Conclave arc.[16] Premise[edit]Setting[edit]Synopsis[edit]

Development of The Last of Us began in 2009, soon after the release of Naughty Dog's previous game, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. For the first time in the company's history, Naughty Dog split into two teams; while one team developed Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, the other half developed The Last of Us. The relationship between Joel and Ellie became the focus, with all other elements developed around it. Actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson portrayed Joel and Ellie, respectively, through voice and motion capture, and assisted creative director Neil Druckmann with the development of the characters and story. The original score was composed and performed by Gustavo Santaolalla.

When she was an international studies major living abroad, Ashley Johnson tells us she met a U.S. ambassador whose unvarnished career advice subsequently led her to divert her career path away from the diplomatic corps of the U.S. foreign service. Ashley reflects, "I thought I was going into the State Department." However, a weekend spent with Ambassador Roy Huffington, immersed in discussions about the pivotal role of a strong economy, sparked a profound realization. "You cannot be an effective leader if you don't understand how to make a strong economy," the ambassador and renowned Texas oilman emphasized, leaving Ashley determined to delve into the world of business and finance. More encouragement followed when a friend from a study group introduced her to the intricacies of Wall Street, igniting her fascination with financial statements. "Financial statements tell a really interesting story," she notes, "and if you know how to read them, you're going to understand something about that company that maybe other people won't." Johnson routinely draws our attention to lessons and moments of insight, such as when she illustrates for us the origins of her unwavering commitment to thorough analysis. During a pivotal investment decision, her scrutiny of financial assumptions saved her firm from a potential catastrophic loss. "Look for those assumptions, question them again and again," she advises, emphasizing the critical role of meticulous examination in financial decision-making.

When there are so many impactful use cases for satellite data, Ashley gives some insight into how Planet decides which ones to focus its resources on. We talk about the business impact as well. As CFO and president, Ashley tells her team that they have to “do well in order to do good,” emphasizing that Planet needs to be financially sound in order to have the greatest impact for good. This episode is sponsored by AvL Technologies, an industry leading manufacturer of multi-band and multi-orbit satellite communications ground terminals for military, government and commercial applications.

The show will premiere with two episodes on June 4. Though the trailer is a little more than a minute long, it doesn't show its hand too much other than to imply that someone - or something - is hunting and killing Jedi. Marvel Studios head of streaming, television, and animation, Brad Winderbaum, confirmed that the character of Richard Rider/Nova has a project in development. Winderbaum qualified the statement by saying that Marvel Studios is running more like a traditional tv studio and that things can change. Director Patty Jenkins revealed that she is back on board to helm the Rogue Squadron movie after making a new deal with Lucasfilm. Originally announced back in 2020, the project has shifted around due to changes with Jenkins, the potential of it being made into a television show, and more. Jenkins has long wanted to make what she calls a fighter pilot movie for Star Wars DC Studios is going all-in on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow writer Ana Nogueira who will also pen the live-action adaptation of Teen Titans. While the original Teen Titans were introduced in the 1960s in DC Comics, the characters have grown and expanded and found a popular audience with the animated show Teen Titans Go! on Cartoon Network. It and Annabelle writer Gary Dauberman wrote and directed the film, which has been in flux since the Warner Brothers and Discovery merger. Netflix anthology series Black Mirror will return in 2025 with six new episodes including a sequel to the sci-fi adventure episode, USS Callister. FX's The Bear has quietly been renewed for a fourth season, which will film back to back with the third season.
