Our Program Director in 1978 to 1980, Jeff Pollack, was at the helm of the WMMR for only a year and a half but brought WMMR back to #1 in the ratings and had so much to do with the revitalization of what we now call Putting Philly First. Jeff, who was just 26 at the time, would be the 3rd PD in 3 years and the station was struggling. When questioned about taking on that role at such a young age in the interview, his response was: "Hey man, it's not how long you play the guitar, it's how you play it." He got the job on the spot! He started with bringing back MMR mainstays including Joe Bonadonna and Michael Tearson, then he added more of the music to the playlist that we love still to this day. Pollack began the legendary block parties with a free concert on South Street, that we still talk about at the station. He tells us how the officials, rightfully so, denied the permit - but it was Philly in the late 70's, so they got one anyway and it was madness. One of our most famous pictures that still hangs in MMR's hallways is at that Southside Johnny show with thousands of fans in every corner of the picture including on roofs hanging out of windows and covering every inch of South Street. Jeff is now the Chairman/CEO of Pollack Music & Media Group, an international media music consultancy. It's a great trip down Philly memory lane, and you can find out more about him on https://www.pollackmedia.com/

In this episode, Wellington and Savon are joined by special guest Kevin Garcia, a good friend of the show, to discuss Dak Prescott's recent injury and him being out for multiple weeks because of it. Starring Tupac Shakur, Duane Martin, Marlon Wayans and Leon Robinson, they dive into how this film contained a memorable Tupac performance and also was not a typical sports movie but highlighted talent being corrupted by the street game. Finally, they discuss the quality level of basketball that was played, Birdie's menacing character and how the realism of this film; is what made it ahead of it's time and a more relatable 90's film.

Episode 69 In the spirit of #FlashbackFriday, we take it all the way back to March 1994* where we celebrate and pay tribute, to one of the more impactful movies in pop-black culture. Twenty five years ago, New Line Cinemas & director Jeff Pollack released Above The Rim, a movie about a New York City HS Basketball star and his relationship with two people: one is a drug dealer, and the other one is a former basketball star fighting his own personal demons. Both of these men impact his life at a critical period in his life on his pursuit of playing NCAA basketball. So today on The Ave Podcast, I invite Dennis Barham (Actor) & 1st time guest Peter-John Kerr (Director/Producer; Founder of Swooplay) as we have a conversation 25 years later about Above The Rim. We discuss the influence this movie had on basketball players from our generation, Tupac's impact and his untapped potential as an actor, question the existence of Tommy Shepherd, review the legendary soundtrack, and much more. * Technically, this movie debuted on March 23, 1994. However, the decision was made to air this podcast a week later so that it didn't get lost during the 1st weekend of March Madness. You're welcome basketball fans.... ** WARNING: This podcast contains explicit language. **
