Why are Black women still expected to carry everything without complaint? They keep telling Black women to be strong, to push through, to hold it all together. But what they never address is the damage that message leaves behind—mentally, physically, emotionally. The burnout, the silence, the pressure to succeed at the expense of our well-being. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right and still paying too high a price, you're not imagining it. You're navigating systems that were never designed with your safety in mind. In this special National Black Girl Month™ episode, you're invited into a powerful conversation with Dr. Vanessa Perry, global thought leader, psychologist, and CEO of The Perry Group. Alongside Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown, we explore what Superwoman Syndrome actually costs Black women—and how to stop carrying what was never ours to begin with. This episode answers the unspoken questions so many Black women ask themselves: Why do I feel like success is wearing me down? Is it possible to lead without losing myself? How do I reclaim peace when the world expects performance? Dr. Perry shares insights from over 25 years of research and executive advising in Fortune 500 companies, federal agencies, and high-level leadership spaces. Together, we discuss how to name the cycle, build supportive community, and create spaces—personally and professionally—where Black women no longer have to prove themselves to belong. This isn't just about workplace equity. It's about redefining what thriving looks like on our own terms. → Learn more and access your free toolkit at nationalblackgirlmonth.com → Join our virtual community: facebook.com/groups/nationalblackgirlmonth → Connect with Dr. Venessa Perry: https://www.linkedin.com/in/venessam/ → Connect with Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown: www.instagram.com/dr.rikesha → Connect with Felicia Ford: www.threads.net/@friendscallmefe Join Momentum Lab: https://lab.feliciafordandco.com About Dr. Venessa Perry: Dr. Venessa M. SEASON 11 FINALE!!!   We know how crucial this presidential election is. I mean in the last I would say 20 years, this may be ranked a little higher than 2008 election for Obama. We knew we wanted to see a Black President, even though Tupac said in 'Changes', we weren't ready. Having experienced, natural disasters, scandals, and reform, it's more than time for me to emphasize how crucial voting is. I am not saying just for this election, but county, distract, and state officials all play a role in how this election can go. We the people is our motto, but if the people to speak up and act up civilly, then how far back in time will our jurisdictions go? Tap in...let's get real!

One of the big questions about Vice-President Harris's candidacy is undoubtedly race. She would not be the first Black President. “I think that most times when people bring Kamala Harris and Barack Obama into the same conversation, they are kind of mistaken—it's just this kind of wish-casting,” Vinson Cunningham says. But “what they do have in common is a Black father who is not from America. And this brings all kinds of strange things into being . . . in creating a Black American identity.” Cunningham and fellow staff writer Doreen St. Félix discuss Harris's complicated identity as the child of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, and more.  (This segment is an excerpt from a longer conversation on The Political Scene.) Plus, the New Yorker sports correspondent Louisa Thomas talks with David Remnick about some of the unusual venues of the Paris Olympics—from the Place de la Concorde and the supposedly cleaned-up Seine to a small reef village in Tahiti.

It began with the nation's first Black President, but it would become much bigger. It would become a movement that captured every major institution in this country, including public schools, universities, corporations, and nearly all of culture. This could not last only two terms. No, this had to last forever. When Donald Trump won in 2016, the power concentrated in the Obama coalition refused to step aside. Trump was the problem. His supporters were the problem. They didn't like this new utopia that had become America and wanted change. But that change would never be allowed to take place. The coup began even before Trump took office. A group of powerful elites decided it was their choice who could and could not represent the people. If one of them offended the ruling oligarchy, he was seen as a “racist” and had to be stopped by any means necessary. They used every lever of power to stop him, to remove him, and to destroy him. They did this with the full cooperation of the nation's press corps. They did it in full view of the Security State. And they did it with the enthusiastic support of their voters.Get him. Destroy him. Remove him.I was one of them. I wrote endless pieces about why Hillary Clinton had to win because history had to be made. I spent years pushing woke ideology into the film industry. It made me feel important. I was part of a movement, something bigger than myself. I had the admiration of my friends and pats on the back by powerful people. Why would I ever give that up?I believed Donald Trump was a racist because the Democrats told me so. I believed he was a Russian spy because I watched Rachel Maddow. I believed he was a danger to our country because I read the New York Times, and I believed that the only thing that mattered in our lives was that those of us who were among the white majority did everything we could to elevate the oppressed minorities.I This is a public episode. 'WATCH: Biden Says He's 'Proud to be the First Black Woman to Serve With a Black President'

On the Fourth of July, President Joe Biden engaged in earnest dialogue with Andrea Lawful-Sanders, a WURD host based in Philadelphia. In the course of their conversation, it became apparent that the President, despite his milestone of sharing office with the nation's first black president and vice president, continues to struggle with articulating his message to the African-American community. A notable instance occurred when the President mistakenly claimed to be the first black female to serve with a black president. Such errors have been raising questions as conservative voices suggest these incidents are not isolated, but characteristic of his speech patterns. This error, like others before it, occurred amidst Democrats' call for the President to drop out of the presidential race, citing a similar performance during a recent debate in which he fumbled verbal communications. This perpetuates the narrative of concern over Biden's ability to effectively carry out his duties, given the demanding nature of the presidency, which leaves no room for communication errors. President Biden did, however, manage to recall one significant achievement. His appointment of Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first-ever black woman to sit on the Supreme Court bench. He expressed a deep sense of pride in the accomplishment, reinforcing his vision for an inclusive and representative America. The President continued, 'I feel a profound sense of pride in appointing the first black woman to the Supreme Court. We, as a nation, can accomplish much when we join forces.' The sentiment reveals Biden's unwavering belief in the potential of United States - his faith in the American dream of unity and limitless possibilities. However, his stumbling over words continues to serve as ammunition for his critics.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Many saw her tenure as a step forward for diversity in higher education, but today, her resignation speaks volumes about the challenges Black women face in academia. Gay faced fierce backlash this winter over the school's statements on the Israel-Hamas War. A politically-motivated grilling in Congress followed by an organized campaign to attack Gay's credibility and intellect, led to her resignation on January 2. What does this all mean for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in education? In this timely installment of “Meet the BIPOC Press,” our monthly collaboration with URL Media, a network of independent media owned and operated by people of color, Laura is joined by co-host Amir Khafagy, labor and immigration reporter for Documented, which is a member of the URL Media network. We unpack the crusade against Gay, DEI and the lack of support that students and faculty of color, and especially women of color, receive from their universities. In this thought-provoking episode, join us as we, two admittedly white midwesterners who were Pre-K at the time of the event, nevertheless take a look back at a significant event in American history – the 1965 Watts Uprising.  This leads us to think about how technology, particularly cell phones, and demographic change have significantly changed how police brutality is experienced and confronted.  And we talk about how white anger and "law and order" voting is echoed in the MAGA backlash against the first Black President.  More at proleftpod.com.Link for this episode:  CBS report on the Watts Riots, 1965https://youtu.be/Xg6HYwZ_ePQ?si=xlzvcaf5PnFtOox_Support the show:PayPal |  https://paypal.me/proleftpodcastPatreon | https://patreon.com/proleftpodOur YouTube Channel:  https://www.youtube.com/@ProfessionalLeft/videosOpening and Closing Music:Jumpin Boogie Woogie by Audionautix | http://audionautix.com/|Creative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY 3.0Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/jumpin-boogie-woogieMusic promoted by Audio Library | https://youtu.be/S2wYQlC0UswCreative Commons Music by Jason Shaw on Audionautix.comSupport the show

This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate  Thank you for your continued support!Dr. Claudine Gay, a widely esteemed scholar, made history as the first Black President of Harvard in the university's 387 years. Also joining us are Zaire Dinzey-Flores, Professor and Chair of Latino and Caribbean Studies at Rutgers University, and Jamiee Swift, the Founder and Executive Director of Black Women Radicals. Tune in to hear what the media got right — and wrong — about this story.“Academia is not an inclusive space. Academia is a hard place for many people, and we have to decide if we want institutions that are diverse and inclusive of multiple viewpoints . . . We belong and we contribute.” - Zaire Dinzey-Flores“There's a new age of McCarthyism taking place not only in academic spaces, but also media spaces. We're seeing reporters losing their jobs or being forced to resign if they have a pro-Palestinian stance. In academia, we're seeing regulations on campuses that say that you have to support Israel, almost like in the McCarthy era where you had to denounce communism in order to get a job.” - Amir Khafagy“If the university is supposed to be the marketplace of ideas, why are Black people and people of color's ideas, advocacy and activism always targeted, surveilled and pushed out?” - Jamiee SwiftGuests:•  Zaire Dinzey-Flores: Associate Professor & Chair of Latino and Caribbean Studies, Rutgers University•  Amir Khafagy (Co-host): Journalist, Report for America Member, Documented•  Jaimee Swift: Founder, Black Women Radicals; Professor of Black Politics Full Episode Notes are located HERE.  They include related episodes, articles, and more.Music In the Middle:  “Awakening” by Climbing PoeTree from their 2017 album INTRINSIC. Harvard's First Black President Resigns Amidst Controversy

Claudine Gay, Harvard University's first Black president, has tendered her resignation after just a few months in office. Gay took on the role in July, marking a historic moment for the prestigious institution. In her resignation letter to the Harvard community, Gay expressed her hope of how her tenure would be remembered. "When my brief presidency is remembered, I hope it will be seen as a moment of reawakening to the importance of striving to find our common humanity—and of not allowing rancor and vituperation to undermine the vital process of education," she wrote. However, Gay's tenure was marred by controversy, particularly surrounding her response to concerns about antisemitism on campus. During a recent hearing on Capitol Hill, where the House Committee on Education and the Workforce focused on antisemitism, accusations were levied against Gay for not adequately addressing the rising antisemitism among students and faculty. The hearing was prompted by the surge in antisemitic incidents at top universities following the October terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas. Critics pointed to what they deemed as President Gay's equivocation during the December 5 hearing. Congresswoman Virginia Foxx of North Carolina, the Committee chair, released a statement Tuesday in response to Gay's resignation, expressing her dismay for the former Harvard President's comments during the hearing. “What the world saw from President Gay on December 5 was repeated equivocation – and no one has forgotten it since. It is particularly appalling that on the day following the hearing, President Gay released a statement blaming members of the public for holding her to account – and rightfully calling out her evasiveness. Then there are allegations after allegations of plagiarism – this academically dishonest behavior is appalling. While President Gay's resignation is welcome news, the problems at Harvard are much larger than one leader and the Committee's oversight will continue,” Foxx said. President Gay also faced additional scrutiny over allegations of plagiarism, with The Harvard Crimson reporting corrections would be made to her 1997 Ph.D. dissertation. Parts of the dissertation were reportedly not properly cited. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Dr. Carol Swain was disappointed when she found out that her work had been stolen by Harvard President Claudine Gay and she was sure Gay would lose her job with so much evidence of plagiarism. But when Harvard announced they were keeping her as President and she would be allowed to make corrections, Swain was livid. Dr. Swain is not walking away from this controversy because she believes it has implications for all higher education if Harvard decides it can redefine plagiarism, that there are different levels of plagiarism that is acceptable for ethnic minorities. We all know if Claudine Gay were White, she would have been fired by now. The double standard harms everyone, not just Blacks who have worked hard to meet the standards. It harms all of American education which is already in decline. Swain says with Gay, Harvard is in a conundrum. They don't know how to dispose of their first Black President and she could be the poster child for DEI. Swain says Progressives don't care about standards, they care about looks. If you look at the Biden cabinet, they tout the most diverse cabinet in American history. We all know it's the most incompetent in American history. They don't care about qualifications. It's all about identity politics. Swain said once she studied Marxism, she understood how the Left put out their vision of reimagining America. They not only reimagined America, Swain says they've actually been able to implement it. They are Marxist. It is global. And they've infected every institution in America. They've upended America to the point it's unrecognizable. GUEST: DR. ASPS, recognized as the largest plastic surgery organization in the United States, has long been a leading authority in the field of plastic surgery. Dr. Williams, who hails from the San Francisco, California area, is the founder of Tri Valley Plastic Surgery. As a board-certified surgeon, he has established himself as an expert in both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, demonstrating his dedication to advancing the field. “For me personally, it's an achievement to be the first African American person to be president at ASPS. It's an incredible sense of honor, duty, and pride. I'm really standing on the shoulders of people who came before me,” he said in a statement. One of Williams' notable contributions is his advocacy for African American patients. He has consistently worked to provide a voice for the Black community in the realm of plastic surgery, aiming to ensure unique needs and concerns are heard and addressed. Dr. Williams has a distinguished educational background, having graduated from Yale University. In addition to his surgical expertise, he has also made a mark on the political stage by lobbying on Capitol Hill.
