Happy new year! FYI we had a few tech issues that meant some chunks of audio didn't record properly this week, so apologies for the chats that might stop or start suddenly, and also the wacky audio levels. Ghost in the machine!!This week, Kate and Brodie talk about doing karaoke, should we watch I'm Not There again?, last we saw each other Brodie was going to a hen's do and Kate went to a kick-on at a house owned by someone whose dog is Top Chef's instagram friend (sure!) and to a bar called Disco Pantera, Brodie got a DM NDA for a hot Melbourne cocktail, the dog who works at the Park Hyatt is retiring this month, does Melbourne need more breakfast spots (not cafes!).We watched a lot of stuff over the break! Kate watched The Lady Vanishes, Brodie's going to the movies again to see A Different Man and Lee, Brodie saw An Unmarried Woman and tries to do the Nosferatu voice (sorry), she's confused the Lighthouse and Swiss Army Man (and also confused that movie's farting corpse with one about a propellor penis WHOOPS sorry don't @ her). They both watched Heretic (Kate's nephew's introduction to Hugh Grant was the Oompa Loompa in Wonka), The Room Next Door, Anora, All We Imagine as Light and Better Man – shockingly we have very different responses to Monkey Robbie Williams. Kate also watched The Lost Daughter finally – the audio of that bit cut out SORRY!! Brodie saw Wicked for a third time (hehe) and Kate's been visiting Somebody Somewhere and loved Bad Sisters season 2 – BL less so. Send us a textCathy Terkanian is the subject of the new Netflix documentary “Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter.” When Cathy received word that the daughter she gave up for adoption many years ago had disappeared, Cathy embarked on an extraordinary and tenacious journey to find her, steered by the unbeatable bond of a mother and child to discover the truth. The horror of what happened to her daughter is unimaginable. In a recent post Cathy wrote on her daughter's photo, “My name is Alexis, my adopted name was Andrea Bowman. My adopted parents starved me, ignored me, belittled me, abused me, murdered me, chopped up my body and burned me with the garbage. My adoptive Mother divided my ashes. Never forget my name.” This story is hard to hear, it is hard to watch but it its important we look this issue straight in the eye. Adoption does have a dark side, not everyone has a voice or a mother who walks through the fire to find justice. There is no doubt there are many injustices that will never be revealed. Cathy like many biological mothers was coerced into relinquishing her child, and told her daughter would have a better life. The horror of what happened to Alexis proves that pure evil exists. Alexis reached out for help and no one listened. Cathy is making sure everyone is listening now.Justice for Aundria M Bowman facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/share/19ZDTKTHMK/?mibextid=LQQJ4dNow streaming on Netflix https://www.imdb.com/title/tt33163756/https://www.pulledbytheroot.com/
In 1974, Cathy Terkanian gave her 8 month old daughter up for adoption. She didn't want to, but her mother convinced her that the baby would go to a "great family" who could "give her everything." But Cathy would find out decades later that that her daughter had gone missing as a teen and had been gone for 21 years. And so begins Cathy's journey to finding out what happened to the baby she gave up in the hopes that she'd have a better life. Fam! Cathy Terkanian learned the daughter she gave up for adoption decades earlier vanished under mysterious circumstances while a teenager. When she dug deeper into Aundria Bowman's disappearance, she learned police never investigated her adoptive father, despite his history of violence. Convinced the Bowmans knew more than they were saying, Cathy began a crusade to force Aundria's adoptive parents to talk. Could a chance encounter between cold case detectives and evidence left 1,000 miles away be the break they've been waiting for? From the producers of the true crime classic “The Keepers” comes the two-part Netflix series “Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter.” It follows Cathy's journey to do right by the child she never knew and learn what happened to her. Her journey is filled with surprising twists and leaves the viewer to ponder how far is too far to seek justice for a daughter. Cathy Terkanian learned the daughter she gave up for adoption decades earlier vanished under mysterious circumstances while a teenager. When Cathy began her own investigation into the disappearance, she learned police dismissed the involvement of the violent predator living in the home Aundria Bowman grew up in. Her birth mother dedicated herself to getting Aundria's adoptive parents to reveal the truth about what happened. Then, after years of persistence, an unlikely discovery broke the case wide open. From the creative team behind The Keepers and Executive Producer Charlize Theron comes the Netflix documentary series Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter. It follows a decades-long quest for justice and the investigation into a man whose list of violent crimes remained largely unconnected. It also profiles Cathy's quest to do right by the daughter she never knew and bring her home. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, host Rebecca Lavoie interviews director Ryan White and producer Jessica Hargrave. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on. Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts.

Courtesy of Maggie, we are finally talking about a movie from this decade: Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut, THE LOST DAUGHTER (2021), which is also an adaptation of Elena Ferrante's novel. We marvel at Olivia Colman's face acting. We use the word “boundless” a lot. We remember the ways our girlhood-selves terrorized our mothers. We have a lot to say about mothering, art-making, and terrible men who are, nevertheless, alluring. Thankfully, this movie has a lot to say, too. Send us a Text Message. In part two of our Mother's Day Celebration, Nick & Bella discuss three more memorable mother characters. Claudine, starring the legendary Diahann Carroll, was a boundary-pushing film about a mother of six navigating the welfare system. The film also stars a sweaty, studly James Earl Jones. Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal knocked it out of the park with her directorial debut, The Lost Daughter. Join Bella as she explores the touchy but important themes in this Olivia Colman drama. Finally, another actress turned director: the great Penny Marshall's film Riding In Cars With Boys has a little bit of everything. Should have called this movie The Lost Plot, because we sure as hell couldn't find it. The movie shamelessly teased us with the promise of an exciting plot twist or a dangerous encounter only to give us...a worm. And an appreciation for our own mothers, who could never even come close to the insanely selfish matriarchs featured in The Lost Daughter. What a snoozefest. Have you ever wondered how the deepest sorrows can give birth to profound purpose? Today's guest, Bill Mitchell, exemplifies this transformation, sharing his heart-wrenching journey after the loss of his daughter, Kristen, to the scourge of domestic violence. Through raw and reflective conversation, we uncover the harrowing moments of Bill's story and the subsequent resolve he and his wife, Michelle, found to turn their anguish into advocacy, supporting those entangled in the perils of dating violence and raising awareness to prevent further tragedies.Navigating the often-missed signs of an abusive relationship forms the core of this powerful dialogue. As I recount a personal encounter with someone whose life was tragically cut short by domestic abuse, we dissect the subtle red flags, the overlooked manipulation tactics, and the escalating cycle of violence that characterize these toxic bonds. Bill's expertise shines as he walks us through a five-stage template of abuse, demonstrating the importance of both recognizing these signs and knowing when and how to seek help. His personal anecdotes serve as a solemn reminder of the stakes at play. The culmination of our exchange sees us celebrating the cathartic power of survivor stories, as Bill's podcast reaches a milestone of nearly one million downloads, each one a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. We highlight a chilling survivor account—a stark illustration of the imperative to heed warning signs and the significance of the tools and resources available. Bill extends an invitation to explore these tools further at whendatinghurts.com, where his book and podcast continue the mission. On this week's episode host Kelly-Anne Taylor is joined by Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley! From Broadchurch to The Crown to The Favourite, Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman has become a staple of British film and television. And Irish co-star Jessie Buckley boasts an impressive CV herself, starring across the big and small screen in projects like War & Peace, Chernobyl and Wild Rose. As a pair, Colman and Buckley previously worked together on Netflix movie The Lost Daughter – they played the same character at different ages and were both nominated for Oscars – and now share the screen again as warring neighbours in Wicked Little Letters, a comedy about a real-life poison pen scandal that shocked 1920s England. In this episode, we talk about sexism in the film industry, the importance of equal pay, the female-led films dominating the box-office and they share what they've learnt from their worst auditions. The one thing Valerie and Melanie agree on this week is that the execution of this film isn't as good as it could, or should, have been. They disagreed on just about everything else and they each have a strong case for why they've come to the conclusions they've come to. The main points of disagreement? The protagonist's object of desire (want) and whether the protagonist was empathetic or not. What do you think? Kimberly might not have loved Ferrante's My Beautiful Friend, but she's OBSESSED with The Lost Daughter. (Plus, the movie's great.) In part one, Kimberly will argue why you should read this creepy little gem, discuss names in the novel, and dive into the opening of the book.
In part two, Kimberly analyzes the uncanny, strange feel of the novel, and the important pattern of proliferation of mothers, daughters and dolls.
In part three, Kimberly digs into the depiction of maternity in the novel, and the close of the work.

The Great Wings - Dickon Hinchliffe - Original Soundtrack of THE LOST DAUGHTER(2021)结尾 Leaving - Jon Brion - Original Soundtrack of LADY BIRD(2017)提及书目/电影 影单安妮·埃尔诺&大卫·埃诺-布里奥《超8岁月》(Les années Super-8,2022)夏洛特·威尔斯《晒后假日》(Aftersun,2022)德格娜《告别》(2015)黄骥《笨鸟》(2017)黄梓《小伟》(2019)郑陆心源《错落斑驳的》(2022)米娅·汉森-洛夫《再见初恋》(2011)阿克塞尔·罗贝尔《少女索朗日》(2021)书单安妮·埃尔诺《一个女人的故事》《一个男人的位置》《一个女孩的记忆》(上海人民出版社)安妮·埃尔诺《悠悠岁月》(人民文学出版社)迪迪埃·埃里蓬《回归故里》(上海文化出版社)埃莱娜·费兰特《碎片》(99读书人 人民文学出版社)萨莉·鲁尼《美丽的世界,你在哪里》(群岛图书 上海译文出版社)杨本芬《秋园》(北京联合出版公司)彭剑斌《寂静连绵的山脉》(单读新书023 上海文艺出版社)胡安焉《我在北京送快递》(浦睿文化 湖南文艺出版社)蕾切尔·卡斯克《成为母亲 一名知识女性的自白》(世纪文景 上海人民出版社)延展阅读安妮·埃尔诺发表诺贝尔文学奖演说:写作,是为我的人民报仇www.thepaper.cn导演王兵:艺术本身只为个体经验而存在culture.ifeng.com被赶走前,她在红色电话亭住了一个月(作者:旁立)mp.weixin.qq.com关于填空题深焦DeepFocus专栏节目【当代生活-填空题】将把目光投向当代都市生活现场,对我们共同经历着的日常进行即时的反映与反思,通过评论、访谈、播客等等,展开一次次对于当代社会生活及文化现象的思辨。
I first met Olivia over food one night in the river Cafe, she was with Maggie Gyllenhaal, and they had just wrapped filming for their movie the Lost Daughter in Greece. It is not an exaggeration to say they pretty much ordered everything on the menu. We immediately got into talking about feeding our kids, cooking, and inflicted distance from family when working. This was a conversation that could have lasted for hours, but I had to go back to the kitchen and she needed to finish her lemon pasta before it cooled down. Today we are here in the River Café and she is the one cooking the lemon pasta - we are going to pick up where we left off a conversation with a woman, I admire respect and adore. Lucky me. Karlkin's investigation was driven by a single question: “If you knew then what you know now, would you have made a different choice?” Respectful, intimate imagery makes visible a continuum of ambivalence. In this conversation, Diana discusses, among other things:Ideology of motherhoodCollective imaginationMaternal reckoningMulticultural expectationsInnovating approaches to achieve neutralityVisually exploring vulnerabilityThe language of imagesDismantling narrativesReferenced in the episodeUnderbau [m]otherhoodSingapore International Photography Festival Marina Carpena Meyer Elinor Carucci — Mother (2013)Carmen Winant — My Birth (2018)Sheila Heti — Motherhood (2018)Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and Institution by Adrienne RichThe Lost Daughter film (2021) The Lost Daughter by Elena FerranteScreaming on the Inside by Jessica Grose“Regretful Mothers” by Anne Kingston, Maclean's“Women who wish they weren't mothers” by Diana Karklin, The Guardian 1854 Photography on Undo Motherhood, British Journal of PhotographyPublished by Schilt PublishingDiana's Instagram
This week the boys discuss M. Night Shyamalan's latest directorial feature, Knock at the Cabin (2023), which stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, and Rubert Grint. While Night had some source material to work with in Paul Tremblay's book "The Cabin at the End of the World", he changed the ending, so he was able to keep some surprise in how it's going to end. Not sure our co-host John liked that, he might have liked it more than his significant other, which is new for him. Jeff also made Dave edit some stuff out about the Chinese Spy Balloon because he ran his mouth about something he knew nothing about. However, since this movie has to do with the apocalypse, and we might have Russia and China both occupying land at the same time, maybe this movie will age well! This week the boys are joined by actress Tina Nikolova to drink some whiskey and beer and discuss Aftersun (2022), writer/director (and multiple-BAFTA nominee) Charlotte Wells' personal feature film starring Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal (Normal People, The Lost Daughter, Gladiator 2) and newcomer scene-stealer Frankie Corio. The film is very Scottish, and those UK-ers must really love their lottery because The National Lottery sponsored this. Apparently they sponsor a lot. The film is about a woman reflecting back on a vacation she took with her young father when she was young, reliving moments and flashes through home videos that capture more about her father than she was able to see as a child. Powerful stuff! Additional Cast/Crew: Celia Rowlson-Hall, Sally Messham, Spike Fearn, Harry Perdios, Ruby Thompson, Kayleigh Coleman, Barry Jenkins, Oliver Coates, Gregory Oke.
