Despite our best efforts, the World Cup is happening again, and it's happening here. Though we were able to put it off for 400+ episodes, it's finally time for us to do some winter holiday songs about the so-called beautiful game. Ian, in particular, has a lot of say. First up, we hear "Three Lions (It's Coming Home for Christmas)" by Baddiel, Skinner and the Lightning Seeds, a 2022 holiday version of their 1996 hit. Then it's "Star of Lisbon" by Celtic FC (I guess), a holiday song that is, in a rare event on our show, not really about the holidays and ALSO just barely a song. The ranking music in this episode is the theme to "Taskmaster" as performed by David Baddiel.

Daniel Jeremiah dropped real Detroit Lions intel on a two-hour NFL pre-combine conference call with roughly 150 media members. Three Lions-centric questions made the queue. The answers steered straight to offensive tackle and contingency planning. This Detroit Lions Podcast zeroes in on what matters for pick 17 and March. OT at 17: Monroe Freeling and Blake Miller Asked about offensive tackles at No. 17, Jeremiah immediately named Monroe Freeling of Georgia and Blake Miller of Clemson as fits he believes the Detroit Lions could consider. It is early in the process, and these are his opinions, but those were the first two prospects he tied to Detroit's draft slot. Both are squarely in the conversation before the NFL combine. Why Freeling resonates: learning curve and toughness Jeremiah outlined why Freeling stands out. Quick learner. Still improving. Limited experience but trending up. He added an off-field note with on-field value: Freeling's mother is a yoga instructor, which he views as a positive for injury prevention. He also relayed a durability moment. Freeling was expected to miss a game with a high ankle sprain. He said he felt healthy enough to go, entered on an emergency basis, then played the entire game and played well. That combination of growth, recovery habits, and resilience landed with the room. Free-agent tackle buzz and the contingency map Unprompted, Jeremiah said the Lions are sniffing around the free agent offensive tackle class. He did not elaborate. On the podcast, we walked through the practical outcomes of that note. It can be veteran insurance if a rookie tackle is the pick at 17. It can cover the possibility that Giovanni Manu is not ready to be the next man up. It can protect the depth spot that Dan Skipper filled. The class lacks sizzle, but there are playable options. Jermaine Illuminore has had decent starting stretches with the Lions and Raiders. He is not Taylor Decker, but he can start if needed. Braxton Jones is coming off a rough season. Jack Conklin brings a long injury history in Cleveland. Former Michigan State Spartan. Chicago area roots. Tough profile, but questions remain. Many in this market are primarily right tackles. This draft also gives Detroit room to stack swings. Beyond Freeling and Miller, there are many tackles in range throughout the weekend. Names mentioned as possibilities included Spencer Branch Manu, Caleb Holmes, Caleb Tiernan, and Dimitris Brown of Texas A and M as a Day 3 type the Lions could like. Doubling up is not out of the question if the board cooperates. For the Detroit Lions, the path at tackle runs through No. 17 and the veteran aisle. The next two weeks before the NFL combine will sharpen it. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #nfl #monroefreeling #blakemiller #freeagentoffensivetackles #taylordecker #giovannimanu #danieljeremiah #highanklesprain #jermaineilluminore #braxtonjones #jacksonconklin Learn more about your ad choices. I'm half-Welsh. My dad hails from cwmbran. And so presenting on Sky Sports News as Wales wound their way in magical fashion to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 is a treasured memory. A special summer - counterbalanced by the fact that I'm half-English and Wayne's Rooney's Three Lions were dumped out by Iceland in ignominious fashion. Ouch. That still hurts. But it was also a special time for the country Wales knocked out in the last-16 stage: Northern Ireland. It was their first and only, to date, time at The European Championship. Paul Gilmour was a firsthand bystander to the squad's exploits in qualifying and then in the tournament itself in France. He was the dedicated team reporter for Sky Sports News. It would have been a memorable assignment for any football person. But particularly poignant for Paul who hails from Northern Ireland. He wasn't born when his country qualified for the 1958 and 1982 World Cups. He was barely born when they made the World Cup in Mexico in 86. But in 2016 he was front and centre to cover a joyous time for his country. The team won only one of four games played in the tournament but made indelible memories, particularly the cacophonous singing of ‘Will Grigg is on fire!” Even though Grigg didn't get on the pitch during Euro 2016! It's a classic old school soccer story. But a very human one too. Season 19 Episode 25: Last week, we had Sonny Baker with us, casting an eye to the future of England fast bowling. Today, a player similarly highly-rated, Tawanda Muyeye. In Muyeye's case, having represented Zimbabwe at youth level, his family had to flee as a result of political persecution. A fresh start in England as an asylum seeker followed, which saw him score mountains of schoolboy runs before quickly ending up on Kent's books. Now 24, the stylish right-hander remains in the process of moving from refugee to citizen, but all things being equal, this time next year he should be eligible for England selection. Showing he has what it takes across formats, dreams of wearing the Three Lions burn brightly for this kind and articulate young man. And as you'll detect in this chat, he's someone who is firmly focused on living in the present rather than being trapped within his complex backstory. Australia brings memories that last a lifetime. In this episode, Jack, Matt, and Chippy dissect England's latest calamitous performance. Is it time for Bazball 2.0 or is this just another 'moral victory' for the Poms? The lads go deep on what it's really going to take for the Three Lions to recover some semblance of dignity, and perhaps even win a game of cricket abroad. It's a bumpy road ahead, and we're here for the ride. Then, we turn our attention to the hot mess that is the BCCI's red-ball setup. Coach Gautam Gambhir is facing a social media firing squad after recent Test losses, but are the calls to sack him justified? The team is in transition, the preparation is a shambles, and the pressure is mounting. We cut through the noise to figure out if it's Gambhir's tactics or a deeper structural failure that's the real issue. The latest guest in our ‘Bred a Blue' series has had quite an eventful football journey since making his one and only first team appearance for Everton. Chris Long netted a friendly goal against Paderborn as a teenager and played at Goodison in the Europa League before accepting that the level of competition for striking places was just too much...although in hindsight he wishes he'd signed the three-year deal that Roberto Martinez offered him. “I was fuming when we signed Samuel Eto'o,” he grins, looking back at his struggle to break through. “We had Jelavic, and Lukaku was on fire. Arouna Kone was there too, but I knew I was better than him!” Chris Long can also name Harry Kane and Eric Dier as teammates, and he admits that he never saw an England record breaker when he first partnered the current Three Lions captain in an international youth team. And he credits a current Everton Academy staff member with helping Dier become an international Premier League footballer. After leaving Everton, Long played for Sean Dyche, worked with David Weir, got knocked out on his debut for Motherwell and quickly learned that being a professional footballer isn't always the glamorous existence it seems. “Everyone thinks it's sunshine and rainbows but it's actually not. I've had more lows than highs and I wish I'd had more highs than lows but it's the best job in the world and I love it. I thought I'd be Everton's number nine for years and be the main man but football isn't like that. And life isn't like that. But at least I can tell my son I played for Everton.” Chris Long's career has been something of a rollercoaster but he's back enjoying his football and is looking forward to the start of a new season…on the other side of the world!
In 1885, H. Rider Haggard introduced Allan Quatermain, elephant hunter extraordinaire, in his best-selling African adventure novel 'King Solomon's Mines'. Haggard went on to publish twelve Quatermain novels and several novellas and short stories, including the four in this collection. 'Allan's Wife' explains how Quatermain became a hunter early in life and recounts the tragedy of his brief marriage to Stella, his childhood sweetheart. The three shorter tales are hunting yarns narrated by Quatermain as an old man. In 'Hunter Quatermain', Allan is faced with a raging wounded buffalo and in 'A Tale of Three Lions' and 'Long Odds', he takes on no less than seven lions. First published in 1889, this collection was re-published as the twenty-fourth volume of the celebrated Newcastle Forgotten Fantasy Library series in 1980.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Poul Anderson's 1961 novel Three Hearts and Three Lions is one of the cornerstone influences on Dungeons and Dragons: a medieval-inflected romp through creature encounters and chivalric romance, featuring the world's most terrifying version of troll. Jack and Kate, our paladins of pulp, armor up and prepare to do battle with a veritable monster manual of menace in this month's book. What makes old D&D art so damn compelling? How does Nazi-punching figure into this fantasy adventure? Why is this sword named after the virtual assistant inside my Microsoft device? All these questions–plus a lengthy digression on enormous tomes–and more will be explored on this episode of Bad Books for Bad People.
