William Gadsby was much more than a preacher to his Manchester congregation. He also wrote for them, which is surprising, given his poor education. He produced hymns for their worship, tracts for the controversies of the day, a magazine to edify them during the month, a catechism for their children, and sermons to read. Gadsby's errors in teaching are not unimportant, but they do remind us that the sovereign God is not bound to only work salvation through men with perfect doctrine. "Just over a year after John Gill's death, another man was born who called himself a Strict and Particular Baptist. He stood in the line of those often called hyper-Calvinists. His name was William Gadsby and while he shared the strong Calvinism of Gill, his life circumstances and ministry were considerably different in some ways. If you have heard his name before, it is probably in relation to his well-known hymnal, usually referred to simply as “Gadsby's Hymns”. In today's episode of The Halloween Podcast, host Lyle Perez takes us through the haunted corners of Virginia, a state rich in American history and ghostly legends. From the infamous battlefields of the Civil War to eerie mansions and mysterious bridges, Virginia's haunted sites reveal stories of lingering spirits and tragic pasts. Join us as we uncover 10 of the most haunted locations in the Old Dominion, where Confederate soldiers, ghostly nurses, and lost lovers are said to roam. Featured Locations: St. Albans Sanatorium 6248 University Park Dr, Radford, VA 24141 Originally an all-boys' school before its conversion to a mental hospital in the early 20th century, St. Albans has become one of Virginia's most infamous paranormal sites. Known for harsh experimental treatments, the sanatorium is said to be haunted by the spirits of former patients. The basement is particularly eerie, where visitors report hearing disembodied whispers, feeling phantom touches, and seeing shadowy figures. Paranormal investigators frequently capture EVP recordings, especially near the old hydrotherapy room, where many experienced immense suffering. Hollywood Cemetery 412 S Cherry St, Richmond, VA 23220 Established in 1847, Hollywood Cemetery is the eternal resting place of Confederate soldiers, U.S. presidents, and the infamous “Richmond Vampire.” The legend of the vampire centers on the tomb of W.W. Poole, from which strange noises are said to emanate at night. Visitors have reported seeing ghostly soldiers, feeling chills near the Confederate burial grounds, and even catching glimpses of General Robert E. Lee, his figure silently wandering the cemetery grounds as if reliving his past. The Exchange Hotel 400 S Main St, Gordonsville, VA 22942 The Exchange Hotel became a Civil War hospital, treating thousands of soldiers. With its storied past, it's no surprise that ghostly nurses are reportedly seen tending to invisible patients. In the basement, which once served as a morgue, visitors have heard eerie moaning and footsteps echoing through the otherwise empty halls. The ghost of a Confederate soldier is a frequent sight, believed to be lingering, perhaps waiting to be reunited with lost comrades. Bacon's Castle 465 Bacon's Castle Trail, Surry, VA 23883 Constructed in 1665, Bacon's Castle has borne witness to rebellions, family feuds, and ghostly occurrences. Visitors report encounters with a woman in colonial clothing, believed to be Arthur Allen's wife. Paranormal investigators have witnessed furniture moving on its own and heard laughter in empty rooms. The house is a frequent site for ghost tours, with guides sharing tales of sudden chills, strange lights, and objects shifting mysteriously. The Martha Washington Inn & Spa 150 W Main St, Abingdon, VA 24210 Once a Civil War hospital, the Martha Washington Inn has its share of restless spirits. A particularly famous legend involves the spirit of a young nurse, known as the “Yankee Sweetheart,” who fell in love with a Union soldier. Guests report hearing her soft footsteps in the halls and glimpsing her shadow near the spot where her beloved died. Other ghostly sightings include Confederate soldiers and eerie bloodstains that appear on the floors before mysteriously vanishing. Gadsby's Tavern Museum 138 N Royal St, Alexandria, VA 22314 Dating back to the 18th century, Gadsby's Tavern is haunted by the mysterious “Female Stranger,” who arrived gravely ill and, upon her death, requested her identity remain secret. Seen frequently in Room 8, her ghostly figure leaves cold spots and an eerie sensation for those who venture close. Visitors and staff alike have also reported phantom footsteps echoing through the tavern's historic rooms. Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historic State Park 6541 Saylers Creek Rd, Rice, VA 23966 The bloody Battle of Sailor's Creek saw nearly 25% of General Robert E. Lee's army fall. Visitors report ghostly figures wandering the battlefield at dusk, and cold spots are often felt around the Overton-Hillsman Farmhouse, which served as a makeshift hospital. The battlefield is known for mysterious cries and the faint sound of cannon fire, as if the battle is replaying for eternity. The Public Hospital 325 W Francis St, Williamsburg, VA 23185 Established in 1773, the Public Hospital for Persons of Insane and Disordered Minds is the oldest psychiatric hospital in the U.S. Shadows, sudden cold chills, and unsettling whispers haunt the halls. Visitors report feeling phantom touches and hearing footsteps in rooms long since abandoned, with occasional sightings of patients in old-fashioned hospital gowns. Swannanoa Palace 497 Swannanoa Ln, Afton, VA 22920 This grand estate, built as a testament to love, is haunted by the ghost of Sallie Dooley, who is often seen near her stained-glass portrait. Visitors feel sudden chills and see objects move on their own, especially around Sallie's favorite rooms. Paranormal investigators have captured EVPs and other strange occurrences, making Swannanoa a popular stop for thrill-seekers. Bunny Man Bridge Colchester Overpass, Clifton, VA 20124 The tale of Bunny Man Bridge is one of Virginia's most chilling urban legends. Locals report seeing a man dressed in a bunny suit wielding an axe near the bridge, especially on Halloween. Some say he's the spirit of an escaped convict who haunts the bridge, while others claim the presence is something darker. Witnesses often hear unsettling noises like screams and whispers, making Bunny Man Bridge a must-visit for those seeking a real scare. Florian Gadsby is a bit of a phenomenon. The ceramicist currently has a new show at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and has also published a memoir, By My Hands, that charts his formative years with clay, including apprenticeships in the UK and, most intriguingly, Japan. Essentially, it unpicks his route to becoming a fully, fledged professional potter, while at the same time, providing tips about his thinking and process. Since he started on Instagram a decade ago, Florian has built up a social media following that can only be described as formidable. He's part of a generation that has changed the way pots, in particular, but craft, in general, can be communicated, using Instagram and YouTube as educational tools but also as a hugely effective channels for selling work. In this episode we talk about: what his studio says about him; his YSP show; selling ‘merch'; being young to publish a memoir; comparing writing to pottery; his fascination with the colour green; going to a Steiner school; deciding against university; his love of mugs and the joy of repetition; his apprenticeship in Japan; resisting the tag of the ‘Instagram potter'; the pressure of social media; and wanting his own apprentice (eventually). Our friend Wanda Sykes returned to The Late Show last summer to chat with Stephen about her Netflix show, “The Upshaws,” and her honest reaction to the Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso. To mark the occasion, an international event called Picasso Celebration has been organized, with 50 museums throughout the world running 50 different shows looking at the legacy of Picasso, among the most well-known artists of the 20th century. Certainly the most unusual and most talked about of these is not a “celebration” of Picasso at all. The Brooklyn Museum is hosting “It's Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby.” Brooklyn Museum curators Catherine Morris and Lisa Small have worked with the famous Australian stand-up comedian Hannah Gadsby to create an art show that takes its cues from Gadsby's 2018 blockbuster Netflix comedy special Nanette. That show was, among other things, a blistering argument about the sexism of art history, the art industry, and, specifically, of Picasso.“It's Pablo-matic” has itself been at the center of a wave of criticism in recent weeks. Rachel Corbett, Artnet's deputy editor, speaks to Ben Davis, Artnet's national art critic, who wrote a long essay about the show, the reaction to the show, and what both mean for the site.
In this episode, Jerry & Matt discuss Henry Gunderson's solo presentation at Perrotin Gallery, the Lisa Schiff affair has a juicy update, and finally the Brooklyn Art Museum's summer blockbuster “Pablo-matic” by Hannah Gadsby and the latest discourse around feminist cringe culture. On this ID the Future, mathematician William Dembski and host Eric Anderson explore whether design detection tools shed any light on the recent chess scandal involving world chess champion Magnus Carlsen and American grandmaster Hans Moke Niemann. Did Niemann cheat in a match where he beat Carlson, as some have claimed? There is no smoking gun in the case, so how might one determine if cheating occurred? At first glance the problem might seem far removed from the design detecting rules and tools Dembski laid out in his Cambridge University Press monograph The Design Inference. But actually there is some intriguing overlap. Is there a way to dig into the chess data and determine whether Niemann secretly used a computer chess engine to Read More › Source

On this episode of Build Better Brands, Danielle Clarke is joined by Paul David Perry and William Gadsby Peet, founders of Literal Humans, who have a focus on creating not just resilient brands but brands that are mission-driven and have real values.KEY TAKEAWAYSWe gambled a little, but were thankfully proven right on, as there probably wasn't a better time to start than in the middle of a pandemic. Obviously the first six months were pretty rough, everyone battened down the hatches and no one had any budget. But then everyone realised that the only way we can make money is online and it was a good time to run a content and digital marketing agency because to sell stuff online you need content and digital marketing, so it proved to be a bit of a lucky/strategic masterstroke. The name gets us a lot of mileage, I think it sticks in people's heads and maybe they laugh about it initially, but they ask about it. To be fair, your first job as a marketer when you're starting an agency is to build something memorable, build a memorable brand for yourself that will be sticky in people's minds and thankfully we've accomplished that, I think.SaaS is Software as a Service – Dropbox is SaaS, technically Netflix is SaaS – it's anything you pay a recurring retainer for and in return you get software as a tool, like Adobe, Figma or Canva. With the world we live in today those are the ones that tend to be unicorns. The reason we focus on startups in the SaaS space is they tend to grow very quickly and very interestingly. With regards to mission-driven, we work with people we think are making the world a better place in some regards. We don't work with anyone we think is doing something actively bad and we don't work with anyone we think is not going to be into our style and our marketing, anyone who's going to be too by the numbers, boring, uninterested in what we do. One of the most common things that annoy us about brands is 1) that they've drunk their own Kool-Aid and they think that they've created a revolutionary product, then you use the product and you're like: “Mate, this is just a rip off of something else with slightly different branding and one USP.” Be eyes wide open about what you're selling. 2) No one has any fucking creativity or interest in being risky any more. In the 90s brands' logos and work marks were made, now every single brand copies Apple's; a straight monochrome word mark because everyone would rather be non-offensive than actually inspiring. One of the things we love about our agency and the people we get to work with is they're up for taking risks. They'd rather delight 70% of their market and piss off 30% of it than be a bowl of oatmeal to all 100%. That's one of the biggest things branding is missing at the moment: Risk takers.BEST MOMENTS‘Most marketing is shit. The reason that it's bad is it just talks at people rather than to them. All the best marketing tells a story, treats people like humans and tells a human narrative.'‘Everything we do is for humans by humans.'‘Bad branding is bad branding, I don't think by doing a bad job you should be crucified online. But, you kinda should do it.'‘A principle we laid down early on, and we've seen the data and we just know intrinsically and morally, frankly, that diverse teams perform better. It's not even just about performance, it's the ethical right thing to do in 2020 in one of the most diverse cities in the world.'ABOUT THE GUESTPrior to launching Literal Humans, Paul David Perry worked as a freelance writer and content strategist for a number of different tech brands, including Contentstack, Submittable, TransferWise, and Toptal. He also helped build a previous agency from $500K ARR to $1.5MM ARR in under two years by providing high-quality content strategy + execution across a range of clients and building internal agency systems. Before his career in content marketing, he worked in education and nonprofit management in the US.William Gadsby Peet is a former journalist turned digital marketer that specialises in content and digital marketing strategy. He's made thousands of exquisite cups, mugs, bowls, vases, jars and more which he sells on his website at floriangadsby.com. About 5 or 6 years ago he began diligently posting his work daily on instagram and hasn't missed a day since. Three years ago Florian began making and posting videos on YouTube allowing him to dive deeper into the process of making pottery and discuss his philosophy of making. His work is characterized by simple forms and straight shapes, but with an incredible attention to detail. There's something timeless and universally beautiful about all of his pieces. His videos take us inside a prolific profesional studio, showing viewers how clay is thrown on a wheel, shaped, trimmed, glazed and fired. He even gives us insight into how he manages to package and ship so many orders. If you're an artist or craftsperson, you will find Florian's videos to be inspiring. And if you aren't a maker, you will enjoy the calming pace of these videos and marvel at how finely crafted art is created by someone at the top of their field. His pieces are truly stunning and it's so satisfying to watch a blob of clay come to life on a wheel in his hands. The comedian Hannah Gadsby has been touring this summer with a show called “Body of Work.” She came to wide attention in 2018, with the Netflix special “Nanette.” It was a full-length comedy show, and, at the same time, a carefully structured critique of standup comedy which argued that comedians have to distort personal experience for the sake of a joke, inflicting a kind of violence on themselves and their audiences. Gadsby recently published a memoir about her breakout moment called “Ten Steps to Nanette.” The New Yorker's Emily Nussbaum talked with Gadsby back in 2018, when “Nanette” had just been released. Plus, Patricia Marx tries the trendy relaxation technique called flotation therapy—formerly known as a sensory deprivation tank. But relaxing, Marx found, is just too stressful, and her microphone was the only thing that found peace.

A long line of our nation's first President's all tipped a drink, gobbled up some food and danced the night away at the very historic Gadsby's Tavern in Old Town Alexandria Virginia. And while having a good time was important, it was also the place where some of our early nation's most famous founding fathers got down to business. They met to hear the latest news of the day, and they schemed to make news of their own, coming up with the ideas for a new nation, that we still enjoy today! The place to see and be seen!
