In this episode of the Active Life Podcast, Larry Gaier tells his story, a personal trainer who grew his career from humble beginnings to earning $10,000 a month while selectively working with clients he loves. Larry's journey started at a commercial gym, New York Sports Club, where he worked as a swim instructor after asking for a job to afford a gym membership. He transitioned to personal training after demonstrating his passion for fitness and helping gym-goers.Larry shares how he built his clientele, focusing on meaningful conversations rather than just fitness routines. Over time, his dedication paid off, and he was able to establish himself as a sought-after trainer, even though the gym's corporate environment limited his ability to grow further. Seeking autonomy, Larry left the gym to start his own training business at a smaller rec center, where he doubled his income while working fewer hours. Throughout the conversation, Larry emphasizes the importance of personal growth, education, and providing value to clients. He discusses his decision to transition from direct personal training to mentoring other trainers, helping them build their businesses, and scaling his impact through Active Life. Larry now continues to train a select few clients while focusing on mentoring others, ensuring that his work remains inspiring and fulfilling. Key takeaways: Larry's shift from employee to business owner mentality helped him break through income ceilings. Providing a unique, personalized approach to training led to client loyalty and increased demand. Scaling impact by teaching others is a natural progression for those excelling in their fields. This episode is a motivating listen for fitness professionals who want to build a sustainable, impactful career.

Kari Saitowitz is a baseball fanatic, the founder of Fhitting Room, and currently serves as the Chief Marketing and Creative Officer for the New York Sports Club. She graduated from the Wharton School with a strategic management and marketing focus and got her first job at American Express. From there, she leaned into her passion for marketing and decided to pursue her MBA. After graduating from Harvard Business School, Kari worked at Pepsi until she had her son. After his birth, she started meeting with a personal trainer who also happened to be in business school, and their conversations led her to become an “accidental entrepreneur” as she launched Fhitting Room in 2012. Business was booming until COVID changed everything. In 2022, NYSC acquired Fhitting Room and brought Kari on as their Chief Marketing and Creative Officer. In this episode, Alan and Kari discuss her path to creating Fhitting Room, how she ended up at NYSC, the complexity of their organizational overhaul and rebrand, and all the twists and turns that have happened along the way. NYSC is a long-standing brand, having recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. At the peak, there were over 200 clubs, but after closing many during the pandemic, there are now just under 50. Over the past few years, the NYSC has suffered from growing pains as it rebounded from the pandemic, shifted from a public to a private company, and brought in a new CEO. Now, in the rebuild phase, the focus is on repairing their damaged reputation and renewing trust.Kari is currently leading NYSC in a brand comeback by bringing all NYSC brands together under one roof in both name and operation. To execute the rebrand, Kari's main infrastructure goals have been consolidating the backend tech, implementing automation, and bolstering the NYSC brand. These efforts have unified their brand identity, increased efficiency and productivity, and improved the member experience. Now their biggest marketing objectives are increasing brand awareness, showing they are open and investing, growing membership, and deepening relationships to improve retention. They are also developing partnerships and creating activations with Garmin, Under Armor, and Hyperice to enhance the member experience, community unification, overall wellness, and build upon the NYSC mission of changing lives through fitness. In this episode, you'll learn:The founding of Fhitting Room and Kari's path to NYSCHow Kari and her team are repairing reputational damage after a huge transitionPractical aspects of a complete brand overhaulKey Highlights:[02:00] 7 MLB events in 7 days across 5 cities[04:35] From “accidental entrepreneur” to CMO[11:30] Pivoting the Fhitting Room through COVID[14:00] Where is NYSC today, and how does Fhitting Room fit in?[16:30] Rebuilding the value proposition[18:55] Consolidating complexity[25:40] Meeting people where they are[28:45] Garmin, Under Armor, and Hyperice, oh my![31:15] Celebrating 50 years of NYSC[33:35] Learning to believe in herself and her abilities[36:55] Enjoy the journey and take more risks.[38:55] The AI portion of the show[39:40] The power of individual creators and influencers[42:00] The complexity and fragmentation of media Looking for more?Visit our website for the full show notes, links to resources mentioned in this episode, and ways to connect with the guest! Dancer, Dreamer and a Wanderer: Jannelle Cortes Founder of GrooveTrips and GrooveFit I can barely sit still as I listen to this episode! BEYOND excited to share someone that I personally know and love very much!  Please welcome, a multi-passionate, multi-talented entrepreneur, dancer, creative and leader, Jannelle Cortes. I've known this creative powerhouse since 2005, have studied various styles of dance with her and have traveled with her to Egypt and the Dominican Republic! We met in 2005, when I was manifesting the best belly dance teacher at New York Sports Club in NYC and we (all the shimmy sisters) followed her everywhere, borough to borough just to dance with her! We've traveled from borough to borough and country to country as she expanded GrooveFit to GrooveTrips guiding people to trips such as Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Egypt and more! Many of us, including yours truly, were in her Middle Eastern cardio dance workout video, “ The Belly Dance Workout for Every Body!” She's a passionate, generous and beautiful being whose soul has guided to so many spaces, places and countries to support community, create community and share the magic of dance, culture and connection.    Early beginnings, from Baile del Perrito to Ballet, she shares “Ballet was my Yoga.”   Dance was not something anyone thought she would pursue full-time and she entered her Fordham University Masters program.   Grad school/Corporate World to Full-time dancer and teacher: The moment she realized that The Universe was opening a door to living a life with more passion.   Her first belly dance class with Amira Mor filled her with joy and admiration, “I don't know that I have ever felt that kind of exuberance and joy.”   The term, “crazy belly dancer” and what it means- I went through that as a student!   How Jannelle began taking belly dance students to Turkey, Egypt and Morocco so her students could learn from the land and the people where the music and dance was born.   Jannelle shares how creating space for folks to express themselves makes her joyful because she recognizes it may be the only place where we can be other aspects of ourselves.   “It provided all types of women, all ages, all bodies to come into class and be celebrated, Jannelle on her dance class teaching.   Teaching dance class for Eddie Palmieri at the Savannah Hotel   “When you're born with something, you have to feed it. It's you, this is a part of you,” Jannelle Cortes   Supporting local artists and small businesses when she travels and why it's important.   How Cuba gave her the opportunity to meet organizations and people and feel called to give back through each trip.    Exploring her identity as a Dominican woman who comes from an island that has been impacted by colonization, oppression and colorism. How do I heal myself and help others heal? How have my people come about?    Her experience of coming home to Ghana and a sense of completion.   Ancestral patterns and ancestral gifts that Jannelle has tapped into.   Shout out to Ivonne Velasquez and to my Mom and Johanna Olivas and Vanessa Villaverde- same message, “ It is our responsibility to seek happiness for ourselves.”   Jannelle closes with some advice for creative entrepreneurs: There is no blueprint for entrepreneurship, most Latinx didn't grow up talking about money so much of the business acumen we have, we've had to earn and learn. You're allowed to recreate yourself, over and over and over again.” BIO:   Jannelle Cortes is a choreographer, travel professional, and entrepreneur that grew up in the Maryland area and now resides in New York City and Havana, Cuba. She is the Founder of  the Groovefit Dance Company and Groove Trips LLC, both intergenerational companies that  promote community, accessibility, and sustainability.   Find Jannelle Cortes for updated info on her upcoming trips and masterminds: https://groove-trips.com/ Follow on IG: GROOVETRIPS

At just under an hour, the 1934 murder mystery The Crime of Helen Stanley hardly overstays it's welcome.  It was the fourth film in the Inspector Steve Trent series with Ralph Bellamy playing the always able and ready gumshoe. This time he's investigating the murder of a famous, and infamous, movie actress who leaves a trail of suspects in her wake. Fitting that the shortest movie they've every discussed yields Hot Date's shortest podcast.  But it's still jam packed with lots of recently seen including 1969's Sweet Charity, giallo The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, and recent horror films 1BR and They Should Have Left.  Dan also sounds off on the New York Sports Club's customer service and Vicky tells us about her jaunt through Central Park and a very pampered kitty. During this episode of Vital Metabolic Podcast, hosts James Wheeler and John Parker speak with Kelly Manzone, who is an expert on training with kettlebells and clubs. Kelly talks about how she incorporates movement into her training, the importance of creativity, and how to get started with circular training.   Episode Highlights:  What inspired you to add kettlebells into your training? Kelly was the first to bring kettlebells into the New York Sports Club she was working at. Kelly battled infectious colitis for 3 years after a severe bout of food poisoning. Kelly sees kettlebells as a way to fill in the missing gaps. Accessory training doesn’t mean you have to lose your background, whatever that may be. How do you utilize these tools with your clients? Kelly uses different tools with different clients on a case-by-case basis. John mentions that training is not just about traditional approaches, there is an art behind it. How does working on stability vs mobility look in your training? Kelly is hypermobile, so she does feel like she works more on stability. When you are training with kettlebells, what are you thinking about? When Kelly is training for herself, she does it more intuitively, but she does have days where it is really structured. Kelly also talks about how she uses kettlebells with her clients and ways to be creative. Kelly likes to work on skill-based modalities with her clients. Kelly mentions that, with skill-based modalities, clients have to be trusted to practice on their own. They can’t only practice once or twice a week.  How do people get started with circular training? Remember that your body is a moving unit. People have always been moving, pulling, pressing, etc. long before it was formatted by an industry. Kelly is more active on her Instagram. Kelly feels that there is too much comparison within the industry, and that it’s completely fine for people to have different training styles. It’s important for trainers to understand their strengths/weaknesses and areas of expertise, and know when to refer to someone else. Do you have anything else to share?  Where can people find you?   3 Key Points: Kelly believes that creativity is a very important part of the training process. With skill-based modalities, you have to be willing to keep working on them at home. There does not need to be so much competition in the fitness industry.   Tweetable Quotes:  “Movement is its own language.” -Kelly Manzone “I’ve never been able to put myself in a box and describe exactly what I am. It’s because I’m constantly curious about what’s on the other side.” -Kelly Manzone “I train a lot of type-A personalities, and I want them to tap into feeling.” -Kelly Manzone   Resources Mentioned:  James’ Facebook Instagram Twitter John’s Facebook Instagram Twitter Kettlebell Gains Apparel code vital20 Kelly’s Facebook Instagram Website kelly@kmmoves.com https://www.indianclubsacademy.com/
