gm,This podcast might as well be titled "Life Alpha" because Joe and I riff on many fantastic topics that have helped us grow as humans and creatives.Joe is a photographer and actor with a wide variety of styles, everything from powerplants to clowns, monuments, and so much more.We start our chat by going through the subtle art of not giving a fuck, and the importance of having personal anchor points in our lives. Something that really stuck out to me was Joe's advice on how to ask our brain better questions; it really got me thinking about what and how I ask myself questions moving forward. We spent the rest of the time talking about two important topics: painful art vs. joyful art, and the second piece we dived deep into was his Foundation genesis piece, "ADHD and Me."We wrap up this epic conversation where we started, with anchor points.Enjoy

Carre' Callaway-aka Queen Kwong- is a musician, song-writer and podcaster. Like most musicians in the last couple years, Carre' has had a challenging time maneuvering the sudden change in her vocation, but her situation is different. On top of the touring limitations, Carre' was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and two months later, her husband left her. What did she do?....... Naturally, made a record. The newest Queen Kwong record, Couples Only isn't your typical "divorce record" of reflective poetry, but rather a fiercely raw and emotional look at a great loss and a future recovered. In this episode, Carre' and Joe discuss how she navigated these waters, she shares the improvisational process she uses to make records and we hear why Couples Only has an unlikely pop song on its track listing. Carre' also tells us a wild story from her days opening for Nine Inch Nails and we here a couple tunes.https://www.queenkwong.com/ https://sonicritualrecordings.com/Tour Stories is sponsored by Izotope. I'm thrilled to welcome Carré Callaway and Joe Cardamone, AKA Queen Kwong and Skeleton Joe. Carré talks about growing up in a hotel and her dad's industrial/punk nightclub in Denver. Once she started focusing on music (this would be AFTER her 6th grade band, Population 3) one of her first gigs was opening for Nine Inch Nails and, as she describes it, messing up on a large scale. She's also written music with him that's never come out! But she really started finding her voice after meeting Joe Cardamone from The Icarus Line. With Joe's help Carré has developed a unique, improvisational style of recording albums. In fact, their maxim is the first take may not be the best sounding but it's the most honest. So they try to stick to that whenever possible. It has worked for her albums as well as the Quarentina film project she and Joe collaborated on.Carré also discusses her late diagnosis of cystic fibrosis and how that has affected her. She's got a new album out soon called Couples Only. She tells me why she used that name and how much of the record is about reclaiming her voice after a pretty rough divorce. Joe Cardamone has been on my radar for fifteen years but I actually met him for the first time at Lanegan's funeral. He made a keychain for Mark's friends like the old hotel keys, imprinted with "Mark Lanegan, the Night Porter, 1964-2022." This is our first real conversation and, man, it was really so fantastic to talk to him. Los Angeles native artist Joe Cardamone has lived a few lifetimes while leaving a wiry dent in the global underground music and film scenes. The band that Joe fronted for 17 years, The Icarus Line, formed in East Los Angeles in 1998. Over the course of six albums the punk agitators became an underground phenomenon and the most dangerous, if not the greatest, punk group of their generation. The cult band that never gave up. Performances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in front of 30,000+ fans, multiple appearances on the legendary John Peel show, criss-crossing the US in a van opening a stadium tour for A Perfect Circle and The Cult and a UK tour with Primal Scream are just some of the "greatest hits" of a legend loaded with nearly mythic live performances and chaos. But it was the death of guitarist and original member Alvin DeGuzman in 2017 following a long battle with cancer, which was the actual end of The Icarus Line (a demise recently depicted in Michael Grodner's independent film "The Icarus Line Must Die" which is now streaming on Amazon and Hulu). The following year Joe released his solo debut, the frenzied Holy War album and film on his own imprint American Primitive. Cardamone's new approach was a modern one man show that forged R&B and crushing electronics with the combative spirit of his formative punk years. While crafting a pair of follow up albums in 2020 the world stopped and the QUARENTINA project emerged in response. Outside of his work as an artist Joe has produced and collaborated with some of the greatest artists of our time including Mark Lanegan, lan Astbury, Warren Ellis (Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds) and James Williamson (The Stooges).

This week Thoryn is calling the shots so that means lots of topics, and lots of uninformed takes from Jason. We discuss the Alec Baldwin incident, film labor strikes, Steve Gorman and the faultiness of memory. Then, new records from Brandi Carlisle, Jason Isbell and just in time for Halloween, the Mark Lanegan and Joe Cardamone collaboration: Dark Mark Vs. Skeleton Joe. Later, we discuss the ability of music to elicit memories, the irredeemability of Vince Neil, headbanger chicks, Shkreli's Wu-Tang record, DUNE and the trainwreck that is Black Widow. Also: Thoryn professes his love for Michael Bolton. That alone make this episode worth a listen.
Joe Cardamone joins us on this episode. Even as a kid, Joe was creative (his dad WAS a child actor). He started singing by humming the star wars theme during long car trips as a kid. And he found that art was very therapeutic for him; it's been a driving force that has gotten him through some tragic times, including the deaths of two friends and band members. He started off as a punk kid in Kanker Sores, transitioned into The Icarus Line, and now to a solo career. He has also collaborated with some incredible people like Annie Hardy, Queen Kwong, Ian Ottaway, and Mark Lanegan. Their joint album Skeleton Joe vs Dark Mark, will hopefully be out soon. Over the course of six albums the punk agitators became an underground phenomenon and the most dangerous punk group of their generation. The cult band the never gave up. Cardamone's new album, Quarentina, was birthed from the necessity for distraction and expression. Life gets real hectic real fast and when you are getting dragged down into the sea you better learn to swim. Out of this chaos came some uncut gems, a batch of cool mini songs about love and pain. Tracks done in one or two passes just to grab the moment, not think, and keep flying. A force of nature, the album features 19 songs that were recorded in the matter of a few weeks after the dissolution of a relationship. Sounding so direct you feel like you are in the room with him, Quarentina is the most stripped down, raw and intimate Joe has ever sounded on a record. I spoke via Zoom with Cardamone about his new album and the accompanying short films for it.

Joe Cardamone is a solo artist, producer, and filmmaker now, but for nearly 20 years he was known for being the frontman of the infamously wild LA noise-punk band, The Icarus Line. In what may be our most personal episode yet, Joe talks to us about meeting his idols, loving his mom, getting touched by Jared Leto, and the long road to becoming a better artist (and better person) after enduring tragedy and loss. Joe Cardamone's newest project is a collection of mesmerizing, raw and gritty songs and videos called Holy War. Joe, who previously fronted The Icarus Line, is featured in the film The Icarus Line Must Die, which he wrote with director Michael Grodner. Joe's also part of American Primitive (americanprimitive.org), an L.A.-based cultural creative house and recording studio. This interview was recorded at his Burbank studio, Valley Recording Co. (valleyrecordingcompany.com).
Annie and her best friend since the early 00’s Joe Cardamone (The Icarus Line, Holy War, American Primitive) sit down to talk life, love and Bird Box on this heartwarming episode of Empath of Least Resistance. They also do some ramshackle Ceelo and INXS covers.
Many of us have an ambition to grow older with our sanity intact....doing it gracefully is often the antithesis of what's expected of a rock musician. For See Hear podcast episode 55, Bernie, Tim and Maurice invited Michael Grodner onto the show for a conversation. Michael is the director of 2017 film, The Icarus Line Must Die. The story focuses around real life musician Joe Cardamone. He was the lead singer and creative force behind LA post-punk band, The Icarus Line. Joe is now at the “ripe old age” of 37. He is still unsuccessfully trying to get labels to listen to his band, but he's also dealing with a very supportive yet concerned fiance' who needs him to earn some money for them to put food on the table, band members quitting, spoiled rich kids wasting his studio time, fatally ill friends.....oh, did I mention there's a psychopath sending Joe anonymous death threats? Another exciting day in the life of a rock musician!!!! The See Hear crew speak with Michael about the LA punk scene, working with non-actors, the nature of success, the inspiration of Jim Jarmusch, and laundromats. We're extremely grateful that Michael gave so willingly of his time to speak about his work. We highly recommend you search out The Icarus Line Must Die. You can stream The Icarus Line Must Die on iTunes and Amazon in the US.....watch out for it in other places soon. Huge thanks to Mike White of The Projection Booth for the recommendation and to Karen Oberman for arranging the interview. You can download the show by searching for See Hear podcast on iTunes or download from http://seehear.podbean.com If you dig what we do, could you please rate us at iTunes or even better, spread the word that the show exists on social media or at your next barbecue, gig, or marathon run so more folks can tune in. It's a BEHIND THE LENS that's out of this world thanks to former astronaut and "Global Space Statesman" BUZZ ALDRIN, writer/director MICHAEL GRODNER, and writers/directors/actors DAVID ZELLNER and NATHAN ZELLNER as we look to the stars, the world of punk rock, and a wild western! First up we take a peek into the stars and space exploration with our pre-recorded interview with BUZZ ALDRIN. A sit-down exclusive that preceded film critic debbie elias moderating an intimate Q&A with Buzz on June 21 for the premiere of THE MAN WHO UNLOCKED THE UNIVERSE (a fascinating documentary on Ulugh Beg whose interest and work in astronomy pre-dated that of Galileo by 150 years and set the stage for much of what has come since in our journey to the stars), take a listen as Buzz talks about his latest endeavor, The Human SpaceFlight Institute, and his thoughts on our trajectory to Mars. Then writer/director MICHAEL GRODNER joins BTLRadioShow to talk about his feature directorial debut, THE ICARUS LINE MUST DIE. A renowned director of music videos and creator of DirectyLaundry.TV, Michael continues his longtime love of music and exploration of the visual medium with this narrative feature co-written and starring JOE CARDAMONE, longtime frontman of punk band The Icarus Line. From a true black and white visual palette to non-actors to the affability of Cardamone and the ease and relatability of the story, Michael goes in-depth into the making of ICARUS with a refreshing candor and energy. And then sit back and take a listen to our exclusive interview with filmmakers DAVID ZELLNER and NATHAN ZELLNER as hilarity ensues talking the wild, wacky, and wonderful revisionist western DAMSEL. Co-directors, co-writers and two of the film's stars, the brothers extraordinaire cover everything from their love of classic westerns (and Budd Boetticher) to location shooting to story to miniature horses, chickens, colors, rowboats and coastlines (in a western, yes!), to directing and acting at the same time, and more. The follow-up to their award-winning indie darling "Kumiko The Treasure Hunter", David and Nathan are an effervescent delight! http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

This week's guest on Life In The Stocks is solo artist & performer Joe Cardamone, formerly of The Icarus Line. The topic of death comes up a lot, from the death of David Bowie and the effect that his passing had on the musical community to the passing of Scott Weiland (Joe was actually on the tour that Weiland died on) and the tragic death of Joe's longtime friend & collaborator Alvin DeGuzman, which was still fresh on Joe's mind at this point. It's heavy duty stuff, but also very inspiring. Thank you to Joe for sharing his story.Follow Matt Stocks on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram: @mattstocksdjCheck out the Life In The Stocks Patreon page here: www.patreon.com/lifeinthestocks See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I have mentioned on several episodes and posts that I am metal head. I love Metal, and especially bands like Dillinger Escape plan and Periphery. Before I was a metal head, though my parents and grandparents made sure I had a very wide exposure to music. Growing up I listened to classic rock, big band jazz, 50's and 60's pop and rock. I enjoy the arrangements that went into some of the early pop music. Some songs were very sparse and some were quite elaborate. Some required some amazingly creative thinking on the part of the recording engineers to achieve a certain sound. But then I discovered Metal, in particular Metallica. Metallica had a symphonic quality about them and their longer song structure was like listening to a mini-symphony. But then the "Black Album" happened, and a lot of my metal heroes stopped being metal for a while. So I discovered the Post punk and hardcore scene of the late 70's and early 80's and what ended up being called alternative rock in the 90's. There was a raw quality to the music, and the arrangement was there once again. Of course that scene also dried up and distilled itself into watered down pop leaving me with a craving for something new or perhaps old. It seems while the music that I had enjoyed in my youth was thought to be dead, it was really just a Phoenix getting ready to rise from the ashes. And it turns out so was the post punk hardcore that I enjoyed. And today there is a thriving scene that allows us to not draw lines in the sand and just focus on making great music. And that is What Joe Carmadone does, he makes great music. Listening to the latest Album by the Icarus line is like listening to the audio equivalent of watching someone paint by throwing gobs of it from their brushes. At first it seems like chaos, then a melody emerges. That melody is nurtured and built into a song, and then it all starts again. Talking with Joe, I learned that he a modern guy with old-school sensibility. He knows when something calls for a high tech solution, or when a time tested 50 year recording technique will suffice. How does he know this? Because he is an artist. And artist knows what his tools, respects his tools, and more importantly, knows which tool is best for the job. Joe might have a huge mountain of gear and effects at his disposal, but he uses what is best for the song, for the creation. And that.... is what we discuss in Episode 22. Gear, creating music, and capturing a performance.
