This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode where we first hear a reference to Gryzzle! With the Pawnee-Eagleton merger forcing many cuts, including Pawnee Central High's prom, the Parks Department decides to throw prom for them, obviously on a very limited budget. Leslie meets with the prom committee, including Tom, Ben, Donna, and several high school students, with Leslie particularly impressed with a young lady named Allison Gliffert, who has many impressive Knope-like qualities (and binders). She reminds Leslie of herself, and the two get along great ... in fact, Leslie plans to offer Allison a summer internship with the Parks Department. When Ron finds out about this, we learn that Ron ALSO knows Allison and thinks a lot of her, bristles at the thought of Allison working for the government for free, and coaxes her to instead take a paying job working for his friend at the sawmill. Their clashing ideologies lead Leslie and Ron to butt heads as they try to win Allison over. This persists through both the pre-prom setup and the prom, getting more intense as time goes by, until Allison freaks out and runs away. Meanwhile, during the prom planning, Leslie assigns music to Ben and Tom. As expected, the two have very different tastes, styles, and schools of thought regarding music selection. Not only that, but Tom clearly looks at Ben with disdain, seeing him as an embarassing, out-of-touch old man. At the prom, Tom takes over and plays what he feels are cool, popular "bangers", convinced that everyone will love it. However, he is eventually told by students that they aren't really into his music choices. Tom takes this hard, concerned that he no longer knows what's cool. Finally, excited about the upcoming prom at Pawnee Central High, Andy happily asks April to go with him to prom. Due to her overt hatred for dancing, young people, fun (and apparently punch), April is NOT pleased about this ... but she loves Andy, he finally wins her over, and she reluctantly agrees to go. However, in typical April style, she dresses in all black, remains snarky, and seems to put very little effort into enjoying herself at the prom. She sees Andy cheerful, happy, getting along with everyone, and having a great time ... while she just wants to go home. This all makes her wonder ... how can she love him when she hates everything he loves? As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... As Leslie and Ron clash, can one of their ideologies prevail? Can Ben and Tom ever agree on what to play? Will April stay at the prom? What is the "Leslie Knope 10-Point Insanity Scale"? Is there anything Ben can do to make Tom feel better? Is there anyone that can give April some comfort and advice? Who is ... DJ Robo Drop? Who will the prom king and queen be? Is there a special surprise waiting for Leslie at the end of the episode? Loyal podcast viewers, Mark and Allen have seen some of their largest score differentials here in Season 6. Will this episode continue the trend? Stay tuned to find out! Many thanks to our wonderful sponsor, "Pawnee ... What If?".
First up today, we talked with Dinesh D'Souza about the soon to be released project we've been working on called Police State. Next, we spoke with Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl, who is also an activist, about the heinous attack by Hamas on innocent Israelis. Then friend and former colleague Chuck Marino, with some important information about what you need to do to prepare for a terror attack here. Finally, after warning you to prepare and keep your head on a swivel, Dan had a message for those who support the savages and the savages themselves. Learn more about your ad choices. Aliens, Seinfeld, and desert internet. Pearl Charles (Pearl Charles, The Blank Tapes) "Charles has been playing music since she was 5 years old. At 18, she formed country duo The Driftwood Singers with Christian Lee Hutson, singing and playing guitar and autoharp. At 22, she joined garage rock band The Blank Tapes as drummer. After two fun-filled years immersed in the rock and roll lifestyle, she decided it was time to pursue her own songwriting, and began developing the songs that formed 2015′s eponymous debut EP. Drawn to poppy hooks and catchy choruses, Charles draws on what she loves about the 60s, 70s and 80s while developing her unique style as a solo artist. In 2018, Pearl released debut album, Sleepless Dreamer, which Rough Trade described as "The best country pop we've heard in years" and Buzzfeed called her "A modern June Carter meets Lana Del Rey." With the upcoming release of the follow up, Magic Mirror, out January 15, 2021, Pearl leans into furthering her own brand of country-disco." Host CloudwatcherUno sits down with Pearl Charles who is quite simply a magician who has mastered the dark arts of creating cosmic country music with her album 'Magic Mirror' with stunning songs such as 'Only For Tonight', 'Imposter' and 'What I Need' she has pioneered new territory in combining the worlds of Americana, slide guitar country and western, soft rock disco, piano ballads, pedal steel harpsichord infused Fleetwood Mac, Abba, Toni Brown and Emmylou Harris. Pearl Charles surrounds herself with cool doodads which give her inspiration and positivity inside her home in the desert. Dancing Queen was the jumping off point for Pearl's 'Only For Tonight' Andy is an outlier for the rest of the album as the songs that follow on the album don't continue the Abba-esque music that's captured by Pearl Charles on this track. We talk about astral projection alternate realities and what it means to be truly you in the universe that is constantly changing. "'Tenet' was released in theaters in the second half of 2020 after months of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film’s director, Christopher Nolan, known as a champion of preserving the classic filmgoing experience, was adamant that his movie should be seen on a big screen if at all possible and had shot much of it in the IMAX format for that reason. As a result, it was only more recently available on streaming, whereas many other movies released in recent months reached those platforms relatively more quickly. Both our regular contributors on movies, Jacqueline Soller and Charles Hinshaw, are based in New York City and chose to safely see the movie on IMAX screens, while J. McVay is in Austin, Texas, and decided to rent it at home. The three discuss the film and getting back to going to the movies. Plus live performances from Faith & Majesty and Pearl Charles, both recorded exclusively for BTRtoday. Episode Credits: Producer/Host: J. “Firmly On The Other Side of Your Anti-Frog Friend.” In this episode, we talk about being Half-Vaxxers and Lil Nas X’s new video and sneaker lawsuit. We talk about ethical fruit and Luke solves the Trolley Problem. We advocate for more songs being about frogs and cats and discuss the prevalence of song covers. Luke talks about the night that he was the dancing queen and we prove our nerd credentials. All this while playing a fantastic lineup of sunny and funky jams. Pearl Charles has added yet another beauty to her discography, in the form of her all new album Magic Mirror, and we got the chance to get an in-depth look at it all! It was difficult to follow up 2018's Sleepless Dreamer, but somehow Pearl topped herself with the release of this record. The artist spilled it all on the album's production, what she's been up to over the past year, and the release of potentially even more music coming sometime in 2021. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wewriteaboutmusic/support

Pearl Charles is a singer songwriter who has been recording and touring for the last decade. She started in a band called the Driftwood Singers with singer Christian Lee Hutson. In 2018 she put out a solo album called “Sleepless Dreamer.” And in January of this year she put out a follow up called “Magic Mirror.” I sat down to chat with her about this album, some of her songs, and her musical influences. She has a great sense of style with her music fusing pop, country, and modern sounds in a unique way. I hope you enjoy our talk.

" Kicking off the show today with a new single from Tulsa based phenom, Branjae! The track is called "Free Facts" and you should get yourself acquainted with the story and message on her bandcamp page. While you're there, show your support by purchasing the music as well. Also new to rotation on Ladies Skate Only, INEZ. An incredible vocalist, songwriter, producer and more. Her album Voicemails And Conversations dropped in 2019. It's an album packed full of just that. But these conversations are really making me feel something. I'm gonna keep exploring this album over the next few episodes and I hope you'll do that with me. Plus, new music from Pisha! The project is that of Madeline Kassen (also in Tada!) and all of the tracks keep creeping back into my head. The new album Threnody is both haunting and vibrant and you'll enjoy this new track in the mix. Finally, I've got a set of tunes featuring music from Dirty Projectors, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down and Gemma. I've been listening to music from Thao and Felicia Douglass a lot before bed and I swear it's giving me the coolest dreams. Maybe you should try it too. "2021 has not exactly been 'better' thus far. But, there are some bright spots. For me, the bright spots include the release of Pearl Charles' album, Magic Mirror. It's officially out today and I'll bookend the show with tracks form it! Plus, scroll down to check out her latest video for the track, "Only For Tonight." If you haven't ordered the album yet... what are you waiting for?! Go to her bandcamp now and grab one up. Another 2021 highlight, music from Babehoven. A (new to me) band, currently based in Vermont and fronted by Maya Bon. You'll hear music in today's mix from their upcoming EP, Yellow has a pretty good reputation. It's set for release on January 29th and you can go now and order on their bandcamp page! Another exciting 2021 release? The single 'Emotion' from Molly Burch, just dropped! The track features her Captured Tracks label-mate Wild Nothing (Jack Tatum) and IT'S A BOP! Seriously, go get the 7" (which also features an Ariana Grande cover) on her website RIGHT NOW! I just got one and it's signed to boot! Plus, I've got music from Killola who just announced that they're going to be re-releasing Killola Live in Hollywood. Sonia Barcelona is both a musician & photographer. Named Best of Las Vegas by the Las Vegas Weekly & Desert Companion, Sonia has opened for the likes of Japanese Breakfast, SALES, Deap Vally, and Pearl Charles. She has been featured on VICE TV, Fox5, and ABC networks. After a few years performing at open mics, the desire to further pursue music became apparent. She would quit her job in 2016 to become a full-time artist. Her 2019 debut album "Bitter Melon" brings a new and bigger sound reflective of her 90s grunge rock influences. Her single “Indian Girl” speaks to her Indian & Filipino heritage.
"Starting the show with new music from John Calvin Abney and his album Familiar Ground, which drops next week on Black Mesa Records. Also in the first set, the third single from Pearl Charles and her forthcoming release, Magic Mirror. It's such a good one! Malin Pettersen makes her Alt-Country Show debut and starts off the second set of tunes with her track "Hometown" from her album Wildhorse, which is out now. Also in the set, I continue my obsession with Australicana tunes and feature a track from Magpie Diaries out of Australia! The good tunes continue with music from Jeremy Ivey's new album, Waiting Out The Storm which is available now from ANTI- Records. I've got a double-dose of Jeremy Ivey tunes and I'll tell you about his recent show in Nashville with Country Westerns. Later in the show, a new tune from Strays Don't Sleep and their first release in 15 years! The EP is called 'A Short Film for a Long Story' and you'll definitely want to add it to your collection! There's so much more in the mix as well. Please, find an album you love and support the artists by buying their albums or some merch. "Lydia Loveless' new album, Daughter is officially out today. It's her first release on her own label and I'm in love. If you didn't pre-order, go grab it up now on her bandcamp page. We'll kick off the show with one of my favorites from the album, it's aptly titled "September" and features the incomparable Laura Jane Grace. Rounding out the first alt-country inspired set is Victoria Bailey and a track from her full-length debut! "Jesus, Red Wine & Patsy Cline." It's available now on Rock Ridge Music. Classic country for the 21st century, her voice holds strong alongside her influences, Dolly and Emmylou. The next set kicks off with Tada! Fronted by Madeline Kassen (Pisha), the group out of Boston is making the 'darker moments in life more danceable' with their unique blend of psychedelic dream-pop. Grab their 'Single' EP up and add it to your daily music rotation. There's also a set of tunes from Gainesville, Florida. This music scene has produced legends like Tom Petty and Against Me!. Less than Jake, Sister Hazel and many more bands have formed in the home of The Swamp and the town is still producing one of the best music scenes around. We'll feature a few artists on the show today but be sure to check out the latest edition of Spotlight on The City with Lottie for the full rundown of amazing Gainesville music. "Beyond excited to feature tracks from Dougie Poole, Pearl Charles, Josiah Johnson (formerly of The Head and the Heart) and more incredible new tunes on the show today. The mix starts (and ends) with Dougie Poole and music from his album, Freelancer's Blues which was released in June on Wharf Cat Records. Head over to Dougie's bandcamp and grab this album up because it's definitely in my top five for the year. The track "Los Angeles" which starts off the show is damn near perfect and the video that accompanies (created by Allison Grosso) is quite possibly the highlight of 2020. Next up on the show, the first single from Pearl Charles' forthcoming album, Magic Mirror. The album drops on Kanine Records on January 21, 2021. It's nice to see that there is an end to 2020 and we'll be off to a seemingly wonderful start with the release of this record. OTHER EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Josiah Johnson (The Head and The Heart) has dropped his debut solo effort, Every Feeling On A Loop. It's out now on ANTI- and you'll hear the track "Nobody Knows." Great Peacock are in the mix with a track from their album Forever Worse Better which drops in just a couple weeks on October 9th. Get your pre-order in now! Alison Langerak & Wyatt Tuzo are also in the mix with their track "Crossing Nebraska" which is part of 'The Subtle Incline: A Collaborative Songwriting Experiment' organized by Stereoactive Media. Each artist in the collab was given the same set of lyrics and then created a song around it. The album is available on the Stereoactive Media bandcamp and "100% of proceeds from this release will support The Beat Shop, a music production program at Workshop Houston, which serves youths in and around Houston’s Third Ward neighborhood." 00:00 - Emily (Los Angeles by Dougie Poole) 03:10 - Los Angeles - Dougie Poole 07:20 - Emily (Los Angeles by Dougie Poole) 08:46 - What I Need - Pearl Charles 11:47 - Pour Another Round - Dent May 16:14 - First Man - H. We sat down for a quick conversation with LA songwriter Pearl Charles before her soundcheck at the Basement in Nashville. She fills us in on where to find Mexican food in LA, growing up in California as the child of artists, and the cultural moment the city is currently experiencing. If you’re a fan of Fleetwood Mac, Jenny Lewis, and Gram Parsons, you’ll like Pearl’s approach to songwriting and recording, which she’s aptly described as a mix of country and disco.
