This is a preview of a premium episode from our Patreon feed, Paid Costly For Me! Head over to Patreon.com/PodCastyForMe to hear more for just $5 a month. Today we're talking about the 2005 documentary BUDD BOETTICHER: A MAN CAN DO THAT, which features both Clint Eastwood and Paul Schrader (among others) talking about the elemental western films of Budd Boetticher and his influence on their work. We also talk about some Boetticher films ourselves, and take this moment to go a little deeper on auteur theory - its usefulness, its problems, our relationship to it as a framework. You don't have to watch the doc to enjoy this episode, but it is kind of fun if you can track it down! Although we've discussed some of his favorite directors like Terrence Malick & Neil Jordan tangentially in the past, I was thrilled to bring him back to the podcast this time to focus on the filmmaker who helmed his favorite movie of all time Barry Lyndon. An engaging and insightful journey into Ebiri's own life & career exploring the work of Stanley Kubrick, which is one of his particular areas of expertise, over the course of two jam-packed hours of conversation, we explore the films Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, & The Shining. Unable to stop asking him questions about the rest of Kubrick's filmography, the result is a highly entertaining, story-filled exchange that's sure to be a new favorite among cinephiles. Moreover, following the podcast's three most recent installments covering French Crime Movies, the oeuvre of actor-producers Amy Robinson & Griffin Dunne, & the Ranown Westerns of Budd Boetticher, this episode is the perfect way to close out what has unofficially become Watch With Jen's Criterion Collection-centric July. Talking Movies With Ty and Theresa

Hi there, listeners! For part 2 of our series on the evolution of the Western, we're taking a look at Howard Hawks 1959 classic, Rio Bravo. In the 1950s, the Western genre increasingly began to enter darker, less romanticized territory, with the nerve-jangling violence and psychological complexity of films by Anthony Mann, Budd Boetticher, and others. Even John Ford's work began to grow darker and more cynical. At the same time, though, the genre was becoming popular on television, with the low key charms and genial nature one associates with the small screen in full effect. Rio Bravo, despite its big screen pedigree and a world class filmmaker at the helm, is rooted firmly in the latter group. John Wayne, at his most John Wayne, plays a no-nonsense small-town sheriff tasked with a seemingly suicidal mission, aided only by a “drunk and a crippled old man” Asked if that's all he's got, Wayne corrects his friend - “That's… what I got.” And so proceeds a typically Hawksian study of professionalism and personal responsibility. But despite the gravity of the setup, the film's tone is largely light throughout, with the humor and warmth of the characters lingering in the mind much more strongly than the suspense of their predicament. Robin Wood, the celebrated film critic and academic, once said that if he had to pick a single film that justified the existence of Hollywood, he'd choose Rio Bravo. It's a film of enormous complexity, as he explicated in his book analyzing the film. But it's also a film of intense surface level charm, one that with every viewing evokes the joy of leisurely spending time in the company of old friends.

Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. First I chat with Christian Petzold, the delightful director of Transit, Phoenix, Barbara, and now Undine, which comes out June 4. Undine is about a Berlin historian(Paula Beer) who may be a figure from ancient myth. She gives regular lectures in tours of the municipal museum, and eventually she connects with an industrial diver (Franz Rogowski). This being a Petzold movie, there are layers of history and myth that haunt the main plot. I reached Petzold at his office in Berlin over Zoom, with the occasional help of a translator. Then I chat with writer and critic Bruce Bennett about the director Budd Boetticher and his tightly wound westerns. Bruce also shares insights about story mechanics from his current job: writing for a true crime TV show. Our conversation went long and was so much fun that I'm publishing it in two parts.

Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 131, originally published in March 2013. Astrologer Jeff Harman is a second-generation astrologer with over 36 years of experience consulting with people from around the world on personal and business needs. Jason Hartman and Jeff Harman engage in a discussion of the world's possible economic future, and Jeff forecasts several future events based on global cycles, including a global electronic, cashless society by 2020. He says the next major alignment that is coming into play is 2020 and there is a big disruptive cycle coming up between now and 2015 that could bring a lot of turmoil in the financial markets that will lead to this cashless society. Jeff also explains how astrology has been used throughout history for advice on wars and other events, and the validity of ancient astrology versus the sun sign astrology that came about in the ‘60s. As Jeff explains, just like with physics, if an event or phenomenon is repeatable, it becomes something that can be relied upon or something that works, and it does have a very high degree of accuracy. Jeff spent many years in Beverly Hills and has clients in all areas of the entertainment industry. He is a member of the Council on Vedic Astrology, the American Federation of Astrologers, and the National Center for Geocosmic Research. He utilizes Classical, Vedic, Kabbalistic, and Astro-location Astrology. Jeff has appeared on many radio shows including Veritas Radio with Mel Fabregas, Coast to Coast AM with George Noory, as well as many other shows. Besides being a life-long astrologer, Jeff Harman owns Conjunction Entertainment, a new motion picture company. Jeff has a diverse career in the entertainment industry and a technical background in the areas of audio forensics, audio engineering, electronic design consulting and acoustical consulting. Jeff has taught physics of sound and acoustics, electronics, and advanced acoustical design, testing and audio engineering. Time for a new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema, friends! This week, Josh and Scott are going it alone again as they return to the scene of a very dastardly crime. Last month, the crime was that of a defenseless woman being abducted by two nefarious bank robbers; this month, the crime is that of a defenseless woman being abducted by two nefarious...people whose identities are obscured. That's right, we're talking about the 1997 remake of That Darn Cat on this episode of the show, and both Josh and Scott are amazed at how different so much of the film is aside from the title and very basic premise. Sure, there's a teenager (Christina Ricci) and an FBI agent (Doug E. Doug), but the original film didn't have warring mechanics, two nagging parents, a pair of doofus security guards, a wig-wearing butcher, and references to the films of Budd Boetticher! How much can be attributed to the film's writers, who also wrote Ed Wood and last year's American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson? Is this film an improvement on the original? Is there a way for Josh to shoehorn in political references this week? Find out now!

James Schamus has somehow made a career of toeing this (likely constructed) dichotomy, helping produce some of the early independent films of the 1990s before becoming the co-founder of Focus Features, which made films like The Pianist, Atonement, Brokeback Mountain, and Moonrise Kingdom, as well as a collaborator of Ang Lee, writing the screenplays for The Ice Storm, Ride With The Devil, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. James discusses this work between the politics of making art for specialty audiences, as well as his interest in the very nature of art through his work as a theorist and professor at Columbia University. They then turn to his directorial debut, an adaptation of Philip Roth's Indignation, and what it means to modulate performance. Finally, the two discuss Budd Boetticher's 1957 hostage western The Tall T, and what a specialty art house producer can learn from watching Randolph Scott contemplate existence in this low budget western. 0:00-3:57 Opening 5:08-17:11 Establishing Shots — 4 Years of The Cinephiliacs 17:56-1:06:20 Deep Focus — James Schamus 1:07:21-1:11:32 Sponsorship Section 1:12:33-1:22:44 Double Exposure — The Tall T (Budd Boetticher) 1:22:50-1:27:00 Close // Outtake
