The Old 97's have been keeping the fire of alt-country lit for over 30 years and have never lost their vibrant spirit. A lot of that is thanks to jubilant front man Rhett Miller. Whether with the band or on his equally excellent solo outings, Rhett has set himself apart as one of the most engaging artists and songwriters around. That spirit is on display in a new Old 97s record called American Primitive, a 2022 solo album called The Misfit, and even his fun podcast called Wheels Off. He joins us this week to talk about all of it and more. He's truly one of the nicest guys around. Enjoy!    www.rhettmiller.com www.old97s.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

Episode 294: Formed in Dallas in 1992, Old 97's became one of the seminal bands of the alternative country movement, alongside Whiskeytown, Son Volt, the Bottle Rockets and BR549. At its heart was the longtime friendship of bass player Murry Hammond and guitarist/songwriter Rhett Miller. Remarkably, across 13 albums and millions of miles, Old 97's remains the same quartet that broke out on Bloodshot Records three decades ago. They're still having fun and keeping company with their large base of lifelong fans. Craig made a field trip to Lexington, KY this summer to catch a show and sit down with Miller to talk about the long road and the newest album American Primitive.

Music fans know Rhett Miller as the lead singer of Old 97's, a beloved band that has released 13 studio bang-up albums over the last 30 years, including 2024's American Primitive. Disc golf players, of which Rhett is a dedicated one, think of him as a disc golfer, which he is, as I just said. Besides, they're too busy getting annoyed at people calling it Frisbee golf. In this soothing, beddy-bye interview, Rhett walks us through the sport, and also explains why Wikipedia lists five Old 97's band members. The fifth member? Fred Armisen. Mary Oliver's Spring with Clairette Durand-Gasselin This week in This is not a poem Elliott KB looks into American poet Mary Oliver's Spring alongside poet and artist Clairette Durand-Gasselin, who has a personal translation of the text. Bringing up questions like “why does this poem make me cry?” and “how do we translate the untranslatable?”, they discuss how a person's reading of a poem can be intimately personal, the beauty of nature, and how seemingly plain English can evoke overwhelming emotions.  Who is Mary Oliver? Mary Oliver (September 10, 1935 – January 17, 2019) was an acclaimed American poet celebrated for her deep connection to nature. Born in Ohio, USA, Oliver's poetry, marked by lyrical reflections on the natural world, gained widespread acclaim with her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection, “American Primitive” (1983), followed by other accolades.   Guest Speaker, Clairette Durand-Gasselin Clairette Durand-Gasselin is a bilingual poet and visual artist. Sunday morning at home. The hum of my children's voices. The scent of cinnamon and pumpkin waffles. I roam from room to room, seeking a patch of autumn light on which to lay my mat. I settle on a place in the midst of it all, between the portal and the kitchen — only to discover this morning's practice is simply to lay my tired heart in sunlight.“In Blackwater Woods” is with me again. Some poems are like this — seasonal visitors. Some poems are very old friends.Look, the trees are turning their own bodies into pillarsof light, are giving off the rich fragrance of cinnamon and fulfillment, the long tapers of cattails are bursting and floating away over the blue shouldersof the ponds, and every pond, no matter what its name is, isnameless now. Every year everything I have ever learnedin my lifetime leads back to this: the fires and the black river of loss whose other sideis salvation, whose meaningnone of us will ever know. To live in this worldyou must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold itagainst your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.-“In Blackwater Woods” by Mary Oliver, from American PrimitiveMary Oliver published “In Blackwater Woods” in 1983, near the time when I was born. She won the Pulitzer Prize for American Primitive a year later. It's a feat I wonder about, as my mother (also named Mary and endowed with unassuming brilliance) accomplished things in her professional life and suffered notoriety for it.I consider “In Blackwater Woods” a friend. You may, too. This was Mary's magic. She made us feel like kin — muddling through the woods of life together until, possibly, stumbling into splendorous stillness. There's a story about how she once found herself in the woods with no writing implement, and thereafter began to hide pencils in the trees. The moment of the season has arrived when I find myself once again in Blackwater Woods. Among its short lines and spare turns, this poem has offered me generous attendance over the years. Some years have felt like cinnamon and fulfillment. Some, like nameless ponds. In Blackwater Woods, we come to witness. We are tasked with the joy and grief of this place. It's a practice of bearing presence. Paradox is a formidable teacher. How can we embrace ephemerality? How can we give ourselves to grief while not allowing it to swallow us whole? How can we live in this world, hold it against our bones, knowing it can burn?Make no mistake, Blackwater Woods is burning. Nevertheless, the cattails are our brothers and sisters. The autumn, our guide. The trees are golden in their essence. The setting (which my dear friend Lindsay, no stranger to Blackwater Woods, describes as no grand forest but a humble place…) shimmers with teachings. Here, simplicity is resplendent. We give our attention. We study our namelessness, all that which was never ours to keep. We lay down in the sorrow and solace that touches everything. And, somehow, in so doing, we learn to live in this world with its watery depths and a singular word: salvation. Get full access to The Guest House at shawnparell.substack.com/subscribe

This week on Transmissions, Jesse Sheppard and Drew Gardner, the psychedelic folk duo Elkhorn. Their new album, On the Universe In All Directions, finds Jesse once again at his familiar 12-string acoustic guitar, but instead of Drew joining with his trademark Telecaster, he's moved over to vibraphone and drums for this outing. Have no fear: the familiar Elkhorn magic is here in spades, but in brand new ways. The songs were born out of collaboration with New York consciousness group Psychedelic Sangha, and as JJ Toth puts it in his excellent liner notes, the sounds traverse “the valleys between fried cosmic psychedelia and American Primitive… splitting the difference between Popol Vuh's devotional drift and the outer reaches of deep-cut classic rock while constantly keeping one foot in the river of the Ever-Weird America; call it Six Degrees of Uncle Dave Macon.”  From Buddhism to Fahey, from time slips to Aquarium Drunkard itself, this conversation unfolds and wanders, we hope you enjoy it. Welcome to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions. Our guest today on the show Glenn Jones, who joins us to discuss his new album Vade Mecum, out now on Thrill Jockey Records, as well as touch on and illuminate the complicated legacy of John Fahey. Both solo and as a member of Cul-de-Sac, Jones has been a force of creative energy in the world of solo acoustic guitar, guitar soli, or American Primitive music, a term we discuss in this chat. Before we get into the talk, we want to acknowledge a debt of gratitude to Steve Lowenthal, for his great book on Fahey, Dance of Death: The Life of John Fahey, American Guitarist. Though we mostly focus on Jones' own work—and the new album is a fantastic example of what makes him such an enduring presence in the avant-guitar field—we do at one point shift into discussion of the complicated relationship Fahey had with race. Steve's book serves as a great resource. We also want to thank Glenn for the candidness and honesty he brought to our talk.  I want to thank you for listening to Transmissions. Joe Cardamone has been on my radar for fifteen years but I actually met him for the first time at Lanegan's funeral. He made a keychain for Mark's friends like the old hotel keys, imprinted with "Mark Lanegan, the Night Porter, 1964-2022." This is our first real conversation and, man, it was really so fantastic to talk to him.   Los Angeles native artist Joe Cardamone has lived a few lifetimes while leaving a wiry dent in the global underground music and film scenes. The band that Joe fronted for 17 years, The Icarus Line, formed in East Los Angeles in 1998. Over the course of six albums the punk agitators became an underground phenomenon and the most dangerous, if not the greatest, punk group of their generation. The cult band that never gave up. Performances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in front of 30,000+ fans, multiple appearances on the legendary John Peel show, criss-crossing the US in a van opening a stadium tour for A Perfect Circle and The Cult and a UK tour with Primal Scream are just some of the "greatest hits" of a legend loaded with nearly mythic live performances and chaos. But it was the death of guitarist and original member Alvin DeGuzman in 2017 following a long battle with cancer, which was the actual end of The Icarus Line (a demise recently depicted in Michael Grodner's independent film "The Icarus Line Must Die" which is now streaming on Amazon and Hulu). The following year Joe released his solo debut, the frenzied Holy War album and film on his own imprint American Primitive. Cardamone's new approach was a modern one man show that forged R&B and crushing electronics with the combative spirit of his formative punk years. While crafting a pair of follow up albums in 2020 the world stopped and the QUARENTINA project emerged in response. Outside of his work as an artist Joe has produced and collaborated with some of the greatest artists of our time including Mark Lanegan, lan Astbury, Warren Ellis (Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds) and James Williamson (The Stooges).

Acoustic versus electric: once upon a time it was an issue — infamously with Bob Dylan's plugged-in performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Electric won that round, at least for guitars and popular music. But by the mid 1970's acoustic was back, with the rise of Windham Hill Records and its purist approach to so-called "American Primitive" guitar and piano. Many innovations have come and gone in the evolution of music since then. We still have purely acoustic folk, jazz, new age, and classical music, but without much fuss, electro-acoustic hybrids have become increasingly mainstream. Acoustic instruments provide a familiar, comforting, organic sound, and support musical expression; electronics expand the subtle dimensions of tone, imagery, and ethereality. Together they make a potent contemporary combination. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we explore the transition from acoustic to electro-acoustic, on a program called TRANSONIC. Music is by WILL ACKERMAN, JEFF OSTER, & TOM EATON, DAVID MICHAEL, WILL ACKERMAN solo, RYAN JUDD, TOM EATON solo, JEFF PEARCE, RUSSEL WALDER, and DAGOBERT BÖHM.
