On the 60th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, comic, musician from the Ace Frehley Tribute Band, "Ack!" and host of the podcast, Another FN Podcast, Izzy Presley, to review the 1987 breakthrough album from The Cult, "Electric." Electric was The Cult's third studio album. The band recorded twelve new tracks for album to be tentatively called Peace. When they brought the album to legendary Hip-Hop producer, Rick Rubin, they decided to re-record the songs with Rub at the helm. What they came up with is a whole new sound for the band. Rubin took advantage of the band's talent and created a sound which would become their signature. The band went from goth rock to hard rock. A stripped down ACDC type of music led by charismatic frontman, Ian Astbury with his unique vocals, blistering guitar riffs by guitarist Billy Duffy and a rhythm section of Jamie Stewart on bass and Les Warner killing it on drums. The lyrics were written by Astbury & Duffy with the exception of the cover song. The album went to number 38 on US Billboard charts and eventually platinum. Songs like Wild Flower, Lil' Devil and Love Removal Machine have become rock radio staples and this album broke The Cult in the US and onto more mainstream success. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was the Patreon pick. See what gets discussed more, Rubin's production, Duffy's riffs, the similarity between songs or Izzy's poor music taste... In our usual Christmas episode, Brett, Phil and Martin choose our papers and podcasts of 2023. Is there a mismatch between how you thought your life would look and how it's going?
The leap from elite athlete to the next chapter in life isn't always straightforward, and for three-time AFL premiership Richmond player David (Dave) Astbury it came with a lot of ‘discomfort.' But being the curious type, Dave set out to find answers to the many questions he was faced with – a rewarding journey that's taken him to a place of self-discovery and mindfulness, and to where he finds himself now. Backed by his resilience, ability to connect with others, and positive outlook Dave is now a mindset coach with High Performance Mindfulness – working with the likes of the Hockeyroos – while also studying Psychological Science. So how is this self-confessed ‘girl-guy' not only shaping his future, but of those around him? The sixth installment of this podcast series introduces a brand new player into the story of DNA: a technique from physics called X-ray crystallography. This technique would eventually play a key role in unlocking the secrets of DNA structure, but this 1938 paper by Leeds-based scientists William Astbury and Florence Bell marks the first instance of anyone attempting to use X-rays for the visualization of the nucleic acids. It is also the first paper in this series where the main contributor to the work was a woman. Sharing their insights about the significance of the “X-Ray Study of Thymonucleic Acid” which was published in the prestigious journal Nature (v. 141: 747-748), are: Manju Bansal, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore Kersten Hall, University of Leeds Matthew Meselson, Harvard University Jan Witkowski, Cold Spring Laboratory More resources and podcasts available at https://www.chstm.org/video/144 Recorded on April 4, 2023.
Would you agree that men today seem ‘detached' from a true path in life? Statistically men in their 30s and 40s are feeling unfulfilled, depressed, and wanting more out of life. Men are struggling to connect and express themselves to become ‘whole' men. Sadly, many are drifting wondering, “Is this it?” The luxury home, sports car, expensive watch, and dream vacations are not filling the gaps. And they never will. What we know to be true is that experiences, typically with other people, are what bring fullness, purpose and meaning to life. But where can men go for this mindset shift? The Whole Man Academy, created by our guest today, Anthony Astbury, is a powerful network of adventurous and bold men looking to live well and live that epic life. “When it comes to emotions, as men, we've not grown up with it being okay to express your emotions. That does not mean you'd go online taking pictures of yourself looking sad all the time... I think that means you finding a close strong network of men or women around you who you can say whatever you want to say." - Anthony Astbury Time Stamps 1:00 – Welcome to the ‘Strong by Design' podcast 4:24 - Get to know today's special guest, Anthony Astbury, founder of Whole Man Academy 9:21 - Why podcasting is important and powerful 13:09 - Anthony recounts his life 10 years ago and what led him to uncover the power of personal development 17:42 - How he discovered his interests in life 19:32 - Discover Anthony's journey of self-improvement and personal development and how it led him to specialize in coaching men to master their mindset 25:02 - Anthony on helping men lead their version of an epic life with 'Whole Man Academy' 27:32 - Men and emotions: Why do men take their own lives a lot more than women? 36:08 - The taste of living with the TRUTH over comfort 38:16 - Understanding the mission of 'Whole Man Academy' 42:03 - Anthony talks about his powerful 'Date with Destiny' experience 50:44 - One Day or Day One? 54:03 - The power of having men's support groups 1:00:22 - Why should you just sit down and contemplate more 1:11:41 - Where you can go to connect with Anthony Astbury and get to know more about the 'Whole Man Academy' Resources: Whole Man Academy Connect w/ Anthony: Instagram LinkedIn Connect w/ CriticalBench: Youtube Facebook Instagram CriticalBench.com StrongByDesignPodcast.com

By the time I'd finished chatting with Tess Astbury and Ben Slore, the incredibly resourceful and consciously-minded couple responsible for establishing Huntingdon Tier Forest Retreat in Dysart, Tasmania, I'd realised this pair were truly a couple of kindred spirits. With an unflinching commitment to sustainability and repurposing of materials, Ben and Tess, via Facebook marketplace, procured a decommissioned school bus otherwise destined for scrap metal and relocated it to a picture-perfect plot of land in the Tasmanian Southern Midlands. What followed was a process of painstakingly converting the bus and immediate surrounds into a truly one of a kind, minimal footprint getaway for two, utilising found and secondhand items. This included the property's hot tub, which after much trial and error Ben managed to eventually set up to operate using the process of thermosiphoning, or in layman's terms heating without a traditional pump. Now almost two years down the track, Tess and Ben have accumulated 262 Airbnb reviews with an average score of 4.98 out of 5 and were last year named finalists in the Airbnb host awards for best unique stay. With their future plans including the set up of another converted bus on the same site, this industrious duo have a bright and creative future ahead of them. I hope you enjoy hearing all about their story in this value-packed episode today.
Seventy years since James Watson and Francis Crick first revealed DNA's double-helix structure, Dr Kersten Hall shares the story of the scientist who almost beat them to their major discovery: molecular biologist William Astbury. Speaking with Emily Briffett, Kersten details how, despite missing this major opportunity, Astbury forged a new discipline, made pioneering steps in the field of X-ray crystallography – and also wore a coat made of peanuts. (Ad) Kersten Hall is the author of The Man in the Monkeynut Coat: William Astbury and How Wool Wove a Forgotten Road to the Double-Helix (Oxford University Press, 2014). Fans, Flouncers, Fundamentalists: Understanding Online Archers Fan CulturesClaire AstburyFans of The Archers interact in many different groups across multiple online platforms. This chapter explores the motivations of moderators in establishing groups and of fans in joining them, considers how different groups develop their own subcultures, and summarises the benefits of online engagement for fans. The findings are based on two surveys in December 2019 and January 2020. The results indicated that fans noticed different cultures in different online spaces, and that they moved into spaces they preferred, and left those which they didn't enjoy. The research also confirmed the existence of multiple fan spaces which have evolved from a base of Archers listeners, whilst being focused on other outside interests. Despite some adverse experiences which were described by respondents to the survey, the benefits of online engagement were very clearly articulated. A sense of community, personal friendships and emotional support featured strongly for fans involved in online discussions.Claire Astbury has been an Archers listener since 2002 and was a regular contributor to the former BBC The Archers messageboards, known as Mustardland. More recently, she has participated in various online fan groups and is a long time callerinerer to the DumTeeDum podcast. Since the start of the coronavirus lockdown(s) in March 2020, she has spent more time involved in Archers fan activity than actually listening to the programme, being a regular attendee of the Saturday Academic Archers group and DumTeeDum zoom meetups. Her career as a housing professional with 25 years' experience informed her analysis of rural housing issues which was presented to the 2018 Academic Archers conference at the British Library and included in Flapjacks and Feudalism: Social Mobility and Class in The Archers (Courage & Headlam, 2020). In this book, her research into online fan cultures and subcultures has been expanded from her presentation to the 2020 Academic Archers conference in Reading.

Joe Cardamone has been on my radar for fifteen years but I actually met him for the first time at Lanegan's funeral. He made a keychain for Mark's friends like the old hotel keys, imprinted with "Mark Lanegan, the Night Porter, 1964-2022." This is our first real conversation and, man, it was really so fantastic to talk to him. Los Angeles native artist Joe Cardamone has lived a few lifetimes while leaving a wiry dent in the global underground music and film scenes. The band that Joe fronted for 17 years, The Icarus Line, formed in East Los Angeles in 1998. Over the course of six albums the punk agitators became an underground phenomenon and the most dangerous, if not the greatest, punk group of their generation. The cult band that never gave up. Performances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in front of 30,000+ fans, multiple appearances on the legendary John Peel show, criss-crossing the US in a van opening a stadium tour for A Perfect Circle and The Cult and a UK tour with Primal Scream are just some of the "greatest hits" of a legend loaded with nearly mythic live performances and chaos. But it was the death of guitarist and original member Alvin DeGuzman in 2017 following a long battle with cancer, which was the actual end of The Icarus Line (a demise recently depicted in Michael Grodner's independent film "The Icarus Line Must Die" which is now streaming on Amazon and Hulu). The following year Joe released his solo debut, the frenzied Holy War album and film on his own imprint American Primitive. Cardamone's new approach was a modern one man show that forged R&B and crushing electronics with the combative spirit of his formative punk years. Have you ever dreamt of starting over to create a life of more impact and more fulfillment? In 2016, Anthony Astbury did just that. He left a 20-year career as a trader and broker and completely changed his world. On his journey to self-discovery and personal improvement, he began specializing in coaching men to master their mindsets, and in 2018 he launched the Whole Man Academy, which connects men through live and online events and gives them the tools to develop strength, resiliency, and confidence. In this episode, we talk about how our culture encourages men to be and act a certain way, which contributes to burnout, destructive coping mechanisms, and can even lead to suicide. We also talk comparison syndrome, the unique challenges that men face (especially with the proliferation of social media), and what Anthony is doing to change the course for so many men. And don't miss our discussion on fatherhood, the universal challenges of being a parent, and why homeschooling does not mean your kid will turn out weird! https://www.larocquelife.com/blog-feed/68
On the afternoon of Thursday, July 6, 1978, high schooler Alain Boulanger was riding his motorcycle on the back trails south of Lennoxville when he spotted a man lying on the ground off Astbury road, near route 143, and about 11 kilometers south of Sherbrooke. Alarmed, Boulanger rode home to tell his mother. And this is how you know you've arrived in S-Town; the mother immediately informed her child to go back and check if the man was dead. It is vital to your life to able to take stock of where you are and start creating your life by design. Anthony discusses the upcoming issues that the Covid-19 has created and why he felt he had to have a life with impact and provide a switch from the mainstream media.
The Whole Man Academy is here to help men do life better (and women as well if they want to join in), but how do you do that? Mainly to add value to your lives. Through thought-provoking content, meet-ups, and opportunities for guys to raise their game through the network of brilliant gents we have on board. A mind-blowing 30-minute exercise that will save you years of wasted life and future regrets so that you never feel life has passed you by. So what’s it all about? Men today are under more pressure than ever to be successful at work, to build and support happy and healthy families, to exercise and eat properly, to dress well, and to think and say the right things. We are juggling so much expectation, and when your diary is busy you might not have time to sit down and evaluate what you really want in life. It’s easy to sleepwalk from one week to the next, living moment to moment, not really understanding that the actions we take today, however small, can add up to larger changes further down the line. We don’t want to live our life with regrets. Regrets can be things you did or didn’t do. The job you didn’t take, the person you didn’t ask out, the email you didn’t send, the risk you didn’t take, the thing you said that you instantly regretted. Could have, would have, should have. You can avoid regrets by changing your behaviour. But where do you start? In the WMA How To Do Life Better Exercise, we look at the areas of your life that are important to you, and which you might choose to do better. The things you could and maybe should have worked on, but just didn’t get round to because you didn’t take the time, were scared to take action, or didn’t feel you had the resources and support to follow through on. Let’s take action now and start moving forward. But here is the challenge. Give yourself the gift of some self-reflection Download it, have a go. See what comes up And then let us know what are the action steps you are going to take. It’s easy to say that we should always look on the bright side of things and ‘cheer up’, and I firmly believe in the power of positive thinking. But we are in uncharted territory. Being strong doesn't mean keeping your issues to yourself. A man who is comfortable in his own skin can say ‘it’s been challenging’. We think it helps to release the pressure valve and help navigate this sometimes topsy-turvy world. This week we set all the men listening a challenge. The entire reason the Whole Man Academy was started is to encourage guys to get together to talk. What we soon realised is that talking wasn’t going to be enough to help men do life better. We started a podcast, we started live zoom calls, we started the eLetter. We saw guys hungry for practical advice on all segments of the pie of man. Health, wealth, mindset, fitness, relationships, list. goes. on. It’s OK to say the last 6 months have been very challenging for many of us guys. Stress, uncertainty, isolation, worry, purpose, self-worth, lack of purpose. Even if you haven't, you will probably know someone who has had to contend with some of these. They are all things I have heard from guys recently, and from a mixture of sectors, ages, salary brackets, locations, beliefs, and levels of perceived success in life. It’s OK to feel any or all of these, and that can be for a fleeting moment or a prolonged period. So this week we invite you to take on our challenge and contact your mates. Check-in. Who might you contact? What might you achieve by contacting them? What could the long term benefits be of just picking up the phone for a chat. Who knows. But at least you tried. www.wholemanacademy.com

Carl and Richard talk to Richard Astbury about migrating applications to Azure. The conversation starts out dealing with the basic idea of why you would migrate to the cloud - typically right before you have to buy more hardware to scale up or replace existing equipment. Richard then walks through the various challenges of migration, including migrating data, determining the particular style of cloud you want to use, maximizing advantages while minimizing cost. He talks about the fact that Java applications can be easier to migrate into Azure worker roles, since they tend to live in a sandbox and not touch the restricted elements of Windows inside the Azure world. Richard also digs into bootstrapping, providing links to tools to facilitate getting a worker role instance up and running with all the bits you need. Finally, the conversation digs into taking advantage of Azure - optimizing designs to reduce cost as well as utilizing the resources of Azure including Azure Fabric, Service Bus, diagnostics, etc.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/net-rocks/donations
