From his early beginnings, through the meteoric rise of INXS, to his current musical endeavours with AshenMoon, Garry's story is a testament to passion, resilience, and evolution in the music industry.Early Life and Musical GenesisBorn in Manly, Sydney, Australia, Garry was introduced to the world of music during his high school years. He initially picked up the acoustic guitar and formed a band with his schoolmates. A twist of fate led him to switch to the bass guitar, a decision that would shape his entire future . The transition was serendipitous, and paved the way for him to meet Andrew Farriss. Together, they formed the band Dr. Dolphin, which eventually evolved into The Farriss Brothers, and later, the globally acclaimed INXS. INXS emerged as a powerhouse in the rock and new wave scenes of the 80s and 90s. The band's unique blend of rock, pop, and dance elements resonated with audiences worldwide. Garry's bass lines became the backbone of numerous chart-topping hits, including "Need You Tonight," "Devil Inside," "Never Tear Us Apart," and "Suicide Blonde." Garry also co-wrote several tracks like "Listen Like Thieves," "Don't Change," and "Perfect Strangers." The band toured relentlessly and Michael Hutchence's dynamic stage presence solidified the band's reputation, leading to sales of over 70 million albums and induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. Following Michael's tragic passing in 1997, INXS faced tumultuous times. Garry explored various musical avenues and in 89, during a hiatus from INXS, joined the group Absent Friends.Garry soonn relocated to Los Angeles, immersing himself in songwriting and production. His passion for craftsmanship led him to design and build his own line of bass guitars under the brand GGB Basses, merging his love for music with his skills in woodwork and electronics. Garry co-founded AshenMoon when he teamed up with fellow Australian vocalist Toby Rand. The band embarked on a journey to create a fresh yet nostalgically resonant sound.

1988 - November: Bon Jovi "New Jersey"

Bon Jovi took the rock world by storm with their massive third album, "Slippery When Wet."  A big tour followed, and afterwards the band was anxious to demonstrate that they were not a one (album) hit wonder.  They got into the studio at Vancouver, BC in May of 1988 and quickly recorded their fourth studio album entitled New Jersey.  Originally going under the working title "Sons of Beaches," the band would settle on their home state as the name of the album.  Bon Jovi wanted to make a double album, but the record label balked, fearing that the higher price tag of a double album would impact sales.  The album still clocked in at close to an hour of play length, not uncommon during a time when CD's were beginning to stretch the length of albums past the more common album play times. The result was a stellar success, debuting on the Billboard 200 albums chart at number 8, before moving to the top spot a week later, where it would remain for four weeks.  Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote most of the songs on the album, with some assistance from songwriter Desmond Child.  Five singles from the album went into the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with two topping that chart.Bon Jovi would go on to an unusual achievement - remaining one of rock music's A-listers for decades.  Bon Jovi would continue to sell out arenas, a feat limited to groups such as U2, Metallica, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones.  Friend of the show Julie Doran brings us this stellar album.  We are also joined by friend of the show Steve Hardin as we cover for the absence of both Wayne and Lynch this week. In addition, fan of the Show Christian joins us to help Rob bring his Staff Pick.  Bad MedicineJon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora collaborate with Desmond Child in the writing of this song which went to number 1 on the US charts.  The lyrics are pretty straightforward, comparing love to a drug.  "There ain't no doctor that can cure my disease."  The video features hand-held cameras provided to fans at the concert providing their "point of view" at the concert.Living In SinThe fifth single from the album still broke into the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100.  This power ballad has lyrics that explore love being more powerful than the expectations of society.  Bon Jovi is singing about his high school sweetheart, whom he would marry in Las Vegas while on the New Jersey Syndicate tour.Born to Be My BabyThis single is another example for the collaboration with Desmond Child, and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song has a lot of similarities with Springsteen, with lyrics about a couple of working class lovers facing the world together.  The video took the opposite direction from many highly produced videos of the time, opting for low budget black-and-white.I'll Be There For YouThe big hit from the album was this number 1 power ballad.  With a runtime of 5:43, this song is the longest song to hit number 1 on the charts in 1989.  The lyrics describe a guy desperately seeking to get his girl back, this time forever.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Put a Little Love in Your Heart by Al Green and Annie Lennox (from the motion picture “Scrooged”)Bill Murray stars in this retelling of "A Christmas Carol." STAFF PICKS:Armageddon It by Def LeppardRob starts off the staff picks with the sixth single from the multi-platinum album, "Hysteria."  High School Student and Fan of the Show, Christian, assists with his thoughts on the band. By the time this song hit number 3 on the US charts, the album had been out for well over a year.  The lyrics are a play on words - “Hey, but are you gettin' it?  Armageddon it.”Desire by U2Julie's staff pick has a blues feel and a Bo Diddley beat.  The song is both a critique of the glitzy televangelist making money off his followers, and the ambition and glitz surrounding a successful rock band.  It won a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group in 1989. I'm Sorry by Hothouse FlowersBruce features a long lost hit from a Dublin group that combines Irish music with an eclectic mix of soul, gospel, and rock influences.  You know, we all have times when we're "sitting back on our deep pile reclining chair" thinking about our lives and “looking over our misdemeanors, misgivings, misfortunes, and Miss Whatever her name is," and say "I'm sorry.”Never Tear Us Apart by INXSSteve closes out the staff picks this week.  INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence wrote the lyrics that describe a couple with an instant, almost karmic connection when they first meet.    This is the fourth single off the album "Kick" and went to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. COMEDY TRACK:Wild Thing by Sam KenisonThe sultry sounds of Sam Kenison take us out with this angry cover of the Troggs classic.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. On the 46th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review rock band INXS' 1987 monster album, "Kick." Kick was the Australian band INXS' 6th solo studio album. The album catapulted INXS in superstardom, especially in the United States, where the album went 6x platinum and also selling over 20 million albums worldwide. The album also reached number 3 on the US Billboard album charts and had 4 top ten singles, with one of them reaching number 1. INXS was led by one of the most charismatic frontman of the 1980's, Michael Hutchence. Whose voice, style and sexiness was made for MTV and the 1980's. The band features three of the Farriss brothers, Andrew on keyboards and guitar, Jon on drums and Tim on guitars along with Kirk Pengilly on guitars and sax and Garry Gary Beers on bass. The album was produced by Chris Thomas. Kick featured undeniable hits made for the 1980's radio and MTV like, New Sensation, Devil Inside, Never Tear Us Apart and the number one hit, Need You Tonight. The album and tour made INXS and Michael Hutchence darlings of the era. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 44 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Zeus' pick. The vacationing Kornflake is flopped on a hammock somewhere, but the Mayor of Chickentown is here to celebrate the year 1988. After a quick look at some of the year's least popular movies (Kevin and the Mayor each saw just one of them), we turn to music. Specifically we're looking at the 1988 concert schedule at Great Woods, a beloved outdoor venue that dominated southern New England's summer concert landscape back in the day. The 1988 lineup at Great Woods featured classic rock (here comes Jethro Tull with that crazy flute), hair metal (Def Leppard, Europe, and a blindingly white combo show with Whitesnake and Great White), new wave (we should not have missed Depeche Mode with OMD), and Top 40 (George Michael, Huey Lewis, and more). Guns 'n' Roses opened for Aerosmith. Roy Orbison opened for the Beach Boys. Santana and Herbie Hancock were part of something called "Jazz Explosion," which sounds absolutely terrifying. And Kevin went to Great Woods for the very first time that summer, to see an Australian band that found massive success in the 80s. (And we don't mean Air Supply, or Men at Work, or Midnight Oil. Keep guessing.) Also: Last week we forgot to mention a certain giant robot from 1987. We apologize to giant robots everywhere. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Flopcast on Facebook! INXS (a phonetic play on "in excess") were an Australian rock band, formed as the Farriss Brothers in 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales. The founding members were bassist Garry Gary Beers, main composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, drummer Jon Farriss, guitarist Tim Farriss, lead singer and main lyricist Michael Hutchence, and guitarist and saxophonist Kirk Pengilly. For 20 years, INXS was fronted by Hutchence, whose magnetic stage presence made him the focal point of the band. Initially known for their new wave/pop style, the band later developed a harder pub rock style that included funk and dance elements. In 1984, INXS had their first number-one hit in Australia with "Original Sin". The band achieved international success in the mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s with the hit albums Listen Like Thieves, Kick, and X, and the singles "What You Need", "Need You Tonight" (the band's only US number-one single), "Devil Inside", "Never Tear Us Apart", "Suicide Blonde" and "New Sensation". After Hutchence's death on 22 November 1997, INXS made appearances with several guest singers, and toured and recorded with Jon Stevens as lead singer, beginning in 2000. In 2005, members of INXS participated in Rock Star: INXS, a reality television series that culminated in the selection of Canadian J.D. Fortune as their new lead singer. Irish singer-songwriter Ciaran Gribbin replaced Fortune as lead singer in 2011. During a concert on 11 November 2012, INXS stated that the performance would be their last, although they did not announce the band's permanent retirement. INXS won six Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards, including three for "Best Group" in 1987, 1989 and 1992; the band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. INXS has sold over 70 million albums worldwide, making them one of Australia's highest selling music acts of all time.Complete setlist - 5/18/23Corey Hart - Never SurrenderCommentaryGenesis - Man On The CornerDon Henley - The Boys Of SummerTina Turner - We Don't Need Another Hero (Beyond Thunderdome)CommentaryINXS - The One Thing (extended)INXS - Don't ChangeCommentaryINXS - Here Comes IIINXS - Original Sin/commentaryINXS -What You NeedINXS - I Send A MessageINXS - To Look At YouCommentaryINXS - The Album "Kick" Side AGuns In The SkyNew SensationDevil InsideNeed You Tonight/MediateThe Loved OneCommentaryINXS - The Album "Kick" Side BWild LifeNever Tear Us ApartMystifyKickCalling All NationsTiny DaggersCommentaryINXS - Disappear INXS - Suicide BlondeRecorded live at the She Shack Studio on April 17th and 18th 2023.© Copyright Danny Diess

I dont want to give too much away, Jon and i had the most incredible and enjoyable chat, i hope you enjoy it as much as i did! Jon, thank you so much for taking the time from your busy schedule to talk to me! Many thanks to Paul Beard for introducing me to Jon, thanks to my good friend Steve Barney for introducing me to Paul and lastly, thank you to Richard Hughes from Keane for supplying me with a great question for Jon!

Being a parent is all about transitions. You become a master of one season of life and then it all changes and you need to adjust to the next. In this episode, Elizabeth talks with Julie Swafford about a parent's perspective during this college transition time. While this can be a sad time for parents, it is also a time filled with joy as you have set your child up for their future life. Tune in to hear about how to say goodbye to your child when setting up their dorm, how to have a positive mindset when you have an empty nest, and how to let your child choose the future that is right for them. Julie Swafford is a parent with one daughter in college and one on the way. She is also the client care coordinator at Elizabeth West Consulting (EWC). 3 ways to embrace your child's transition to college include:  Choice. Ultimately, your child needs to choose their college. As much as you might love one school for your child, they have to choose their own future. Empty nest. You need to feel the heaviness of your child leaving and this is normal. At the same time, shift your mindset and love who your child has become. Embrace the joy of having raised a successful young adult heading off into the world.  Less Contact. Don't be worried if you haven't heard from your child when they are in college.

Fresh off our Part One deep dive with Richard Lowenstein, we are excited to prove that the sequel sometimes can be better than the original. Somehow, we manage to recapture 1987 in all its glory, with further discussions about the Prague videos of “Never Tear Us Apart” and “Guns in the Sky”.   We explore his 2019 masterpiece “Mystify” documentary on Michael Hutchence and get a sense of the man as Richard reveals new anecdotes and stories of their time together. Additionally, Richard shares with us the sheer difficulty of putting the project together with band management regularly blocking needed music to augment the strict telling of the story.   With our much-loved patrons getting their questions answered, we are excited to close off this much-wanted discussion with a true “auteur” to the arts that is the great Richard Lowenstein.   The live auction is ready to view  https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/125420006726   * Watch Dogs in Space on https://youtu.be/IJyD9MD9DT4   * To become a Patron/subscriber check out our different levels and see which one suits you. https://patron.podbean.com/INXSAccessAllAreas   * or donate https://paypal.me/INXSAAA?country.x=AU&locale.x=en_AU   * Please sign the petition at http://inductinxs.comto help get INXS nominated into the ROCK & ROLL HALL of FAME, where they belong.

With the final INXS track in Song Week upon us, we culminate with Never Tear Us Apart, a track that has grown from a beautiful ballad to truly iconic status. Ensuring a fourth consecutive top 10 from album KICK, Never Tear Us Apart is an alternative sounding Fats Domino-inspired waltz transformed into a beautiful, lush orchestral masterpiece.   Soaring the charts globally, this ballad never wastes a note, lyric, or moment, and still, 35 years later produces spine tingles and heart flutters. Whether it's Michael's evocative lyrics and vocals or the sublime instrumentation by the band, this song truly comes to life in the city of Prague with Richard Lowenstein's award-winning video.   Covered by numerous artists since its release including Joe Cocker, Tom Jones, Natalie Imbruglia, and The Teskey Brothers, N.T.U.A. has transcended its origins with it now being the match day theme song for Port Adelaide Football Club, Michael's funeral song, and the titular name of the band's award-winning miniseries in 2014.   So sit back, grab a Kleenex and open your heart to this beautiful song.   Love and peace. ✌️   Haydn     To become a Patron/ subscriber check out our different levels and see which one suits you.   https://patron.podbean.com/INXSAccessAllAreas     Please sign the petition at http://inductinxs.comto help get INXS nominated into the ROCK & ROLL HALL of FAME, where they belong.
