Derogation, the way in which striking doctors can be recalled to the ward to protect patient safety, was agreed by NHS England and the BMA. Now, new data The BMJ has uncovered shows that the mechanism was rarely used - and when it was tried, was often rejected. Gareth Iacobucci explains what that means about relations between the government, the NHS, and doctors. Felice Jacka, director of the Food & Mood Centre at Deakin University, is one of the authors of our recent ultra-processed foods umbrella review - and joins the podcast to talk about the link between diet and health; and why goverments need to pay more attention to the food system. Finally, John Appleby, senior associate at the Nuffield Trust, and Gillian Leng, dean and president elect of the Royal Society of medicine, have been thinking about healthcare funding, and how more stability is essential in securing the service's future. Hyperautomation and AIOps are two of the most important technologies that are driving the digital transformation of businesses across the globe. The business value of Hyperautomation and AIOps is significant. By automating repetitive tasks, hyperautomation helps businesses to save time and reduce costs, while also improving accuracy and efficiency. AIOps, on the other hand, helps businesses to monitor their IT infrastructure in real-time, detect and resolve issues faster, and optimize IT operations, which ultimately leads to better business outcomes. On this episode of the EM360 Podcast, Analyst Doug Laney is joined by John Appleby, CEO at Avantra, to discuss:AIOps as an enablerTangible returns on investmentFuture of SAP landscapes

Jon didn't think SAP TechEd put enough emphasis on DevOps and AIOps, so he set about to correct that, via a roundtable with John Appleby and Brenton O'Callahan of Avantra, and Martin Fischer of Neptune Software (Fischer is also the lead for DSAG's DevOps interest group). But is DevOps even relevant in an ERP context? And what about AIOps? How do we move beyond dashboards and observability? What do SAP customers need to move forward with effective automation? Has this issue been overlooked by SAP, and what kind of educational/project content is needed? What is the future of SAP Basis engineers in this context? Do they have one? Is DevSecOps even worth a mention? These are just some of the issues the guys get into during this "alternative SAP TechEd" session. Show notes: the company mentioned by Martin for the DevOps session at SAP TechEd is Nuve.

Hyperautomation is the business philosophy that the modern enterprise is using to rapidly automate SAP tasks and provide value back to the customer. A term coined by Gartner in 2019, hyperautomation and its rise are said to be indicative of how much RPA benefits businesses. John Appleby, CEO Avantra, managed to duck a podcast taping with me at SAP Sapphire. But after Appleby told me that this year's SAP Insider marked a change in SAP events, I put him in the podcast hot seat: what matters most to SAP customers? After our review of RISE with SAP, Appleby gives his answer: SAP automation. But hold up - automating SAP landscapes is different than classic DevOps. Can SAP Basis engineers make this transition, and have impact on their company's automation strategy? What are the pitfalls? I had some tough surprise questions ready for Appleby. I hope this practical look at why SAP automation is coming to a head will be useful to project teams. Disclosure: Avantra is a diginomica partner, but this podcast is not part our contract, nor is this a diginomica podcast. We did this one for fun, with only a bare bones list of topics, no script.

John is a self taught drummer who has mainly played with original bands here in Adelaide during his 54 year playing career. John joined his first band WOLFBAIN in 1968, in 1972 he joined BRONZE ELK who later became NEON WATERMELON which was the first Australian band to wear makeup. NEON WATERMELON became THE JOE HOOKER BAND, which was a very popular band during the 70s. In 1979 he joined SAFARI SET, and in 1980 PERFECT GAME, both bands regularly supported touring bands such as; MEN AT WORK, MIDNIGHT OIL, COLD CHISEL, JOE JOE ZEP AND THE FALCONS, and THE CLASH. Other bands that John has played with include: FLYTE, CHRIS FINNEN OFFERING, THE HOUNDS, LIMITED EDITION (Steve Foster), AUTO DE FE (Natasha Boyer), KASHMIR CHECK, SO WHAT/40 THOUSAND HORSEMAN, THE BACKBEATS, RUBY LANE, RUSSIAN CARAVAN, MAGELLAN, ROB BARTLETT, SCAFELL PIKE, CHRIS FINNEN'S 360 DEGREES, CRUISIN', THE LEGENDS, STEVE FOSTER (Duo), OCQ'S (Steve Foster), JBE, MY BROTHER JAKE, CHRIS FINNEN CLAN, and THE RODDY GORDON BAND. He joined SYMPATHY ORCHESTRA in 1999, and NUEMERIA ART COLLECTIVE in 2014, and is still playing with both bands. Music: "Band It About" theme song was written and recorded by Catherine Lambert & Michael Bryant. In this conversation, extracted from a much longer one between Andy Steer, CIO iTelligence UK, and John Appleby, CEO Avantra, the thorny topic of returning to a place of work is under debate. It provides valuable insights into the way some business leaders are thinking about a post-COVID-19 workplace.
We talk to long time collaborator John Appleby in his new role as CEO Avantra, a firm providing tools for SAP customers that aims to make their day to day lives easier. John is uniquely positioned to discuss SAP operations as one who grew up as a BASIS consultant, has worked in many areas of SAP apps and on the H|ANA system.
Singer / Songwriter Bryan John Appleby joins us for a conversation about unbelief and belief. He and Mike discuss how - rather than being an enemy of belief - unbelief can call out and question certain assumed tenets of belief and, in turn, allow belief to look at itself honestly and grow and evolve into new forms. Songs played in this order: The Silent Shepherd Noah's Nameless Wife … And the Revelation Sprout Praise the Void

What are the changes needed now to ensure the NHS is sustainable in the future? The NHS is facing one of the biggest crises in its history. With an ageing population, the increasing cost of drugs and treatments, and lack of funding for social care, the service is under more pressure than ever and the cracks are already starting to show. So will the system be able to cope in future as the UK's population gets older - and can the NHS survive?David Aaronovitch hears from expert witnesses including Dame Julie Moore, Chief Executive of University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and John Appleby, Chief Economist at the Nuffield Trust. Producer: China Collins.
The “gender pay gap” This topic has been in the news this week after the Institute for Fiscal Studies published research showing women end up 33% worse off than their male counterparts after they have children. But earlier in the summer, Fraser Nelson wrote in the Telegraph that the pay gap is “no longer an issue” for women born after 1975. Can both assessments be true? And could the label “gender pay gap” be hindering our understanding of what really lies behind the numbers? The cost of a hospital If a politician or commentator wants to underline just how wasteful a piece of expenditure is, a common strategy is to compare it to the number of hospitals you could build instead. Of course, hospitals are positive things – we all want more, right? But just how much is a hospital? Is it really a useful unit of measurement? We speak to health economist John Appleby. Corbyn Facts As Labour members begin voting on the party leadership, we investigate some of the claims made on the “Corbyn Facts” website set up by Jeremy Corbyn’s campaign. Did he really give 122 speeches on the EU referendum during the campaign? Were this year’s local election results as good as Labour’s best performance under Ed Miliband? We look at what the numbers tell us. Death Penalty abolition Statistics suggest that officially about half of the countries in the world have abolished Capital Punishment, and a further 52 have stopped its use in practice. But we tell the story behind the numbers and show why the picture is more complicated. We speak to Parvais Jabbar, co-director of the Death Penalty Project. The Holiday Desk of Good News This week we outline a handful of statistics to make everyone feel better about the UK and their holidays.

In this (very) informal discussion, John Appleby and Jon Reed reflect on their 30 minute blogger conversation with Bill McDermott on the future of SAP and the departure of Vishal Sikka. (Den Howlett blogged about the call, as did John). During the podcast, John and Jon pull out the main themes from the call, and look ahead to the challenges SAP must tackle at ASUG/Sapphire - including cloud, HANA, and the field issues customers are facing, which may not be solved via HANA or cloud talk.

In this very informal sit down, Jon and John talk about SAP HANA Insider Day 1, HANA's level of maturity, apps, and how John hacks through new SAP software. Different HANA use cases are covered, including those John sees in the field. There is some debate about BW on HANA as a starting point, and HANA as tech versus biz. Plus: John's selfie obsession.

Straight talk about HANA is hard to come by - but not with the group I pulled together for this international call. I have rarely looked forward to a call as much as this one, because I didn't know where the discussion would lead. I suspected we would have some significant points of debate and disagreement - I was not disappointed. During this 60 minute podcast, you'll hear SAP Mentors and bloggers Vijay Vijayasankar, John Appleby, and Vitality Rudnytskiy talk HANA as only they can.

It all started with a blog post. After TechEd 2010, SAP Mentor John Appleby of Bluefin Solutions posted a blog on his take on SAP mobility. Natascha Thomson of SAP read the blog and some of it didn't make sense to her. It was a clear case of buzzword alert! Seeking clear answers, Natascha and John asked me to referee a discussion between them on "FAQs on SAP Enterprise Mobility." During this thirty minute podcast, Natascha grills John on SAP Enterprise Mobility. Buzzwords are defined as we dig into everything from the impact of consumer technology to Project Gateway to the implications of HTML 5. Those listeners who make it towards the end of the podcast will be treated to some comic relief as once again a cellular caller (John) drops off a podcast on Enterprise Mobility, proving once and for all that "Always Connected" is a modern myth.
