Historian Codie Eash and Licensed Town Guide Rosanne Zajko join Matt and Six Question Lentz on the western slop of Seminary Ridge to discuss the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg with a focus on the action in and around the Lutheran Theological Seminary. This year, we've added a new element to all three of the battle anniversary episodes by including the civilian experience with a Licensed Town Guide.  From the Seminary Ridge Museum and Education Center Website: "The Battle of Gettysburg. The Cupola of the Seminary building is utilized as a lookout post by Brigadier General John Buford and his Signal Officer, Lt. Aaron Jerome. From the evening of July 1 to July 5, the building is in Confederate hands, but is occupied by hundreds of wounded United States soldiers. The U.S. Army retakes the building after the Confederate retreat and, until mid-September, the building is one of the largest field hospitals in Gettysburg. After the last patient leaves the building on September 16, classes begin within eight days." Be sure to visit their website, donate or become a member and definitely visit it when you come to Gettysburg. Make sure you get a cupola tour so you can yell down to the lawn: "There's a Devil to pay!" And, while you're here, hire a Licensed Town Guide who will share dozens of civilian stories that will most likely be new to you and will help you get a fuller picture of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Any time parents are concerned with their child's development or behavior or receive a special needs diagnosis, they are left with more questions than answers. Why isn't my child speaking? Or reading? Why are they hitting other kids? How do we get the help and services our child needs to succeed? How do we navigate the conversations this diagnosis will spark with our family, friends, school district and others? In this latest episode of Stepping Stones Museum for Children's “Under the Cupola” podcast, Star 99.9‘s Kevin Begley and Robert Townes, the museum's Director of Public Affairs, are joined by Eve Kessler and Janine Kelly, two local moms who found themselves in this exact scenario: When their children were diagnosed years ago, those answers were not always readily available and they felt alone in dealing with the important decisions that had to be made. Part of the series CAHIM Connecting Art Histories in the Museum, Anna McSweeney's book From Granada to Berlin: The Alhambra Cupola (Kettler Verlag, 2020) is the story of an extraordinary survivor from the Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain: the Alhambra cupola, now in the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin. The cupola, a ceiling crafted from carved and painted wood, was made to crown an exquisite mirador in one of the earliest palace buildings of the Alhambra. The book is the cupola's biography from its medieval construction to its imminent redisplay in Berlin. It traces the long history of the Alhambra through the prism of the cupola, from the Muslim craftsmen who built it, to its adaptation by the Christian conquerors after the fall of Granada in 1492, to its creation as a heritage site. The cupola was sketched by artists from across Europe before it was dismantled by a German financier and taken to Berlin in the 19th century. It witnessed the dramatic events of the 20th century in Germany and was eventually bought by the Museum in 1978. In recent decades, the new visibility of the cupola to the wider public has prompted questions about the object and its movement from Granada to Berlin. Its removal from the Alhambra and the complex reasons behind this loss is central to this biography. Setting the cupola within the wider context of Islamic heritage, it considers the role of collecting practices in the transformation of living monuments into heritage sites in the 20th century. This book presents a focused study of this unique object that cuts across academic disciplines and geographic boundaries to reveal a new perspective on the legacy of Islamic art in Europe and its continuing relevance today. A researcher with experience as an early childhood educator, Dr. Bailey is a co-developer of the evidence-based RULER approach to social and emotional learning.
