Chasing the ‘perfect’ diet is a trap; which is really great news for our brand. Simon Hill, nutritionist, physiotherapist, and host of The Proof podcast, joins us in the Academy of Imperfection to break down whether the latest dietary trends on social media actually match up with nutrition science. In this episode, Simon unpacks the role of both genetics and lifestyle choices in shaping our health, and specifically our risk of disease. Acknowledging the pressure, and sometimes shame, that comes with chasing the ‘perfect’ diet, Hugh, Ryan, and Josh discuss how to encourage kids to build positive relationships with food, and the incredible significance of ‘joy’ and ‘human connection’, that occurs when we get together to eat. And then, of course, we play Simon Says and bust some food-myths about supplements, plant protein, and whether breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Simon, thank you for all that you says. How much can a change in diet influence symptoms of mental health disorders? Why are a diversity of plants and whole foods so important to include, and ultra processed foods so important to remove? Why are inflammation and microbe diversity in the gut so key to this question? What does this research mean for the life-style medicine movement and to world food policy? In this episode we have the exploding new field of nutritional psychiatry to get to grips with, that is the way our diet can influence and even treat mental health conditions. We're going to be discussing the historical separation of mind and body by science, which has led to scepticism that diet could influence mental health outcomes; the new understanding of the importance of diversity in our microbiome and inflammation to our mood and mental state; our main topic which is going to be the radical results of recent trials showing large changes in cognitive and mental health outcomes when diet is altered; we'll get into the foods that can bring about that change and why they work; and we're going to be getting into the reasons for the broken industrialised food environment that has contributed to the current mental health epidemic in the west.Fortunately, to understand this complex new field, our guest today is the very scientist that risked her reputation to conduct the first trials, facing considerable pushback, only to shift the consensus remarkably quickly with some top science, Felice Jacka. She is the Deakin University Distinguished Professor of Nutritional Psychiatry in Melbourne, the founder and director of the Food & Mood Centre, and of the International Society of Nutritional Psychiatry; She has been cited in over 100 institutional directives for food policy including the World Health Organization and UNICEF; and she is also the author of two books on this for the general public, the children's book “There's a Zoo in my Poo” and for adults “Brain Changer: How diet can save your mental health” which we'll be covering today. Her impact has been so high on public health that in 2021 she was awarded the Order of Australia for her services to nutritional psychiatry. What we discuss:00:00 Intro08:50 The historic separation between mental and physical health. 10:35 People with mental health die about 20 years earlier. 13:30 The connection between the immune system and mental health. 16:20 New microbiome & chronic inflammation research's influence on psychiatry. 20:00 Epigenetics, mitochondria (energy generation) & neurotransmitter influences. 21:15 Gut brain axis & oxidative stress response.33:30 The SMILES trial results and their integration into the consensus. 38:30 Using the Press to shorten the usual 20 year gap between results and policy change. 43:00 Industrialised food is the leading cause of chronic disease & biodiversity loss. 45:00 ‘We're not going to tell people what to eat': the food lobby's ‘nanny state' argument. 50:00 Soil depletion and the soil microbiome. 50:50 The life-style psychiatry movement: Diet, sleep and exercise. 01:05:30 Take out ultra-processed foods - even the nutritionally balanced ones. 01:12:30 Cognitive ability and memory reduced by processed foods. 01:14:45 Nutritional and energetic equivalent foods have totally different outcomes for the microbiome. 01:19:15 Put in a variety of plants - 30 a week. 01:20:20 The mediterranean diet. 01:24:50 Polyphenol science so far. 01:27:00 Emulsifiers and artificial sugars - the mucosal lining of the gut. 01:30:15 Fermented foods - the waste products of the bacteria are beneficial. In this episode, Dr. Emily Deans discusses the field of evolutionary psychiatry and its connection to mental health. Dr. Deans is a board certified psychiatrist and writes the blog Evolutionary Psychiatry, based on the observation that our brains are healthiest when we embrace a diet and lifestyle reflecting the conditions under which we humans evolved.  Dr. Deans has presented at the Ancestral Health Symposium in 2012 and 2018 on topics related to this theme. In this discussion, we dive into what some of the recent clinical studies are telling us about the connection between food and mood disorders conditions such as depression. In particular, she reviews studies showing anti-depressive effects of a Meditarrean diet with meat, and also omega-3 supplementation.  Dr. Deans emphasizes the importance of considering individual dietary needs and preferences when implementing diet interventions in psychiatric practice. She shares success stories of patients who have experienced improvements in mood through dietary changes, including ketogenic and low-carb diets. She also highlights the connection between glucose tolerance and violent behavior, and the importance of smoothing out blood sugar response by incorporating whole foods into the diet. Dr. Deans discusses the emerging recognition within the medical profession of food's impact on mental health. She shares her approach to helping patients reduce or come off psychiatric medications, emphasizing the importance of a multifactorial approach that includes diet, exercise, and psychotherapy. Dr. Deans also discusses the potential risks and benefits of dietary changes for individuals with eating disorders. Resources:* Blog:  Evolutionary Psychology, at Psychology Today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/evolutionary-psychiatry* Studies:* Smiles Trial (Felice Jacka et al):  https://foodandmoodcentre.com.au/smiles-trial/* ISNPR position statement on nutrition and psychiatry: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4592666/* ISNPR guidelines on the use of omega 3 fatty acids in the treatment of major depressive disorder: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31480057/* Mediterranean diet and older adults and depression over time: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4454450/* Ketogenic diet and mood and anxiety disorders:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10134254/* Microbiome and depression in mice (and cannabinoids!): https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-19931-2Here is a guide to topics discussed in this podcast episode:Time     Topic01:30      Introduction to Evolutionary Psychiatry and Nutritional Psychology04:32      Dr. Deans' interest in the connection between diet and mental health08:00      The evidence from observational and randomized controlled studies12:00      Felice Jacka's Smiles trial:  Adding meat to diet reduced depression19:03      Effects of single nutrients on mental health20:10      Anti-depressive benefits of omega-3 fatty acids22:22      Mental health in pre-modern populations26:43      Impact of sugar and processed carbohydrates on mood28:22      Physiological mechanisms: inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction34:37      Using diet as a tool in clinical psychiatric practice43:20      Success stories: dietary reversal of psychosis and bipolar disorder49:12      Ketogenic and "Slow-Carb" diets for control of anxiety and panic attacks51:05      Violent behavior and poor glucose tolerance53:00      The bidirectional relationship between physical and mental health53:33      Medical profession's belated acceptance of the food-mood connection55:58      Helping patients reduce or come off of psychiatric medications58:07      Successes in reducing or stopping medications58:28      Dietary changes and eating disorders1:01:10   Current work and future plans Get full access to Ancestral Health Today Substack at ancestralhealth.substack.com/subscribe

Professor Felice Jacka's love of food led her to question whether what we put in our mouths everyday affects more than our waistline. Felice set out on a journey of discovery to change the status quo and uncover the truth through rigorous science. “Half of all mental disorders start before the age of 14, you want to get in and prevent them before they start and that means making sure that kids are getting the right nutrition and physical activity and obviously when they get into adolescence not smoking.” Dr. Felice Jacka, Director of The Food and Mood Center and founder and president of the International Society for Nutritional Psychiatry Research has dedicated her career researching nutritional psychiatry as well creating programs to mobilize change in our food environment. One of her many goals is to teach the role that lifestyle medicine can play in preventing mental health disorders. With a strong statistics background Dr. Jacka understands how important the role of quality research; intervention studies and meta analysis; will be in influencing change in the clinical practice setting and was part of one of the first studies looking at dietary intervention and depressive symptoms. “What gets me out of bed in the morning and keeps me doing this with such passion and zeal is the need to address the food environment and the fury I feel that big business has been allowed to sacrifice the health of the people and the planet right across the globe in the pursuit of profits, unimpeded” In our discussion we cover so many interesting areas: Treatment guidelines for mental health disorders: early focus lifestyle medicine Nutrition education for physicians Gut microbiota and its relationship to our mental health. Gut health: why variety of foods matters Setting up a healthy food environment for your kids with specific practical examples! The SMILES trial: A Randomized controlled trial of dietary improvement for adults with major depression: results and insights Obesity: changing our stereotypes about weight and mental health disorders The food environment and food policy Dealing with adversity and imperfect progress in life - so much wisdom here from an incredibly strong and resilient woman. BREATHE M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community   Power Quotes From The Show   Autumn's Three Foundational Health Steps "There are three foundational steps that I like to teach people to help heal their gut and brain when inflammation is present. Find the inflammation, make sure that your nutrient bases are covered, stabilize your blood sugar, and on top of all of that, get some tests done. It's about finding your specific imbalances and then getting the assistance to make some real positive life changes." - Autumn Smith   Creating Discussions Around Nutrient Deficiencies "Many of us are facing nutrient deficiencies and we're not talking enough about what we should be eating. We're all talking about eliminating gluten, soy, dairy, and whatever else and that is great and can be very empowering for a lot of people. However, the bigger picture that we all miss is, 'What are we eating?' and 'Is this enough to sustain us?' because we need to think about how to aid our brain chemicals. That protein you eat is becoming your neurotransmitters. So, if we're not getting enough protein or if the body is unable to digest it, then it will manifest into nutrient deficiencies." - Autumn Smith     The Golden Ticket To Your Perfect Diet "What it all comes down to in creating the perfect diet for you is listening to your intuition and your body because you are the only person who can design it. Don't eat something just because an expert tells you to if you don't like that food. Also if something is working for you today it might not necessarily work for you tomorrow or in the next season. We have to eat in tune with our environment and our life circumstances. There will be times where you experience seasons of nourishment that you need to move through, question, stay aware, and know that your body is going to give you the feedback that you need unless your metabolism has been hijacked with really, really processed foods. Once you tune in and heal what needs your attention, that's going to be your golden ticket to the perfect diet." - Autumn Smith     Links From Today's Show  Autumn Smith WFR 135 Autumn Smith Wild Pastures ‎Optimize Paleo Podcast by Paleovalley The #1 Nutrient to Boost Your Mental Health 345 Dr. Zach Bush Gluten Triggers Strange Delusions in Woman with Celiac Disease The Baffling Connection Between Vegetarianism and Depression Julia Ross' Cures Felice Jacka Junk Food May Increase Depression Risk Healthy Eating for Growing Bodies & Minds EP211: Getting Kids to Care About Healthy Food (& Eat It Too) with Katie Kimball Greens Every Day Keeps Your Brain 11 Years Younger 341 Josh Clemente  103 Robb Wolf 275 Paul Chek  The End of Alzheimer's: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline by Dale Bredesen Cronometer 252 Harpreet Rai Trace Elements Morley Robbins aka Magnesium Man Michael Pollan 311 Mark Wolynn Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes BREATHE M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Paleovalley Facebook Instagram   About Autumn Smith Autumn Smith has been a health enthusiast her entire life. That Healing Feeling

I had a super insightful conversation with my lovely friend Annabel this week all about eating mindfully and healing holistically. The topic of health often becomes intertwined with toxic diet culture and a negative 'envisioned' body image, when we should be focusing on eating to nourish our bodies, and exercising to feel strong and positive. Annabel loves studying nutrition, and learning how feeding our gut wholesome nutrients directly influences our mentality. We also discuss the importance of making plant based eating more accessible and enjoyable so that an increased population can experience the wide ranging physical benefits, as well as contributing to collectively aiding our planetary health. Annabel reacted particularly badly to glandular fever during her gap year, and this inspired a deeper interest in health and wellness, as well as an investigation into holistic therapies, including; craneosacral therapy, reflexology and kinesiology. We finish the episode by discussing the importance of making sustainable lifestyle changes to allow healthy habits to remain truly present for the rest of our lives. We really hope you enjoy!Mentioned:Couch to 5km: https://www.c25kfree.comDeliciously Ella: https://deliciouslyella.comHow to Fail with Elizabeth Day: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/how-to-fail-with-elizabeth-day/id1407451189How to Fail with Elizabeth Day - Deliciously Ella Episode is Season 7 - BONUS EPISODE.How Not to Die by Michael Greger.Brain Changer: How Diet Can Save Your Mental Health by Felice Jacka.Follow my Journey: https://www.instagram.com/healingwithtorzi/Follow Annabel: https://www.instagram.com/foodieannabel/*This episode was recorded remotely, so I apologise for any audio issues!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/that-healing-feeling. A thought-provoking discussion with Prof Felice Jacka, author of Brain Changer: The latest cutting edge science on how diet can affect your risk of anxiety and depression, and influence the health of your brain. We also talk about mental health-related diet and lifestyle tips, the gut microbiome and fermented foods to improve mental health and so much more.     Bio:    Professor Felice Jacka is Director of the Food & Mood Centre at Deakin University in Australia, founder and president of the International Society for Nutritional Psychiatry Research, and immediate past-president of the Australian Alliance for the Prevention of Mental Disorders. She holds Honorary Principal Research Fellow appointments at the Centre for Adolescent Health, Murdoch Children's Research Centre, and the Black Dog Institute. Professor Jacka's current research focuses closely on the links between diet, gut health and mental and brain health.   You feel how you eat.   Professor Felice Jacka's love of food led her to question whether what we put in our mouths every day affects more than our waistline. Felice set out on a journey of discovery to change the status quo and uncover the truth through rigorous science. Beginning her PhD in 2005, she examined the association between women's diets and their mental health, focusing on depression and anxiety.   What Felice found fundamentally changes the way we think about mental and brain health, and the importance of the nutrition-mental health link.   Her book, Brain Changer explains how and why we should consider our food as the basis of our mental and brain health throughout our lives. It includes a selection of recipes featuring ingredients beneficial to mental health. It also highlights the practical things we can do to help prevent mental health problems in the first place and offers strategies for treating these problems if they do arise.     This is not a diet book to help you on the weight scales. This is a guide to good habits to save your brain, improve the lives of future generations, and to optimise your mental and brain health at every stage of life.   Topics discussed:   Prof Jacka’s mental health challenge The link between nutrition and common mental disorders Pyscho- immunology Neuroscience Hippocampus, Mental Health and Diet Quality of Diet and Mood A review of epidemiological studies around the world Early life nutrition and emotional health Diet: a leading cause of premature death in men Mental Disorders: Leading societal disability burden Depression response to medication and treatment Diet and reduced risk of depression Diet quality and hippocampal volume Randomised Control Trial and Intervention Study Challenges The Smiles Trial Challenges Social and Dietary Support for Depression The Smiles Trial Results- First step to Nutritional Psychiatry https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30591059 Cost-saving of treating depression with diet Diet, exercise and giving up smoking International guideline for lifestyle psychiatry Dietary strategies to improve mental health Vegetable diversity and fibre Olive oil and Fish The problem of Ultra-processed foods Gut and Brain Health Sleep Quality and Mental health Obesity and mental health Adoption by the medical community What is step Zero in Nutritional psychiatry? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31480057 The influence of “Big Food" Risk factors and lower lifespan of people with major psychotic disorders Other risk facts impact depressed cohort “Lifestyle medicine" Preventing depression in kids Creating the right environment through policy Food marketing and Big Food Protecting the health of our children: mental and cognitive Felice’s depression and anxiety disorder The impact of exercise on sleep and mental health The flow-on effect of improving diet Cooking and preparing food Professor Ted Dinan podcast- experts on Gut-Brain Axis https://podcast.nourishmeorganics.com.au/professor-ted-dinan-on-the-psychobiotic-revolution-mood-food-and-the-new-science-of-the-gut-brain-connection Modulating the Gut Microbiome for Mental Health Diet - a key driver of gut microbiota composition The significance of plant foods for gut microbiota modulation Your gut needs a diversity of fibre, polyphenols and good fats “ Eat real food, not too much, mostly plants" Short-chain fatty acids, fibre, the immune system, G-protein coupled receptors and epigenetic activation https://www.nature.com/scitable/topicpage/gpcr-14047471/ Gut Microbiome diversity and mucin degrading bacteria Loss of microbiome species and associated risks Neurotransmitters and the microbiome Tryptophan, GABA and serotonin Milk Kefir and GABA Fermented Foods and Metabolites The impact of fermented foods RCTs on fermented foods as a treatment for anxiety and depression Functional Peptides and Kefir Fermented Food and Mental health Study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30415609 Book: Brain Changer: The latest cutting edge science on how diet can affect your risk of anxiety and depression, and influence the health of your brain https://www.nourishmeorganics.com.au/products/brain-changer-the-good-mental-health-diet-by-prof-felice-jacka Felice’s top tip for gut health and mental health   Brought to you by:   Nourishme Organics- The Gut Health Superstore   Milk kefir is an amazing fermented food that may improve mental health. We all know that a poor diet negatively impacts our physical health. In fact, it is now the leading cause of early death in men and number two in women. But it’s not only our physical health that is affected – the effects on our mental health can also be devastating. This week, I am joined by world leading expert in the field of nutritional psychiatry, Professor Felice Jacka, to discuss her ground-breaking research into the link between food and our mental health. We discuss why lifestyle medicine should be the starting point for many mental health conditions and why there is an urgent need to train medical practitioners to give such lifestyle advice. We delve into the important role the gut microbiome plays in this area and how a diet rich in diversity is key. We also talk about the link between a mother’s diet in pregnancy and their child’s emotional health. At a time where the modern food environment is so broken and depression and anxiety are on the rise, this conversation is more important than ever. It really is a fascinating listen – I hope you enjoy it!Show notes available at https://drchatterjee.com/brainchangerFollow me on instagram.com/drchatterjee/Follow me on facebook.com/DrChatterjee/Follow me on twitter.com/drchatterjeeukDISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
