The cargo shipping industry is vital to the sustenance of the modern world. However, the millions of mariners who make the system possible often go unnoticed by the masses. For nearly 200 years, The Seamen's Church Institute has worked hard to ensure that seafarers do not feel invisible. Matthew Peterson speaks with members of the organization to understand how they serve mariners and why the work is so important to them.

ONE GRAY OCTOBER day in 1898, three British ship captains were sitting in the parlor of the Seamen's Rest, a sort of YMCA for sailors located in the bustling port of Tacoma. They were in a betting mood. One of them, although he didn't know it, was gambling with his life. All three skippers captained full-rigged windjammers. They were H.A. Lever of the Imerhorne; David Thompson of the Earl of Dalhousie; and Charles McBride of the 265-foot clipper Atalanta. Atalanta, you may recall, was the virgin-huntress character in Greek mythology who challenged all her suitors to bet their lives on a footrace against her. If they won, they got to marry her; if they lost, they were put to death. And, until Hippomenes came along and cheated by throwing golden apples, she won, and they died, every time. The Atalanta was named after her in a reference to its great speed; she was one of the fastest sailing ships in the world. But, before too long, the name would seem appropriate in other ways as well. ... (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/1905a.shipwreck-atalanta-wager-gone-wrong-546.html)

Happy Spooky Wednesday, everyone! We've covered a lot of water cryptids in the past, but never one we've given a new name. It's time to talk about Glossy. This is the Gloucester Sea Serpent, reportedly seen off the coast of the Cape Ann area in Massachusetts. Seamen started reporting their sightings in the 1800s, and the most recent sighting was as recent as 1980! It's one of the most well-documented sea cryptids in history, so why hasn't it been as well-reported as popular creatures like Nessie or Champ? Because it doesn't have a catchy name! JUSTICE FOR GLOSSY!

The ‘Quietly Confident Quartet' of Mark Tonelli (backstroke), Peter Evans (breaststroke), Mark Kerry (butterfly), and Neil Brooks (freestyle) won Gold in the 4 × 100 metres medley relay at the Summer Olympics in Moscow on 24th July, 1980: the only time the United States had not won the event. It was Australia's first Gold medal for eight years, but reaction back home to the swimmers' astonishing victory was mixed, because some of their countrymen - including the Australian government - believed the team, like the USA, should have boycotted the games due to Russia's invasion of Afghanistan. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly debate whether their triumph was one of determination or youthful confidence; explain why the Seamen's Union Of Australia played a pivotal role in getting them to Moscow; and investigate the Soviets' claims to have run ‘the cleanest Games on record'… Further Reading: • Mark Tonelli Relives Legendary Commentator Norman May's famous Moscow call: “Gold…Gold to Australia…Gold.!!” (Swimming World, 2020): https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/mark-tonelli-relives-legendary-commentator-norman-mays-famous-moscow-call-goldgold-to-australiagold/ • ‘The 1980 Olympics Are The 'Cleanest' In History. Love it? Have a question or comment? Click here to send me a direct message! SummaryIn EP14 - We are going to dive into The Forgotten Chinese Seamen of Liverpool. During World War II, thousands of Chinese sailors served in Britain's merchant navy, keeping vital supply routes open. Many settled in Liverpool, starting families and becoming part of the city's fabric. But after the war, the British government saw them as expendable. In a secret policy, at least 2,300 Chinese seamen were forcibly deported between 1946 and 1949—many without warning. Their wives and children were left behind, never knowing the truth. For decades, this story remained buried. For decades, their families believed they had been abandoned. The truth? They were erased. KungFu Podcasts | Explore the Culture, Adventure and Impact of Martial Arts
Getting through the Fog of Chaos in 4 steps is a Podcast that resonated with me as a Maritime Meditation long ago. It is the narrative story of facts how SeaMen navigated the sea's before 1100 AD. The magnet compass was created in 206 BC, but not implemented into sea navigation until 1107 AD. KungFu was practiced upon ship decks, particularly in Southern China. With visibility less than 100 yards, knowing how to survive when you were lost at sea wasn't just theory. I will share the stories and point out questions to ask and to avoid asking until later. Also I will share with you what real illusions that you must be aware of when you get lost in a fog at sea. You can find more content and information at twsmith.us/meettim

But just as they're finishing up their game, the kids are suddenly confronted with real-life horror and must find a way to channel the courage of their characters or risk a true Total Party Kill.

Sea Daddies! Sea Queens! Land hoes! This week, we're getting wet and wild with Dr. Seth LeJacq to learn what life was like for queer sailors in the British navy from the 15th century to the 19th century. How did these sailors express their gender and sexuality? What did they risk—legally and socially—when they pursued queer relationships? And were their ship hammocks really sturdy enough for a night of deep sea “exploration”? Dr. Seth Stein LeJacq is a historian specializing in the history of gender, sexuality, and medicine. He is currently a Caird Fellow at the UK National Maritime Museum. You can follow Dr. LeJacq on Twitter @SethSLeJacq, and learn more about his work at sethlejacq.com.
