Her husband, Sir Robert Harley, had been in London since the start of the civil war. With six hundred soldiers marching against her and only fifty men fighting on her side, she had to decide whether to resist or surrender. Is the way we have seen, trained, and determined someone to be spiritual derived from Scripture or from mysticism? A lot of the popular examples of someone being spirit filled points us to people who have extraordinary experiences and witness supernatural signs and wonders. These are a sign that one has a deep relationship with God. And that relationship developed with continued personal supernatural experiences. These are the starting points to the relationship and are continually sought after to maintain or develop that relationship. These personal experiences are how people gauge they are intimate with God or, as people also say spiritual/spirit filled and led (aka are spiritual). But what does Scripture say about spirituality? In today's conversation, we received wisdom and insight from Dr. Steve Porter about all things spiritual formation and transformation – in personal, pastoral and church contexts. Steve's work at the intersection of philosophy, theology and psychology means that he brings multilayered insight into the conversation around growth and transformation. Shaped and informed by the spirituality of Paul and the insight of folks like Dallas Willard and Eugene Peterson, Steve reminds us of the spiritual realities available to us as persons in Christ. He encourages us to be aware of God's presence, engaging in spiritual practices as windows that open ourselves to God. He also shares how we can internalize the love of God and how we as the church can support one another in making the invisible love of God visible and tangible, especially if we have struggled to experience that love in human relationships. We're excited that Steve will be joining us at Regent in the summer to teach a class on Cultivating Formation-Minded Pastors and Churches (July 21-25). We'd love for you to join us!BioDr. Steven L. Porter is the Senior Research Fellow and Executive Director of the Martin Institute for Christianity and Culture at Westmont College. He is also an affiliate professor of theology and spiritual formation at Biola University's Institute for Spiritual Formation and Rosemead School of Psychology. Dr. Porter earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Southern California under the mentorship of Dallas Willard and holds an M.Phil. in philosophical theology from the University of Oxford. His academic work focuses on Christian spiritual formation, the doctrine of sanctification, and the integration of psychology and theology. Additionally, he serves as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care.Publications ReferencedSteven L. Drawn from EWTN's “Biblical Spirituality,” Fr. Joseph Wolfe's book captures Mother Angelica's down-to-earth reflections and grassroots perspective on the wonder of God's creation.
After two nights of lectures on “Biblical Spirituality” drawn from the first Chapter of the Epistle of James, during the 2023 Church Development Conference at New Covenant With Harmony Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Stubblefield concludes with a sermon on verses 2 – 4 of that chapter. Despite what they were going through, and the difficulties they were facing, James, a prominent leader in the early church and the half-brother of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, encouraged his audience to exercise a “calculated joy”. Dr. Stubblefield shares, in this compelling and memorable message, what that means!

"Whoever does not seek the Cross of Christ does not seek the glory of Christ." -St. John of the Cross
We see a three-fold structure of the Christian spiritual life. 1) God so loved the world that He gave his only son2) So that whoever believes in Him3) May not perish but have eternal lifeOr the same thing but looked through the model disciple, Mary:1) The invitation of the Holy Spirit's overshadowing2) The acceptance in faith (Be it done to me according to thy word)3) The Word became fleshIn simple terms:1) God's love invites2) We accept in faith3) God brings about his fruitOur role is to accept in faith with DESIRE!!!! A desire that seeks to imitate the Lord, and this imitation requires us to study who He is and what He teaches.
In this episode, I talk with Dustin Benge about how Christians can utilize social media in a God-honoring way, not get sucked into the outrage mob, and operate online with integrity. Believers often decry social media as a waste of time, but in just a few short years Dustin has accrued over 75,000 followers on Twitter by just following the strategy of simply "posting truth." Dustin shares valuable insights into how he thinks about his social media presence as an extension of his ministry and a stewardship from God. Dustin is the author of The Loveliest Place: The Beauty and Glory of the Church. He is also the Biblical Spirituality & Historical Theology Professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary where he also serves as the Vice President of Communications.
