Galatians 5:22-23 ESV22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. • • •Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. • • •Matthew 19:16-22 ESV16 And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” 17 And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19 Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 20 The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. • • •1. Goodness Defined—Rom. 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.—Acts 10:38 “...how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.—Greek word - agathosune meaning to be ‘upright or positive moral qualities of the most general nature.' Goodness implies some type of activity involving others, ‘to be good to' or ‘to benefit.'In this point to mean generosity and to act of generous giving.—Isaiah 63:7 I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord, the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord has granted us, and the great goodness to the house of Israel that he has granted them according to his compassion, according to the abundance of his steadfast love.—Gal. 6:9-10 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.—Kindness and goodness - going hand-in-hand throughout Scripture. Kindness is a sincere desire for the happiness of others; goodness is the activity calculated to advance that happiness. Goodness is kindness in action.—Good Samaritan story (all were showing kindness, only one showed goodness)—Umbrella term: God's love, mercy, longsuffering, lovingkindness=all manifestations of his goodness. ‘It is the absence of any imperfection or defect, and the presence of perfect holiness.' Does not stay with God, but is poured out in tangible ways. (The Character of Christ –Cruse) • • •2. The Only One Who is Good—Jesus said “Why do you ask me what is good?” Matt. 19:17—Found in the very heart and essence of God: Charnock - This is the true and genuine character of God. He is good, he is goodness, good in himself, good in his essence, good in the highest degree, possessing whatever is comely, excellent, desirable; the highest good, because the first good…All the names of God are comprehended in this one good.—Ps. 143:10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!—Songs we sing and associate with God's goodness: “Good, good Father, Goodness of God, King of my Heart,—Creation story - God saw that it was all good each day; when got to humankind, it was very good.—Providence - Matt. 7:11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!—We ask Jesus what is good, because he is the provider of good things: that breath you took, today [the day of salvation] and our response should be thanksgiving.—Jesus - He Obeys, submits, serves, fulfills Gods law.—Quote by Thomas Brooks, “Christ is the greatest good, the choicest good, the chiefest good, the most suitable good, the most necessary good. He is a pure good, a real good, a total good, an eternal good, and a soul-satisfying good.” • • •3. Goodness is Kindness in Action—Keep the commandments - Rich ruler was to submit and fulfill law (Matt. 19:17)—“Commandments Jesus gave example of were about others (#5–#10)—Goodness is full of kindness/compassion: via Pastor Trinity - Compassion is love in action. Compassion moves us in our depths or inner being to respond to the needs around us.—One commentator says, “True goodness is not merely impulsive, but rational and considerate–it will therefore pause, and be at some trouble to inquire what service, and how best may it be rendered…Goodness should be willing to give time, and thought, and patience, and even labor; not mere money and kind words and compassionate looks.”—Rich ruler thought he put in effort to be good, even asking of Jesus, but was impulsive and did not want to live out kindness.—Follow up on Good Samaritan—Goodness as a redemptive work: Need to look towards redemption.—Rom. 5:8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. • • •4. “Lord what would you have me do?”—Rich ruler left sad; Our conflict: its hard to love God and others.—Our salvation hinges on the fact that Jesus Christ, in perfect goodness, fulfilled these two great commandments.—Limitation to our threshold (Jesus was the cross)—Professor who wanted to give everybody 95% on final test but had to be unanimous. Out of 300 students 20 said ‘no' Professor asked for reasons and almost all 20 stated that they didn't want others to get the good grade bc they didn't earn/they wanted to competitively be better.”—Eph. 2:8-10 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.—God has prepared good works for each of us, consistent with our gifts and circumstances. We should pray “Lord, what will you have me do?” and then we should do it.—Our nature changes gives us capacity to be good; We all have weak moments - the goal is not to try and do more, but believe more; to abide in Christ.—3 john 11 Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God.—Jesus and Simon Peter - John 21; Be good because I am good • • •Application:Doing good with jobDoing good with familyDoing good to all people ‘God's goodness, combined with his love of righteousness, moves him to make sinners happy by making them holy.”

In this series, so far we've explored the interconnected pillars of flourishing: justice, mercy, and humility. Today, we turn our attention to the critical role of personal piety—of walking humbly before God and standing firm in spiritual warfare. To guide us, we'll draw inspiration from Isaiah 61 and the life and teachings of the great Puritan preacher Thomas Brooks. What started out as a four part series has turned into a vibrant series that will run every Monday and Thursday in January. As you listen to each episode, you immediately recognize that God's flourishing bears no resemblance to the attributes the world promotes as avenues to flourishing. We are by nature grumblers and malcontents. We take offence easily, and become critical when our desires and expectations are disappointed. Paul Levy, in this week's main article, helps us to see that these tendencies aren't mere quirks, or 'weaknesses', but sins of great consequence in the church of God. Moreover, they are sins to which we are often tempted at times of great growth and kingdom advance. Through a discussion of the beginning of Acts 6, he helps us see how this dynamic was negotiated by the apostles, and how we can take evasive action against it today. He writes at https://ealinglevy.wordpress.com/ Thomas Brooks was a Puritan gospel minister. The scant amount of information known about him comes largely from his writing. Born in 1608, he entered Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1625. He spent several years at sea, perhaps as chaplain, and was licensed as a preacher by 1640. After England's Civil War, Brooks served as pastor of London's Thomas Apostle; in 1648, he preached before the House of Commons. He later became the subject of controversy when he refused baptism and the Lord's Supper to people that weren't walking faithfully with the Lord. Thomas Brooks books include a six-volume set titled The Works of Thomas Brooks, with each book also available individually. Other books include Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices (written to help people resist Satan's seductive power), The Secret Key to Heaven ( which emphasizes the importance of private prayer) and Heaven on Earth, which reminds people there is no greater privilege than to be a child of God. Satan's first trick to lure people into sin is to show them the bait while hiding the hook; to offer the golden cup but conceal the poison inside; to highlight the sweetness, pleasure, and benefits of giving in to sin, while hiding the inevitable suffering and misery that follow. This is how he deceived the first humans. The serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. God knows that when you eat the fruit, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil” (Gen. 3:4-5). “You'll have your eyes opened and become like gods!” That's the bait—the pleasure, the sweetness, the gain. But what he hides is the hook—the shame, the anger of God, and the loss that will come for sure. There are two ways our eyes can be opened: the mind can be opened to joy and contemplation, or the body to shame and confusion. Satan promises the first but delivers the second. He cheated Adam and Eve, offering them an apple in exchange for paradise, just like he continues to deceive countless people today. That's a paraphrase from Thomas Brooks
Conteúdo oferecido em parceria entre Truth For Life e Ministério Fiel.

Psalm 29:3–4 David repeatedly refers to the voice of the Lord in this psalm. On seven occasions he talks of the way in which God speaks powerfully through creation. He graphically describes the way in which God's power and majesty are displayed in thunder and lightning. He speaks of the way in which this power is so great that it shatters the cedars of Lebanon and even makes the wilderness shake. Many of the psalms are focused on the worship of God in the temple but this psalm encourages worshippers to go outside and recognise the awesome power of God in creation. This is a good challenge for all of us. It's so easy for us to allow our experience of God to be trapped by our personal walk with him or the life of our church. Both of those aspects of the Christian life are vital, but we should never neglect to look outside and see how powerful and majestic he is. We all need to take time to look at this amazing world and acknowledge that it is the work of our awesome Creator God. Thomas Brooks, the 17th-century preacher, expressed this well when he wrote: “What are the heavens, the earth, the sea, but a sheet of royal paper, written all over with the wisdom and love of God?” What I love about this question is that Brooks is encouraging us to expect God to speak to us from creation. I wonder how you will hear the voice of the Lord speaking to you today as you look at his creation. Question When do you hear God speaking to you most clearly from creation, and what have you heard him say? Prayer Creator God, I worship you for this amazing world that you have made. Forgive me that I have so often taken it for granted. Help me to listen more carefully for your voice in creation. Amen

Thomas Brooks, 1659, London. -I was silent- I would not open my mouth, for You are the one who has done this-- Psalm 39-9 The choicest saints are 'born to troubles as the sparks fly upwards', Job 5-7. 'Many are the afflictions of the righteous- but the Lord delivers him out of them all.' Psalm 34-19. If they were many, and not troubles, then, as it is in the proverb, the more the merrier- or if they were troubles and not many, then the fewer the better. But God, who is infinite in wisdom and matchless in goodness, has ordered troubles, yes, many troubles to come trooping in upon us on every side. As our mercies-so our crosses seldom come single- they usually come treading one upon the heels of another- they are like April showers, no sooner is one over but another comes. And yet, Christians, it is mercy, it is rich mercy, that every affliction is not an execution, that every correction is not a damnation. The higher the waters rise, the nearer Noah's ark was lifted up to heaven- the more your afflictions are increased, the more your heart shall be raised heavenward.

QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“Truth is now considered malleable, by opinion and by zero-sum endgames…. But the truth, the truth is sacred. Unalterable. Chiseled into the stone and the foundation of our republic.”~Tom Hanks at Harvard's Commencement (May 2023) “Christianity began not as an institution, not even as a creed, but first as an event…. [T]he gospel arrived in history as a kind of convulsive disruption of history….”~David Bentley Hart, philosopher and scholar “The commands of God must outweigh all authority and example of men.”~St. Jerome (d. 420 A.D.), scholar and theologian “There are no men on earth so soon entangled, and so easily conquered by error, as proud souls. Oh, it is dangerous to love to be wise….”~Thomas Brooks (1608-1680), English Puritan minister and author “The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what's behind him.”~G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936), English writer and literary critic “The same Bible that condemned me held in it the promises that could save me. I just had to believe it.”~Jackie Hill Perry, writer and hip-hop artist “God accepts my imperfect faith as perfect righteousness for Christ's sake….”~Martin Luther (1483-1546) in his Galatians Commentary “Without the Gospel, I am only projecting behavioral modification. Changes of the heart must trump mere change of behavior. Therefore, the goodness of God through the gospel must trump all other philosophies….” “The gospel is supposed to bring people together who wouldn't naturally be together.”~Eric Mason, Philadelphia-based pastorSERMON PASSAGEGalatians 2:1-10 (ESV)Galatians 1 11 For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man's gospel. 12 For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. 13 For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it. 14 And I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. 15 But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, 16 was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone; 17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and remained with him fifteen days. 19 But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother. 20 (In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not lie!) 21 Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. 22 And I was still unknown in person to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. 23 They only were hearing it said, “He who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.” 24 And they glorified God because of me.Galatians 21 Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. 2 I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain. 3 But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. 4 Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery— 5 to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. 6 And from those who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those, I say, who seemed influential added nothing to me. 7 On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised 8 (for he who worked through Peter for his apostolic ministry to the circumcised worked also through me for mine to the Gentiles), 9 and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. 10 Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.
