From Neighbors to Distillers: The Story Behind Oaklore Distilling Co. In this episode of the Whiskey Ring Podcast, I had the pleasure of chatting with Matt Simpkins and Tom Bogan, the co-founders of Oaklore Distilling in North Carolina. Their journey began as neighbors bonding over their shared passion for whiskey while walking their kids to the bus stop. What started as casual "Tuesday drinking" sessions evolved into a deep dive into the world of whiskey, leading them to create their own distillery with a mission to produce a whiskey they would want to drink themselves. We explored the challenges of operating in North Carolina, a control state with specific regulations (though with a very friendly town!), and how they navigated these hurdles while experimenting with different finishes and mash bills. Their commitment to using locally sourced grains is evident in their North Carolina Straight Rye Whiskey, which I greatly enjoyed as a mid-spice rye (70/20/10) that isn't to bourbon-y or to herby. The conversation also highlighted their collaborative spirit within the whiskey community, drawing inspiration from established distillers like the Nelson brothers and John Hargrove, who provided invaluable guidance during their startup phase. Towards the end of the episode, we delved into their finishing series, including offerings like port wine and honey finishes, which reflect their personal stories and relationships with wineries including San Sebastian, the port producer we recently mentioned in last week's St. Augustine Distillery epsiode. This episode is a fascinating look into Oaklore Distilling's creative process, the challenges of starting a distillery, and their dedication to producing high-quality whiskey that embodies their passion and the rich heritage of North Carolina. Marine parks are popular places to visit to learn more about sea creatures and explore the secrets of the sea. Their animal performances are always the biggest draw, giving visitors the illusion that humans live in harmony with other species. This book, Beneath the Surface: Killer Whales, SeaWorld, and the Truth Beyond Blackfish, tells us what’s actually happening to the captive killer whales at SeaWorld, revealing the inconvenient truth behind the marine park industry. While SeaWorld offers great fun for humans, it supports the confinement of sea animals, which is a tragic destiny.
SeaWorld is planning to open up again. But there's always good reason to not support the animal abusement park. Here's a reprise of part two of our conversation with John Hargrove, the heralded orca trainer who blew the whistle at SeaWorld, and then went on to turn his story into a New York Times best seller, "Beneath the Surface." In this podcast, Hargrove reveals how orca semen he collected may determine exactly how long SeaWorld stays in business. Hargrove begins by talking about how the documentary "Blackfish" changed his life. He talks about the frustration with how long SeaWorld has managed to stay operational. And he talks about how he deals with the guilt he still feels for the orcas who are still at SeaWorld. He says SeaWorld's future may be dependent on China and Russia, and the stash of orca semen he collected while leading the artificial insemination program at SeaWorld. To this day, Hargrove says, the semen remains unaccounted for. Hargrove's best-selling book has just been recently published in China for people there to understand what happens "Beneath the Surface." In this first of a two-part conversation, SeaWorld whistle blower John Hargrove, featured in the documentary, "Blackfish," and who told his story in his New York Times best seller "Beneath the Surface," reflects on how he became the moral voice for orcas in captivity. He discovered his passion on his first visit to SeaWorld in Florida, and it became the driving force in his life. He was one of the youngest trainers ever at SeaWorld and talks about how his relationships with the orcas developed into what he calls a genuine love. But then it soured when he was forced to artificially inseminate the orcas. It was the turning point for Hargrove, who decided it was time to tell the truth about SeaWorld and the deaths of fellow trainers at the hands of beautiful but dangerous animals. Be sure to listen to Part II, released March 11, 2020, when Hargrove talks about his frustration at SeaWorld's continuance, and how Hargrove may have helped them stay in business for some time when he collected a valuable stash of orca semen for SeaWorld that could keep a breeding operation alive for sometime. After forgiving millions of dollars in medical debt, Occupy Wall Street is tackling a new beast: student loans. Marking the third anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement, the group's Strike Debt initiative announced Wednesday it has abolished $3.8 million worth of private student loan debt since January. It said it has been buying the debts for pennies on the dollar from debt collectors, and then simply forgiving that money rather than trying to collect it. In total, the group spent a little more than $100,000 to purchase the $3.8 million in debt. http://money.cnn.com/2014/09/17/pf/college/occupy-wall-street-student-loan-debt/

Despite a rebound in the U.S. economy, many leisure companies have seen their share prices stay flat on a YTD basis, as higher gas prices and cold weather have prevented many from spending on discretionary items or vacations. SeaWorld Entertainment (SEAS) is truly having a year to forget, largely thanks to its most recent earnings report, and the impact of an ongoing public relations issue. In fact, the stock is down over 30% YTD, largely thanks to a recent earnings miss which sent shares of SEAS plunging to new depths in August trading. John Hargrove talks about his time at Sea World and about what he would like to see Sea World do and also his new book . http://finance.yahoo.com/news/bear-day-seaworld-entertainment-seas-050017174.html?.tsrc=applewf
