From Neighbors to Distillers: The Story Behind Oaklore Distilling Co. In this episode of the Whiskey Ring Podcast, I had the pleasure of chatting with Matt Simpkins and Tom Bogan, the co-founders of Oaklore Distilling in North Carolina. Their journey began as neighbors bonding over their shared passion for whiskey while walking their kids to the bus stop. What started as casual "Tuesday drinking" sessions evolved into a deep dive into the world of whiskey, leading them to create their own distillery with a mission to produce a whiskey they would want to drink themselves. We explored the challenges of operating in North Carolina, a control state with specific regulations (though with a very friendly town!), and how they navigated these hurdles while experimenting with different finishes and mash bills. Their commitment to using locally sourced grains is evident in their North Carolina Straight Rye Whiskey, which I greatly enjoyed as a mid-spice rye (70/20/10) that isn't to bourbon-y or to herby. The conversation also highlighted their collaborative spirit within the whiskey community, drawing inspiration from established distillers like the Nelson brothers and John Hargrove, who provided invaluable guidance during their startup phase. Towards the end of the episode, we delved into their finishing series, including offerings like port wine and honey finishes, which reflect their personal stories and relationships with wineries including San Sebastian, the port producer we recently mentioned in last week's St. Augustine Distillery epsiode. This episode is a fascinating look into Oaklore Distilling's creative process, the challenges of starting a distillery, and their dedication to producing high-quality whiskey that embodies their passion and the rich heritage of North Carolina. David Simpkins, Director of Technology at Polygon, delves into the world of construction heating and moisture control solutions in a recent presentation from their North Andover office near Boston. Simpkins introduces three varied heat options that cater to the diverse demands of construction sites, ensuring an optimal climate for efficient operations. The Spectrum of Heaters Simpkins unveils a direct-fired 2.5 million BTU heater, suitable for applications that can manage 100% outside air. However, this powerful unit sacrifices recirculation for effective ventilation, resulting in higher energy costs and combustion products in the airstream. On the other hand, a 150 kW electric heater enables air recirculation either inside the space or adjacent to the building, trading a lesser half a million BTUs for cleaner ventilation. Two versions of the million BTU indirect-fired heaters introduce the option of mixed air – recirculating the inside air while simultaneously drawing in outside air. Energy Efficiency and Controlled Environments These indirect-fired units, functioning like a furnace that secludes the combustion products from the air, present a more energy-efficient option. Moreover, these heaters also provide the prospect of adding desiccant dehumidification, allowing independent control of temperature and humidity. Simpkins highlights how this feature is crucial for certain construction processes that require precise environmental conditions, like drywall drying and millwork installation. Match the Heater to the Project To close out, Simpkins ensures that Polygon's dedicated business development team is always eager to assist in selecting the best-suited equipment from their extensive range for any project. Experience the difference with Polygon's advanced construction heating solutions, effortlessly managing moisture and temperature in your construction environment for optimal results.

Arthur Lee Simpkins was an African-American singer with a unique talent. He was born in South Carolina in 1907, where he became known as the "Black Caruso" in reference to the legendary opera singer Enrico Caruso. In 1936, Simpkins recorded a hit version of "Sing, Sing, Sing" with Fletcher Henderson and His Orchestra. That record jump started Simpkins career, allowing him to perform a wide variety of music ranging from classic standards to operatic renditions, and not just different genres, but in many different languages and dialects. Simpkins performed on television regularly during the medium's early days, and also appeared in movies, like the film Why Men Leave Home in 1951. He was last remembered for singing at the memorial for legendary R&B legend Sam Cooke in 1964. Tragically, Simpkins died from a routine bladder operation in 1972 and was largely forgotten. You will hear Arthur Lee Simpkins sing three songs on the David Rose Show on CBS Radio in 1950. More at KrobCollection.com
