David Neale has been the Director of Animals Asia Foundation since 2002. David shares with us how when he was 14, he saw chimpanzees used as photo props whilst in Majorca, Spain, and how it ignited his passion for animal welfare. Sabrina shares similar memories of seeing Africa Greys, snakes, and a Tiger. She also mentions apps where the public can record these animals to influence change. David says his study choices were limited, so studied Environmental Science and then a postgraduate in Conservation Biology. After graduating, David worked as an ecologist for a river restoration charity in England, which aimed to restore lost habitats. When David surveyed for European water voles (a species that declined due to pollution, habitat loss and the release of mink), he determined the mink would need to be culled. This introduces an animal welfare element. David did not want to contribute to this, so embarked on a trip to Asia and South America to determine an alternative career. Whilst travelling, he visited zoos and sanctuaries, reporting his observations to the Born Free Foundation. David shared with us a key moment in Vietnam, where he observed two caged bears, one of which was a cub. He learnt they were destined to be milked for bile at a bear farm. Horrified, he reported this to Born Free who referred him to the recently established Animals Asia Foundation by Jill Robinson. Through communications with Jill, David helped establish Animals Asia in the UK, spending approximately eight years giving talks to all manners of people. Concurrently, David wanted to contribute to the welfare of farmed animals beyond being a vegan, so he volunteered as a Political Coordinator for the British Hen Welfare Trust. This trust rehomes laying hens after they have stopped being economically viable. From here David, attended Asia for Animals, a conference of all organisations which occurs every two years to discuss relevant issues and increase collaborations, although this was rare between conferences. David wanted a more long-term collaboration between organisations so established Asia for Animals Coalition. It aims to allow the sharing of information to improve animal welfare. Within the coalition are species-specific working groups. David introduces us to his blogs on preventing future pandemics through altering the way livestock animals are managed and the consumption of animals both domestic and exotic to be more sustainable. He shares how the covid pandemic has highlighted this to the public. David continues by sharing his career progression through Animals Asia, by being more hands-on in China. Here he worked with the China Zoo Association to remove circuses within their businesses to improve animal welfare. This change occurred in 2011. Animals Asia then progressed to provide advice and knowledge to further improve welfare in Chinese zoos through workshops. David shares with us the education programme to instruct the public on the wild behaviour and needs of species and why scenarios such as bear farms are bad for the species. He then mentions their work with the Chinese veterinary medical association, educating their students on how their care can impact their welfare. Animals Asia invested in outside veterinary experts to teach in universities which have resulted in overall improvements. David then discusses the illegal wildlife trade in Vietnam and working with the Government to set up a sanctuary in Tam Dao National Park for formally farmed bears, and capacity building across centres to improve welfare and knowledge. David then talks about replacing elephant riding with ethical elephant tourism in Vietnam. This entails guided tours that follow the elephants within their habitat, this benefits all stakeholders including the elephants and creates more income. David concludes by telling us the story of a 60-year-old elephant, who was rescued by the team from her life of being used for rides. She lived four years within the reserve where she interacted with a wild male elephant and ventured outside the reserve. "As long as there's cruelty and exploitation being inflicted on animals, I will be motivated to do everything I can to end it."In July 2018, Dan was a member of the Born Free team who relocated King the lion cub from his temporary home in Belgium to its big cat sanctuary in South Africa."King became a bit of a Born Free poster boy because the details of his tragic start in life affected us all so deeply," Dan explains. "The international collaboration that followed in conjunction with Natuurhulpcentrum in Belgium, Kenya Airways, Shamwari Private Game Reserve and others, is exemplary of how Born Free can operate and get the job done in the most complex and challenging circumstances."Beyond Born Free, Dan is also a Patron of Voice For Asian Elephants Society and Naturewatch Foundation and an Ambassador for the International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals.Dan: "I know there are a huge number of people who share my passion for the cause. George Logan is a concept advertising photographer from the UK and has been shooting over 30 years. Recently he’s put together a book about lions with the Born Free Foundation who work around the globe. They help and can provide sanctuaries so animals can live as normal a life as possible – but it will never compare to the wild. George’s passion stems from his love of lions at a young age and frequently visits Kenya, Ethiopia, Zambia, Tanzania,Botswana, South Africa and Namibia. Lions are definitely interesting animals, you all remember seeing them visiting zoos. But to people like George its something they dislike and he’s doing his best to keep them in the wild through his charity work. But time is short and they are rapidly becoming extinct because of humans. He talks to us about the life of a lion, the Maasai warriors, poachers and conservation too. When you look at George’s work you see a well executed plan and vision. One of the funny one’s is the Costa Rica shoot for semi wild monkeys for Ikea. We even discuss why its important for him to shoot the right way. Another example of careful planning was the football “bad boys” project he worked on. This was all about recreating iconic football moments with children and did really well, it most retweeted picture according to the daily mirror. In this one we discuss: chasing a cheetah with a Hasselblad making images stand out zoo’s effects personal projects & belief trajectory to extinction seeing death hypocrisy of helping covid + human interference importance of celebrities dangers of shooting skill vs technology Random questions Of course we have to have some fun, so find out why we discuss double camouflage ! Will Travers OBE is one of the UK’s most influential animal rights activists, founding the Born Free Foundation in 1984 with his parents, originally under the name Zoo Check. As most of the world has been placed under strict lockdown and quarantine rules, we’re beginning to get a glimpse into what life must be like for animals trapped in zoos, forced to live in confined spaces under lock and key “for not much more than our own amusement”. Born Free’s latest campaign, “Creature Discomforts”, tackles this issue with the help of the animators at Aardman. Will talks about the distress and anxiety caused to animals when they’re not allowed to roam their natural habitats, and how we’ve “distorted and warped” our relationship with wild animals. Later in the conversation Will discusses the reprehensible poaching and canned hunting industries, and the threat they pose to animals like Lions. The discussion moves onto the life of George Adamson, the realities of filming “Born Free” in the sixties, and the financing of wildlife protection, before ending on a note about Will’s late father - his ever-present guide to knowing what’s right and wrong in the world. For further information on this and other episodes, visit: http://www.treesacrowd.fm/born-free See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I am honored to have Dr. Liz Tyson as our guest today. Liz is an animal advocate with over 16 years of experience working for animal protection and conservation. Since 2018 she has been with Born Free USA and is currently the Program Director; here she is responsible for running the largest primate sanctuary. She is also leading the organization's campaign program to help stop illegal pet trade and roadside zoo operations. Liz has worked as a freelance consultant for the organization’s linked charity, Born Free Foundation in her native United Kingdom for some years prior to taking up her current role. She has been all over the world — UK, Ireland, Colombia, Spain, Middle East, Bolivia, Ethiopia, and Peru —advocating for animals. Some of her work includes running sterilization programs for street dogs in the Middle East, and working with indigenous communities in the Colombian Amazon to bring the end to hunting of wild primates. In this episode, Liz shares the stories of the monkeys that come into the care of the primate sanctuary team. The sanctuary gives monkeys a second life after a traumatic first life. She shares the stories of rescued animals from terrible conditions at roadside zoos and how people think a monkey makes a great pet then abandons it after they realize it IS a wild animal. As these stories are sad to hear, people need to hear them to understand that wild animals as pets and these roadside zoos should not be happening. But on the light side, we get to hear about the crotchety but lovable Mrs. Wilkin who walks with an uneven gait. We will hear about one of Liz’s favorites (even though he pays her no mind!), Gizmo, a long tailed macaque monkey with big ears and a crooked smile. Here are ways you can learn more and help! Virginia McKenna OBE tells us about the brave decision she and her husband took back in 1964 to travel to Kenya, with three children in tow, to film Born Free. It became a family classic that followed true story of the rescued lioness, Elsa, who was released into the wild. Little did they know that wildlife would become their inspiration and true calling. Bearing witness to the animals they worked with being shipped to various captive establishments, they established Zoo Check, a body to prevent captive exploitation. Since then, the charity has developed into the international wildlife conservation and animal welfare charity, the Born Free Foundation. Virginia continues as Born Free's matriarch today, responsible for encouraging generations into wildlife protection and lending her voice to campaigns against animal cruelty. In this episode she gives a personal account of how our attitudes to animals have changed since she began campaigning, how she finds nature in every day modern life and what she hopes for the future of wildlife.

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the actress and wildlife campaigner Virginia McKenna. She was born in London and, after spending five years of her childhood in South Africa to escape the Blitz, she returned to England. She enrolled at the Central School of Drama but left after two years when offered six months in Repertory at Dundee. Classics such as the Cruel Sea, Carve Her Name with Pride and A Town Like Alice, for which she won a British Academy Award for Best Actress, have been highlights in a long and successful career. However her most remembered and best loved roles have been in Born Free and Ring of Bright Water, starring opposite her actor husband the late Bill Travers. For Born Free, she won the Variety Club Best Actress Award . Making Born Free in 1964, which told the true story of George and Joy Adamson as they returned Elsa the lioness to the wild, profoundly affected Bill and Virginia and it was a key influence in their lives. They realised that wild animals belong in the wild and should be protected there, not imprisoned in captivity. But the premature death in London Zoo of Pole Pole, a young elephant, who had featured in their film, An Elephant Called Slowly, led to the founding of Zoo Check in 1984. The Trust was dedicated to preventing the abuse of captive wild animals and strove to protect and conserve them in the wild. Zoo Check grew to become a major force in the animal welfare movement and was renamed The Born Free Foundation in 1991. She was awarded the OBE in the New Year's Honours List in 2004 for services to wildlife and the arts.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: We Are The Music Makers by Edward Elgar Book: Animal - the Definitive Visual Guide to the World's Wildlife by David Burnie Luxury: Language tapes to learn Italian and Swahali
