Welcome back, listeners, and happy summer! Today, Adam and Cole are paid a visit in the studio by their dear friend, Brogan! The boys have a very fun chat about Brogan's rise in the industry, starting as a young man in Minnesota undergoing a very unconventional bout with conversion therapy. Obviously, it didn't work as intended, and Brogan found himself in New York meeting drag queens and becoming a sexy fixture of NYC nightlife as well as a formidable social media presence before delving into content creation of his own. At the beginning of the pandemic era, he pivoted and moved to LA, accepting studio scenes, collaborating with other creators, and cementing himself as a gay adult brand. Despite the scheduling and delivery of content, deep down we are all just bros who want to bake cakes and play with Legos. Brogan is a perfect, smiley encapsulation of this, and this conversation is a hilarious reflection of the man behind the bro!
In this very special and meaningful episode with Kate Thompson, we discuss the role of journaling in healing wounds and softening the impacts of trauma. She shares her favorite journal prompts including two beautiful poems. Through her invitation, I share I very personal poem called "Cherry Tomatoes"* that I recently wrote to process a trauma. Kate also advises therapists who would like to include journaling the healing resources they share with clients. Kathleen Adams is one of the most prominent and established voices in the field of therapeutic writing. She's a best-selling author, speaker, and psychotherapist. She's the founder and director of the Center for Journal Therapy, the premier source of education and training on the power of writing for healing, growth, and change. She's also the director of the Therapeutic Writing Institute and adjunct faculty at the University of Denver, where she teaches Writing and Healing, a 10-week course. In an internet poll, Kay was listed (with Anne Frank and Anais Nin) as one of the three most significant influences on contemporary journal keeping. I learned about her work when I read her first book, Journal to the Self (1990), a classic that has helped define the field of journal therapy. I then had the privilege to meet Kay to ask her questions about journaling. - What is journaling? - Why is it helpful? - What misconceptions do people have about journaling? - How can we start journaling? - What journaling techniques are there? - Is it better to keep a handwritten or digital journal? - Should you journal only when you're sad? - How can you become a better writer by journaling? Kay and I hope this recorded chat will inspire you to write down your thoughts more often. It's Nicole and Elise! In this Episode we talk about all of the amazing benefits of journaling. You can't imagine how helpful it can be for you. On a physical level alone it aids in reducing stress, keeping memory sharp, boosts mood, strengthens emotional functions and boosts your immune system. I bet you are running to grab a paper and pen "write" now. ; ) Especially when you journal with pen and paper there is a calming and therapeutic element at play, not to mention again the memory improvement benefit. However, we do talk about how there are truly many ways to journal, including videos to self, voice recordings, online journaling etc. Journaling can help you take all of the thoughts that are constantly running around in your head and allow your mind to quiet. It can help you process a problem, to organize your thoughts and to aid in a deeper connection with self. We discuss how it doesn't have to be just spewing your thoughts onto paper. Journaling can be list writing, doodling, questions answering, brain dumps, topic related or just words. There are so many different options and ways to use journaling to your advantage that none of us have a legit excuse not to give a try. We found a great way to get started in journaling or pick the habit back up and that is the WRITE technique that we discovered from The Center for Journal Therapy (https://journaltherapy.com/journal-cafe-3/journal-course/).In short this is the approach:In summary….it's easy to W.R.I.T.E. !W hat topic?R eview/reflectI nvestigateT ime yourselfE xit smartBut we highly suggest you check out their website for more information about the value of journaling and some techniques. Elise also refers to the book "The Organized Mind" by Daniel Levitin, where he talks about how new research into the cognitive neuroscience of attention and memory can be applied to the challenges of our daily lives. Check it out! There are plenty more amazing tidbits that we discuss in the episode so dive "write" in!!!As always thanks for your support of our podcast. In this episode of Art and Science Punks Kate and Rob talk about why do we do goal planning and what makes the process successful. As we reflect we ask questions like: What makes the year successful? How much prep is needed? Is prep needed? Is it fun? For someone who has never done it before, how do I start? What if we started a goal planning band? Kate and Rob also share an art pick and a science pick this week: one is a sort of camera in space the other is a fun use for folded paper.
