We wanted to do at least two shows a year with an annual update in January and a mid-year review in July. Well, it is October and we slacked hard on the mid-year review, but we're doing it now! Kate Thompson returns to the show for the first time since early 2022. We learn what's been going on with her and an update after her 2022 car accident and major injury to her foot and ankle. On the social media front, we talk about the current state of Twitter/X and how after the major changes (paid blue check marks, controversy, etc.) it went from being our most reliable source of web traffic to our least reliable. The important lesson is to diversify your social media strategy because you never know when a platform may collapse, change policies, or get banned (like TikTok may in 2025). We made a big announcement regarding our project for next year. Stadium Scene has had great success live streaming iRacing Esports events that we are full-on developing our own Esports sanctioning body/league. We'll be finishing up development on a Rocket League series featuring a regular season and playoff format in early 2025. Outside of that, it's general shenanigans and catch-up since this is the first time the three of us have been together on a show since Ralph joined the organization. Send us a Text Message. The BBC's period drama “Call the Midwife” made an eccentric, lovable community of nuns and nurses famous the world over. But what of the formidable East End mothers whose babies they delivered? Join me, Kate Thompson and Smithsonian historian Alan Capps as we delve deep into the social history of some truly remarkable women.During the 20th century, London's history-rich East End, in common with all working-class communities, was a fiercely matriarchal society. Women in aprons and button-up boots were the beating heart of the tenement neighborhoods. It was the matriarchs—or so-called “aunties”—who ruled the sooty cobblestone streets, kept the children fed, birthed the babies when there was no midwife to call, and laid out the dead.I reveal how these often-overlooked working-class mothers informally but powerfully led their communities and the ways in which they contributed the to the diverse economic, political, and cultural shaping of the East End. And as this May marks 83 years since the end of the Blitz, I celebrate the astonishing ingenuity, resilience, and strength of the East End women who faced the horrors of war in their own neighborhood streets. We also discuss the importance of documenting social histories and how I brought the stories of these unrecognized women into the spotlight. I hope you enjoy. Thank you to our media partner: Family History Zone – a website covering archives, history and genealogy. The government needs her conscious to stand trial and ask a guy who's both a forensic psychologist and sleep specialist to wake her up. It's an extremely risky process as it turns out that before this event happened, Anna was investigating a possible connection between some murders and a government entity who, if they're implicated, might just add an extremely dangerous dimension to this whole affair. It's the kind of book that is likely to be picked up by a lot of readers and spark a lot of debate.  The Wartime Bookclub by Kate Thompson. Set on the Channel Island of Jersey during the German Occupation in WW2, in a place where the Nazis are firmly in control, the small population finds ways to rebel and show resistance. The library becomes the centre of town for many, with young Grace making sure that books and reading are still available and, despite an increasing number of banned books making the Nazis' list, establishes a bookclub which helps protect the heart of the community. Her friend Bea works for the postal service where she manages to intercept letters sent by would be collaborators to the authorities. Against a background of ordinary people trying to get on with their lives in such awful circumstances, and based on real historical events, this is a gentle insight into an extraordinary time.  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jennifer Check and Anita “Needy” Lesnicky are best friends living in the town of Devil's Kettle, best known for its waterfall and high school football team.  When Jennifer suggests she and Needy step out to see a band, Low Shoulder, at the local roadhouse, Melody Lane, Needy's reluctant.  She's rather spend the night with Chip, her boyfriend.  But Jennifer's nothing if not persuasive. Upon arriving at Melody Lane, it's clear the band is a bunch of locals posing as hipsters from the city.  But Jennifer's entranced by the lead singer, Nikolai, who she finds “salty,” and as the set heats up, so does Melody Lane.  A fire soon engulfs the bar, and after escaping, Jennifer and Needy are beckoned to the band's van.  Jennifer succumbs, but Needy runs home, only to find Jennifer in her kitchen, beaten, bloody, and gorging herself on Boston Market chicken.  What's happened?  And what does it mean when certain members of their high school class end up dead, mangled, drained of their blood?  Needy suspects something bigger than a few random murders at play, and wonders if maybe, just maybe, her bestie's at the center of it all.

We met via a great network we are both part of, called the Chief of Staff Network. It's a great active community filled with interesting, inspiring, empathetic professionals. If you're a Chief of Staff, (or close enough) highly recommend checking it out!If you're going through something personal right now outside of work, I highly recommend this episode. Kate's perspective and how she's shifted her mindset to accept and thrive in the season of what some may see as negative circumstances is inspiring. In this episode, we cover:* Navigating a cancer diagnosis along with being a mom and being laid off for the 3rd time* How positivity is like an orbit, and avoiding toxic positivity* Why she relates to describing herself more as verbs than nouns in her career these days and how to provide clarity to others about what she does* How she's creating her ideal clients rather than selling to them or attracting them* Conscious leadership, and what it means to create vs to reactQuote of the day:* “I think about why people are burnt out or feeling like there's got to be more or feeling a lack of meaning in their work. I think so much of it comes down to the fact that we can't see the difference we're making. We can't see the change that we make in this kind of tech knowledge work environment. Whereas when you are close to the earth: cook a meal, you create a thing, you plow the field, whatever it is, you can see ‘I did work and this is different.'” - KateAmanda's post-recording reflections:I love what Kate said about how you don't own positivity, but it is somehow attached or connected to you. An orbit implies that there's some pull toward, and eventually away from you. And it's okay if positivity isn't always nearby- it comes and goes just like the seasons do. I think about this in navigating my own journey of being laid off. Some days the positivity is really close, like summer. And some days, when an unexpected pet injury turns into a multi-thousand dollar surgery and you're stressed and overwhelmed, and the positivity is like winter, it feels really far away. I'm allowing myself to go through the ebb and flow of emotions, but damn it's not always easy.Ps. Did you like the video format this week?
