In this episode we had the amazing opportunity to talk with Sarah Caldwell.Sarah is a psychotherapist with an online practice based out of Park City, Utah. Sarah helps motivated individuals find relief from anxiety, relationship issues and career stress through individual therapy. Sarah shares with us the importance of living into your values when making decisions, overcoming anxiety and stepping into courage. She talks about how easily we can be lead astray because we are community oriented humans. It is important for us to recognize and be present so that we can define what are values are in the moment and thus better understand what is driving us to do what we do and react how we react. It is important to understand the value that we are holding onto in different situations so that you can respond instead of react. Knowing your values makes it easier to not only  move into growth and courage, but these values keep you on track and driven to push through the discomfort.Sarah also mentions the benefit of starting small with growth or courageous steps. She says that it is also important to look back at your own life and see if there are similar moments from your past that can help you stay motivated as you re-witness your past successes. Having people to celebrate and support you is incredibly valuable too. Sarah shares that there is a really good power pose that can help with feeling more powerful and confident  (sometimes referred to as the superhero pose) where feet are hips width and arms are on the hips, standing tall and the chin is lifted. This pose tells your mind that you are ready for anything. It also lowers cortisol and gently raises testosterone in the body. Magic. We also talk about the fact that it takes courage to reach out for help and be vulnerable that space. This is a beautiful way to demonstrate self love. You are prioritizing your mental health which is fundamental to being. Matt Stone is an avid climber, paraglider and diver that has spent the better half of the past ten years living all over the world. His passion for active adventure, cultural immersion and impactful change within communities, led him to start an expedition company that enables individuals from all walks of life to have transformational travel experiences. His mission statement is, "Change Your Life, See The World, Make A Difference."We had such a blast talking with Matt about the ebbs and flows of moving through the different dimensions of life via the flow state. Matt talks about how despite our in modern day advancements we are still primitive beings and respond best to the very primal state of flow that comes from being placed in survival-like situations we can return to a state of flow. As opposed to our daily lives which create false survival reactions within us that get trapped as added stresses, fears and depression. Matt reveals that he sees high adventure sports as a way for us to reconnect with our flow state. Matt shares many different stories about his travels or as he refers to them experiences, where he has immersed himself in cultures and adventure experiences around the world.  He believes that service is so important because it brings happiness to others and ourselves. Mindfulness practices are another element of Matt's lifestyle.  Being present with ourselves in the present moment is incredibly important for applying to our lives every day. Matt's courage story is a little ironic in that he doesn't really see all of his high adrenaline adventures as being courageous. Instead it is the everyday courage he applies to staying focused and committed to his work and see it through as being how he personally steps into courage. Matt also suggests trying to find your flow as early in the day as possible. For instance if walking your do puts you into a flow state then do that first thing so that you can get yourself aligned for being in flow the rest of the day. Brilliant suggestion!Seeing life through different languages. Motorcycling across South America, climbing in the andes, paragliding through the Himalayas, non profit work in the amazons - rural Quechua communities. Moving through life with a purpose and how when we are lost we can use it as a springboard effect to redefine a greater version of ourselves.Right now I have a free webinar and a free survival kit giveaway. Cary Platto is the President & Co-Founder at First Mile Cycle Works in Lafayette, CA. He is a high energy leader with a deep background in product management, merchandising and marketing communications, retail and outdoor education.  He is also specialized in the Outdoor, Active Lifestyle and Cycling industries. It was such a pleasure to have Carey join us on the show. Ever the outdoor enthusiast Carey has been involved in the outdoor retail industry for a long time. Now he shares his in depth knowledge of the MTB and cycling world with those that come to his Bike shop in Lafayette and with the Daring to Dabble Podcast.Right out of the gates Carey shares his most recent experiences riding North Star in Tahoe. We know he can crush it but what he shares is so much more important in that he discusses the fact that he chose to skip a feature on the downhill trail. This leads to a discussion about knowing when things are right for you and when it is a good time to pass. We reference the progression of life and staying in alignment with goals and interests continually, which leads to landing in professions, places or circumstances in life that early on we might not have thought were possible. We also talk about Coddiwompling which is to travel confidently without knowing the final destination. The key in that coddiwompling is simply staying true to oneself and interests so you are almost always headed in the right direction. This travel is the progression, and that journey ideally brings you closer to yourself. Another perspective that Carey suggests is to following what you love in life. This is not saying that is has to be so finite as only one activity etc. It can have a larger scope for instance loving community and allowing that passion to drive your career, decisions and use of time to honor it. That is truly what brings you closer to living a fulfilling life.  There is a courage in that life approach too. An awareness of listening to yourself and a curiosity to dive deeper, paired with the courage to take action in following through with what you learn from you. Carey shares a maxim during our talk, he mentions how he "plays to win as opposed to playing not to lose". Carey sees this philosophy as a positive version of living life and even applies it to bike riding and the approach he shares with his riding students which is to "ride the bike and not let the bike ride you." It's about showing up in your own life and listening to your internal compass so that you can take the right steps for your personal journey instead of just landing where you land. Finally, we speak about being honest with yourself and instead of letting societal norm dictate and determine your life directions, goals etc. we ask our listeners to inquire deeply within themselves to understand why they are where they are. We all have agency and this is the moment to look inside and double check that you are on the right path for you. We invite you to try and to learn and to experience all that life has to offer and then see where it takes you. Our Stories of Courage

Play Episode Play 24 sec Highlight Listen Later Aug 31, 2022 36:14

One of the first courageous steps you can take is to stop worrying about what other people with think.  Each of our life journeys is personal. Authentic living is courageous living because we have to let go of other people's judgements and opinions and instead do and be in ways that feel right and bring us joy. This is what Elise and I believe to be the most fundamental element of a life well-lived having the courage and self awareness to listen to your inner voice and allow it to guide you towards those things that will fulfill and satisfy you.  In this episode Elise and I share some of our own personal courage stories where we broke through personal discomfort and fear to try new things and lean into living. I share my shift from fear of being alone to craving those empowering, self-defining experiences. I speak about how pushing through the fear of going on solo missions allowed me to develop and harness my confidence. This confidence perpetuated feelings of freedom and a deepened my understanding for my own abilities, how things in my environment function (experiential learning) and also opened up doors to parts of my psyche that I was unaware of. Elise has a different version of the story in that she started doing a lot of solo missions earlier on in life based on her location (the north-west). Something that she experienced returning in to the Bay Area is that she then starting listening to other people's reaction of the trips she would do.  Most people were shocked and excited and intrigued by her solo behavior and courage but they were also concerned for her well-being. Elise realized that the more time she spent with people who were questioning her safety on her adventures, the more she internalized their fear and found her mind adopting it as well. - Courage is knowing yourself so well that you can't be swayed by other people's judgements and opinions, even if they think they are being supportive.Elise then shares about her shift out of her traditional work experience to move into a part time format. This was courageous. Living against the grain creates confusion for others and that can cause more questioning of personal decisions. Elise had her whole community questioned her decision and that cause Elise to get confused and she had to dig deep into her truth to stay the course. We want to encourage our listeners to do the work to become more self-aware, to be self-compassionate and kind and to hone courageous action.  Try new things, learn about yourself and then try new things and learn about yourself.  And when you take the steps and the actions that allow you to do and be who you want to be you get to be aligned and that feels amazing!!! It's the difference between ease and friction. A simple way to understand when you are staying on your own path.  Choose ease. Thanks for your support of our podcast. Courage is the key to living!

Play Episode Play 52 sec Highlight Listen Later Aug 24, 2022 31:13

What is courage and why is it so difficult for us to push through our comfort zones and exercise courage so that we can create lives that are aligned?Elise and I have decided to use this season to tackle the concept and application of courage so that we can share the value of taking courageous action in life.Elise starts out by explaining that courage is hard to come by because we all get stuck in ruts, similar to those that we create snow sledding. At some points are our ruts get so deep that it is hard to move the sled or our life direction out of the groove without have to exert a lot of extra force. This "force" or discomfort can represent the courage that is needed to make changes in our lives when staying in our rut feels so much easier no matter how unhappy we are with our current situation.  We also discuss that learning and growing is what living is all about. Elise even shares a story where she tells her niece that when you stop learning your die... we decide that that means you die inside. Courage comes in many shapes and sizes and is incredibly personal. It takes tons of self-awareness to motivate to make changes, try new things, step out of our comfort zone...this self-awareness fuels courage. We discuss our own personal stories and how we feel about our own courage and though find ourselves underselling our own courage stories ie. relationships, solo wanders and new adventures-ventures. The rest of this season will include many interviews with people demonstrating their own personal courage and those who help others develop courage.  We hope you enjoy all of the awesome come to you and we hope that you are inspired to be more courageous in your own life when you decide to mix it up!2 big take aways from this episode are monitoring your own limiting beliefs and the beliefs and influences of others. These 2 factors can make a huge affect and effect on the decisions your make and the directions you take. Courage is pushing back and challenging some of these beliefs to find your own truths. We are here to support you on this journey so always feel free to reach out and allow us to hold you accountable to your courage goals and the course corrections you may be dabble in! Thanks for your support of our podcast. Nature Improves Your Emotional Wellbeing

YES! Nature can help you feel better.Who doesn't want that?If you have been listening to the other episodes that you may have noticed the nature has tremendous healing powers. We talked about how it helps you based on all of the senses and now we want you to know how powerful it can be simply for your whole body. It's positive effects on your physiology are key in allowing your mental and emotional body to also feel better. The mind-body effect which we have discussed in prior episodes is incredibly important in recognizing the value of time spent in nature. Lowered blood-pressure, heartbeat, cortisol levels it's all good! Thus when your body does not think it is in fight or flight mode your mind and emotions can relax as well. In this episode provides a quote from this article:https://www.apa.org/monitor/2020/04/nurtured-natureIt talks about research that suggests that daily exposure to green space can help with mental health dramatically for children. This obviously in turn affects them as adults. There are countries that take their bullies, criminals and others mental health patients to nature to heal and allow for faster rehabilitation. Can we not all then benefit from the power of nature? As always we encourage to make time on a daily basis to connect with the outdoors or at minimum some green life in your house, room or office. Try to look at natural settings out your windows or on the television. Perhaps follow IG and FB pages that frequently share pictures of nature.  Go to Nature... The Sweet Sounds of Nature

Play Episode Play 39 sec Highlight Listen Later Aug 10, 2022 26:44

SOUND is a powerfully UNDERappreciated component of nature. It makes sense that our nervous system would be so reactive to sound as we are animals and thus being able to hear a predator is definitely in our best interest. Thus our auditory system alerts and orients us. The challenge is that we have created cities and transportation that have many sound creating elements. And every time our ears here a sound it can cause a small stress response.  These micro-stresses over time on slow drop can cause chronic stress … according to Roberta Sapolsky. There are very few places in the US that provide sound breaks to human ears. So think about the effects that that noise must have on animals. Yosemite quote - 5-decibels is enough to reduce the distance at which prey species can hear a predator approaching by 45%"A large study published in Lancet 2005 funded by the EU on several thousands of elementary school children living near major airports in UK, Spain and Netherlands, “They found significant impacts on reading comprehension, memory and hyperactivity. The results were linear: for every 5-decibel increase in noise, reading scores dropped the equivalent of a two-month delay, so that kids were almost a year behind in neighborhoods that were 20 edibles louder” - Florence WilliamsThese constant sound stressors can also cause elevation in blood pressure, heart rate and respiration. The World Health Organization attributes thousands of deaths per year in Europe to heart attack and stroke caused by high levels of background noise.Nature sounds however, have a calming effect on the nervous system, especially the sounds of running water, breezes and bird calls.  There are European countries that employ the use of these sounds by piping them in bathrooms, work spaces and on the radio. These natural sounds are called soundscapes and there are quite a few researchers who believe they can be used as a more of stress relieving medicine. The point is that the more you can listen to these natural sounds the more relaxed your body will be and thus will improve how you feel, your health and ideally make you happier too! Please check out Florence Williams' website HERE, she is incredibly knowledgeable and has researched other topics outside of nature as well. Thanks for your support of our podcast. This is one of the best of our Nature is the Cure episodes because it talks about the beneficial effects of nature when you inhale it! We all know how nostalgic smells can be. Any time you come across smells like brewing coffee or cookies baking in the oven it promotes memories and thoughts of positive moments in your past associated with those smells.Nature can has the same positive benefits and you most likely won't even know it's happening. A brief rundown of these benefits are reviewed in the episode and include...improved immune responses, especially with Natural Killer cells which can help fight against cancer and other diseasesanit-imflammatory benefits- specifically forest terpenes can reduce inflammatory stress on the bodyforest air can create a relaxation response on the body and reduce cortisol levelsphytoncides which are tree essential oils can enhance sleepIn fact the breathing in of nature has a higher positive effect than some of the other senses.Humans are also pretty remarkable when it comes to smelling Geosmin in the air as it comes from soil organisms and it can help us smell water. It is said that the human nose can pick up on 7 drops of geosmin in a swimming pool~ this definitely came in handy back in the early days.A quote from Florence Willliam's book states: The nose the direct pathway to the brain - small particulate air pollution causes lesions in the brain - “trees in the US remove 17.4 million tones of air pollution per year providing $6.8 billion dollars in human health benefits.” Check out Florence Williams' website HEREWe hope you enjoy this episode!!Thanks for your support of our podcast. Nature Cure- Seeing Nature is All Good!

Play Episode Play 26 sec Highlight Listen Later Jul 27, 2022 19:21

Elise and I loooove nature and thanks to the inspiration of Florence Williams' book about nature and humans, The Nature Fix, we speak to the benefits of seeing nature in this episode. If you have listened to any of our recent episodes you are starting to understand how valuable nature is to our physical and mental health and wellbeing. The experience of seeing nature with our eyes has profound effects.  To begin with sunlight helps with dopamine in our eyes and impacts eye shape and thus can promote proper formation of the eyeball itself. Without it the eye can take on an oval shape causing near-sightedness. Our eyes are also see red very well which is what helps us distinguish healthy foods but also can alert us to danger. Interestingly red was the first color given a name in many cultures after naming black and white. Counter to that blue and green have a very calming and universal connectedness effect. This is why so many hospitals use these colors, so that patients may experience the calming benefits of those colors, like speedier healing and less pain meds.We also discuss fractal patterns which is a word that explains many of the self-repeating patterns of nature, for instance fern leaves. The term was coined by Benoit Mandelbrot in 1975.  Our body has many examples of fractal patterns within so it is no wonder that witnessing fractal patterns can create a positive mental response in humans. Some studies have shown that these patterns can reduce stress and mental fatigue by 60%. So get outside or go buy some plants!Taken from Florence Williams' book we talk about ... A Dutch study of over 10,000 households that found people of similar incomes living near more vegetation experienced less loneliness, and by an office study showing that subjects in rooms with potted plants were more generous to others when ask to distribute five dollars than those in a room without plants” - F. Williams. Check out her website HEREThere is not shortage of data out there that demonstrates how valuable looking at natural settings and plants can be for humans. Remember we are animals. Elise and I recommend adding walks in nature, plants in the office and vacations in natural habitats to calm the mind and uplift the spirits. #optoutside (Thanks REI)Thanks for your support of our podcast. However, there are microbes and ions in natural environments that our body can benefit from when they encounter our skin (our largest organ).  The ions in water benefit us from boosting our mood, decreasing stress and improving our immune system, this experience is sometimes referred to as the "waterfall effect". I (Nicole) love waterfalls and mention in the episode that I am in search of a bumpersticker that states... I break for waterfalls. Both Elise and I have experienced the change in how we feel both mentally and physically and it really is based in science.  Many many studies show that touching plants can calm you. Walking barefoot on the ground will indeed make you feel more grounded. There is no debate that eating holistically is better for our bodies.  We even talk about eating soil, though it comes with the disclaimer to be incredibly choosey. Elise shares that different flavors can nourish you in different ways. We can taste "nature" and interact with it in beneficial ways.  When you eat food in nature it can actually make the food taste better because you are more relaxed and can tune in better to your palette better. In addition, when you are eating without distraction your can absorb more nutrients from your food!As always nature is the winner in helping you live your best life! Thanks for your support of our podcast. Your Brain on Nature

In this episode we talk about the beneficial effects that quality time in nature can have on brain function. Nature provides a place for the brain to relax. Although we may feel like we interacting intentionally with the outdoors, in truth our brains are tapping into other areas of the brain that we don't always use on a day to day basis. Being in nature allows our brain to able to rest in a natural state of "soft fascination".  This allows our big time mind workers like the executive processor to rest. Resting our brains is key if we want to be able to show up fully in our decisions making skills, creativity and task management. This rest time also allows for aha moments and breakthroughs when needed. Nature time can also promote compassion and a deeper self connection. We both have experienced the uptick in our cognitive functions after time spent out in the woods. There are tons of studies that speak to that result as well. Many studies have been done where people are tested on cognitive based tests before and after time spent in nature and the results denote clearer, faster and better performance on the tests after nature time. As always we encourage you to get outside and reap all of the rewards in this experience! Thanks for your support of our podcast. In this episode Nicole shares her story about a super fun camping trip in Kings Canyon national park. It starts with a solo night where Nicole shares the ease of sleeping in your own car. You literally drive in and crawl into the back to sleep. Easy Peasy. She was joined by a friend the next morning and it turned into a wonderful wandering adventure weekend. The value of the weekend is that Nicole and her friend didn't have a particular agenda but they did have cell service to look up trails on their phones. They wandered to see the amazing and wise Boole Tree located in the Kings Canyon National Forest- this is different the National Park. Especially because the Boole Tree is marked as the largest tree in our country's national forest system but it is not the largest in the US national parks. The Boole tree stands 269 ft tall and at its base is 35 feet in diameter. It is amazing! It is also the 6th largest tree in the world! Nicole talks about how she and her friends tried taking a bunch of different photos attempting to really demonstrate the size of the tree. They also sat for a long time just being present. Mindfulness is so important in nature because it allows you to better connect with your environment and the healing power that nature can provide for people. Elise and Nicole will be doing a 7 part series discussing the many benefits of nature for people, including the lowering of blood pressure, the improvement of cognitive function, the leveling up of the immune system, calming effects, minimizing anxiety and depression. The list is infinite so be sure to tune in.After the tree Nicole and friend took off to explore waterfalls and take pictures of the setting sun in the canyon. It was truly an amazing weekend that was based of flow and what felt good in the moment as opposed to having to stick to a schedule or power through hikes just to tag a location. Being wholey present in nature is healing and magnificent. Check out the episode, share it with friends and family and join our Facebook Group- The Daring to Dabble Community. Thank you for supporting our podcast, please reach out to us with any questions, comments or suggestions and if you have some time leave us a review on Apple Podcast. Oh and make sure you get some nature time in. Empathy Cards not Sympathy Cards

Play Episode Play 31 sec Highlight Listen Later Jun 22, 2022 16:01

This is a great episode that discusses the difference between sympathy and empathy and why empathy should our first choice when showing up for others. Whether it is a dear friend or a stranger at the grocery store empathy allows us to take on not only the perspective but also the feelings of what someone else may be going through. In the words of Brene Brown empathy encourages us to get down into the pit with the person suffering so that we may support them with a holistic approach. There are three components of true empathy. The first is the cognitive piece in which we try to truly understand what the person is going through. In other words try to see the situation through their eyes. The second component is feeling the way the other person feels. That doesn't mean that we have to know the exact feelings they are experiencing but it means trying to duplicate the somatic experience that they are having. These first two elements drive the third component of true empathy which is compassion. Compassion means that we are trying to truly identify with what the person is going through and that we are willing to offer support or assistance in the matter. All of this is contrasted by sympathy which seems to be very superficial. In the episode we speak about it with similarity to pity. Sympathy can also be friends with judgement. It pales in comparison to empathy where you choose to truly engage in the totality of the situation, rather than throw a couple of words of support out and walk away.In truth empathy is something that comes very easily to some and not so much to others. But just like curiosity, empathy can be honed and developed. Ironically, it is curiosity that allows empathy to grow, as curiosity allows us to want to understand more and feel more about the situation.Empathy is where it's at. Drop the mic. As always we are grateful for our listeners. We encourage you to share this podcast with others. Especially friends and family, students and coworkers. Energy Medicine, at its foundation, focuses on the energy fields of the body that organize and control the growth and repair of cells, tissue, and organs. Changing impaired energy patterns may be the most efficient, least invasive way to improve the vitality of organs, cells, and psyche.” – David Feinstein, Ph.D.Sound and light healing dates back to >40,000 years ago.  Aboriginal people in Australia use Didgeridoo  to influence the health of bones and muscles, as well as, break up stuck emotions.   The Harmonic Egg offers deep relaxation for the body to reboot/reset. Sometimes the body is spinning with so much trauma and chaos it can't get back to “normal”.  Sitting in a resonant environment may help sync the cells (as has been demonstrated in many science experiments where coo-coo clock pendulums all start swinging in sync after being in a room together). The cells can reset and re-balance to encourage natural healing. When the body is in balance and relaxed it knows how to heal. For FAQs, visit the main website: https://harmonicegg.com/Harmonic Egg Practitioners:Harmonic Wellness, LLCSilvia MartinezCastro Valley, CAhttps://harmonicwellness.net/Touch of my own, LLCGenevieve Miller304 Williams St, Huron Ohio 440 371 4129 A Virtual Vibrational experienceIf you do reach out to these two lovely practitioners, tell them that Daring to Dabble peaked your interest!Feeling like you are in a transition stage... it could be your career that's the problem or maybe it is something else?  All you know is that you are tired, irritable, frustrated and confused.Let me help you with my online self-paced mini-program.Access it here:  "Is the Job the Prob?"You'll go through a life assessment that will allow you to identify which areas of your like need attention, and walk away with ideas of how to get into action to cultivating your joy and wellbeing - whether it is the job or not.

It's a tank filled with salt water to make clients "weightless" in the water.  There are options of having lights on or off and in some cases you can even keep music on to help. However, the ultimate experience lies in the dark and quiet floating moments, where your body and senses completely relax.Rebecca was lovely enough to come onto the show and talk about all of the amazing health benefits that come with floats and answers some of the questions people frequently have about the process.Benefits include: minimizing stress, relief from pain and improves sleep. There are many other benefits that come with this incredibly enjoyable process. Some myths that were dispelled in this interview... Is it dirty water? - No. The water is filtered through a very specific 4 part cleaning system. I am pretty sure that the end of the process the water might be cleaner (minus the salt) than our drinking water. Can people drown? - No. The water is only 10 inches deep so it is very unlikely. Even if you fall asleep the salt water itself would wake you up in your mouth and eyes before anything else could happen. Is it ok to sleep? -Yes! Many people find the process so relaxing that they do fall asleep and this is great! In addition, many people drop into dream states or even deep states of conscious dreaming.Rebeccas shares many other fun facts about the benefits of floating and how many of her customers come weekly for high level body health. Definitely worth giving it a chance. Peak Performance Float and Wellness Center opened its doors in June of 2017 as Walnut Creek's first and only float center. Floating checks these boxes and if you are lucky you can even get a cool little vision trip while you float!A big reason why floats are so beneficial is because they are high in magnesium which promotes bone and heart health as well as helping with sleep. The salt water in the float is magnesium sulfate so as you float the magnesium is absorbed into the skin and adds to the relaxing and healthy elements of the float experience. Floating can put you in a state of deep relaxation 1 hr in the float tank = 6 hours of sleep... who doesn't want that?It can also reduce inflammation, create deep relaxation in the muscles and thus allow your aches and pains to recede or disappear all together. A life coach partners with their client to focus on what's going on in the client's present life and identify necessary, possible adjustments. Then the life coach encourages forward momentum by supporting the client in establishing meaningful goals in their life and finally serves as an accountability partner during their client's journey."Discussing what a session may look like with a client. Including creating a safe space for the client to talk about what's going on in their life and share what they would like to work on in the session.Nicole addresses the misconception of what "life coaching" is in comparison to what some people may think of when they imagine sports coaches etc. In that the client is truly in charge and filtering out what they know they need to work on and the "coach" is simply offering resources or suggesting alternative perspectives for consideration. Nicole also talks about the fact that "life" coaches do not presume to be the masters of life. Nor do believe that know what is "best" for the client. Life coaches are experts in focusing their study and learning as many different techniques and tools so that they can offer valuable support for the client to meet whatever needs the client may have.Elise talks about how life coaches help their clients create clear, attainable goals and then the action steps that will get aid the client on their journey to success. They also discuss how life coaches help clients acknowledge obstacles and create plans for navigating those obstacles increasing forward progress. Finally and most importantly Elise speaks to the value of having a safe, non-judgemental space, where clients can speak their truth and let out the problems, frustrations and struggles without having to worry about the repercussions. There is truly nothing more valuable than having someone to talk to where clients can sort out thoughts and ideas that they might otherwise hold in because they are afraid of the results of that honesty. We all need to let our truths out and know that we will not be punished for our flaws, unhappiness and frustrations.  Even better a Life Coach can help clients create meaningful change in their lives so that they can minimize the levels of distress.Life is for living and enjoyment. "Curiosity is like building a muscle." Daring to Dabble shares the same concept.  Using Dabbling (or making small incremental changes to your life) is the easy entry point to learning, growth, engagement, creativity, brain health and life satisfaction. The book, Cracking the Curiosity Code by Dr. Diane Hamilton talks about this concept and its application in the work place.  Dr. Hamilton is an expert in emotional intelligence and behavioral science and works with companies to "unleash human potential."The beauty of curiosity is that it allows you to being wrong and fail so that you don't give up and instead become interested about how to make changes to improve.  If you don't take the time to look at what factors are stopping you, then you won't know how to move forward.  She believes that there are four inhibitors to curiosity – Fear, Assumptions, Technology and Environment.  Curiosity Index is located in the back of the book.Fear of what you may find out, hesitating to learn more because you don't want to look foolish. Assumptions, we assume that we know already and once we believe that we need to be seen as an expert we stop investigating new and different information in a particular topic.Technology provides us with limitless access to information and yet it can cause us to rely too heavily on it, stifling our creativity and possibly our personal experiences and interactions. Environment: how did upbringing and societal beliefs restrict us from wanting to be curious and on top of that we are so overwhelmed by life that we don't believe we have the headspace to keep learning.Elise also shares the value about being curious about the process of learning or changing as well. The process of creating something new or learning something new holds valuable information and learning components. So by being patient in the learning and doing we are truly gaining the most from what we do. About Dr. Diane HamiltonBehavioral Expert, Author, Speaker and ConsultantA sought-after expert in emotional intelligence and behavioral science with nearly four decades of real-world experience, Dr. Hamilton is the creator of the Curiosity Code Index® and the author of five books sold worldwide. In this episode we had the pleasure of sitting down with co-founder and owner of the Outdoor Adventure Club, Richard Bothwell.  The Outdoor Adventure Club  (OAC website link) is the premier choice for Bay Area residents looking to participate in outdoor adventures. Founded in 1996 by professional guides with a passion for getting people outside, the OAC leads adventures in California and across the globe to create memories that last a lifetime for their participants. With the OAC, participants experience amazing terrain, go places they might not go on solo, learn new skills from professional guides— all in a fun, welcoming community environment. If you are looking for awesome, guided experiences in the great outdoors, join the other Bay Area adventurers and make your weekend count! The OAC takes all of the guesswork out of planning your next activity or weekend. From Rock Climbing, to snowshoeing, gorgeous hikes to Avalanche AIRE training, the OAC has a little something for everyone. The beauty of it is that you know you are safe hands the whole time with well trained, friendly and supportive guides so you can just focus on the fun of the experience. The OAC also provides the amazing opportunity to meet new people is an relaxed, shared experience based situation. In this Episode Richard talks about how although the OAC is not intended to serve as a singles meet up situation, the community of participants are so welcoming and thoughtful that many couples over the years have met and married through joining in on the outdoor fun. Elise and I are huge believers in the value of community and what better place to meet and befriend new people than out learning new skills! Shared experience is one of the greatest factors contributing to strong, lasting friendships. In this Episode the  three of us also discuss the value of doing things that you love, even if you aren't good at it.  Activities that bring you high levels of joy are essential to living a full life. We discuss how frequently people don't do things when they are not good at it. Under the same thought processes often people don't try new things because of fear of failure.  The whole concept of Daring to Dabble is to try new things all of the time and let go of the need to be good at everything. Sucking at stuff is cool, as long as you are enjoying yourself of course. We also discuss having the curiosity to start tuning into our bodies and listening for signals that guide us to try new things, take chances and make shifts in life. Richard shares about how the OAC was originally created. He speaks about the intuitive feeling we get, a quiet knock, a gentle tug, sometimes it's a bullhorn, that guides us to make shifts in our lives or to take a chance on something new.  These moments occur for us all, but so much of the time we are too distracted to listen. Both Daring to Dabble and OAC advocate for finding the quiet moments or new experiences that allow you to enhance and develop that listening.  Choose to start making changes and starting something new, we all have the capacity to get so much more out of our one extraordinary life! There are so many more juicy tidbits of discussion that exist in this episode. Challenge, change, community, courage, curiosity... the list goes on and one. Listen to this podcast. #18 How to get your curiosity back! It's good for you.

Play Episode Play 60 sec Highlight Listen Later Apr 13, 2022 24:33

In this episode we talk about qualities of curious people. If you are curious about how to grow your curiosity, listen in!These are the qualities that we talk about in the episode.Listening without judgement, so key in being able to receive more information because you aren't filtering it with judgement. It is important to ask a lot of questions. It is so important for us all to clarify and ask questions about topics that we are interested in or simply want to know about. It also shows that you care about a particular subject or person if you are engaged in conversation.Other qualities of curious people is that they are open to being surprised. Surprise will often be the catalyst for curiosity because if you are surprised by something you will try to find out more information about it. Mindfulness and presence is important so that you are paying attention what you are doing and learn more about the current situation.  A really important quality is being willing to be wrong or say I don't know. We are incapable of knowing everything about everything and it is all too frequent that we believe we know something and then it turns out we have inaccurate information.  That is ok! Be willing to offer up information and be wrong about it that presents you with the opportunity to learn more. And say you don't know when you don't. No one is judging for not having all the answers. It is key to make time to be curious, to research to look into things. When you are curious you can make more connections between things and search out those connections as well. Understanding the relating dynamics between different parts of life is fun, but also incredibly helpful in making life decisions.  If you are curious you are never bored because your mind is always trying to solve problems and look for answers. But Elise also mentions that boredom is valuable for creating brain space and then allowing for new thoughts and innovation. Curious people have trouble being still because they are always investigating and engaging with life to learn more. You can definitely develop your curiosity and here are some simple practices we discussed. You may read a book, attend events, travel, go for a hike and explore the great outdoors. Meditating is a great way to be curious because you are allowing quiet to explore your own mind. Journaling is a great self exploration that can be guided by curiosity. If you are reading this you are employing curiosity. Try new hobbies, meet new people, check out a new restaurant or coffee shop or park, the list is endless. The key is to engage yourself in activities that make you feel excited.Try to look at life as a mystery and allow the beauty and wonder to fill you up and keep your mind healthy. Consider that there is so much you don't know and limitless possibility for your life and you will truly get the most out of life! Enjoy!!!Thank you for your continued support! Welcome to Season 2 of the Daring to Dabble podcastOur theme for this season is curiosity?  Why? Because it part of our framework for how to Dabble, but more importantly it is an essential piece to life. We honestly think it is our life force and what makes life fun and interesting. It can also serve as a tool to helping you create your best life filled with joy and satisfaction! Why should you care about curiosity?Have you ever considered what role curiosity plays in your life?  Most of us (adults) don't because of societal influence. We learn at an early age then once you have learned something and are considered an expert being curious about that subject matter is no longer necessary. The beauty of the internet (our world wide connection) is that we have easy access to witnessing how fluid life is and the dynamic qualities of everything. Curiosity can be infinite because new information is always being discovered and/or changing. We want to encourage adults to take back that living and amazing curiosity."It gives people permission to fail and to learn when things don't work out."-Curiosity: Why It Matters, Why We Lose It And How To Get It Back (Forbes.com -Christy Geiger) Different types of Curiosity:Novelty – things we haven't seen or heard of beforeComplexity – things that don't follow expected patternsConflicting information or evidence- things that don't fit into what we think we know of the worldSurprise – the unexpected OUR DARING 2 DABBLE FRAMEWORKGet curious -> Learn moreBe courageous -> Do itConnect + Reflect -> Repeat? By daring to dabble, Elise took a multiple year journey of trying new things without a plan, and ended up finding that all of her experiences lead her back to herself and emboldened her to step into her purpose.  A handful of years ago, Elise asked to go part-time at her job to create space to explore and try new things, which ended up transforming her life.  During this time she found the regenerative movement, and went on a personal deep dive to find her ‘true self' (I wasn't even sure what I meant at the time by true self - it was just that my life did not FULLY represent what was inside of me).  In this episode, Elise shares: what is the regenerative movement, her participation in it, and how she only found the community effort by taking time to dabble.  She had also been asking herself for years, “What does it mean to be a holistically sustainable or regenerative person?”.   Well, during her part-time break from work where she dabbled without a plan, she ended up realizing that she was actually practicing several components of what it means to be a regenerative human.  She took time to go inward, understand herself, feel the benefits of her emotions, discover the imbalance of yin-yang in her own body-mind, and much.Ways to begin to be a Regenerative Human:1) Shift your perspective - EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED        - our world is not made up of things, but made up of processes -  2) Get out into nature3) You are not just a 'rational being'... you are also an animal with a primitive brain that determines what goes to your thinking brain to process   4) Rest, breathe, and reduce your stress levels, so you can be a more compassions and collaborative human being5) Get to yourself, your inner self6) Tap into your multiple guidance systems: rational, somatic, emotional and intuitiveProjects that Elise mentioned:Marin Carbon Project: A project that seeks to enhance carbon sequestration in rangeland, agricultural, and forest soils through applied research, demonstration and implementation in Marin County, California.Regen 1 Alliance: An accelerator project now transitioning to a non-profit. REGEN1 represents a coalition of farmers and ranchers, scientists and conservationists, supermarkets, restaurants, food service companies, designers, storytellers, and entrepreneurs who share a vision to restore our ecosystems and create a more equitable food system. On a physical level alone it aids in reducing stress, keeping memory sharp, boosts mood, strengthens emotional functions and boosts your immune system. I bet you are running to grab a paper and pen "write" now. ; ) Especially when you journal with pen and paper there is a calming and therapeutic element at play, not to mention again the memory improvement benefit.  However, we do talk about how there are truly many ways to journal, including videos to self, voice recordings, online journaling etc. Journaling can help you take all of the thoughts that are constantly running around in your head and allow your mind to quiet. It can help you process a problem, to organize your thoughts and to aid in a deeper connection with self.  We discuss how it doesn't have to be just spewing your thoughts onto paper. Journaling can be list writing, doodling, questions answering, brain dumps, topic related or just words. There are so many different options and ways to use journaling to your advantage that none of us have a legit excuse not to give a try. We found a great way to get started in journaling or pick the habit back up and that is the WRITE technique that we discovered from The Center for Journal Therapy (https://journaltherapy.com/journal-cafe-3/journal-course/).In short this is the approach:In summary….it's easy to W.R.I.T.E. !W hat topic?R eview/reflectI nvestigateT ime yourselfE xit smartBut we highly suggest you check out their website for more information about the value of journaling and some techniques. Welcome to our 2nd Episode of 4 in our series about the Mind Body Connection. In this episode we focus on Yoga and all of the amazing benefits it offers. If you have never tried yoga or you have taken a class or 2 but didn't feel like it was for you, we encourage you to listen to this episode and learn a little more about it.There are many different kinds of yoga, so the chance of being able to find one that suits our needs is actually quite high. In this episode we speak to all of the incredible benefits you receive from a yoga practice.  The list is quite lengthy but here are just a few of the physical benefits... increased flexibility, increased strength, muscle toning, increased balance,  weight reductions and circulatory health improvement.  Yoga also has a mental component that makes it so functional and good for the whole body. The breathing, movement and mindfulness components in yoga allow for the mind to calm and thus can lower blood pressure, cortisol levels and create an overall physical and mental feeling of wellbeing. In this episode we share our experiences growing up with yoga and how we employ all of its wonderful benefits today.  We encourage listeners to try out new classes in person if possible because of the opportunity to connect with and create community. There is something really magical about sharing the choreographed movement and breathing with others in the same room, even if you don't know them personally.  Elise talks about the classes that she took from MC Yogi, a very well known Yogi that owns an awesome studio in Point Reyes Ca. His unique techniques and music make his classes incredibly fun and effective. We also suggest trying out yoga classes online if the in-person classes are unaccessible and/or there is apprehension about skill level in a group setting. Adriene Mishler has a phenomenal Youtube yoga practice that she shares with the world. Her practicality, simplicity and humor allow for her to meet the yoga needs of the many. There are even apps that have yoga you can do every day, for example Asana Rebel.  Nicole talks about working at Wanderlust which is an international yoga festival held all over the world. The events take place in beautiful outdoor spaces and there is nothing quite as amazing as taking a yoga class with a couple of hundred people in a huge field surrounded by the Sierra Mountains or a beautiful lake.We encourage you to go try out yoga or give it another shot. The physical and mental health benefits are amazing and the community of people associated with it are pretty darn cool too!!! Are you ready to Dabble in the Art of Yoga? Which includes adding some extra essentials to your Grab Bag... which will really make it 10 essentials.  We encourage you to know your goal for the hike, whether it be exercise, distance, views, elevation etc.  You need to know your physical capacity as well so that you can plan accordingly. Yes you can absolutely train for longer hiking distances. This is also the time that we encourage our listeners to upgrade to map and compass work. Watch videos on Youtube, take a class (again REI and others teach navigation classes), but definitely learn the basics to using these too tools effectively.  There is also a discussion about what to wear out there. The more committed you become to longer distances and more remote locations the more essential it becomes to having the proper attire so that you can feel good and stay safe.  Cotton kills - is the common reminder not to wear cotton material out on your hikes (or jeans) as they do not wick well and thus can cause you to get too hot or be way too cold should your cotton clothes get wet and the weather changes.  Proper GEAR is important when making these experiences safe and incredibly enjoyable!Link to the REI 10 ESSENTIALS- HEREThanks for your support of our podcast. It is important for you to have a plan and know some basic elements about your hike before you get out there. Here is a quick summarized list:1. Leave a note about where you are headed and when you are planning to be back. It doesn't have to be a note, it can be a text or tell your family. It is important for people to know where you are and when to expect you back so that if something goes wonky you can easily be helped out. 2. Be sure to know your route and if you are going with a group be sure that all members know the route. This is where the map or phone map app comes in handy. Better to know where you are going so that you can stay safe and enjoy yourself.3. Check the weather ahead of time and prepare for it with layers and extra sun or rain or cold protection.4. Know the habitat you are headed into. It's good to know if you will be headed into poison oak, tall bushes, low grass etc. It's also good to be aware of the animals in the neighborhood. This information is often provided on trailhead signs, so take a moment to check them out.5. Finally... Look up and enjoy your surroundings and the experience. When you are prepared the whole trip is that much more enjoyable and fun and that's what hiking, and life, are all about. Thanks for your support of our podcast. Please leave a review or subscribe.
