When you think of workplace wellness, you may picture gym memberships and yoga mats. But joy, empathy, and inclusion also create a healthy and high-performing workplace culture! We need to reimagine what wellness means!Today, Misha Safran, shares how empathy intersects with inclusion to foster innovation and equity. We also discuss how to reframe the misconceptions about empathy that exist in high-pressure workplaces. With brilliant mindset shifts and practical tips, she shares how leaders can model empathy without feeling performative, and how to navigate conflict using empathy and emotional intelligence. Misha shares the four elements of joy and why you can be more successful when you embrace them so your team can break free from chaos and transform that energy into creativity, problem-solving, and success. To access the episode transcript, please search for the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.comKey Takeaways:Empathy is love, care, and concern - not agreement. It's having conversations, it's listening to know what's going on, and it's having healthy boundaries.Empathy before accusation.Empathy might look different depending on personality - it doesn't have to mean being touchy-feely or crying on the floor with your employees.Especially in conflict, urgency causes chaos - slow down, take a pause, take a breath, and respond, don't react. Slow down to build up. Benny Carreon, Dennis, and Marc A Wolfe explore the pervasive 'yeah, but' mentality that often hinders personal and professional growth as discussed in Marc's book. They discuss the internal and external barriers that lead to hesitation in pursuing goals, the role of fear in decision-making, and the importance of fostering a culture of openness and support in the workplace. The conversation emphasizes the need for self-awareness, the courage to overcome fears, and the responsibility of managers to motivate and engage their employees. Ultimately, the discussion encourages listeners to embrace a growth mindset and view challenges as opportunities for development. Marc A. Wolfe's curiosity was evident early on when the eager fourth grader was kicked out of his New Jersey public school—for being too helpful in explaining lessons. Though confused by their decision, Marc discovered his calling: empowering people to unlock their boundless potential. This passion lit an unexpected career fuse, beginning as a 16-year-old freelance photographer capturing Presidents, pro athletes, and celebrities. Pivoting his creative eye, Marc became a pioneering Apple computer dealer, reinforcing the magic of Macs in companies like CNBC, TXU Communications, GAF, and Tiffany & Co. years before the iPod existed. But hardware was the means, not the endgame. Marc yearned to directly uplift leaders in transformational growth. So adding to his work as an innovation and strategy consultant, he also became an International Coaching Federation (ICF) certified executive coach, blending insights across healthcare, entertainment, finance, and more. Offering empathy, humor, and wisdom, Marc facilitates getting leaders unstuck at organizations such as Bridgestone, Tufts Health Plan, Ramsey Solutions, Synnex, Thread Bank, and Choice Hotels Owners Council.Expanding his reach, Marc contributed leadership articles to Forbes.com while also serving as an INC5000 Executive Coach. Understanding great collaborations fuse heart and mind, Marc served as a Facilitator for Marshall Goldsmith's MG100—fostering human-centered breakthroughs. With his bestselling book “Yeah, But...Cut Through the Noise to Live, Learn and Lead Better,” Marc combines a career of unexpected pivots into practical leadership perspectives. Audiences relate to this witty Jersey guy living his best life outside of Nashville, TN, with his forever bride while his two adult daughters are nearby.Marc guides his clients to action by connecting authentically and meeting people where they are at. He mixes humor, vulnerability, and wisdom distilled from unplanned detours into surprisingly impactful destinations. "Mastering the Art of Coaching: On Readiness, Supervision, and Growth." In this episode of the Arete Coach Podcast, host Severin Sorensen welcomes Clare Norman, a Master Certified Coach (MCC), author, and master mentor coach based in Brockenhurst, England. With over 25 years of experience in leadership and coaching, Clare specializes in executive coaching, leadership transitions, team coaching, and fostering coaching cultures within organizations. She is also the founder of Clare Norman Coaching Associates and the author of several books, including The Transformational Coach, Mentor Coaching: A Practical Guide, and her latest release, Cultivating Coachability. In this conversation, Clare shares her insights on coaching readiness, supervision, and the journey toward masterful coaching. Clare's path into coaching began during her tenure at Accenture, where she recognized the gap between leadership training and the practical application of learned concepts in the workplace. Witnessing the struggle leaders faced in implementing training-driven changes, she discovered coaching as a powerful tool for sustained behavioral transformation. Her research-based approach led her to champion coaching as an organizational development tool, earning her the self-appointed title of “advocate for coaching” within Accenture. Clare's journey toward mastery was gradual, transitioning from an ACC to PCC and ultimately to an MCC credential with the International Coaching Federation (ICF). She emphasizes the importance of supervision in this journey, highlighting how mentor coaching and supervision allowed her to unlearn ineffective habits, refine her skills, and deepen her presence as a coach. Key Insights & Takeaways 1. The Role of Supervision in Coaching Mastery Coaching supervision is essential for ethical, professional, and personal growth. It provides a reflective space to analyze coaching effectiveness, ethical dilemmas, and personal biases.Supervision helps coaches avoid common pitfalls and ensures they remain client-centered. 2. Coaching Readiness vs. Coachability Clare differentiates between “coaching readiness” and “coachability.”Not everyone is immediately ready for coaching; readiness depends on motivation, timing, and willingness to engage in deep thinking.Organizations should assess coaching readiness before assigning a coach to an executive. 3. The Journey from PCC to MCC Mastery requires significant unlearning, particularly around directive coaching tendencies.Key shifts include summarizing less, using the client's own words to formulate powerful questions, and focusing on depth over breadth.Effective coaching is about presence, patience, and helping clients slow down to gain clarity. 4. The Importance of Full-Body Wisdom in Coaching Coaching is not just about cognitive processing but also involves emotional and somatic awareness.Encouraging clients to stand, move, or explore metaphors can unlock deeper insights.Full-body wisdom integrates intuition, gut feelings, and physical awareness into coaching conversations. 5. The Intersection of AI and Coaching Clare acknowledges the rise of AI-driven coaching but emphasizes that human connection remains irreplaceable.AI can serve as a useful in-between tool for coaching clients but should not replace human coaches.Ethical concerns and ensuring AI remains non-directive are critical. Memorable Quotes “Hours of coaching do not a master make.” “Our job as coaches is to build the client's thinking muscles, not do the thinking for them.” “Supervision isn't about fixing; it's about refining and deepening our coaching presence.” The Arete Coach Podcast explores the art and science of executive coaching. Executive coaching is a powerful tool for leaders looking to navigate career transitions, refine their leadership style, or create a more fulfilling work-life balance. Unlike mentorship or therapy, coaching provides a structured and strategic approach to personal and professional growth. Through guided self-discovery, accountability, and action planning, executive coaching helps leaders uncover blind spots, improve decision-making, and develop behaviors that lead to long-term success. Whether stepping into a new leadership role or seeking to reduce workplace stress, coaching creates space for clarity, confidence, and meaningful change. Despite the term "executive," coaching isn't just for CEOs. It's best suited for individuals at the director level and above—those with strategic oversight, leadership responsibilities, and a desire to make a significant change. It's particularly beneficial for professionals seeking to grow into a leadership role, adjust to a new position, navigate workplace challenges, or improve work-life balance. However, coaching isn't for everyone. If you're looking for direct answers, quick fixes, or a mentor to tell you what to do, coaching may not be the right fit. Instead, it's a process of guided reflection and action that requires a commitment to change. For those considering coaching, finding the right coach is crucial. Because the coaching industry is unregulated, it's important to look for professionals with credentials from the International Coaching Federation (ICF) or strong recommendations from trusted colleagues. Compatibility also matters—coaching is most effective when you feel comfortable being open and honest with your coach. Before committing, a discovery call can help assess if the coach's expertise aligns with your goals. Additionally, many companies offer funding for executive coaching, so exploring employer-sponsored options can be a worthwhile step. Key Questions Discussed In the Podcast How can executive coaching help leaders navigate career transitions and personal growth? What should you look for when selecting the right executive coach? How do you know if executive coaching is the right investment for your career? Welcome to the Arete Coach Podcast, hosted by Severin Sorensen. In this episode, recorded via Zoom on November 27, 2024, we are joined by Dr. Patrick Williams with an episode titled "Unlocking Coaching Mastery." Dr. Williams is a pioneer in the coaching profession, Master Certified Coach (MCC), and founder of the Institute for Life Coach Training (ILCT). Dr. Williams has been instrumental in shaping the coaching industry, serving on the International Coaching Federation (ICF) board and being honored as an inaugural member of the ICF Circle of Distinction. Dr. Williams' journey began in humanistic and transpersonal psychology, where he recognized a gap between traditional therapy and coaching. His passion for coaching, mentoring, and emotional literacy led him to establish a training school that has impacted thousands of professionals worldwide. Beyond coaching, his work focuses on metaphors in coaching, emotional literacy, and the power of silence in deep conversations. The Power of Silence in Coaching Dr. Williams emphasizes the importance of pausing and active listening. He advises coaches to resist the urge to fill silence and instead allow clients space to process. This approach leads to more profound client insights and transformation. Emotional Literacy vs. Emotional Intelligence While Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is widely recognized, Dr. Williams advocates for Emotional Literacy, which emphasizes not just understanding emotions but also expressing them in a meaningful way. His Emotional Literacy Academy provides tools for self-awareness, authenticity, and deeper communication. The Role of Metaphors in Coaching Metaphors help clients describe challenges and uncover solutions in ways that resonate deeply. Dr. Williams encourages coaches to listen for natural metaphors and explore their meanings rather than imposing interpretations. Mentorship, Legacy, and Lifelong Learning Dr. Williams discusses the importance of mentorship, continuous learning, and leaving a living legacy. He highlights the concept of "switch mentoring," where experienced professionals learn from younger individuals while imparting wisdom in return. As an author, speaker, and mentor, Dr. Williams continues to inspire coaches and leaders through his commitment to lifelong learning, curiosity, and personal growth. coaches STEM professionals to overcome workplace challenges so that they look forward to Mondays again. She is an executive coach, advisor, and speaker with decades of experience in natural and human sciences through university, industry, and continuing education. Executives hire her to develop and retain their top talent. She holds a Ph.D. in chemistry, is a certified Executive Coach, and received her Associate Certified Coach (ACC) credential through the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Corinna grew up struggling to succeed as a student and believing she wasn't good with people, unlike her older sister, who earned top grades and was more extroverted. As a result of living in her sister's shadow, Corinna told herself a story that she was ‘the different one.'  Fortunately, she had the support of her parents, who fostered her curiosity. Corinna persisted for ten years to earn her doctoral degree in chemistry, a program less frequently pursued at that time, which meant it had lower barriers to entry. Interestingly, Corinna was the first in her family to attend university.  After a year-long postdoc position at a university in Toronto, Corinna landed her first role in Germany at a Fortune 500 company developing automotive products. That job enabled her to travel globally and work cross-functionally over 18 years. Eventually, she was training others in processes where she had expertise, affording her experience in coaching and mentoring. Corinna was acknowledged as her company's Global Operational Excellence Leader for over 5 years. At the same time, the company was going through a major reorganization, and Corinna was losing her enthusiasm for her job. Corinna hired a coach to help explore her career options. As part of the self-reflective processes her coach guided her through, she discovered that she was, in fact, good with people! She also realized that she wanted to pursue a coaching certification. In 2022, Corinna left her corporate role to offer coaching on a full-time basis. Learn more and connect with Corinna here:

Five Truths about the Life Coaching Industry in 2024Have you heard whisperings that the coaching industry is overcrowded and that the "life coaching bubble has burst?" If so, you're not the only one hearing this rumor. Today, we are going to talk about what's really going on in the industry and what you should be focusing on as a coach in 2024. The Booming Life Coaching MarketThe life coaching industry is booming! Yes, that's right. The US life coaching market was valued at $1.5 billion in 2022 and is expected to surpass $2.29 billion in 2032 (Vision research reports). Also, the industry's revenue grew from $2.85 billion in 2019 to $4.65 billion in 2022, representing a 60% increase. So why are some people concerned that it's become overcrowded, making it harder for coaches to succeed? Why are people worried that the so-called "life coaching bubble" has burst? In this post, we'll explore five truths you need to know to understand the reality of life coaching today, including a few misconceptions that are perpetuating the rumors and fears. Truth #1: Growing Demand for Personal DevelopmentThe demand for personal development services, including life coaching, is on the rise. With increased awareness around mental health, productivity, and holistic well-being, more people are seeking out life coaches. The global coaching market was valued at over $2.85 billion in 2022, according to the International Coaching Federation (ICF), and has been growing steadily for years.Think of the life coaching industry as the fitness industry. As more people become conscious of their health, the demand for personal trainers increases, even though there are more trainers entering the market. Similarly, as people prioritize their emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being, the need for coaches continues to grow.Truth #2: Life Coaching Specialization is ThrivingWhile the term "life coach" might seem broad and crowded, specialization is where many coaches are finding success. Coaches who focus on niche areas such as executive coaching, relationship coaching, or mindset coaching are thriving. What I love about the work I do with my own Master coaches in training is that they are able to specialize and stand out as they create a program, but they are learning the fundamentals of a well-rounded approach. When you can have an understanding of the whole person in front of you and what they need from a mindset perspective, emotion work, action strategies that work, and even the nervous system - it allows you to dive deep into your chosen specialty and truly stand out with results. According to a report by ICF, 62% of coaches now offer niche-specific services. This specialization allows coaches to differentiate themselves and serve specific client needs.Consider the medical field: while there are many general practitioners, specialists like cardiologists or neurologists can focus on a particular area and are often in high demand. Life coaching works similarly, with niche coaches standing out and finding their market.Read the full show notes and access all links
