F., Junn, S., Tan, A., Pierce, A. F., Nicolas, C., Calva, C. B., Su, C., Mejia-Aponte, C. A., Wang, D. V., Lu, H., Yang, Y., Ikemoto, S. Abstract: How does the prefrontal cortex (PFC) regulate motivated behavior? Our experiments characterize the circuits of the PFC regulating motivation, reinforcement and dopamine activity, revealing a novel cortico-thalamic loop. The stimulation of medial PFC (mPFC) neurons activated many downstream regions, as shown by functional MRI. Axonal terminal stimulation of mPFC neurons in downstream regions, including the anteromedial thalamic nucleus (AM), reinforced behavior and activated midbrain dopaminergic neurons. The stimulation of AM neurons projecting to the mPFC also reinforced behavior and activated dopamine neurons, and mPFC and AM showed a positive-feedback loop organization. Reciprocal excitatory functional connectivity, as well as co-activation of the two regions, was found in human participants who watched reinforcing videos. Our results suggest that this cortico-thalamic loop regulates motivation, reinforcement and dopaminergic neuron activity. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

A., Abou-Elnaga, A. F., Cover, C. G., Wang, D. V., Lu, H., Yang, Y., Ikemoto, S. Abstract: The supramammillary region (SuM) is a posterior hypothalamic structure, known to regulate hippocampal theta oscillations and arousal. However, recent studies reported that the stimulation of SuM neurons with neuroactive chemicals, including substances of abuse, is reinforcing. We conducted experiments to illuminate how SuM neurons mediate such effects. The excitation of SuM glutamatergic (GLU) neurons was reinforcing in mice; this effect was relayed by the projections to septal GLU neurons. SuM neurons were active during exploration and approach behavior and diminished activity during sucrose consumption. Consistently, inhibition of SuM neurons disrupted approach responses, but not sucrose consumption. Such functions are similar to those of mesolimbic dopamine neurons. Indeed, the stimulation of SuM-to-septum GLU neurons and septum-to-ventral tegmental area (VTA) GLU neurons activated mesolimbic dopamine neurons. We propose that the supramammillo-septo-VTA pathway is important in reinforcement and approach motivation and may play an important role in mood and substance-use disorders. Lay Down The Groove is honoured to present its 4th record, named “Down Under”, which is the first of the new Split Series. This time, the label keeps focusing on the blooming Latin American scene and keeps working with close friends. On side A, LDG owners open the record with “We were one”, an electro piece that combines a sticky synth with melancholic arpeggios and deep pads. Following "Aloof from it”, a dancefloor-oriented banger, characterised by strong chords and breaks. Both tracks were recorded in Bogota, Colombia between late 2017 and along 2018, and mixed in Melbourne, Australia in 2019. On side B, the Argentinian Dj Braver delivers "Pick Phunk”, a deep track with a funky bassline that fits perfectly with the chords that pop from left to right creating an amazing and hypnotic groove. Closing the record, the Colombian artist Junn, who was part of our last digital release, presents “Apura”, a blend of solid beats and synths that turns into glitch sounds through the track from beginning to end. Pretty soon the pre order will be available in records stores Thanks for your support! Artwork: Samantha Millows Mastering: Felipe López at Ondaselecta

We welcome this new year with our first digital compilation, Southern Boundaries. This is a five-track EP composed by a fine music selection from Argentinian and Colombian artists, some of them new to Lay Down The Groove. Opening the release, Nicholls, a talented artist from Bogota, debuts on the label with “Toroidal”, a deep and powerful track full of ambience and sweet pads. Next, we have “Rabbit in the Moon” by Dj Braver and “Front Steps” by Gabriel Ferreira, our old friends from Buenos Aires who have printed their own personality in each track, influenced by acid and house. Following we introduce Eugenio, a well-known name in the local scene from Bogota, who has an ample range of style thanks to his productions with different alter egos through his career. This time, Eugenio delivers “Per Aspera Ad Astra”, a beautiful track with dub and acid nuances. Closing this compilation, we are proud to showcase Junn for the first time in Lay Down The Groove with “Matcha”, a powerful track with analogue touches inclined on breakbeats. This young artist from Bogota, founder of Gabber House Music, shows clearly his own identity with this amazing piece.
This week Black at Stan sits down with CSU Stanislaus President Ellen Junn to discuss diversity on campus, growing programs for minority students, and raising money for the University, among other things.
Christina Greer is the author of Black Ethnics: Race, Immigration, and the Pursuit of the American Dream (Oxford University Press, 2013). Greer is assistant professor of political science at Fordham University. In previous podcasts, authors have illuminated the immigrant experience of Latino and Asian Americans (Rouse, Masuoka and Junn), as well as the African American politics (Logan and Gillespie). Researchers have increasingly studied the opinions, political culture, and political institutions of each community. Greer uses this literature to explore an understudied population, who she dubs “Black Ethnics.” Green analyzes the public opinion differences between African Americans, African immigrants, and Afro-Caribbean immigrants in New York City. She finds that Afro-Caribbean immigrants held some of the lowest opinions of the American Dream. Their collective frustration with a lack of opportunities placed them below African Americans and African immigrants. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On the podcast over the last few months, we’ve heard from Phil Krestedemas, Ron Schmidt, Shannon Gleeson about various aspects of immigration and immigrants in the US. Adding to this impressive list is Natalie Masuoka and Jane Junn are authors of The Politics of Belonging: Race, Public Opinion, and Immigration (University of Chicago Press, 2013). Masuoka is assistant professor of political science at Tufts University. Junn is professor of political science at the University of Southern California and has previously published Education and Democratic Citizenship in America (University of Chicago Press, 1996). Masuoka and Junn marshal a variety of data sources to unpack how immigrants in the US form political identity and beliefs. They argue that the relative placement of immigrant groups and the unique history and experiences of racialization by group as important factors related to public opinion on immigration.
