I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Tuesday morning, the 22nd of April, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Luke 3 and I am not going to read that chapter. I would like you to read it, but that whole chapter is the family tree of our Lord Jesus Christ, starting from verse 23 - Luke 3:23. “Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi,…”Do you know that that family tree goes all the way back? You will see in verse 38: “… the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.” That is the family tree of our beloved Lord Jesus Christ. If you go to the Book of John 15:5, the Lord says Himself: “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit…” I am talking today about the family tree. Maybe you are sitting there and you are saying, “Angus, I am an orphan. I don't have any family. Maybe your family has rejected you, maybe your family has died and you feel that you have got nothing. I want to tell you that if you are a born-again Christian, you are not an orphan. You are a son or a daughter of the Living God. Family trees are important to people. I think I have told you before, my family comes from Scotland. My mother's mother was a Livingstone. Have you ever heard of David Livingstone? Of course you have. Well, she came from the West Coast of Scotland and that's where David Livingstone comes from. I would like to believe that I am related to that man who was partly responsible for abolishing the slave trade in Africa. My dad's mother was a Finney, her maiden name was Finney. Have you heard of Charles Finney, the great American revivalist who won many, many souls to Christ? That is my family. I don't know whether it is direct or not, it doesn't matter, but ultimately and more importantly, I am a child of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, my sins have been forgiven, I have got a family tree, a future that I can look forward to. What about you? Let's pray together.Dear Lord Jesus,Today, I am sorry that I think I am an orphan. I am not an orphan, I am a son of the Living God, I am a daughter of the Living God. That is my inheritance and when I get home, you are not going to say to me, “Welcome friend”, You are going to say, “Welcome home, son or daughter of the Living God.” That is something to look forward to.God bless you and goodbye.

They break down the biblical foundation, historical examples, and practical ways to incorporate these practices into daily life and ministry. The conversation kicks off with lighthearted banter before shifting to the episode's core theme: cultivating a culture of radical prayer and fasting. Josh emphasizes that some of the most impactful church movements rely on these disciplines, citing historical revivals that began with a few dedicated people seeking God through prayer and fasting. Referencing Matthew 6, the hosts discuss how Jesus taught about fasting—not for public recognition, but as a way to deepen one's connection with God. Jason points out a common misunderstanding: fasting isn't just about giving up food—it's about creating space for God to work. He shares how his church's 21-day prayer and fasting tradition before Easter fosters spiritual renewal. Josh and Jason offer practical tips for getting started, urging listeners to begin with small steps—like skipping one meal a week to focus on prayer. They highlight the story of Charles Finney and Pastor Nash, who fasted and prayed before Finney's revivals, underscoring how essential these practices were to their ministry's success. The hosts also touch on the scientific benefits of fasting, such as increased mental clarity and discipline. They introduce tools like Dick Eastman's "prayer wheel" to help structure prayer time and emphasize the importance of silence in prayer—something Jason admits was a struggle for him initially. As the episode wraps up, Josh challenges listeners to take action—whether by fasting a meal a week, dedicating focused prayer time, or involving their community in these spiritual disciplines. They encourage listeners to share their experiences and reach out for support, reinforcing the idea that prayer and fasting aren't just personal practices but catalysts for transformation in families, churches, and beyond.
Send me a Text Message! In this episode and the next few, we are going to dive into fasting. Fasting opens up time, makes space in our lives for something that matters more than what we are giving up. But I think fasting also somehow softens our hearts. That's what Joel 2 is all about. It's a reminder that some things are worth crying for. I believe that the next move of God is going to be a movement of tears. Charles Finney in his book, "Lectures on Revival" said, “When the sinfulness of sinners grieves, humbles and distresses Christians expect revival... Sometimes their behavior drives Christians to prayer, breaking them down, making them mourn with tender hearts. They weep night and day. Instead of scolding and reproaching they pray. Then you can expect revival. And that causes me to pray, "God would you give us the gift of tears?"
(1 Corinthians 6:19) How strange it would be for someone to live in your house and to never communicate with that person. The Holy Spirit lives in the heart of every believer. Is He at home in us? We must learn what it means to be filled with the Spirit. (0946250220) ----more---- The Holy Spirit in Your Life Do you ever talk to the person that lives in your house? On the day you trusted the Lord Jesus as your personal Savior, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ Himself, came to live in your house. That's right, in your temple, in your heart. Your heart is His home now. Do you ever talk to Him? Does He have liberty to? To go and roam into every room and control every part. Is he at home in your house? It would be a strange thing if you married someone and lived with them for 40 years and never spoke to them. That perhaps happens at times and that's an awful thing. But how awful it is to think that some people meet the Lord, and the Holy Spirit of God comes to live inside of them on the day of their salvation, and they live the rest of their life never talking to that Person and never letting that Person talk to them! The Mystery and Reality of the Holy Spirit Now granted, there is a great mystery to the Holy Spirit. In fact, Jesus said in John chapter 3 verse number 8, "The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whether it goeth. So is everyone that is born of the Spirit." The Holy Spirit is often likened to wind or breath in Scripture. And there is a mystery to the wind. You can't explain all of that, but as surely as there's a mystery, friend, there's also a reality. And there is a real person living inside of you at this moment. His name is the Holy Spirit. Understanding the Person of the Holy Spirit Perhaps the least understood and most misunderstood person of the Godhead is the Holy Spirit. He's not a thing. He's not merely a power or influence, he's a real person, he's just as real as the Father and the Son. Matthew 28:19 says, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost." He is just as real as the Father and the Son, and He's just as real as any person here on earth. Acts 15:28 says, "It seemed good to the Holy Ghost and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things." The apostles were saying, "Look, the Holy Spirit is speaking just like we're speaking. The Holy Spirit is working just like we are working." I wonder, do you know the Person that lives in your house? All through scripture, we're introduced to his personality. We learn something about his actions. The Holy Spirit's Actions and Reactions He speaks. Acts 13, verse 2, He literally spoke. He spoke to the apostles. He prompted them. In Romans 8:26, He prays. He intercedes for us. In John 15:26, He testifies. He's the Spirit of truth. He testifies of Christ. He commanded in Acts 16. He oversees. In Acts chapter 20, in verse number 28, He guides. Jesus said in John 16:13, "Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth." He teaches. John 14:26, He's the great teacher. I'm telling you, He's a Person. He not only acts, he reacts. Ephesians 4:30 tells us He can be grieved. Isaiah 63:10 tells us He can be vexed. They tempted the Holy Spirit in Acts 5, verse 9. They resisted the Holy Spirit in Acts 7:51. Mark 3 warns us against blaspheming the Holy Spirit. He's a real person. He has an intellect. He has emotions. He has a will. When you refer to the Holy Spirit, don't refer to him as an it. Refer to Him as a real Person because that's exactly what He is. The Divine Nature of the Holy Spirit And He's not only a real person, He is God. He is all God, just like the Father and the Son. We see the attributes of the Holy Spirit all through Scripture, identical to those of the Father and the Son. He is omnipotent, and omniscient, and omnipresent. He is eternal. He's the Spirit of love, and of holiness, and goodness, and grace, and life, and truth. And when you look at His works tell you He's God. Remember, He was there in the creation in Genesis 1. He was the Spirit of resurrection power in Romans 8 verse 11. He is the spirit of regeneration in all of us. Friend, if you're saved today, it's because the Holy Spirit convicted you that you were a sinner, revealed to you the person of Jesus Christ, and made you a new person in Christ. You are born again, John chapter 3, of the Spirit, 1 Corinthians 6 verse 11 says, "Ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God." I'm telling you, when you study the Bible, Old Testament, New Testament, anywhere you want to study, you're going to find that the Holy Spirit is a real Person, He is all God, and He is at work at this present hour. And if that is true, I ask you again, How well do you know the person that lives in your house? How much have you come to understand of the Holy Spirit that dwells inside of you? And when was the last time you talked to Him? The Holy Spirit's Work in Believers His work is a work in our lives. It's a deeply personal work. Now, He has a work in this world. John chapter 16 says He reproves the world of sin, of righteousness. There's no doubt the Holy Spirit is at work in the lives of unregenerate men. Lost people trying to bring them to God. And when we give the gospel, when we preach the truth, the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of Truth, works in them. Don't miss this. The great work of the Holy Spirit of God is not just in the world, it's in the believer. It's in us. He started working in you on the day you got saved. He regenerated you. He comes to indwell you. 1 Corinthians 6, 19 says, What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? Romans 8, verse 9 says, "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit. If so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now, if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he's none of his." I'm not trying to get the Holy Spirit. I was given the Holy Spirit on the day the Lord Jesus saved me. He doesn't rent, He buys. And He doesn't move in and out, He moves in to stay. And when He comes in to change me. To make me more like the Lord Jesus Christ. He baptizes me. I'm baptized in the Spirit. That happens at the moment of salvation. He seals me with the Spirit. He sets me free. He gives me assurance. He strengthens me in my inner man. He teaches me truth. He guides me. He empowers me. He enables my worship. He prays for me and teaches me how to pray. He shows me how to serve the Lord. He produces the character of Christ in me. Galatians 5 verse 22 says, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, against such there is no law." That's the Holy Spirit that produces the character of Christ in us. It's the Holy Spirit, 1 Corinthians 12 says, that distributes spiritual gifts to believers. The Holy Spirit's desire and design is to fill our lives, not just to be there, but to control everything. Living a Spirit-Filled Life So my first question is, does the Holy Spirit of God live in you? If He doesn't, you need to trust Jesus as your Savior. You need to call on the Lord and be saved, and at the moment of salvation, the Holy Spirit will come to live in your house, in your heart. And if you say, oh yes, the Holy Spirit lives in me, oh yes, I'm a Christian, then my next question is this, "Are you filled with the Holy Spirit?" Charles Finney said, "He who neglects to obey the command to be filled with the Spirit is as guilty of breaking the command of God as he who steals or curses or commits adultery. His guilt is as great as the authority of God is great who commands us to be filled. His guilt is equivalent to all the good he might do if he were filled with the Holy Spirit." My prayer for you today is that you'll yield your life to the control of the one who already lives inside of you. He wants to rule on the throne of your life. He doesn't just want to be the resident, he wants to be the president. He doesn't just want to be there, he wants to control everything. And my prayer for you today is that the Holy Spirit of God, the Spirit of Truth, will be allowed to have His way in your life. How to Respond to the Holy Spirit Would you take just a moment at the conclusion of this study and just talk to the Holy Spirit? And say to Him, I love you, thank you for living in my house. Have the key to every room and take control of my life today. Repeating what other people have said about the Bible is not enough. We must know the biblical reason behind what we believe. Outro and Resources We hope you will visit us at etj.bible to access our library of Bible teaching resources, including book-by-book studies of Scripture. You'll also find studies to watch, listen to, or read. We are so grateful for those who pray for us, who share the biblical content, and for those who invest to help us advance this ministry worldwide. Again, thank you for listening, and we hope you'll join us next time on Enjoying the Journey.

I greet you in Jesus' precious Name. It is Tuesday morning, the 31st of December, 2024. It is the last day of this year - for some of us, we're saying, "Wow, we made it," Others are saying, "Man, it's been tough!" But I want to speak to you about something very special today if we go to John 11:35 - two words: "Jesus wept."Jesus cried - I want to say today that we must feel free to cry. Some of you listening to this have lost a loved one in 2024. You are going into 2025 very shortly without that person. Others are facing unemployment; maybe your business is going bankrupt, yes, and I encourage you to feel free to cry tears. Graham Lacey, a man I respect a lot, said: "Tears are words that the heart cannot say." Isn't that beautiful? When a person is struggling, put your arm around them and weep with them. That will minister to them more than a big sermon, I can tell you right now. "Tears are the silent language of grief." - Voltaire. I've been through some tough times myself, and the people who have ministered to me the most when I've been in the deepest depths of despair are those who sit and look at me with tears running down their faces. They don't have to say anything more. "Tears can be trusted more than a smile." You know, you can smile and people say: "How are you?" "No, I'm fine, thank you..." But you're not okay. When the tears flow, then you make your feelings evident. "Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning."Psalm 30:5Share tears with other people. Lastly, Graham was saying that God harvests our tears; he keeps them in a bottle. As you face the new year, I encourage you to be honest with yourself and others. I also want to remind you there will be no tears in Heaven, none at all. The Lord will wipe away every tear we've ever cried (Revelation 21:4). Remember the founder of the Salvation Army, General William Booth when his soldiers wrote back to him and said, "We're having no joy." He sent back a letter with two words on it: Try tears. That great evangelist, Charles Finney, said that where there are no tears and no amens, there will be no revival. Peter went out and wept bitterly, as the Bible says in Luke 22:62 after he betrayed his Master no less than three times. Yes, we all make mistakes. We've made plenty in 2024. Let's attempt not to do so in 2025. Let's shed a tear instead of making a noise. Let us rather put our arms around those suffering and learn to weep with them sincerely.God bless you, and have a wonderful day.Goodbye.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Wednesday morning, the 23rd of October, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Gospel of Matthew 23:12. Jesus says:“And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Humility - the Oxford Dictionary defines humility as a humble view of one's own importance. Whoever humbles himself shall be raised to honour. I like what The Message says about this scripture verse. It says: “If you puff yourself up, you'll get the wind knocked out of you. But if you're content to simply be yourself, your life will count for plenty.” When I think of humility, I think of a big ship, a huge cruiser, these massive ships that are about six or seven decks high, they almost look top heavy, and thousands of people go on holiday on those massive ships. But you know, there is a little part of that ship called the rudder. The rudder of the ship, it is underwater all the time, no-one ever sees it, no-one ever speaks about it, but I want to tell you something, my dear friend, without that little rudder, that ship is going nowhere, the captain has got no control over that ship and it will probably end up heading for the rocks. We are called to be humble, the Lord is the One who raises us up. When I was sitting here, contemplating someone who I regard as humble, I remember reading about a man by the name of Father Nash. That was his nickname, that is what they called him. Now we have all heard of the great revivalist, Charles Finney, but not many people have heard of Father Nash. You see, he was just the rudder of Charles Finney's ministry. What would happen is, Charles would be going to a town but a week beforehand, Father Nash would go to the same town, check into a little hotel room and start to pray for revival, and he would pray for a solid week. They said that he prayed so loud they could hear him down the street, and the day before the revivalist, Charles Finney, arrived in town, Father Nash would pack up his little suitcase and he would leave town and go to the next town and do the exact same thing. A humble man indeed! But I think when we get to Heaven we will realise just how much work Father Nash had done.Today, remain humble and the Lord will exalt you.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.

Charles Finney was both an avid proponent of revivalism and a relentless enemy of Reformed doctrine in the early American Church. Finney himself was a product of revivalism, professing faith in his late 20s at an emotional revival service. Finney quickly dedicated himself to the ministry, and began studying for his ordination as a Presbyterian minister. Despite his studies, Finney claims that at his ordination he was ignorant of the doctrines contained in the Westminster Confession and catechism, asserting in his memoirs that when questioned, he stated that he, “received it for substance of doctrine, so far as I understood it. But I spoke in a way that plainly implied, I think, that I did not pretend to know much about it.” Later, when he did study the confession and catechism he claimed to reject much of what it said. According to Finney and others, he openly preached against Reformed soteriology, arguing against it whenever it was spoken of in his presence. When he was 43, Penny was appointed as Professor of Theology at Oberlin College. Two years later he became the minister of the church there, and fifteen years later still, he was officially appointed president of the college. In this episode we want to focus on the influence that Finney had over American society and culture through his preaching and through the realization of his vision for Christianity through Oberlin College. Throughout its history Oberlin has been instrumental in influencing American culture and Society, occasionally for the good, but many times and in many ways for great evil. Because Finney's theology exalted man, the fruit of his ministry has been humanistic in nature. The idea that through social justice and fervent effort that man can by his own strength create heaven on Earth is an idea that traces back directly to Finney and while there were others certainly who shared his ideals and even who shaped him to some extent, Finney was in many ways the source and indefatigable champion of these views. Please join us as we examine the life and influence of Charles Finney and understand what Paul proclaimed: “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.”Production of Reformation Baptist Church of Youngsville, NCHosts - Dan Horn, Jonathan Sides, Charles Churchill and Joshua HornTechnical Director - Timothy KaiserTheme Music - Gabriel Hudelson

Charles Finney was both an avid proponent of revivalism and a relentless enemy of Reformed doctrine in the early American Church. Finney himself was a product of revivalism, professing faith in his late 20s at an emotional revival service. Finney quickly dedicated himself to the ministry, and began studying for his ordination as a Presbyterian minister.Despite his studies, Finney claims that at his ordination he was ignorant of the doctrines contained in the Westminster Confession and catechism, asserting in his memoirs that when questioned, he stated that he, "received it for substance of doctrine, so far as I understood it. But I spoke in a way that plainly implied, I think, that I did not pretend to know much about it." Later, when he did study the confession and catechism he claimed to reject much of what it said. According to Finney and others, he openly preached against Reformed soteriology, arguing against it whenever it was spoken of in his presence. When he was 43, Penny was appointed as Professor of Theology at Oberlin College. This is message 20 in the Seven Churches of Revelation. Revelation 3:7-13 The Philadelphia church age, covering the years 1700 to 1900, was a dynamic period marked by a surge in missions work and spiritual revival. This era witnessed the influential efforts of the Moravians, who pioneered the mordern missionary movement under the leaders like Count Nicholas von Zinzendorf. Their global missionary activities were complemented by spiritual awakenings across Europe and America, notable through figures like John and Charles Wesley and the impactful preaching of George Whitfield and Jonathan Edwards. This period also saw the rise of significant cult movements as a counterforce, challenging the orthodoxy of the expanding Christian faith. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 20th of July, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start with the Book of Jeremiah 29:13. The Lord says:"And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart." Then we go to the Book of Revelation 3:20. Jesus says: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me."The handle of the door is on the inside. There's no handle on the outside. The Lord expects you and me to search for Him but He says open the door and I will come in and sup with you and you with me. How many times have you heard the story of the young man searching for the girl of his life and he gets on the aeroplane and he flies all over the world looking for this girl and comes all the way back home and she is living next door and she's been there all the time for him. It's the same thing for the young girl who wants to have a career and meet the man of her dreams only to come all the way back and find out that he's the farmer that lives down the road. You know, Elijah was seeking for the Lord, (1 Kings 19:12), and he stood in the mouth of the cave, and a mighty wind went past and the Lord wasn't in that, then there was a massive earthquake, the Lord wasn't in that. Then there was a huge fire, the Lord wasn't in that, and then the still small voice spoke and the Lord was there. So often we search for the Lord in the wrong places, don't we? We go with great excitement and anticipation to a massive conference expecting to hear from God or we go to a huge stadium meeting and we expect to hear from the Lord, but we don't. He's not found in the overseas trips, He's not found in that latest book or that movie, no. He's often found in the quietness of the closet. John Wesley went all the way to America to find God. He came all the way back disheartened and he met Him in a little Bible study in Aldersgate in London. Charles Finney met with God in the forest. The love of God was going through him so strongly he said, "Lord, if you don't stop, You'll kill me."Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the prince of preachers, slipped into a little country chapel just to get out of a snow storm, and heard a farm worker bringing the Gospel because the pastor wasn't there. "Look unto Me and be saved" - that was the scripture he heard and changed his life.Today, you don't have to go overseas, you don't have to go to that big meeting. Go into the quiet place and He will speak to you there.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day, Goodbye.
The Sallie House is a haunted house and tourist attraction located in Atchison, Kansas. The house dates back to the mid-1800s, and is said to be haunted by the ghost of a young girl named Sallie. The house has been vacant since the 1990s. The Sallie House was built in the mid-1800s, commissioned by the Finney family and home to Dr. Charles Finney. Some believe Dr. Finney practiced medicine from the house, using the bottom floor for surgery and examination, and a bedroom as an office. The Finney family lived upstairs until moving out due to a lack of space. However, the layout and floor plan of the house does not suggest this theory. Dr. Finney operated a medical office down the road at the time he lived in the home.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Tuesday morning, the 25th of June, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Matthew 5:13:"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavour, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men." Have you ever tried to eat a plate of food without salt? Have you ever tried to eat a plate of porridge with no salt! Oh folks! Coming from a Scottish background, where porridge is our staple diet, aah - it is terrible. It is bland, tasteless, it is extremely hard to swallow. It is like listening to a preacher bringing the word of God to a congregation, who is just so very boring, no passion, no conviction. I remember once preaching to a group of farmers down in the Eastern Cape and at half time, it was an all-day affair, I was in the bathroom, and an old farmer walked in and he said to me, "Son, when you preach, you don't have to sweat so much." I said him, "Sir, you haven't seen anything yet. Wait for the second half!" We need to be committed to our walk with Jesus Christ. Some people don't even believe in what they are preaching. There is no emotion, no tears. Charles Finney was a great revivalist from America. He said, "Where there are no tears and no "amens" there is no revival." No conviction, no love, no desperation - you and I have been called to be watchmen, we have been called to warn the people of the evil one. We need to prepare people's hearts for home time. We mustn't preach to the head, we must preach to the heart, always preaching for a response, expecting results. We want a verdict. It's like a defence lawyer. Have you ever seen him pleading for the life of his client who has been condemned to death? He is not playing the fool, he is desperate. He only has one opportunity. You and I are exactly in the same position. There must be an urgency for your loved ones to be saved. People must have an opportunity to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. Now, maybe you are listening to this message for the first time and maybe you say, "I don't know what you are talking about, being born again. What does that mean?" It means you need to stop your life of total disregard for God, and you need to start living for Jesus Christ. Pray this prayer after me:Dear Lord Jesus,I repent of my sin today. I am sick and tired of doing things my own way. From today onwards, I choose to follow You and only You. In Jesus' name, amen.God bless you. Now, go out and tell the first three people what you have just prayed. Goodbye.
Are you ready to make a declaration? Welcome to the Daily Devo. I am Vince Miller. This week, we are reading 1 Samuel 7. I've titled this chapter "Stand Up And Make A Declaration." For me, this chapter underscores the importance of personal commitments that are publicly declared to God. In the early 1800s, a preacher named Charles Finney revolutionized the way we publicly declare our faith with what he dubbed the "Altar Call." This call, absent from many churches today, was an invitation to step forward in a service and. proclaim Jesus as our Savior and Lord. Influential figures like Billy Graham and ministries like Promise Keepers adopted it as a. The narrative in 1 Samuel 7 will read and feel like this. It's an "Altar Call" given by Samuel to the entire nation of Israel. It's a monumental day in their history, with interesting details and occurrences that I will let unfold naturally. But at the conclusion of the day, Samuel sets up a monument. They stand up a stone to commemorate and remember the commitments that they have publicly made to God. This leads us to the key verse of this chapter. 1 Samuel 7:12 reads: Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name Ebenezer; for he said, “Till now the Lord has helped us.” — 1 Samuel 7:12 Of course, some of you know this verse because it was popularized by a well-known Hymn, "Come Thou Fount." One of the verses sings: Here I raise my Ebenezer; Hither by thy help I've come; This moment of this song recalls this moment in Israel's history. It's a song that calls us to reflect on a great day of repentance in Israel's history. All believers need moments like this. We need standing-stone moments to remind us. There is nothing special about the markers or the monuments—all they are meant to do is remind us of the commitments and covenants we have made personally and publicly with God. Today, look back on some of those moments when you stood up a stone in your relationship with God. Reflect on two questions. Where were you when you stood up a stone, and what change did you commit to make with God? Share them in the comments below, and let's celebrate the Ebenezers we have stood up in our lives. And if you are ready to make a declaration to God, you can take this moment to stand up a new stone. #DailyDevo, #DeclareYourFaith, #StandUpForGod Ask This: When was the last time you publicly declared your faith in God, either through words or actions? How did that moment impact your relationship with Him? Reflecting on your spiritual journey, what "stones" or markers can you identify where God has shown His faithfulness and helped you overcome challenges? How can these reminders encourage you to continue growing in your faith today? Do This: Share a standing stone moment below. Pray This: Father, thank you for moments of declaration and commitment in my journey with You. Help me to continually raise my Ebenezer, acknowledging Your faithfulness and seeking deeper intimacy with You each day. Amen. Play This: Come Thou Fount.
I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 8th of June, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. If we go to the Gospel of Matthew 1:1: “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:…” Then it goes right right the way back and up to the present moment. Jesus has always been and always will be. The family tree is an important thing in most people's lives. Where did you come from? Who were your forefathers? Well, I am just going to share a couple of personal things with you. My mother came from Scotland, and so did my dad. On my mother's side, her mother was a Livingstone, and I am hoping that maybe there is a connection between the great missionary, Dr David Livingstone, and our family. On my father's side, his mother was a Finney. You have heard of the great American evangelist, Charles Finney, who really started a massive revival in America. Then of course, our family name, Buchan. There is a county in Scotland, in the north-east of Scotland, just past Aberdeen, called the Buchan County, and my first name, Angus, is also after another county, just south of Dundee. This is all about roots, it's about family trees. But I want to be honest with you, my dear friend, when you come to know Jesus Christ, as your Lord and Saviour, it doesn't matter if you are an orphan, and you say you have no roots, you have no family tree - that doesn't matter a thing. When you become a Christian, you become part of the family of Jesus Christ, and that family dates back to Adam and Eve. So if we are believers, that makes you my brother, my sister, and I have family all over the world, in China, in India, in Africa, in the Far East. Yes, we are family and those are the roots that you and I need to really look forward to because one day we are going to be together in Heaven forever. Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.
Was the Second Great Awakening helpful to the Christian cause? In this episode, Alex and Scott sit down with ABWE President Paul Davis to discuss the lasting effects of Charles Finney in the Second Great Awakening on the church today. As a former pastor and church leader, Paul explores the manipulative tactics in evangelicalism brought on by the Second Great Awakening and why it ultimately damages the Christian witness. In the discussion, we analyze the crucial importance of a proper biblical doctrine of conversion that takes both the head and heart into account—pursuing revival that brings lasting changes and not mere flash-in-the-pan experiences. Join the Parajunkie Fam for ZERO ADS always & soooo much more! www.patreon.com/savannahunderground In the latest chilling episode of The Most Haunted City on Earth Podcast, we venture into the eerie corridors of The Sallie House in Atchison, Kansas, reputed to be one of America's most haunted homes. Built in the 1800s and originally the residence of the Finney family, this seemingly quaint three-bedroom home has witnessed a cascade of unexplainable events, especially after the Pikman family's terrifying experiences in the early 1990s. As we peel back the layers of its dark history, we explore the haunted lore that Dr. Charles Finney, a resident and physician of the house, allegedly performed a fatal surgery on a young girl named Sallie, marking the beginning of the haunting. The episode delves into the spine-tingling accounts of physical attacks, mysterious blood spatter discovered under UV light, and disturbing evidence of Satanic rituals performed in the basement, painting a haunting image of a house wrapped in tragedy and horror. The episode also features an in-depth look at the harrowing experiences of Tony and Debbie Pickman, who moved into the home in 1992. From objects moving on their own to severe physical attacks on Tony, their story brings a personal and terrifying perspective to the hauntings. The activity intensified with the birth of their son, encompassing everything from toys activating by themselves to unexplained cold spots and a nursery that refused to stay dark. Despite seeking help from a psychic medium, the alleged spirit of "Sallie" escalated her presence, leading the family to flee the home after just two years. Throughout the episode, we explore whether these hauntings stem from the restless spirit of a mistreated girl or something far more malevolent, leaving our listeners to ponder the true nature of the horrors lurking within The Sallie House. I will be teaching on the outpouring of the Holy Spirit as found in Acts 2:16-21 and show that the real outpouring is for today. The reality is power to preach the gospel, win souls and make disciples. This outpouring is NOT limited to a few, but it is for everyone.

1840 was a leap year, and in November David Livingstone had left Britain for Africa. His story of exploration and commitment is extraordinary. While he would go on to become better known for his attempts at finding the source of the Nile River in east Africa, it was his formative phase of life at mission stations in southern Africa that we're interested in. Born on 19 March 1813 in Blantyre, Scotland, he was the second of seven children and employed at the age of ten in the towns' cotton mill. This was way before rules about these things, and this ten year-old worked twelve hours days as a piecer, who's job it was to lay broken cotton threads on the spinning machines. He was drawn to the teachings of local evangelist, Thomas Burke. He studied medicine, and then was ordained as a minister of the church at the Charing Cross Medical School. A chance meeting with south African Scots missionary Robert Moffat in London was to change his life. Moffat was running the London Missionary Society's station at Kuruman, and Livingstone asked him if he “would do for Africa” as in survive. “I said he would” Moffat wrote later, “if he would not go to an old station, but would advance to unoccupied ground, specifying the vast plain to the north where I had sometimes seen in the morning sun, the smoke of a thousand villages where no missionary had ever been…” Forgive my pathetic attempt at a Scots accent. Young David Livingstone was going to take that to heart over the next few decades and would become known as the greatest missionary in Africa, even though the truth is he converted only one person to Christianity. He left England for the Cape in November 1840, and spent most of his time on board studying Dutch and seTswana. Joining him on board was someone else we're going to hear quite a bit about in coming episodes, another LMS missionary called William Ross. You know how everything connects one way or another. So we have Livingstone and Ross sailing to southern Africa - imbued with the concepts of evangelical christianity with it's core message Influenced by revivalistic teachings in the United States, Livingstone entirely accepted the proposition put by Charles Finney, Professor of Theology at Oberlin College, Ohio, that "the Holy Spirit is open to all who ask it". For Livingstone, this meant a release from the fear of eternal damnation. And being an earnest young man, he felt that folks should hear about this. Initially he wanted to go to China, but the looming first Opium War led to the London Missionary Society directors deciding southern Africa was safer. Livingstone and Ross landed in Simon's Bay in March 1841 after a stop off in Brazil. Livingstone stayed at Dr Philip's home in Cape Town. Philip spoke quite a bit about how he believed in the policy that all people were equal before God and the law and Livingstone believed that too. Clearly then Livingstone was not going to be welcomed by the Boers and British settlers most of whom by now definitely did not believe this message. Livingstone sailed up the coast to Algoa Bay in May and then he took a two month ox-wagon trek along with William Ross to the Kuruman Mission. There he immersed himself in Tswana life and trekked more than a thousand kilometres to Mabotse in modern day Botswana which is near Zeerust. The Boers in Pietermaritzburg had gone through a combination of good and bad. In 1839 more than half a dozen people had died when a candle tipped over in one of the houses there, burning down 13. The blaze was made worse by the gunpowder stores in most of the houses, and the fire was so intense, it set fire to nearby wagons. Hendrick Potgieter based on the high veld had still not reconciled with Andries Pretorius - but things were about to change.
In this episode, Austin McCormick and Dewey Dovel interview Phil Johnson about Charles Finney. They discuss emotionalism, revivalism, the anxious bench, the altar call, and more. For more information visit: https://cbtseminary.org
In this deeply moving sermon, Joe Oden addresses the pressing issues facing America today, from societal and moral challenges to the desperate need for a spiritual awakening. He delves into the history of powerful spiritual revivals, drawing inspiration from leaders like William J. Seymour and Charles Finney, who encountered the transformative presence of the Holy Spirit. Oden passionately emphasizes the need for more than articulate words; we require a divine outpouring and a genuine manifestation of the Holy Spirit. This message serves as a compelling call to anguish and a plea for revival, offering hope for the spiritual renewal of our nation.
