This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 19th of February and here are the headlines.Calling it an "abuse of power", the Bombay High Court said that the arrest of former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak by the Central Bureau of Investigation in December 2022 was done "without application of mind". The court made the observation in its order confirming the interim bail granted to the couple. The two were arrested on 23rd of December 2022 in connection with alleged irregularities in loans provided by the bank to the Venugopal Dhoot-led Videocon Group. The Supreme Court today stayed further proceedings on a notice issued by the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee to West Bengal officials, to appear on a complaint by BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar over alleged "misconduct, brutality and life-threatening injuries" to him. Majumdar had complained to the parliamentary committee about a breach of privilege as an MP after he was allegedly injured last week during protests in Sandeshkhali where leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress have been accused of sexually assaulting women villagers.Following a closed-door meeting between former Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath and his supporters, his loyalists have claimed Nath would stay with the Congress. After emerging from the meeting today, former state home minister Bala Bachan said, quote, "There was no question of (Nath) joining the BJP. Kamal Nath is a national level politician of the Congress and has given his entire life to the party." Unquote. The Enforcement Directorate today said that it has filed a complaint against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal for "intentionally disobeying the first three summons issued to him." Sources in the ED said, quote, "The court has taken cognisance of the same, thereby the court has prima facie accepted that Kejriwal has done an offence for which he is liable to be prosecuted. The question in front of the court is not about the validity of the summons rather the illegal act on part of Kejriwal of intentionally disobeying three summons." Unquote. In another setback to the Opposition INDIA alliance in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav is set to give a miss to Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Amethi and Raebareli. Akhilesh today said that he will join Rahul's Yatra only after the finalisation of seat-sharing between the SP and the Congress for the UP seats for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

It's been a busy few days at 10 Janpath with political strategist Prashant Kishor meeting Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other senior party leaders, with the former reportedly looking to join the party full time. With three high level meetings since 16 April, Kishor reportedly gave a detailed presentation on the roadmap to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to party leaders like Priyanka Gandhi, Mukul Wasnik, KC Venugopal, Randeep Surjewala, Digvijay Singh, Ambika Soni, and Kamal Nath. And this is also not the first-time buzz of Kishor joining the Congress have surfaced since similar discussions also happened between the two entities in 2021 but the negotiations were reportedly unsuccessful due to disagreements over his role. So, what led to the Congress finally changing its mind? What are Kishor's plans for the Congress, and the big question remains – Will the Congress give Kishor the mandate to make the crucial election decisions? #ThePrintUninterrupted #JyotiradityaScindia #MPBypollBJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia had a point to prove when he quit the Congress which he had served for 20 years earlier this year and moved to the BJP. He proved that point with energy and finesse when the BJP resoundingly won 19 out of 28 seats in the recent by-polls. Scindia talks to ThePrint's National Affairs editor Jyoti Malhotra about how he took his concerns with the Kamal Nath government "right to the top" of the Congress party but decided to call it a day on his father's birth anniversary, his place in the BJP and why the party is sweeping poll after poll, election after election. It's a power tussle between the old and the new in Rajasthan, and the bone of contention is the seat of the Chief Minister. After almost two years of a simmering internal rift in the Congress's Rajasthan unit between the current Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Deputy CM Sachin Pilot over the post, the feud has come out in the open over the weekend.Pilot who has been camping in Delhi after an open revolt against Gehlot, skipped a legislative meeting on Monday that had mandated the presence of all members. He also claimed to have the support of 30 MLAs which if true could reduce the Gehlot-led government into the minority. On the other hand, as many as 100 MLAs arrived at Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's residence on Monday to prove the government's majority. The two leaders had been at loggerheads since 2018, after Gehlot got a third shot at being the Chief Minister of the state even as Pilot hoped it would be his turn, but what aggravated the political differences between the two now? Will Rajasthan see a repetition of what happened in Madhya Pradesh with the Kamal Nath-led Congress government? Will the Gehlot government be able to withstand this crisis or will Sachin Pilot bring down it down?Producer and Host: Shorbori PurkayasthaEditor: Shelly Walia Music: Big Bang FuzzListen to The Big Story podcast on: Apple: https://apple.co/2AYdLIl Saavn: http://bit.ly/2oix78C Google Podcasts: http://bit.ly/2ntMV7S Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2IyLAUQ Deezer: http://bit.ly/2Vrf5Ng Castbox: http://bit.ly/2VqZ9ur
In this week’s NL Hafta, the Newslaundry panel of Abhinandan Sekhri, Raman Kirpal, Mehraj D Lone and Manisha Pande discuss gangster Vikas Dubey’s arrest, Jyotiraditya Scindia’s speech, and cancel culture. The discussion starts with Scindia naming former chief ministers Kamal Nath and Digvijaya Singh in a speech, where he reminded them that he’s still around and powerful. Talking about Scindia’s legacy, Raman says, “Scindia may become a power figure with the Centre’s help.”Moving to the arrest of Vikas Dubey for killing eight policemen, Mehraj talks about how Dubey flourished in Uttar Pradesh “because of political patronage.” (Note: This podcast was recorded before Dubey was killed.) The panel also discusses how casteism runs the police and bureaucracy in Uttar Pradesh, and how people are likely to applaud the police and chief minister Adityanath, who openly boasted about controlling crime in the state with encounters. The discussion then moves on to CBSE scrapping chapters on citizenship, nationalism and secularism from the curriculum of some classes. The revisions were made to “rationalise” the syllabus in view of the pandemic, CBSE said. Abhinandan questions the choice of the chapters that were deleted, and the panel discusses whether the decision was politically motivated.Abhinandan brings up a letter on free speech, signed by multiple bestselling authors and intellectuals, which acknowledges the national reckoning over racism and social injustice, but also argues that the protest movements have helped weaken the norms of open debate and toleration of differences in favour of ideological conformity. The panel also discusses the idea of “safetyism” — that people are weak and should be protected, rather than exposed to challenges. Manisha points out, “The word ‘trigger’ is being used very loosely and when used so loosely, somehow the heft goes.”This and a lot more, only on NL Hafta. Tune in! THIS IS JUST A TEASER.WATCH THE FULL INTERVIEW: https://bit.ly/NLInterviewDigvijayaSinghDigvijaya Singh is a senior Congress leader, Rajya Sabha MP, and the former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. In this interview, he sits down with Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri to discuss Jyotiraditya Scindia’s exit from the Congress, recent defections in Madhya Pradesh, his political ambitions, and when he thinks Rahul Gandhi will return as president of the party. On Scindia’s defection to the BJP, a move that toppled the state government in Madhya Pradesh, Digvijaya says, “I am seriously telling you, I never, never expected Jyotiraditya Scindia to defect. In fact, till March 4 or 5, I was in touch with him. But after that, he suddenly switched off his phone.” He reiterates that relations between him, Scindia and Kamal Nath were very cordial. On being asked about toeing the “soft Hindutva” line during his tenure as Madhya Pradesh chief minister, Digvijaya says he belongs to a religious family and has no qualms in owning up to his religion. “At the same time, my religion, or my ‘sanatan dharma’, is equal respect to all religions,” he adds. “This is what I believe in.” He believes there is some sort of understanding between the communal Hindu and the communal Muslim, and they feed off each other. The conversation also spans fake news, the future of Indian politics, and where this might head in a post-Covid world.Watch the full interview on www.newslaundry.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Led by the political coup of Jyotiraditya Scindia, BJP has managed to topple the Congress government of Madhya Pradesh. The state CM, Kamal Nath, decided to resign from his post instead of facing the floor test. With this BJP is on track to form the new government, but it has not cleared all its hurdles. The rogue MLAs will have to face bypolls in their constituencies and if they do not win again, the new BJP government could be in danger.
Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath announced his resignation. Kamal Nath will submit his resignation to the governor Lalji Tandon on March 20. The announcement of his resignation came after the Supreme Court decision of floor test. The floor test will begin at 5 pm on Friday as per the order of the Supreme Court. The 15 months old Kamal Nath government is hanging on a thread. This situation occurs when the 22 MLAs of congress gave resignation to the Kamal Nath government. On March 19, Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker NP Prajapati had received the resignation of the outstanding 16 MLAs faithful to former Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/latestnewssuno/support

Investors will track coronavirus-related newsflow, global cues, and oil price movement for market direction today as they return to their trading terminals after a day-long break. The number of Coronavirus victims in India crossed 61 after Kerala, Maharashtra and Karnataka reported 14 new cases yesterday. More than 116,000 people have been infected by the coronavirus globally and over 4,000 have died as the fast-spreading disease threatens to slow down the global economic growth. US President Donald Trump said he will take “major steps” to allay market fears by asking Congress for a fiscal stimulus package to include a payroll tax cut, among other measures. Reacting to Trump's comment, Wall Street roared back to life on Tuesday, rebounding from the brink of bear market confirmation as bargain-hunting and hopes of government stimulus calmed investors’ fears surrounding the coronavirus and growing signs of imminent recession. All three major indexes: the Dow Jones, the S&P 500, and the Nasdaq Composite all gained 4.9 per cent. However, in Asia, shares fell in Wednesday's early trade as investors grew skeptical about Washington’s stimulus package to fight the outbreak. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was down 0.04 per cent. Australian shares were down 1.3 per cent and Japan's Nikkei index erased early losses to rise 0.24 per cent. The SGX Nifty indicated a lower start for the indices today. In commodities, oil prices rebounded from Monday’s largest percentage drop since the 1991 Gulf War, with Brent crude rising 10 per cent after Russia indicated it was open to talks with OPEC. Hence, traders will today actively track the oil price trajectory as well as the Rupee which plunged to a 17-month low of 74.17 to a dollar on Monday. Investors might also track the happenings in Madhya Pradesh after Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia resigned from the party yesterday, taking 22 legislators with him—an event that may pull down the 15-month-old Kamal Nath government in the state. Back home, the Sensex plunged 1,942 points to 35,635 on Monday and the Nifty tanked 538 points to 10,451. According to analysts, if the Nifty breaches 10,300, it can further continue its downtrend to test the support of 10,000-10,100. However, as pull back rally is already due, traders can create fresh buying if Nifty manages to break the level of 10,800 on closing basis. (Read by: Chirinjibi Thapa)
Madhya Pradesh was tipped to be one of the states where the BJP was hoping to use Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “popularity” to bounce back from its loss in the Assembly elections last year. But data and inputs from the ground indicate that Madhya Pradesh isn’t heading for a BJP sweep like the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, in which the party won 27 out of 29 seats with only senior Congress leaders Kamal Nath and Jyotiraditya Scindia surviving the wave. This time, the Congress seems all set to improve its tally from the two seats it won last time due to a number of factors.
This week's Reporters Without Orders features our host Amit Bhardwaj with Rahul Kotiyal, special correspondent Prateek Goyal and Snigdhendu Bhattacharya from Hindustan Times.Amit starts the podcast by asking Snigdhendu about the Bharatiya Janata Party's Rath Yatra in Kolkata, which was supposed to be hosted on December 7 but was blocked by the Trinamool Congress. They discuss how the whole thing was rebranded from a Rath Yatra to a "Save Democracy" programme. The panel moves on to the rumours surrounding Varun Gandhi leaving the BJP and joining the Congress and how news reports constantly feed these rumours. Rahul adds: “In the Congress, the sky is the limit for Varun Gandhi and he'll be a threat to Rahul Gandhi if he joins.”Amit talks about Kamal Nath becoming the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and his race for the position. The panel also talks about the cut-throat competition between the two parties and how the BJP's anti-incumbency factor played out in the state. Rahul notes: “The BJP's strategy is to praise the Modi-Shah duo and blame it on local leaders if they lose elections.”Next, they discuss the reason behind the strong win of the Congress in Rajasthan, and where Vasundhara Raje failed and Sachin Pilot succeeded. Amit says the unemployment factor amongst the youth and the farmer crisis contributed. Prateek quotes people of Rajasthan saying, “Modi tujhse bair nahi, Vasundhra teri khair nahi” which the Congress claims was given by the RSS while the BJP blames the Congress. Nevertheless, the slogan claims that Narendra Modi still has a certain hold in Rajasthan, but Amit says Modi's charm has diminished as “voters of Modi are in a toxic relationship which you know is not working out, but you just don't want to quit it”.For this and more, listen up! Chief of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee, Kamal Nath, on 13th of December was appointed as the 18th chief minister of India's heartland. The announcement finally ended the suspense about who would become the CM of Madhya Pradesh. Both Nath and Jyotiraditya Scindia were the two front-runners for the position. With wins in 114 seats, the Congress party had not done enough to secure a clear majority, but managed to scrape past the halfway mark with the help of the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party. The infighting in the Congress in Madhya Pradesh was a major challenge and Kamal Nath was the sole person responsible to bring the scattered Madhya Pradesh Congress back to a mold..
A total of 37.26 percent were polled in Madhya Pradesh till 2.30 pm. Kamal Nath's home district Chhindwara saw the maximum turnout with 45.62 percent votes polled, while Morena was the district with the lowest voting percentage at just 29.78 percent turnout. Incidences of violence have been report from Bhind district today. Gunshots were fired in front of two polling booths. Sources said that the assailants have fled the spot and the firing was done with the intention of disrupting the polling exercise. Sources said the district is located in the Gwalior-Chambal region. The region is expected to witness tense contest between BJP and Congress. The region has a total of 34 seats.
The voting time will be from 7 am to 3 pm.with 1.80 lakh security personnel deployed on duty to ensure peaceful polling in the state, where the ruling BJP and opposition Congress will vie for supremacy. The BJP is eyeing a fourth straight term in office, while the Congress is hoping for a comeback in the state which was once its stronghold. As many as 2,899 candidates, including 1,094 independents, are in the fray for the 230 seats, but the main contest is between the Congress and BJP - the big two of Madhya Pradesh politics.
