This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 4th of June and here are today's headlines. With the NDA poised to form the government for a third consecutive time, bagging at least 290 seats, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a “historic feat”. As the INDIA bloc managed to halt the BJP's march towards majority, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi came out to hit out at the BJP, saying that the mandate today was a clear indication that the people of the country do not want to PM Modi and Amit Shah to run the country. The Opposition INDIA bloc has reversed all exit poll predictions, leading in at least 228 seats, according to the latest numbers. However, despite a stiff contest, the BJP-led NDA is inching closer towards the 300-mark, standing at 297 at the moment. In what is probably the biggest upset state-wise, the tug-of-war for Odisha between BJP and BJD ended today with the Bharatiya Janata Party set to form the next government. Though the ruling BJD party hels various rallies and election campaigns, the saffron party has crossed the majority mark of 74. Odisha CHief Minister Naveen Patnaik served for five consecutive terms, but now the lotus party will form its first cabinet in the coastal state. In a major setback for the BJP, Union minister Smriti Irani lost to the Congress's K L Sharma in Amethi, as Congress wrest back power. The Amethi win comes as a big boost to the Congress, with Rahul Gandhi losing the seat to Irani in 2019. In neighbouring Rae Bareli, a Congress party bastion for decades, Rahul defeated BJP candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh, who apologised to the people of Rae Bareli.Behind the remarkable turnaround for the Opposition Samajwadi Party and Congress in Uttar Pradesh where the INDIA bloc was leading, some fascinating factors may have given them an upper hand over the BJP. One of the factors that may have worked in favour of the SP, is its ticket-distribution strategy. Unlike previous elections, the SP ticket distribution focused on non-Yadav OBCs. Also, the SP changed candidates in several constituencies, depending on feedback from local cadre and local caste equation. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and its allies, the JanaSena Party (JSP) of Pawan Kalyan and BJP, are headed for a landslide in Andhra Pradesh, in what is a complete reversal of the 2019 results. This is quite a turnaround for the TDP-led alliance, which was almost written off months before the elections after its chief N Chandrababu Naidu's arrest. Jagan seemed to have lost focus on governance issues in trying to implement his nine welfare schemes, which he had promised during his padyatra ahead of the 2019 polls. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

This week, Newslaundry's Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande, Jayashree Arunachalam and Anand Vardhan are joined by advertising guru and columnist Santosh Desai and multimedia artist Anurag Minus Verma. On the impact of political advertisements, Santosh says it has “never” been a significant player, as ads “simply fail” to reach an audience “beyond a certain comfort zone”. Anurag says influencer and meme marketing agencies instead have become “very important” in communication strategies. The conversation moves to the elections in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi and Rae Bareli. Manisha, who reported from the two constituencies, says that unemployment is a “really big concern”. She says that while people are talking about it from village to village, it is not a sign of anti-incumbency. “A lot of them say Modi should focus on this [employment] in his third term.”On the temporary bail of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and his speech about Prime Minister Narendra Modi retiring before turning 75, Anand says, “It is a ploy to confuse voters.”This and a whole lot more. This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 19th of February and here are the headlines.Calling it an "abuse of power", the Bombay High Court said that the arrest of former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak by the Central Bureau of Investigation in December 2022 was done "without application of mind". The court made the observation in its order confirming the interim bail granted to the couple. The two were arrested on 23rd of December 2022 in connection with alleged irregularities in loans provided by the bank to the Venugopal Dhoot-led Videocon Group. The Supreme Court today stayed further proceedings on a notice issued by the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee to West Bengal officials, to appear on a complaint by BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar over alleged "misconduct, brutality and life-threatening injuries" to him. Majumdar had complained to the parliamentary committee about a breach of privilege as an MP after he was allegedly injured last week during protests in Sandeshkhali where leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress have been accused of sexually assaulting women villagers.Following a closed-door meeting between former Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath and his supporters, his loyalists have claimed Nath would stay with the Congress. After emerging from the meeting today, former state home minister Bala Bachan said, quote, "There was no question of (Nath) joining the BJP. Kamal Nath is a national level politician of the Congress and has given his entire life to the party." Unquote. The Enforcement Directorate today said that it has filed a complaint against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal for "intentionally disobeying the first three summons issued to him." Sources in the ED said, quote, "The court has taken cognisance of the same, thereby the court has prima facie accepted that Kejriwal has done an offence for which he is liable to be prosecuted. The question in front of the court is not about the validity of the summons rather the illegal act on part of Kejriwal of intentionally disobeying three summons." Unquote. In another setback to the Opposition INDIA alliance in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav is set to give a miss to Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Amethi and Raebareli. Akhilesh today said that he will join Rahul's Yatra only after the finalisation of seat-sharing between the SP and the Congress for the UP seats for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

In this week’s episode, host Abhinandan Sekhri is joined by Madhu Trehan, Manisha Pande, Anand Vardhan and Christina Thomas Dhanaraj, co-founder of the Dalit History Month collective. The podcast begins with Manisha describing the election week that went by and the BJP’s enormous victory. After a recap of the election results announced on May 23, Abhinandan and Manisha highlight some of the keynotes, including Rahul Gandhi’s loss in Amethi, and Atishi and the Aam Aadmi Party’s loss in Delhi. Moving to Narendra Modi's speech after his victory, Abhinandan says, "The one thing that I thought was a bit cringe-inducing was his mocking the term ‘secularism’. Even if he is saying he is only mocking those people who use it as a badge ... clearly, he was mocking the term.”A letter from a subscriber sparks a discussion on the idea of affirmative action and its application over generations. Christina says: “No one seems to get the basic point that none of the problems gets solved in one generation. And two, there is something called ‘inter-generational deficit’. We are talking about 2,000-year-old oppression.” She asks the panel, “How can one generation completely remove all of that deficit?” The discussion continues with Madhu and Anand chipping in with their opinions.Going back to the elections, Abhinandan asks what the big takeaways were. Manisha says, "Of course, exit polls were super interesting this time. When the Axis poll came up with the 360 figure ... they got a lot of flak on Twitter. It turned out they were correct.” Among other things, Christina weighs in on the political scenario in Tamil Nadu while Anand talks about the results in Bihar. This and a lot more, so listen up! * The Supreme Court rejected a review plea filed by 21 opposition parties seeking an increase in random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs in the ongoing elections. The Court had directed the Election Commission to increase random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs from one to five polling booths per assembly segment, previously also on 8th April . * Over 200 teachers from Delhi University issued a signed statement condemning remarks Prime Minister Modi made about late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Modi, in a rally on 4 May had called Gandhi Brashthachari no.1. The statement from Delhi University called Modi's remarks derogatory and untrue. * Speaking of the BJP and controversial remarks, Union Minister and BJP candidate, Giriraj Singh surrendered before a local court in Begusarai over a violation of the model code of conduct. Singh was charged for making controversial remarks against the Muslim community at an election rally in Bihar. He has been granted bail. * The Election Commission asked NITI Ayog for a response to the Congress' claims made that the BJP had misused the think-tank to collect information in advance about places where the Prime Minister was set to campaign. * And your last update for the day, a polling officer died while 24 others, including security personnel, were injured when their vehicle overturned in Amethi. The accident took place when they were on way to deposit EVM machines after polling on 6 May. * That was your quick 2019 My Vote Elections wrap for the day. * We are in the fifth phase of the elections now. 51 constituencies across 7 states went to polling on 6 May. Several political bigwigs like Mayawati, Jayant Sinha, Rajnath Singh and Yashwant Sinha came out to vote. * The seats to watch out for in this phase are the traditional strongholds of Congress, Rae Bareli and Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister Smriti Irani are also in the fray. This is also the first election in Ladakh division following its split from the Kashmir division earlier this year. * Polling was held in 7 seats of West Bengal and yet again there are reported incidences of poll violence from this state. The BJP has asked for a repoll in Barrackpore constituency alleging violence by TMC workers on voters. Union minister Prakash Javadekar accused TMC “goons” of booth-capturing and not letting BJP voters cast their votes. * In another part of West Bengal, people of Sabar tribe have called for a boycott of the elections due to unavailability of electricity in their houses. * In Amethi where Smriti Irani is facing Rahul Gandhi for the second time there are some allegations of booth capturing. BJP minister Smriti Irani alleged booth capturing by Congress in the constituency and asked Election Commission to take note of the matter. * In another incidence of violence, a bomb went off in Jammu and Kashmir outside the polling booths. Militants threw a grenade at a polling station in Pulwama district where polling was underway for the Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency. No injuries or casualties have been reported so far. * And some good news for Maharashtra, the Election Commission allowed the relaxation of the model code of conduct to allow the state government to undertake drought relief measures.

In the first episode of Business Standard's podcast on Indian politics, Ankur Bhardwaj is in conversation with Aditi Phadnis, Business Standard's Political Editor and Shine Jacob. Last week, Indian National Congress announced that its President, Rahul Gandhi will contest Lok Sabha elections from Wayanad in Kerala besides his existing seat of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.
