Hour 3 (8.28) A postcard mailed 26 years ago finally landed. Plus the gas pump nozzle still running on your dime, and the four-bedroom house near Taft High that wants to become 71 units. 8:05 — The pump scam worth knowing before your next fill-up: the nozzle can still be live from the last customer, so you swipe and buy their gas. Then the postcard that took 26 years to arrive, mailed during a vacation by parents who are gone now. Conway says he got a sign from his dad last night. 8:20 — Pumpkin spice fatigue has arrived and matcha is taking the season. Starbucks says there are more than 170,000 ways to customize a drink; outside estimates put the total combinations somewhere around 300 billion. What's your order, and more importantly, what name do you give them? Folgers remains the best part of waking up. 8:35 — Olivia Rodrigo's Daisy Chain Fields hits Great Park Saturday with Stevie Nicks as a special guest — Crozier caught her at SoFi. Then Woodland Hills, where Akhilesh and Janet Jah want to turn a four-bedroom, three-bath house on Del Moreno Drive, across from Taft High School, into a 71-unit senior living facility with a cafeteria and medical office. Eight low-income units, no parking, inside an LAFD fire zone. Planning commissioners approved most of the variances and said state housing law ties their hands. Neighbors say they'll fight it the whole way. Which leads to a bigger question about why everyone seems to be throwing down lately. 8:50 — Staying in the Valley: residents fed up with a sidewalk leak that will not stop running. Shuvangi and Akhilesh explore Nepal's borderland communities' unique challenges and contributions. They discuss how federalism has reshaped governance and service delivery in these regions and examine the effects of cross-border policies and pandemic-era restrictions on local livelihoods and trade. The conversation highlights how borderland communities are often excluded from national discussions despite their critical role in conflict management and cross-border relations, raising important questions about inclusion and visibility in decision-making processes. Akhilesh Upadhyay is researching the Himalayan borderlands. He is working on a book discussing the history of the region's cross-border trade, migration, and family ties. He also looks at the geopolitics of the Eastern Himalayas, where Bhutan, Nepal, and Bangladesh - smaller states - share a 'crowded corridor' with two big powers - China and India. He is a Senior Fellow with the Strategic Affairs Center at IIDS, a Kathmandu-based think tank. This week, Newslaundry's Abhinandan Sekhri and Raman Kirpal are joined by journalists Girish Kuber, Sunita Aron, and Sudipto Mondal. On Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech accusing the Congress of receiving money from industrialists Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani, Sudipto says this news is not headline material but rather “gossip material”. He adds that the talk on the ground is “nahi mila kya is baar”, suggesting that the corporate houses put their weight behind the Congress in this election. On the elections in Maharashtra, Girish says, “There is no state-wide agenda in these polls. There are 48 constituencies and 48 election agendas.” Sunita points out the BJP's big challenge in UP. “The BJP has set a target of 75 seats, but after Rahul and Akhilesh came together, there is better chemistry and coordination [in INDIA bloc].”The panel then discusses the BSP's prospects and the sacking of its leader and Mayawati's nephew, Akash Anand, from the post of national coordinator. Sudipto counters Abhinandan's argument of the BSP being the BJP's B-team, saying it “doesn't come with a sensitivity” that the party represents a politics “different from all other parties” and represents “the most oppressed sections”. He adds, “The pragmatism that other parties show is appreciated a lot more than the pragmatism these parties [including the AIMIM and VBA] show.”This and a whole lot more. This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 19th of February and here are the headlines.Calling it an "abuse of power", the Bombay High Court said that the arrest of former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak by the Central Bureau of Investigation in December 2022 was done "without application of mind". The court made the observation in its order confirming the interim bail granted to the couple. The two were arrested on 23rd of December 2022 in connection with alleged irregularities in loans provided by the bank to the Venugopal Dhoot-led Videocon Group. The Supreme Court today stayed further proceedings on a notice issued by the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee to West Bengal officials, to appear on a complaint by BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar over alleged "misconduct, brutality and life-threatening injuries" to him. Majumdar had complained to the parliamentary committee about a breach of privilege as an MP after he was allegedly injured last week during protests in Sandeshkhali where leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress have been accused of sexually assaulting women villagers.Following a closed-door meeting between former Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath and his supporters, his loyalists have claimed Nath would stay with the Congress. After emerging from the meeting today, former state home minister Bala Bachan said, quote, "There was no question of (Nath) joining the BJP. Kamal Nath is a national level politician of the Congress and has given his entire life to the party." Unquote. The Enforcement Directorate today said that it has filed a complaint against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal for "intentionally disobeying the first three summons issued to him." Sources in the ED said, quote, "The court has taken cognisance of the same, thereby the court has prima facie accepted that Kejriwal has done an offence for which he is liable to be prosecuted. The question in front of the court is not about the validity of the summons rather the illegal act on part of Kejriwal of intentionally disobeying three summons." Unquote. In another setback to the Opposition INDIA alliance in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav is set to give a miss to Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Amethi and Raebareli. Akhilesh today said that he will join Rahul's Yatra only after the finalisation of seat-sharing between the SP and the Congress for the UP seats for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.
Today, we will be taking a look at the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.First, The Indian Express' Asad Rehman joins us to talk about Akhilesh Yadav's new PDA formula for defeating BJP in Uttar Pradesh.Second, we talk to Indian Express' Mallica Joshi about the Delhi slums and how they have become a battleground for AAP and BJP. (12:05)Lastly, we talk about Ajit Pawar's faction being declared as the real NCP in Maharashtra, by the Election Commission.
