The ongoing legal wrangle involving Republic TV Chief Editor, Arnab Goswami, and the Congress party has started a broad-fledged debate. The main topic isn't just the case at hand anymore; it has extended its dimensions. Now it spills over to deeply rooted issues with potentially significant implications. One such issue that has come to mass attention is Sonia Gandhi's Christian faith and the resultant questions that are being raised about her son, Rahul's religious inclination. For years, the family's religion has been subtly spoken about in political circles but never brought to the public's firm notice. Sonia Gandhi, the former president of the Indian National Congress, has spent most of her life embracing the political arena's tumultuous reality. Born to Stefano and Paola Maino in a small town near Turin, Italy, Sonia Gandhi's Christian faith has always been an open secret. Her marriage to Rajiv Gandhi, a dignitary belonging to the Nehru-Gandhi family, saw her relocated to India, where her life took a dramatic move towards public service—marking her firm presence in India's political landscape. Along the way, Sonia's faith was her private domain, a component of her life not vividly discussed, and never directly addressed in the public arena. However, the current legal battle has brought it back into focus. What raises eyebrows now is the religious identity of her son, Rahul Gandhi. Riding high on his mother's political reputation, Rahul has been a prominent figure in Indian politics. The recent revelation of his mother's faith has raised questions about his own. In a country where faith plays a significant role in shaping public perception, the political ramifications of this revelation could be large. Rahul's religious beliefs are now being questioned in the court of public opinion.Arnab Goswami's legal tussle with the Congress party originally centered on a different issue altogether. The case focuses on several charges born out out of republic TV's contentious style of journalism. It has now ended up indirectly forcing an open discussion about the religious affiliations of one of India's most notable political families. What remains to be seen is how this revelation is going to impact the family's political fortune and the Congress party at large. This ignited debate is a glimpse into how religion plays a critical role in Indian politics and how public figures and their personal lives are closely observed. This incident stands to serve as a watershed moment that can influence Indian politics and its interplay with religion in the future.
The Identity Project: The Unmaking of a Democracy is a new book by the journalist Rahul Bhatia. Many Grand Tamasha listeners will recognize Rahul's byline in revered publications like the New Yorker, the Guardian, and Caravan. He's written celebrated profiles of everyone from Arnab Goswami to cricket chief N. Srinivasan. And his reporting has taken on subjects from Baba Ramdev's business empire to the COVID-19 pandemic. His new book is based on six years of research and reportage from across India, where he set out on a quest to understand the ideological moorings of what we have come to call “the New India.” To talk more about his book and the state of democracy in India, Rahul joins Milan on the podcast this week. The two discuss Rahul's reporting on Aadhaar—India's unique biometric identification program—and its precursors, the Hindu nationalist push for a new national citizenship regime, and the inner workings of the Indian state's coercive power. Plus, the two discuss whether and how the results of India's 2024 election have been a setback to the cause of Hindu nationalism.Episode notes:1. Basant kicks off the podcast by talking about the ongoing election season in Gujarat, the ground realities of the Gujarat model, unemployment, Narendra Modi's image, and unkept promises such as those surrounding the sugar mill in Kodinar. He explains how the closing down of one mill has compelled farmers to grow less profitable crops as compared to sugarcane. Ayush then details how the Yogi Adityanath government gave Republic TV a plot in Noida for a new studio, and how this land was leased during the Uttar Pradesh assembly election, on a day Arnab Goswami interviewed the chief minister in Ayodhya. A recent controversy involving the online news site the Wire and the tech giant Meta has sparked a new debate on the media in India. The recent controversy has been something of a Rorschach test with some critics castigating digital media for playing fast and loose with the truth and others defending the media from further intrusion by the state. The debate is far from academic as its consequences have implications for freedom of expression, government regulation, and democratic accountability. To discuss the state of the Indian media in the year 2022, Milan is joined on the show this week by the journalist Manisha Pande. Manisha is the executive editor of Newslaundry, a well-regarded digital news site that is dedicated to covering the media ecosystem in India today. She is the host and producer of the Newslaundry show, TV Newsance, which offers a satirical look at television news in India. In addition to discussing the media controversy involving the Wire, Milan and Manisha discuss the business-media nexus, shrinking space for anti-government criticism, and the dangers of self-censorship. Plus, the duo discuss why the sorry state of prime-time news television refuses to change. “Mehrauli Murder Case and 'sansani' reporting,” TV Newsance 193, November 19, 2022.Manisha Pande, “Why we report on the media,” Newslaundry, June 25, 2022.Manisha Pande, “‘It's not a newsroom, it's a durbar': Inside the Republic of Arnab Goswami,” Newslaundry, September 7, 2020.

More than a year after the farmers' protests started, PM Narednra Modi recently announced that the three laws that had angered the farmers would be repealed. The farmers, on their part, have refused to budge, and will now intensify their agitation. They have faced accusations from BJP spokespersons of being Khalistanis and terroroists, but the farmers haven't budged. Many people have worked behind the scenes to ensure that the farmers' point-of-view is heard, especially in the media. One such person is Harinder Happy, himself the son of Dalit landless farmers in Rajasthan. He is currently Media Coordinator of the protests. What a week it has been for the news world. On one had Arnab Goswami's chats with former BARC chief Partho Das - got 'leaked' - exposing the rot and connections....on the other hand Nidhi Razdan made a sensational claim that she was the victim of a very systematic and prolonged Phishing attack. ON Saturday Night Livestream we take a look at both this cases and try to make some sense - connect some dots - but the message is clear. Trust no one blindly. India's police forces have long been under the direct control of state politicians, but the challenge of police politicisation is coming the fore increasingly in recent years. Instances of harm caused by the politicisation are apparent in the police handling of the Delhi Riots of 1984, the Gujarat riots of 2002 and the recent riots in N.E. Delhi. The police is trained to enforce the law impartially but that rarely happens in some states with powerful chief ministers. The recent case relating to the suicide of Sushant Singh Rajput and the arrest of anchor Arnab Goswami of the TV channel 'Republic’ are prime examples. In this podcast, Retired IPS Officer and Padma Bhushan awardee Julio Ribeiro in conversation with journalist and co-founder of The News Minute, Dhanya Rajendran, trace the course of this politicisation from Independence to the present day. This episode is an edited version of a live conversation on BIC Streams. BIC Talks is brought to you by the Bangalore International Centre. Visit the BIC website to learn more about the guest and for links, references and related readings.

Anand thinks the “split in political America is quite evident, and it will have a bearing on the next four years”. On the Bihar election results, Abhinandan talks about the possibility of caste being a “primary voting decision-making metric”, and Anand explains that the “consolidations in this election have been between two rival social coalitions”. Jayashree says, “It was interesting that an overwhelming number of women voted for the NDA.” She also thinks the media needs to “change its approach to election coverage”. Abhinandan then brings up press freedom and asks Joanna if we need to relook at freedom of speech. Joanna talks about the First Amendment in the US. On Arnab Goswami getting bail, she adds that was “surprised” when she saw the visuals of him being released from jail. Jayashree says it was a very “political” visual, and emphasises that in this particular incident, “he wasn’t targeted for his reporting or press freedom”. She adds that the law shows a “double standard” and that bail should be the norm. Abhinandan says, “The crowd that came for Arnab cannot be done without the backing of a large political party.” Anand says Goswami has branded himself as “part journalist, part showman, and part performer”. The discussion also spans political and religious conditioning, defining terrorism, what “abetment to suicide” means from a legal point of view, and a lot more.Tune in!Recommendations JoannaCrash Landing On YouJayashreeSoorarai PottruCollisionThe Last OneAnandBihar: A referendum on Nitish KumarHow Nitish Kumar returned to powerAbhinandanHacking the Perfect Auction See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I speak to Abhijit Iyer-Mitra and Kushal Mehra about the hypocrisy of the Liberal attack on Arnab Goswami. The same people that cry about the attack on Free Speech by Modi and the attack on journalists by Modi are now celebrating the attack on another fellow journalist. These leftists only care about free speech as long as they agree with it. We also discuss how the Modi government has handled the recent lockdown.
