Advanced certified freediver Bree Heaney has a simple yet emblematic life motto; Hunt, gather, grow and craft. This mantra is what propelled her into the daring world of freediving and other seemingly risky adventures. Many of her peers think freediving is a dangerous pastime, yet for Bree choosing an activity involving calculated risk, and a need to be entirely present and connected to herself and her environment, is effectively what saved her from living a life crippled by fear. Bree divulges that after experiencing severe anxiety as a child, then a few ‘failures' as a teenager, adventuring in the wilderness was the catalyst that gave her the confidence she needed to move through those fears. It also gave her courage to break through society's preconceived idea of what a successful life looks like for a female (working hard, earning money, getting married, having kids etc.), and now she lives on her own terms. Once she started spending more time in the ocean, she started to care more, and as you'll hear, she is a fantastic role model when it comes to living a sustainable lifestyle. As a self proclaimed shark advocate, we also talk about shark encounters and what life under the big blue can offer a curious human. We learn that one must be humble and prepared, when entering into Mother Nature's underwater realm. She explains the importance and power of breathwork and letting go of the ego, as there is a huge element of surrender involved with freediving. To finesse her underwater breathing skills she trains under the watchful eye of the reputable Nam Baldwin, who has coached the likes of world surfing champions Steph Gilmore and Mick Fanning. Bree has also learnt to dive and hunt underwater from one of the most successful freediving women in the world, Kimi Werner (aka Kimi Swimmy). My chat with Bree will hopefully give you the courage to go out and try something new, and also be #MovedByNature. Just over a year ago, we launched I Deserve This, a series all about the different ways we should be prioritizing ourselves, whether that's with time, travel, or money. A few days after launch, the U.S. went into lockdown and the idea of spending copious amounts on any of those things felt like a pipe dream as we all stayed home. But, over the summer, we quietly started the series back up, chatting with the likes of free diver Kimi Werner about finding time for herself at the bottom of the ocean and photojournalist Malin Fezehai on planning trips to fuel her creativity. This week, we're back in full force, speaking with Babba Rivera, the Swedish-Chilean founder of Ceremonia, a haircare line inspired by the Latinx community. Despite its horrors, 2020 was a big year for Babba: she bought a house, had a baby, and launched a brand. We chat with her about finding ways to celebrate those moments amid the pandemic, navigating identity and representation, taking trips close to home just for the hell of it, and feeling homesick through it all. The island celebrity with a huge following on Instagram talks about her many ocean adventures ― including swimming with a great white shark and freediving in the frigid waters of Antarctica, surrounded by glaciers! Wait’ll you hear about her local favorites, made with food she harvests herself from sea and land!
Amy Tan and her family took a road less travelled, and chose to live in the jungle surrounded by nature. For almost 10 years, they lived off-the-grid on a farm in the beautiful jungles of Lenggong, Perak, and ran Permaculture Perak, where they grew their own organic food, and also offered farm stays and apprenticeship programs. Their way of life was even featured on the National Geographic series called ‘Living Free with Kimi Werner.' A year ago though, Permaculture Perak was forced to shut, after a long dispute with the Perak State Development Corporation over the land they were living on. We chat with Amy, who is the co-founder of Permaculture Perak, to find out more about what triggered this eviction, and what she and her family have been working on this past year. On episode 58, we're keeping it wild with Kimi Werner. Kimi is a Hawaiian freediver, US National Spearfishing Champion, conservationist and founder of Keep Wild Co—a company that makes reusable utensil kits packaged in recycled surf competition banners. She's also a certified culinary chef and you can find tons of great recipes on her blog. She's an artist, writer, and purely inspirational spirit that we were so excited to chat with. Hear how Kimi first fell in love with freediving by following her father under the waves, what happened when her family's economic status shifted and how Kimi fell away from her passions for so long, how she rediscovered herself under the waves, and then in the pursuit of gold medals realized she had commoditized what made her feel most alive. We also discuss our connection with our food, Kimi's company Keep Wild Co, and learning not to panic in the face of fear. Enjoy the show and please, if you haven't already, subscribe and share the stoke with 5 of your friends! In today's conversation, Andy talks with Kimi Werner, the U.S. National Spearfishing Champion of 2008 who transformed her passion for discovery and the sea to inspire others and travel the world. Why is Andy releasing this episode on The Wedding Biz? Because it’s a very touching and courageous story, and ultimately deeply inspiring. Kimi’s story is about something all of us creatives, in the event industry, can resonate with, which is to fully trust our inner yearnings and choose how we want to express ourselves and how we want to experience this world in which we live. Kimi grew up in a family of six, in a small shack in a secluded area of Haiku, Maui, where her best friend was a pig named “Muddy.” She may not have had any close human friends beyond her family before she moved to a more traditional neighborhood at age seven, but Kimi always believed that as long as she could explore the wild natural world she would never feel alone. When she wasn't roaming free on land, Kimi was underwater. At age four, Kimi began to watch her father free dive and spearfish for food. Seeing firsthand how fresh food brought her friends and family together, Kimi discovered the joy of cooking creatively at a young age and later attained a degree in Culinary Arts. Throughout her time in Oahu, she actively pursued her love of painting by taking as many art classes as she could and, for nearly four years, became an art teacher. After quitting her teaching job in her mid-20s, Kimi re-discovered her own passion for spearfishing. The ocean had long been a source of sustenance, inspiration and adventure, and Kimi found herself longing for the life she once knew in nature. During this period of time, she trained on her own, honed her free diving skills, and started to be mentored by and work alongside elite professional spearfishers and free divers. As a result, Kimi can hold her breath for 4:45, and at free-dive to depths of 159 feet. Only a few years later, she became the U.S. National Spearfishing Champion—and then her art really began to sell. She soon started to win international competitions and gain multiple sponsorships; however, it wasn't all that much later that Kimi purposely left the professional world of competition and faced the biggest challenge of her life. During this period of time, she lost all her sponsorships and many friends in the industry. Her story of how she recovered is truly remarkable and profoundly inspiring. Kimi still pursues all of her passions, including being a sought-after speaker, though completely on her own terms now. Her daily life is a pure fusion of her talents, rooted in sustainability and geared toward a healthy future for our global community. This Interview was originally recorded for Andy’s other podcast, Extraordinary Ordinary People, also found at www.EOPeople.net.
The ocean has long been a source of sustenance, inspiration and adventure for Kimi Werner. And she is a big inspiration for me when it comes to my own love for water, freediving and spearfishing! As a young child growing up off the grid in an isolated part of coastal Maui, she floated behind her father as he freedove for her family's primary food source. Only later as an adult on Oahu did she understand the central role the ocean was to play in her life when she discovered her own passion for free diving. Kimi has gone on to become the United States National Spearfishing Champion, a certified culinary chef, an award winning artist and a sought after speaker. Her daily life is a pure fusion of her talents, rooted in sustainability and geared towards a healthy future for our global community. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What it was like to grow up with a father who freedove for her family's primary food source...5:00 -How to know which fish to eat and which fish are legal to shoot...17:15 -What Kimi's "fitness" routine look like for freediving and spearfishing...22:00 -Whether Kimi uses any special "biohacks" (e.g. hyperbaric oxygen, oxygen restrictions masks, etc.)...28:00 -Kimi's favorite fish and how she prepares them for consumption...36:00 -What really attracts sharks and other predators and how Kimi keeps them away...38:30 -Whether or not Kimi avoids foods like coffee and dairy in order to hold her breath for longer periods of time underwater...51:15 -Kimi's experience freediving in Antarctica...52:30 -Kimi's run-in with a great white shark...55:00 -And much more! Kimi’s Wild Idea: To practice sustainable hunting, spread the message about the importance of the ocean and make a living doing what she loves. If you’ve heard of Kimi Werner, you’ve probably seen the picture or video of her gracefully swimming along, holding onto the dorsal fin of a great white shark. Kimi is fearless, and she’s a force of nature. Growing up off grid in Hawaii, Kimi’s father taught her to free dive. She gave it up for years, then rediscovered it later in life and went on to become the national spearfishing champion, a chef, an award-winning artist, and sought-after speaker. Her work as an environmental advocate wasn’t always her goal, and her path has taken unexpected turns as she has built a career that combines many of her passions. Kimi is a great storyteller, and she has some amazing stories to share with us, like her famous encounter with one of the biggest predators of the ocean, the magic that took her on a trip to the Azores, and the fearlessness of standing up for herself in asking for equal pay. Her biggest lessons she wants to share though are the power of trusting your gut, and slowing down in order to speed up. Listen to this episode if: You love the ocean. You are interested in spearfishing. You believe in equal pay and equal rights. You want to learn to free dive. You’re passionate about saving the ocean. You believe in magic.
