Sparty, the mascot for Michigan State University, is perhaps the most well-know mascot in sports today. To be that famous, you need a whole team to support you. And Michigan State has the first mascot sports medicine program in the country. On our show today is Sue Petrisin, director of the Sparty Mascot Program and Ashley Tripplett, Spartry's research coordinator. Why does Sparty have a research coordinator? Because Sparty has a sports medicine team around him doing ground-breaking research on the physical demands of the job. Sue and Ashley talk all things Sparty, the good, bad, and just plain funny. But they also share their research they presented at the American College of Sports Medicine, gained from internal and external monitoring of Sparty's health and wellness. They also share their hopes to spur more colleges to follow their lead into developing mascot sports medicine programs. For scheduling Sparty for an event, go to https://alumni.msu.edu/sparty/appearance-request.cfmFor more about the history of Sparty, go to https://alumni.msu.edu/sparty/history.cfmInstagram: @therealspartyBios:Sue Petrisin is the Director of the Sparty Mascot Program at Michigan State University, a program under the MSU Alumni Office. Sue holds a master's degree in labor relations and human resources, along with bachelor's degrees in food science and dietetics, all from Michigan State University. An MSU employee for 39 years, she spent 29 years in the Division of Residence Education and Housing Services (formerly Housing and Food Services).Sue joined the MSU Alumni Office, overseeing university programs such as Homecoming, Alumni Travel, Alumni Grand Awards, and Grandparents University before being assigned responsibility for the Sparty Mascot Program in 2014. As the demands of managing the Sparty Mascot Program grew, her other program responsibilities were reassigned to other staff members. After spending time watching Sparty in action and evaluating the program's operations, she identified several areas that needed improvement. These included the condition of the suit, the selection and training processes, Sparty's presence at events – both on- and off-campus, whether university or private - and his public perception among public, alumni and university faculty, staff and students.Recognizing there was health impact on the student performing as Sparty, Sue sought assistance to help others understand what these students experienced and the need for additional support and focus for the program. This led to a research project with the Michigan State University Department of Kinesiology. The health and safety of our students is always priority one. We have established policies and procedures that guide our program.Sue is joined by Assistant Director Jill Wesley in managing the Sparty Mascot Program, one of the most recognized mascots in the world.Ashley Triplett is the Research Coordinator for the Sparty Mascot Program at Michigan State University. She has been working with the program since 2019 to better understand physiological responses of individuals serving as mascots and improve the health and safety of students participating in the Sparty Mascot Program. Ashley completed her PhD in Kinesiology at Michigan State University in 2021. She also earned her M.S. in Kinesiology and B.S. degrees in Kinesiology and Human Biology at Michigan State University.

In this week's episode, both of our storytellers discover shocking truths through genetic analysis. Part 1: When Mackenzie Brown's adoptive father passes away suddenly from a heart condition, she is determined to find out what genes she did inherit. Part 2: Martha Buford Reiskind thought the case of her mom's murder was closed when no DNA match came up for the single piece of hair left at the scene. Mackenzie Brown grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina and graduated with a Masters of Public Health from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Her graduate research focused on understanding how depressive symptoms impact disease management strategies in people with hypertension in the rural South. After a year of collecting data across the country as a Research Fellow with Stanford University, she moved to New York and worked as a Research Coordinator conducting behavioral interventions for individuals with rheumatic diseases. Now at DAC, she is interested in pursuing a PhD to explore how early birth trauma and premature birth can impact mental health across the lifespan. Martha Buford Reiskind started her undergraduate career as a theater arts and music major at a small liberal arts school in Bronxville NY, Sarah Lawrence College. At the time there were only 1,200 students and it had only recently become a coed school. After several years in what she likes to call her Liberal Arts Tour, she finished up her undergraduate work at University of California Berkeley, in Integrative Sciences. She started her Faculty Position at NC State in 2012 and conducts research in conservation genetics and teaches courses in population genetics, conservation science, science communication and science ethics. She is also a sister, daughter, wife, auntie, and mother and love those roles as much as the research and teaching she does. She directs a first-year graduate training program at NC State, the Genetics & Genomics Scholars program, and graduate training and education is one of her passions. She seeks out opportunities to combine the arts and sciences and help her students develop effective science communication, both visual and oral. Send us a Text Message.Today we're taking a step back from the personal stories we've been hearing to get some perspective on migration and Nepal. Specifically, we're talking about women who leave the country to work, including why a ban on them migrating as domestic workers is not a good idea. We'll also hear – and this is the idea that jolted my brain during the interview – why we need to share positive news about women's migration. My guest today, in the Himal Media studio in Patan Dhoka, is Sadikshya Bhattarai, Research Coordinator at the Centre for the Study of Labour and Mobility, aka CESLAM, at Social Science Baha here in Kathmandu. During our chat, Sadikshya does a great job of sketching the history of women migrating for work until today. She then details how the ban on women working as domestics in Gulf countries has evolved, and why it should end. But this isn't a single-focus discussion—Sadikshya also notes the many initiatives that the three levels of government and their partners have taken to try and improve the system, but concludes that they're just not working as intended. Join us for a heartfelt and insightful conversation with Katherine Velez, a compassionate Veterinary Social Worker at Cornell Veterinary Specialists in Stamford CT, as she shares her experiences and wisdom in navigating the delicate journey of pet loss, quality of life assessments, and the importance of self-care in veterinary medicine. From comforting grieving pet owners to making difficult euthanasia decisions, Catherine sheds light on the emotional depth and professional challenges faced in veterinary practice. Discover the power of empathy, the role of humor in coping, and the profound impact of veterinary care on both animals and their human companions. Katherine Velez received her B.A. in HDFS with a minor in Women Studies in Spring of 2010. She was involved in Zero Tolerance, a student activities organization and participated in the production of The Vagina Monologues. During her time at UCONN, she completed an internship at St. Luke's Lifeworks (now Inspirica), working at their women's shelter. She also participated in a mentorship program with middle school children through the Stamford Public Education Foundation. This experience helped cement her interest in working with vulnerable populations and encouraged her to think about plans for after graduation. Her advisor, Dr. Annamaria Csizmadia, and professors were integral and supportive of her decision to pursue a social work master's degree. After graduation, Katherine earned her master's in social work with a clinical concentration from Fordham University. During her time at Fordham, she started working as a case worker at a local nonprofit, Person to Person, providing emergency assistance programs part time. She completed an internship with the White Plains Youth Bureau where she developed an after-work program for at risk youth in an immigrant community. She also completed her clinical internship at Norwalk Community Health Center where she provided individual psychotherapy to clinic patients. Upon completing her MSW, she started working full time for Person to Person and was promoted to Case Work Manager as the organization grew and branched out to a bigger catchment area. In 2016, Katherine began working as a Research Coordinator at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) in the Pediatrics Department. She had the privilege of working in several clinical trials within her department, including working with mothers and children in the NICU at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital and running mother-child groups in preschool settings. At CUMC, she earned the required hours toward her clinical license and is now a fully licensed social worker in the state of CT. Today, Katherine is the Veterinary Social Worker at Cornell Veterinary Specialists in Stamford CT where she works with clients and supports staff in the day-to-day human issues that arise within the veterinary field and the human-animal bond. She is also in private practice. Katherine's time at UConn helped her realize her goals of becoming a social worker. The staff and professors she met along the way forever impacted her life and the trajectory of it. It is because of these relationships that she was able to succeed and was prepared to pursue a master's degree. She will forever hold the UConn community in her heart and is grateful for her time in the HDFS program. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/speakingofpets/message

Dr. Edmond ("Ed") Dugas, Research Coordinator for the Athletic Network at UL – Lafayette, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss his career at UL - Lafayette and his lifelong dedication to athletics at the institution. In 2002, Ed was the driving force behind creation of the Athletic Network ("AN"), which showcases athletes/sports in UL's past. Mike Spears of Firefly Digital developed the website. AN provides an historical and educational clearinghouse of information about Louisiana athletics and the University spanning over 110 years. It also serves as a communications database for former athletes, support groups, faculty, administration and fans. Ed and his son, John Dugas, are volunteers who personally enter the data and take responsibility for accuracy of the site's materials. It is truly a labor of love and devotion to UL - Lafayette sports! Ed is a native of Evergreen LA (located between Bunkie and Cottonport). A graduate of Evergreen High School, Ed had intended to enter the Air Force Academy but his plans were short-circuited by health issues relating to his inner ears. Luckily, the Principal of his Evergreen High School was close friends and the college roommate with SLI (now UL - Lafayette) President Joel Fletcher, who convinced Ed that he should attend college in Lafayette. And as they say....the rest is history. When Ed started college in 1958, UL Lafayette was then known as South Louisiana Institute or "SLI." Its original name was SLII (South Louisiana Industrial Institute). In 1960, the university was renamed to USL, an acronym for University of Southwestern Louisiana, and an endeavor in which Ed was actively engaged. (The university was renamed to University of Louisiana at Lafayette in September 1999. Ed joking says that "We change our name every 39 years." Governor Mike Foster signing legislation renaming USL to University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Ed looks back upon his time at USL with fondness and shares how student workers worked hard, up to 100 hours per month, for the sum of $40 per month, while they still had to pay $16 per month to cover room and board! But the experience was invaluable and Ed taught tennis and coached basketball as he worked with Dave Fisher. Ed went on to graduate from USL in August 1962 and was mentored by USL's late, great basketball coach, Dutch Reinhardt. He earned a Masters and Doctorate in Physical Education and Education Administration. He looks back with admiration of the talented staff he worked with, including Dr. David Fisher, Fred Nelson, Clyde Wolf, Dr. Jim Kennison, and Al Simon. Ed served on the UL faculty in a variety of positions and ranks from 1967 until he retired in 2001. Administratively, he served in the following positions at USL: Coordinator, Men's Physical Education; Coordinator, Graduate Studies for the College of Education; Head, Department of Health and Physical Education; and Director of Student Teaching. He was the first Executive Director of the Louisiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. In 1988, Ed was one of three graduates selected as “Outstanding Graduates” from the USL College of Education in their 25th year after their graduation date. In 2001, he was awarded the Professor Emeritus title at UL -Lafayette. Dr. Ed Dugas pictured in red jacket with the first officers of the new College of Education Alumni Chapter, with Dr. Ray Authement on far right. As you'll hear during this interview, Ed has been anything but a retiree in the past twenty years. Ed's life has been defined by athletics, both in teaching and reporting on the athletic history of UL – Lafayette through the Athletic Network, which provides a place for former University athletes and fans to connect and join support teams for their favorite sports. After a two-year hiatus, the Athletic Network went live again on December 13, 2023 thanks to a significant donation made to the Athletic Network by Edmond “Bruce”...

After actress and eco-activist Daryl Hannah shared a groundbreaking announcement on behalf of the Mattel Corporation, the company behind Barbie dolls, Citizens Climate Radio host spoke with Daryl about this big bold move.  Earlier this month at Los Angeles press conference, Daryl announced that Mattel has committed to going 100% plastic-free by 2030 and aims to support a global ban on plastics. To celebrate this important shift in toy production, Mattel will release a line of fully biodegradable Eco-Warrior Barbies, including one made in Daryl Hannah's likeness.  She shared some of the details with us, “I have a few accessories. Well I have a mermaid tail so I can do my work in the ocean. I have a monkey wrench. I have some handcuffs but actually I used chains when I changed myself to a tree at the South Central farm. I have a snorkel so I can also you know go and check out under the ocean. I have a few more toys but I definitely have a few non plastic biodegradable tools.”  If this story sounds too good to be true, it is because it is. It was all a hoax orchestrated by the fictional Barbie Liberation Organization (BLO). The real people behind this political satire is the infamous Yes Men, who for decades have fooled the press and public with their elaborate stunts. While Mattel did announce it has begun shifting its production of Barbie dolls to include recycled plastics and even unveiled Barbie Loves the Ocean; Its First Fashion Doll Collection Made from Recycled Ocean-Bound Plastic with more sustainable packaging, the BLO is trying to get us to envision a world where we find cleaner alternatives to plastics.  In 1993 the BLO infamously swapped the voice boxes of Barbie dolls with GI Joe voices and returned the dolls to store shelves as a form of cultural protest. This time, they're tackling plastic pollution with a playful spoof involving eco-friendly Barbie dolls. The fake news story made national news with pieces in the LA Times, NY Times, and CBS News.  Learn more about the Barbie Liberation Organization and watch the spoof TV commercial for the new Eco-Warrior Barbies Take a Meaningful Next Step Each month we will suggest meaningful, achievable, and measurable next steps for you to consider. The oral microbiome has been recently classified as a “gateway” microbiome, giving it immense importance in total body health. The placental microbiome is another gateway microbiome- it sets the immune system of the developing child- and is extremely important since it's closely related in microbial content to the oral microbiome! But what creates a dysbiotic oral microbiome? My guest today is Mark L. Cannon. He is a Professor of Otolaryngology- Division of Dentistry at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, an Attending Physician at Ann and Robert Lurie Children's Hospital, and a member of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry. In addition to being the founder of Associated Dental Specialists of Long Grove (1981); he is the Research Coordinator of the Pediatric Dental residency program at Ann and Robert Lurie Children's Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Cannon has 40 years of experience in pediatric dentistry and has presented lectures both nationally and internationally. He lectures on many oral health topics including evolutionary oral medicine, the gateway microbiomes, biologic and bioactive dental materials (patents owner), probiotics, and all aspects of everyday Pediatric oral health. Dr. Cannon has humbly accepted two invitations by the Karolinska Institutet, first to the Nobel Forum (2016) and secondly to the Nobel Assembly (2017). Most of all, Dr. Cannon is the proud father of five, all of whom are very accomplished. He is also a very proud grandfather! Do you have issues with both the skin and your dental health? Have you considered tackling the mouth issues first? Let me know in the comments! In this episode: What is a "gateway microbiome"? Why missing THESE bacteria from your mouth microbiome is problematic List of diseases + health issues associated with a messed up oral microbiome What bacteria like P. gingivalis can INSIDE of your cells Is xylitol helpful for oral microbiome health? Strep salivarius VS. Strep mutans Quotes "Half the population has their gut controlled by the mouth. If you have leaky gut, you have leaky gums, leaky blood-brain barrier... And before you know it, problems with the skin, which is what we've seen in so many studies. You'll find a lot of studies showing that with every skin disorder, there's an associated gut microbiome problem" [06:07] "It was a very, very powerful multi-center study... And they significantly reduced preterm birth by having the moms chewing xylitol gum. I mean, the savings and healthcare dollars are huge, but again, you're working on a gateway microbiome and you're inhibiting a keystone pathogen."
