MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Feb 1st Publish Date: Jan 31st Commercial: From the Drake Realty Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, February 1st, and Happy heavenly Birthday to entertainer Rick James. ***02.01.24 – BIRTHDAY – RICK JAMES*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Kennesaw City Council Member Steps Down Prior to DUI Hearing Governor Kemp Ratifies New Layout for Cobb School Board Jobless Rate in Cobb Experiences a Decline Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss cross contact contamination. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Kennesaw Councilman Resigns Hours Before DUI Arraignment Robert "Trey" Sinclair, a member of the Kennesaw City Council, stepped down unexpectedly ahead of his arraignment on charges of drunk driving and hit-and-run. The charges stem from an incident in June. Sinclair attributed his resignation to a planned move outside the city limits at month's end. Fellow council members expressed surprise at Sinclair's departure, with some speculating about the timing given the upcoming court proceedings. The June incident resulted in a three-car pileup, and Sinclair is accused of leaving the scene. He also faces additional legal challenges, including a lawsuit from Fifth Third Bank and the closure of his brewery. City officials are now working to set dates for a special election to fill the vacant council seat. STORY 2: Gov. Kemp Signs New Cobb School Board Map into Law Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has signed into law a new map for the Cobb County Board of Education, redrawing district lines as proposed by state Sen. Ed Setzler. The move follows a December ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Eleanor Ross that invalidated the previous map due to claims of racial gerrymandering. Setzler's map, intended to comply with Ross' order, will be in effect for upcoming elections. Despite protests from organizations such as the Georgia Youth Justice Coalition, Setzler stands by the map, asserting it adheres to the court's directive and represents the community's interests. STORY 3: Unemployment rate drops in Cobb Cobb County reported a preliminary unemployment rate of 2.6% in December, a decrease from November's 2.8%, but a slight uptick from the 2.4% recorded in December 2022. The labor force saw a reduction of 1,919 between November and December, with 430,543 individuals employed and 11,357 unemployed out of a total of 441,900 members. Despite the year-over-year increase in the jobless rate, the county saw an employment boost of more than 6,700 people from December 2022 to December 2023. Local cities Marietta and Smyrna also experienced varied unemployment rates, with December figures standing at 2.5% and 2.9% respectively. Compared to the Atlanta metro area and the state of Georgia, the county's jobless rates remain relatively low. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Break: Drake STORY 4: Mableton Council Raises Concerns About Mayoral Power Grab Members of the Mableton City Council have voiced concerns over a proposal by Mayor Michael Owens to form mayoral committees that would report directly to him, arguing it could undermine the council's authority. Owens' proposed resolution aimed to set up committees for various initiatives, with the mayor selecting members and chairpersons. Council members countered that this method contradicts the city charter, which outlines the council's responsibility in committee appointments. Owens explained that these committees would serve in an advisory capacity without decision-making authority. Despite his reassurances, council members called for revisions to ensure compliance with the city charter, stressing the importance of transparency and adherence to proper procedures in forming committees. The resolution has been set aside for further review. STORY 5: Chattahoochee Tech Announces 2024 Top Student and Instructor Chattahoochee Technical College has named its top student and instructor for 2024. Kristin Lee, an occupational therapy assistant program student, was awarded the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership, which acknowledges academic and leadership excellence. Natalia Meneses, a political science instructor at the college, received the Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Education, which honors outstanding teaching. Both Lee and Meneses will compete in the Technical College System of Georgia's regional competitions. Regional winners will then advance to the state level. In addition, the college recognized Karina Moyado Montoya as the recipient of the Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education award for 2024. We'll be back in a moment. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! The Bellaire House sits on a Leyline - that implies there is a consistent wellspring of paranormal vitality that goes all through the house. Behind the house is a Native American internment area. Before the house is the Ohio River, some dark spirits have been removed, and more return time and time again. There is a child, Emily Davis, inside the Bellaire House. She used to play at the Bellaire House when she was a kid. Through research, Rebecca Stamm-Gardner and Kristin Lee discovered a second Emily Davis. The Bellaire House appears to dependably pull in individuals who have a similar first and last name arrangement. One Emily Davis was known to have suffocated, and another Emily Davis was known as a dear companion to the first proprietor of the land. Emily likes to talk through EVPs and on the Ghost Box. She jumps at the chance to illuminate the "beautiful hues " of the K2 meter. In 2005, Kristin Lee was affected by two floods, which left her family homeless. Soon after they moved in, they saw "odd" things. Kristin Lee faulted everything except for the paranormal until the point when one night, as she lay in bed, she was assaulted, and her dog was tossed against the wall. By then, Kristin Lee had connected with Ohio Valley Paranormal Research Investigations. Today, we hear the story of the Bellaire House.
