This type of barking and lunging at the presence of another dog, person, biker, or skateboarder is the most common kind of reactivity, but the behaviour can include other types of over-arousal, including spinning/tail-chasing or urination/defecation. Today's Topic: In the first part of our 2-part series on Leash Reactivity, we discussed a whole host of topics with certified professional dog trainer, the founder of Perfect Pals Dog Training, and the co-creator of the most comprehensive digital dog training course on the subject, "Help! My Dog Is Reactive On Leash!", Erin Gianella, including how common leash reactivity is, how it's different than general reactivity, what a dog wants when they are reacting, distance-increasing behaviors vs. distance-decreasing behaviors, being proactive vs. reactive, and perhaps most importantly, some management strategies people can use to prevent their dog's practicing of unwanted reactive behaviors, such as whining, growling, barking, lunging, etc. In today's episode, we go a bit deeper and discuss alternative behaviors you can teach your dog, how training can differ if you've discovered that your dog is wanting to increase distance from vs. decrease distance to the trigger, what counterconditioning and desensitization are, whether a dog can be "cured" of leash reactivity, and much much more!Guest Bio: Erin Gianella's journey to become a dog trainer began in 2014 when she noticed her own dog, Gus, having separation anxiety issues. She became more and more curious and passionate that she decided to leave the corporate world and learn as much as she could about being a dog trainer. So many people are struggling with leash reactivity, let's start down the journey of eliminating that.
Are you a dog mom who struggles with leash reactivity? Kathy knows how stressful it is when you have a dog that pulls hard on the leash. Having a dog that is lunging toward (or away from) other dogs, moving objects, or anything that triggers them is not a pleasant experience for anyone. In this episode of Enlightened by Dogs, Kathy shares a real-life coaching call with a dog mom who was struggling with leash reactivity. Her in-depth explanation of the process of walking as partners with your dog during this coaching session is going to change things with you and your dog! There are specific things that you can do when your dog becomes reactive on the leash that will lead to walking as partners. One of the important things is to make an intentional choice about when and where to walk your reactive dog so that you are likely to have a great walk. Creating what Kathy calls “Green Zone Experiences” is what will help you and your dog to finally break free of the leash reactivity spiral that you are stuck in together. To learn more about how, tune in! In this episode: A real-life coaching call with a dog mom Steps to the process of walking as partners with your dog Strategies on how to deal with the leash reactivity of your dog Quotes: There are a lot of moving parts to learning how to walk as partners with our dogs. And we make so many mistakes, but we don't even realize we're making mistakes. The more green zone experiences we create, the more competent we get at staying really connected with our dog while we are walking together. The earlier we notice first signs that our dog is starting to get uncomfortable or triggered by something, the more effective it is to keep our dogs and us in the green zone. Reactive behavior on leash goes far beyond what occurs outside when you walk your dog. Your dog's reaction to things inside the home only reinforces what occurs outside of the home. Learn how to manage your dogs behavior to help minimize reactivity.
Visit us at shapedbydog.com Help, how can I stop my dog barking in the car while I'm driving!? That's one of the most common questions we receive, and it's a dilemma as you can't drive and train your dog at the same time. But you can fix it! It starts with knowing why a dog is barking in the first place. It could be fear, excitement, anticipation, or maybe the dog is triggered by what they see out the car window. In the episode you'll hear: • All the reasons a dog might be barking while you are driving. • How a video can help you diagnose why your dog barks. • About using management for dogs who bark in cars. • The reason to narrow down what might be triggering your dog's barking. • How eliminating rehearsals of the undesired behaviour is vital. • What to do if you have two or more dogs barking while you are travelling in the car. • That sometimes limiting your dog's view out the windows can eliminate barking. • Why to reinforce your dog for being quiet when in the car and ways you can set that up. • About using negative punishment when there is a history of rich reinforcement for that which is correct. • The strategy of stopping the car when your dog is barking in anticipation. • Why you need to counter condition and desensitize your dog first. • What to do if your dog is triggered by something when they are in the car. • How to help a dog who gets overexcited about car trips and going places in the car. • All the progressions to stopping your dog barking when you are driving. • That barking is a conditioned behaviour and not a conscious response by your dog. Visit us at shapedbydog.com Does balanced dog training really exist? Being a balanced trainer is part of my background in dog training. In many discussions about dog training methods, you will frequently hear about the four quadrants, so I'm going over what those quadrants are and how our experiences can tip the balance. We're covering the science of operant conditioning and how dogs actively learn. In the episode you'll hear: • How I started to learn about dog training from a book called “How to Raise and Train a Chow Chow”. • About the four quadrants and the meaning of +R, +P, -P and -R. • An explanation of the terms Positive Reinforcement, Positive Punishment, Negative Punishment and Negative Reinforcement. • The importance of understanding that punishment suppresses behavior. • How the key with positive reinforcement is that only the dog knows what is reinforcing. • Examples of using the four quadrants in dog training, and how we really want to optimize positive reinforcement. • The reason why no dog trainer is truly balanced. • The decision I made in 1993 only to use positive reinforcement and what I learned. • How our core values, education, curiosity, mentorship, and peer group impact our dog training. • About what pressure and frustration can do to our dog training decisions. • The most valuable lesson I learned from Feature when she was a puppy, and when I realized I'd come the full circle in my dog training. So, your dog is reactive and you're really stressing that Dog-To-Dog portion of the test on the Canine Good Citizen. You are not alone. Whether your dog is excited about other dogs or just weary, almost everyone preparing for the CGC wants to know: how do I teach my dog to keep it together when in close proximity with a stranger and their dog? After years of administering the CGC test and preparing aspiring therapy dog teams for the real world of classrooms and hospitals, Crystal has your back on this one. In this episode, she covers where to get started with treating dog reactivity, what classes to look for while preparing for the CGC, and what unsuspecting part of the test fails people the most. Hint: it's not the dog-to-dog portion.Continue ReadingThe Dreaded Dog-To-Dog CGC Test

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Has your dog ever experienced barrier frustration? The frustration can escalate to aggression, and something like fence running can turn into fence fighting. The leash being on a dog can result in restraint frustration as the lead creates a barrier. Or perhaps your dog barks at other dogs when in the car? When our dogs are frustrated, they are expressing an emotion and we cannot ignore their excitement or anxiety. We can help our dog by creating a different emotional response. In the episode you'll hear: • About noticing the early signs of anxiety or frustration. • How fence running can quickly escalate to fighting. • Why arousal can turn to redlining and why we should care. • What we don’t want our dogs to rehearse. • How fence fighting can have consequences away from the barrier. • Being aware of everyone’s safety around dogs who have pent up emotion. • Why a redlining dog could redirect onto another dog, child, or adult. • The easiest way to stop barrier aggression. • Why to focus on the trigger to help dogs with their emotional response. • How to change your dog’s emotional state around triggers. • Strategies to help fence fighting dogs. • Why management is a big part of dog training to prevent rehearsals. • How using a head halter will help you keep your dog under threshold. • The reason to use distance to help your dog with triggers. • Games you can play that will help overcome barrier frustration. • Why the words “Winners Circle!” come with treats for your dog. • How to achieve the goal of your dog seeing a trigger and orientating to you. This ep. is all about reading and understanding our dogs, respecting their needs, and adapting to their personalities and they grow and change. Liz Murdoch is an animal communicator with a passion for helping people bond and understand their pet on a whole new level. This is a great chat full of surprising tidbits of info.I follow this with three examples of feedback I received from the challenge from last month's ep. (inserting command based exercises on a leash walk that require your feet to move when the dog does not, and unteaching the Sit command). This leads to some surprising results for two dogs with different kinds of anxiety and one silly dog! I then use a client example to show the benefits of providing dogs with options. By pre-determining the end goal, we often limit the ability for dogs to overcome fears and prevent ourselves from enjoying the company of our dog. UPWARD Dogology allows us to provide skills to read the dog, adapt to individual dogs' personalities and progress as the dog progresses. One of the most important approaches of UPWARD Dogology is "Never rush to your end goal". Sound obvious? In this episode I use the example of working with an aggressive dog to show how trainers commonly focus on the dog liking them or using treats to increase comfort, which can cause increased frustration for both the dog and their human.Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! With the increased popularity of Balanced Training, corrections is a hot topic in the behavioral world. Rewards are the basis of Positive Reinforcement Training. Because of this focus on rewards and corrections, many trainers and behaviourists are "missing the forest for the trees". Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which UPWARD Dogology is grounded in, uses rewards to establish the platform, but is not dependent on rewards or correction to change perception and in turn change behaviour. Is one method better that the other? Well, that depends on many factors. For a deeper look into these topics and methods, please check out the episodes in seasons 1 and 3. This podcast series is an ever-advancing learning journey that broadens the mind and changes the way we view working with dogs. Enjoy your learning journey! This episode details the results of the studies of counter-conditioning with her clients (previous episode). Billie describes how dogs react differently to mental positive stimuli (exercises) than to that of a physical positive stimuli (toy or treat) and how we can tell if we have "reached the cognitive side of the dog's brain". She uses a client example to show how addressing leash reactivity with dogs who are friendly with dogs acts as a "platform builder" to address aggression toward people. This podcast series is an ever-advancing learning journey that broadens the mind and changes the way we view working with dogs. Counter Conditioning is an evidence based method, proven to change behaviors grounded in aggression and anxiety. How we have adapted counter conditioning to address aggression and anxiety in dogs has taken some interesting turns. Billie refers to the advice provided by the American Kennel Club and the Animal Humane Society, trainers/behaviourists, and her own research based on hundreds of clients per year for decades to dive deep into what exactly counter conditioning is and why it is effective - or not. This episode also explains what evidence based and scientifically proven methods are. This is the first part of a 2 part series in the 3rd Season. UPWARD Dogology episodes contain a Learning Journey and a SnipPet. The Journey describes the process, challenges and successes with a client and their dog. The SnipPets are tidbits of info, tips, “what's trending”, opinions and advice from experts on anything and everything dog related. Learning Journey: In this episode, Billie introduces us to Kelvin and his dog, Zeus. Zeus is nervous of new people coming into the home or on walks if they pay too much attention to him. And then, due to an incident, afraid to go on neighborhood walks. The SnipPet Piece is a true or false segment, that touches on three topics 1) are emaciated dogs, when homed, more likely to be in need of impulse control training than other rescued dogs? 2) Is the honey-moon period a myth? 3) How effective is the gentle leader? In this Learning Journey, Billie introduces us to Dana and Leslie with their adopted dog, Sasha, who has been returned to the rescue organization twice. Although she "ticks all the boxes" of a great family pet, she has annoying habits. The SnipPet Piece uses a human example to explain how perception, in conjunction with choices, influences a dog's behavior. Can we change that behaviour? Praise? Treats? Positive Reinforcements? Positive Correction/Punishment? These are reactive in nature and grounded in Operant Conditioning (confused? take a listen to the earlier episodes in this 4 part mini-series) . It is time to learn how to establish the platform, what teaching opportunities are, why opportunity driven rewards are different, and why transferable skills are essential. Learn the core tools of UPWARD Dogology and how they all work together to reach the cognitive side of the brain and effectively work with dogs. This final episode of the 4 part mini-series provides examples and information that change the way you view working with your dog and explains why UPWARD Dogology has saved the sanity of hundreds of people and the lives of thousands of dogs.Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! We all know dogs can think and process and that 6 months is a common age for change in behaviours to occur. But why? And how do we address these changes? More restraints, gimmicks, toys, negative reinforcements? Nope - we need to harness the cognitive side of the brain, just like we do with children when they turn 4. Find out what that means for dogs.Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! Are you frustrated by the methods commonly recommended by the experts (and the coffee-shop advice provided on social media)? Ripping your hair out because you know your dog is good, but he is flipping-you-the-bird? Wondering why your dog loves treats, but still bites or hides or lunges or jumps or has a complete meltdown when another dog goes by your front window (a.k.a. "dog tv")? You are not alone! Positive Reinforcement Training is half of Operant Conditioning,, which is scientifically proven effective, so why is it limiting? Well, the short answer is one-half of a scientifically proven methodology is simply that.... one half. Is including Negative Reinforcement the answer? No! We cannot realistically expect it to address the needs of all dogs with one method. As with people, and in particular with children, we need to adapt the way we parent, or pawrent, to suit their needs and the reason for the behavior.Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! To avoid that "deer-in-the-headlights-look" as you venture through the mini-series, it is a good idea to hear how Billie's learning journey lead to the creation of UPWARD Dogology. This is not your average learning journey - no certifications, no set game plan, and no rules. Why no certifications? Because all the certifications are for positive reinforcement trainers, and Billie is not that!
