Episode Title: A Day in the Life of a Dog TrainerIntroductionI (Marc) discuss the daily challenges and rewards of being a dog trainer. My son, Michael Windgassen, joins me to share insights from our experiences with high-drive dogs.Ninja, the German ShepherdNinja could sense when we were waking up by our heartbeat and would be ready to work before we were even fully conscious. His drive was constant—always ready to work, no matter the time of day or how tired we were.Living with Ninja was intense, as he was always focused on his "job," which sometimes made day-to-day living exhausting. He had an incredible balance—able to switch between relaxation and immediate action when needed.Ninja excelled at obedience, protection, and narcotics detection, and could be switched on and off like a remote.Elena, the RottweilerElena is described as a Malinois in a Rottweiler's body, with an extreme drive that is unmatched. She works relentlessly, to the point of exhaustion, often needing to be crated to calm down.Elena's drive makes her the embodiment of a working dog, always needing mental and physical stimulation.Managing High-Drive DogsHigh-drive dogs require constant engagement, and their energy levels are difficult to manage for average dog owners. These dogs will demand attention, often interrupting attempts to relax or rest.Owning a working dog requires full dedication, as these dogs won't allow downtime without work or play.Force, the RottweilerForce has a distinct off-switch, which allows him to calm down when needed, unlike Elena. He's still incredibly driven during work sessions but is more manageable at home.Challenges of Owning a Working DogMany clients get overwhelmed after adopting a working-line breed without understanding their needs. These dogs will create their own tasks if not given proper mental and physical outlets, often leading to destructive behaviors.Owning a working dog is not for everyone—it requires a strong commitment to constantly work with the dog to avoid issues. The Bond with High-Drive DogsThe bond between a trainer and a high-drive dog is incomparable to that with a pet dog.Working with these dogs creates a deeper, more rewarding connection because of the constant interaction and shared purpose.Once you experience the drive and bond of a working dog, it's hard to go back to owning low-drive dogs.Final ThoughtsWorking dogs, while extremely rewarding, are not suited for every household. They require someone who understands their needs and is prepared to manage their high-energy, driven nature. The joy of seeing a high-drive dog perform and excel at their tasks is unmatched, but it comes with significant challenges.

Last month, I took Hazel to detection training school in Canada. I did it because Hazel is a working dog. A Belgian Malinois. Belgians are the most agile, heroic, and (potentially) lethal dog breed on the planet. That's why law enforcement agencies use them as detection and apprehension dogs. Hazel was too small and too sweet to officially work for law enforcement, which is one reason I decided to adopt her. But she's still a Malinois, and she's not built to be a family pet... Which is why I signed us up for detection training school...so I better understood how to give her what SHE needs, as a Malinois. The detection class itself was really fun, but going to Canada was an expensive, exhausting pain in the butt in pretty much every way. Seriously, there were plenty of reasons NOT to go...like the money (I spent thousands of dollars on the class, the travel, and the Airbnb I stayed at), like being gone from home for too long, and like having to get up at 4 AM to get my work done before the class started. But I did it all anyway, and even though it really kicked my butt, I'm SO glad I did it. Why? Because I might not get the chance again. What if the training company shuts down? What if the world situation changed, and I couldn't fly to Canada? What if my schedule got even fuller, and it got even MORE inconvenient to make the time? I get how easy it is to justify postponing stuff because you assume you'll get another chance. But as I share in this week podcast episode, one day you WON'T have the chance. Tomorrow is not promised. And if you keep waiting for "one day," you may "one day" yourself into missing out entirely...including the chance to be healthy, slim, and strong. Visit us at shapedbydog.com    Social media sensation and protection dog trainer Matt Folsom of Modern Malinois, joins me to chat about dog training. Matt is a skilled trainer dedicated to continual growth and uses luring to achieve brilliant results. Although we approach dog training with different methods for different reasons, including how our minds work, we have mutual respect and a lot in common in the way we create a great relationship with dogs and use the things individual dogs love as reinforcers. Enjoy this extract from our livestream celebrating 200 episodes of Shaped by Dog.   In the episode you'll hear:   • Why I want you to meet my friend Matt Folsom of Modern Malinois, master protection dog trainer. • How Matt's autism and my dyslexia influence our approaches to dog training, including luring vs. shaping. • The difference between Matt's luring mastery compared to typical luring and how he fades the lure. • Matt's philosophy on raising puppies, including why he does not want a professional puppy but a professionally trained adult dog. • Our shared philosophy on relationship first and using what a dog loves most to create brilliant behavior. • Why to push the boundaries when training dogs for their benefit. • About Matt's commitment to continually improving dog training and leaving tools like prong collars behind. • Insight on a training game that makes people say WOW and how it creates a dopamine release for dogs.   Catch the 200 Episodes Celebration Replay and After Party Opportunities Click Here for the Livestream Replay, PDF Downloads and Special Online Program Opportunities - https://dogsthat.com/sbd-celebrate-episode-200/   Resources:   1. Police dog stories always interest me, and hone you have access to a guy like Steve "Zane" Stoops there are no shortage. I often refer to Steve as my brother from another mother. He has more experience when it comes to police and military dogs than just about anyone out there. In this episode we talk about some great "Muzzle Stories." These are all real life instances where a muzzled police k9 has saved a life. Really great information that relates to police work and understanding the lifesaving work that police dogs do every day.
