Fostering adolescent and adult dogs can be challenging. In this episode, I break down the goals and introduce the 7 step fostering program I have applied with hundreds of dogs and taught to dozens of fosters. Programs for pet parents are different than those of fostering - Why? Because the goal is different! Fostering is not about BEING the best home or addressing behavioral issues that are specific to the foster home, but rather, taking the steps to ensure a successful adoption into the best home for the dog. I use the example of a recent foster couple I helped with their challenging dog. Their goal to address behavioral issues specific to their home life complicated the process of providing the dog with the necessary skills to be happily homed. The UPWARD Dogology 7 step program keeps the goals in the forefront and the success rate high. In this episode, I review these steps, discussing why they are important, and how they eliminate the need for lengthy fostering periods and allow for an easy integration into their new home. Welcome to Dog Training DisrUPted by UPWARD Dogology!Canine Enrichment is all the rage, especially in shelters and amongst behavioral experts. Yes, another trendy term that seems positive, but is it? Well, like most things, when used to divert from the real issue, or "sell" products and services by promoting them as something they are not, this can lead to frustration with tragic results.Once again, I present a candid, educational view to help you make the right decisions for you and your dog. There is no "one right way" to work with a dog, to train, or to pet parent. Know your options and make educated decisions.Thank you for your support and interest. And for all you do for the dogs. Leash walks can be frustrating when dogs are pulling, putting on the brakes, or lolly-gagging. Should you be expected to continuously turn around, or simply allow your dog to sniff everything? Should you be expected to have decompression walks that are really only decompressing for your dog? In this ep I talk about common recommendations, from continuously turning around, standing still, to allowing your dog to sniff and decide the direction (is this a technique?). I talk about different apparatuses designed to prevent pulling, and discuss some pros and cons of some popular ones. I make some suggestions of easy exercises to apply to gain greater focus (no, not treats or the look at me command), and provide suggestions as to how to apply these to your situation and daily life. Leash walking is all about having the skills to communicate and provide calm, clear direction. Your dog's perception of you and the environment determines his or her behavior.NOTE - this is not a training guide. The advice is to be adjusted to your needs and specific situation, and dog. Episode 29. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Dogs with Billie Groom of UPWARD Dogology. While Billie Groom didn't grow up with pets, the dogs started finding her when she was in her 20s. Billie's passion was ignited when she stumbled upon a dog hiding under a log on a beach and found her a loving home. After traveling through the U.S. in a renovated bus and running an informal dog rescue in North Carolina, Billie returned to Canada and fell into starting a dog walking company. While running her business, Billie found she had a knack for working with dogs with behavioral issues and found herself helping pet parents improve their dog's problematic adolescent behavior and assisting dogs with a “checkered past.” Billie's UPWARD Dogology has helped hundreds of families who are often in a crisis due to their dog's behavior. Billie's methodology differs from traditional training methods and is based on the principles of cognitive behavior therapy. Welcome to our first mid-month episode where I provide insight and info on dog behavior, followed by an guest speaker who is in an expert in their field. Let's talk about Anxiety Rehabilitation! Conventional methods, ones common in mainstream dog training, adhere to the principles of Conditioning Methodologies. They are intentionally designed to teach and encourage expected behaviors, and prevent unwanted behaviors, making them great for puppies and some dogs. But what happens when dogs already feel fear or anxiety and their behaviors are already established? Well, this is where cognitive behavioral therapy shines! Find out why.Meet Brad Malin, owner of Companion CBD, the only CBD product with a veterinarian on the team! Brad has a background in health and has worked closely with veterinarians. Many dog owners like to think their dog is smart, but a new study has wrapped some fascinating data around just how intelligent some dogs really are – or are not! Also, how saying yes after a chance encounter started a love story CBS Reporter Martha Teichner could never have imagined. Einstein dogs not that common It may shock some dog owners to know that their pooch is not as smart as they think. A new study of gifted and talented dogs has revealed that canine Mozart's or Einstein's are likely rare. Now the next big question for scientists, to track the genetics and history of breeds to find what makes the smartest creatures. Some dogs are geniuses – just like humans Take the Genuis Dog Challenge here Martha Teichner – When Harry Met Minnie The Union Square Greenmarket is the beating heart of the romance of New York City. A chance encounter there led to Martha Teichner meeting Harry the Bull Terrier. He turned out to be a love match for her Bullie, Minnie ... and his mother, Carol Fertig, dying from liver cancer, turned out to be a remarkable friend for Martha. Adopting a dog is rewarding, but can be challenging due to inherent stress. A reaction to stress is, as with humans, not eating, which can be scary! Common techniques often fail because they are not addressing the reason - in other words, we need to find the reason to determine solution. What if the dog is not stressed? What if their are no physical ailments? Maybe the solution requires logic and an understanding of how dog's think and feel and what is important to each dog.We then chat about the Decompression period - is it simply an extension of the 3 day, 3 week, 3 month "meme"? Do dogs need it?A recent scientific study out of the UK compares the opinions of veterinarians to those of dog owners regarding aggression and anxiety in former street dogs adopted into homes. The results are...well....they certainly bring home the need to more effectively address aggression and anxiety in adopted dogs. We got this covered, but are the vets listening? We got new music! This ep. is all about reading and understanding our dogs, respecting their needs, and adapting to their personalities and they grow and change. Liz Murdoch is an animal communicator with a passion for helping people bond and understand their pet on a whole new level. This is a great chat full of surprising tidbits of info.I follow this with three examples of feedback I received from the challenge from last month's ep. (inserting command based exercises on a leash walk that require your feet to move when the dog does not, and unteaching the Sit command). This leads to some surprising results for two dogs with different kinds of anxiety and one silly dog! I then use a client example to show the benefits of providing dogs with options. By pre-determining the end goal, we often limit the ability for dogs to overcome fears and prevent ourselves from enjoying the company of our dog. UPWARD Dogology allows us to provide skills to read the dog, adapt to individual dogs' personalities and progress as the dog progresses. UPWARD Dogology is a scientifically proven formula grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy (C.B.T.) which addresses behaviors associated with anxiety, aggression, the adolescent stage, and rescued dogs. The UPWARD Dogology formula is proven to decrease surrenders and euthanasia due to behavioral reasons and has improved the lives of thousands of dogs and saved the sanity of hundreds of people for three decades. A listener, who is a scientist, asked a great question - "Can positive reinforcement training reach the cognitive side of the brain?" Great question. I had to think about this and am excited to share my thoughts. We then explore Canine Enrichment exercises, their benefits, and if they reach the cognitive side of the brain.I then use an example provided by a professor as to what CBT is and how it is like making soup!I was recently a guest on a tv show where I provided a tip that combines R+ exercises and CBT to help integrate a rescued dog into your home. Billie uses 4 scientific studies on dog cognition to explain why we need a method grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy to address a common unwanted behavior in dogs over 6 months. In this episode we explore four cognitive abilities by introducing the studies which prove dogs have these abilities. I discuss how these abilities, although considered positive, can cause common unwanted behaviors and why suppressing these skills can increase the unwanted behavior.Memory, Emotions, Object Permanence, Object Differentiation, Dexterity, and the ability to understand that an action has a result are some of the recent trends in scientific studies. If dogs can think cognitively, and their behaviors, whether considered "good" or "bad" (wanted or unwanted) are a result of these skills, we need to harness these skills to understand these behaviors. By remaining under the Operant Conditioning umbrella (positive reinforcement and balanced training), we simply cannot harness their cognitive abilities, which explains why addressing these behaviors is often challenging or impossible. NOTE: You do not need to be a scientist or a certified dog trainer to understand the info in this episode. Welcome to the first episode of 2021 where we dissect a scientific study which, although valid and adhering to professional standards, begs the question as to whether the exercise, grounded in positive reinforcement training used to determine the results, is a factor in creating the change in behaviors commonly associated with the adolescent stage. In other words: are the methods we use to solve the problems actually causing the problems?NOTE: You do not need to be a scientist to understand the info in this episode, nor do you need to review the study before hand. We are excited to introduce Jessica Heaton, who shares with us her experience volunteering in Morocco for a remote rescue organization that specializes in rehabilitating dogs with disabilities. Jessica's knowledge of dogs and her professional and volunteer work with dogs with disabilities inspired her to create a children's book for people of all ages, to spread awareness on the abilities of dogs with disabilities. She donates a portion of her sales back to the dogs in the rescue who "gave" so much to her. I follow our chat with a talk on how scientific studies on the ability for dogs to think cognitively validate UPWARD Dogology which is grounded in CBT. Dominance is a buzzword, and often controversial topic, in the dog world. Why? Well, it has a negative connotation, yet at the same time, dog owners are often told they need to gain dominance over their dog. What is acceptable? Is gaining Dominance really our goal? Is expecting our place on the hierarchy ladder and our rules and policies to be respected asking too much? This thought-provoking piece on Dominance is followed by a chat with Sandra Davis, co-owner of The People Smart Academy. Comparing humans and canines is, again, a controversial topic, yet, as professions, we find it effective (yes, Sandra compares humans to dogs!). How we express ourselves, read others, teach and coach, and communicate is so important in all we do in life. Are behavioral issues unique to geographical locations? level of abuse? lifestyle during puppyhood? How do these effect the personality or needs of a dog? Perhaps all of these have an effect, but what is most important are the way the dog thinks and processes based on experiences, which are not as unique to geographical location and/or breed as one may think. How a dog is forced to think and how he perceives his surroundings effects his behaviours. Sound obvious? You think it would be more obvious that it appears to be. We explore the role of women and our reaction when the behaviour of the dog is causing disruption to the family dynamics. Women are often the main care givers and we tend to blame ourselves when things are out of balance. If you are frustrated and feeling defeated, learn why it is not your fault and how you can make changes to re-empower yourself and help your family. This episode was created after I was a guest on a podcast called, "Her Canvas", where we discuss this issue in greater depth. One of the most important approaches of UPWARD Dogology is "Never rush to your end goal". Sound obvious? With the increased popularity of Balanced Training, corrections is a hot topic in the behavioral world. Rewards are the basis of Positive Reinforcement Training. Because of this focus on rewards and corrections, many trainers and behaviourists are "missing the forest for the trees". Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which UPWARD Dogology is grounded in, uses rewards to establish the platform, but is not dependent on rewards or correction to change perception and in turn change behaviour. Is one method better that the other? Well, that depends on many factors. For a deeper look into these topics and methods, please check out the episodes in seasons 1 and 3. I share what I learned from working with rescued dogs; as much as we want to praise and treat them into doing the "right" behaviour, or "force an issue" by enforcing rules, or rushing to the end goal, we need to work with these dogs in a way that makes sense to them - remember, they are alive because they know how to process and think with the cognitive side of their brain. It finishes with an introduction into cognitive behavioural therapy and UPWARD Dogology. Most importantly, Upward Dogology has a change in music! Danielle Bourjeaurd is a 2017 CCMA (Canadian Country Music Awards) winner (Discovery Artist) and is making a splash in the country music fanclub. Nikki is not only a certified veterinarian technician, but also a research nut - especially when it comes to canine health and nutrition. She is chalk full of cool advice (the "who knew?" kind of tips and info). She digs deep in her research and talks with vets and canine nutritionists and then puts it all into an easy to understand "nutshell". There is so much info, especially generic information, on social media it is easy to get misinformed and lead down the wrong path. The Canine Health Nut is here to help guide you in the right direction. As Nikki suggests for health related advice, behavioural advice provided on social media or through "coffee shop conversation" (because "everyone is a dog expert") may not be wrong, but it may not be correlative to your issues or needs, or the personality of your dog. Examples are provided to help you weed through the crap and focus on your goals.Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! This week's episode features Heather Johnson who, originally from New Jersey, now runs a rescue in a remote area of Mexico - sounds fun, right? Well, Heather wakes up morning saying, "Oh Fuck!", then reminds herself how brave these dogs are. The SnipPet Tip dives into the importance of transferable skills taught using opportunity-driven rewards to establish the platform that goes with the dog to the adopter to change the dog's perception of the new "two-legger". Season 4 introduces us to people who volunteer and work with dogs in a variety of ways. Billie hosts these eye-opening and entertaining Q and A, conversational style interviews with her co-host, David L. Helsel, rescuer and volunteer. Each interview is followed by a SnipPet piece on a dog related topic relevant to the interview. In this episode, we interview Furry Hobos N Hiway Heros, a non-profit organization founded by Margaret Foster-Hyde, that organizes the transport of animals across North America to their new homes! 100% volunteer run, the truckers get as much out of these transports as the pets do. The effort, planning and passion that goes into these transports is well worth it.Listen in on the three way conversation where we have an off-the-cuff chat with Maggie, a seasoned trucker and youngest member of Furry Hobos N Hiway Heros, and Dave Mackenzie, editor and publisher of Canadian Trucking Magazine (CTM) and long-time supporter of Margaret and her efforts. You don't want to miss this one!The SnipPet Tip is, appropriately on why truckers are more logical than trainers when it comes to advising on how to keep your dog calm, especially in places such as a vehicle. "Do you eat potato chips? Do you know anyone who eats potato chips?" This episode features Mypetcipe, a unique combo of people who care about the health of dogs because a personal experience with their rescued dog inspired them to research human grade recipes that help dogs - and this lead to a whole new adventure. Their recipes are free to find and easy to prepare. The SnipPet piece is, appropriately, on hand-feeding. Why do the experts, such as Ian Dunbar, suggest handfeeding for adopted dogs? Karen Grange is full of surprising and thought provoking info for anyone wanting to start or volunteer with a dog rescue. Is it all it is cut out to be? Well, that depends on your expectations and your perception of people! The SnipPet is back by popular demand - a short piece on a random topic (commonly associated with the interview). In this episode, the SnipPet discusses the benefits of teaching people how to work with their dogs. Board-n-train, classroom style, or even 1-on-1 without a 2 way conversation (due to the trainer's inability to adapt to individual clients and dogs), can be limiting for both the trainer/behaviourist and their client. Learn why working with fosters and rescuers forces trainers and behaviourists to elevate their skill set. This podcast series is an ever-advancing learning journey that broadens the mind and changes the way we view working with dogs. The dog behavioural world is saturated with terminology and trending techniques. In this episode, Billie explains what Impulse Control is and how it can be misunderstood and/or taught incorrectly, using the examples of training videos provided online. She uses client examples to explain the importance of understanding the purpose of impulse control exercises.NOTE: This podcast series is not intended to criticize trainers or debunk methods. This podcast series is an ever-advancing learning journey that broadens the mind and changes the way we view working with dogs. Enjoy your learning journey! This episode details the results of the studies of counter-conditioning with her clients (previous episode). Billie describes how dogs react differently to mental positive stimuli (exercises) than to that of a physical positive stimuli (toy or treat) and how we can tell if we have "reached the cognitive side of the dog's brain". She uses a client example to show how addressing leash reactivity with dogs who are friendly with dogs acts as a "platform builder" to address aggression toward people. This podcast series is an ever-advancing learning journey that broadens the mind and changes the way we view working with dogs. Counter Conditioning is an evidence based method, proven to change behaviors grounded in aggression and anxiety. How we have adapted counter conditioning to address aggression and anxiety in dogs has taken some interesting turns. Billie refers to the advice provided by the American Kennel Club and the Animal Humane Society, trainers/behaviourists, and her own research based on hundreds of clients per year for decades to dive deep into what exactly counter conditioning is and why it is effective - or not. This episode also explains what evidence based and scientifically proven methods are. This is the first part of a 2 part series in the 3rd Season. Welcome to Season 3 where Billie takes a look into trending methods such as Balanced Training, Counter Conditioning and Impulse Control, commonly recommended techniques grounded in Operant Conditioning and Positive Reinforcement Training, and how dog trainers, professionals in the field and dog-people view dog training which may be creating barriers to success. Praise? Treats? Positive Reinforcements? Positive Correction/Punishment? These are reactive in nature and grounded in Operant Conditioning (confused? take a listen to the earlier episodes in this 4 part mini-series) . It is time to learn how to establish the platform, what teaching opportunities are, why opportunity driven rewards are different, and why transferable skills are essential. Learn the core tools of UPWARD Dogology and how they all work together to reach the cognitive side of the brain and effectively work with dogs. We all know dogs can think and process and that 6 months is a common age for change in behaviours to occur. But why? And how do we address these changes? More restraints, gimmicks, toys, negative reinforcements? Nope - we need to harness the cognitive side of the brain, just like we do with children when they turn 4. Find out what that means for dogs.Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! Are you frustrated by the methods commonly recommended by the experts (and the coffee-shop advice provided on social media)? Ripping your hair out because you know your dog is good, but he is flipping-you-the-bird? Wondering why your dog loves treats, but still bites or hides or lunges or jumps or has a complete meltdown when another dog goes by your front window (a.k.a. "dog tv")? You are not alone! Positive Reinforcement Training is half of Operant Conditioning,, which is scientifically proven effective, so why is it limiting? Well, the short answer is one-half of a scientifically proven methodology is simply that.... one half. Is including Negative Reinforcement the answer? No! We cannot realistically expect it to address the needs of all dogs with one method. As with people, and in particular with children, we need to adapt the way we parent, or pawrent, to suit their needs and the reason for the behavior.Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! To avoid that "deer-in-the-headlights-look" as you venture through the mini-series, it is a good idea to hear how Billie's learning journey lead to the creation of UPWARD Dogology. This is not your average learning journey - no certifications, no set game plan, and no rules. Why no certifications? Because all the certifications are for positive reinforcement trainers, and Billie is not that!
