Tonight we're pulling off the highway for this one. Somewhere between mile markers on the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip, an email came in that I couldn't drive past, so we're parking in the gravel for a while to hear it. A man who's listened to just about everything I've put out finally wrote down something he'd carried alone for forty years, and he sent it to me because he trusts how I handle a story. He was nineteen, deep in the military in the mid-1980s, out on an extended field problem in mountain country so remote that help was a full day away if anything went wrong. His commanding officer briefed them on bears and big cats and told them to keep their heads on a swivel, that this wasn't the kind of country that announces itself. By the third day, his element of six men had found crude shelters built from bent saplings woven together with living vines, and the birds had gone silent across the whole drainage. What happened that night is the reason he's telling it now. White points of light with no source to reflect them, hanging six feet off the ground in the dark. Vocalizations from opposite slopes that climbed past anything an animal should be able to make, answering each other across the men's position. A smell that came in waves as something circled them. Rocks the size you don't throw by hand, dropped inside their perimeter close enough to kick dirt in a man's face, placed like a warning rather than an attack. One of them breaking branches at slow, even intervals as it walked right up to a soldier's position and just stood there, breathing. And in the gray light before dawn, through their night vision, three of them at the tree line. One very large, two smaller by a foot or two and skinnier, restless, hanging back. The way the three of them moved off together didn't look like animals scattering. It looked like a family heading home.Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? In this episode, Brian sits down with author and researcher Norman Solie for the first half of their conversation, focused entirely on the encounters and experiences that pulled Norman into the world of Sasquatch research.Norman traces his fascination back to childhood, when he first saw the Patterson-Gimlin film while growing up in Washington. That early impression stayed with him, but it was a solo backpacking trip in 1980 to a remote lake in the Cascade Mountains that would leave him with questions he could not easily dismiss.During that trip, Norman heard a chilling wail in the night, discovered a large muddy footprint near his tent, and was overcome by an urgent, unexplainable feeling that he needed to leave immediately. As he made his way out, the sound of breaking branches behind him only deepened the mystery. After stepping away from the subject in the mid-1980s, Norman's interest was reignited years later during a 2006 retreat in Illinois, where he witnessed a small, black, fuzzy-edged figure watching people from a distance. What first seemed strange and difficult to explain would later lead him to consider the possibility that he had seen a juvenile Sasquatch.Norman also shares a series of unusual experiences from Alaska and Massachusetts, including the feeling of being watched, possible structures, tracks, scat, tree breaks, strange vocalizations, possible eye shine, and unexplained knocks both near his home and along trails around his remote cabin. This is Part 1 of Brian's conversation with Norman Solie, centered on Norman's personal encounters and field experiences. Part 2 airs this Sunday and will focus on Norman's book, Before Patty Volume One: Patrick The Sasquatch/Human Hybrid & Our Genetic Inheritance. In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, my guest is Dr. Eddie Chang, MD, a neurosurgeon and Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). We discuss the neural circuits underlying speech and language, including how the brain controls the larynx, vocal folds and articulators to shape breath into words. We also explore his pioneering work on speech neural prosthetics — brain-machine interfaces that allow paralyzed patients to communicate by decoding neural activity into speech and avatar-driven facial expressions. Additionally, we examine the neurobiology of stuttering, the role of auditory feedback in fluent speech, and the broader ethical questions surrounding brain augmentation technologies. A listener writes in after sitting on this story for three months, and what he sends is one of the most layered north Georgia encounter accounts we've had on the show. Four men, one of them a thirty-year researcher in his early sixties, hike a mile and a half off a forest service road into a drainage that looks promising on a map. By the second night, they're surrounded.Vocalizations from three directions. Heavy bipedal footsteps and breathing right outside a tent wall. A smell like ozone mixed with something animal. Rocks placed, not thrown, into camp as they tried to pack. A voice from the tree line calling one man's name in his wife's exact inflection. And a laugh that wasn't shaped right. Then it gets stranger. Glowing orbs moving silently through the canopy. Equipment behaving the way equipment isn't supposed to behave. Watches reading three different times in the same parking area. Eye shine pacing the truck on the drive out. And weeks later, a phone call that finally explains what the older researcher had walked up alone to see on Saturday afternoon, and why he'd kept it to himself until everyone was safely home. This one is told as the email arrived, lightly edited, names changed at the writer's request. It's a story about a corridor, about layered phenomena that don't fit in one frame, and about the moment a veteran researcher decides he's filled his box and won't be filling it anymore. If you've had something happen to you out there that you've been carrying around alone, the email is brian@paranormalworldproductions.com. In the summer of 1985 a military family moved onto a hundred-acre farm in Dent County, Missouri, deep in the Ozarks, backed up against thousands of acres of national forest. Their twelve-year-old son spent the first weeks exploring the property and felt completely at home in the woods until the day something changed.A heavy sense of being watched. Massive canine tracks along the creek that dwarfed anything he'd ever seen. Vocalizations at night that carried across the valley and sounded like nothing he could identify. His father dismissed it at first, but when the family's goats started disappearing and the evidence pointed to a large, aggressive predator tearing through fencing and dragging animals into the timber, he couldn't ignore it anymore. The situation escalated through the summer until one September night, under the glare of floodlights, the entire family stood at their living room window and watched something step out of the tree line that none of them have ever been able to explain. This is Kevin's story, told for the first time in forty years.Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? In this epiosde Brian sits down with Corina from British Columbia who is hear to share how a growing fascination with Sasquatch was shaped by three unsettling hunting experiences near Prince George. What began as curiosity became far more personal after a series of encounters in remote country left her questioning what might be moving through those woods alongside them.During an elk hunt in September 2024, Corina  heard an incredibly loud bark and then caught sight of something she still struggles to explain. About 130 yards away, she saw a black, hooded, humanlike figure that appeared to lower itself smoothly out of view. Levi never saw it, but the image stayed with her and became the first moment that pushed the mystery from possibility into something much more real. A year later, in September 2025 on the KO Road, the experiences became even more intense. Corina and Levi heard wood knocks from behind them, followed by three knocks ahead, as if something was deliberately responding or repositioning. They also heard repetitive rhythmic barks, strange movement sounds without any visible tree movement, and a roar so powerful it triggered immediate fear. Corina describes a deeply personal moment from that outing when she alone perceived swishy, speech-like sounds and formed a vivid mental impression of a Sasquatch yelling a word, opening a thought-provoking conversation about whether such moments are best understood as mind speak, intuition, or something else entirely. The encounters did not stop there. In November 2025, Corina and Levi returned to the area and heard more wood knocks along with what sounded like heavy bipedal footsteps approaching the treeline. Although they tried to capture the moment on video, the evidence did not come through, leaving them with another powerful experience but no clear proof to show for it.Throughout the conversation, Brian and Corina talk about the reality of moving through wilderness where fear of grizzlies is already ever-present, and how those risks shape the way they respond to unexplained activity. They also explore the bigger questions that come with possible Sasquatch encounters, including whether scientific discovery would protect these beings or put them in greater danger.Email BrianGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? Brian welcomes Joey from Maryland, whose connection to the episode begins with a heartfelt voicemail about Bigfoot Country. Joey shares how deeply he related to the book's themes of childhood, solitude, and finding refuge in the woods, explaining that his own upbringing followed a similar path. That conversation opens the door to one of Joey's earliest and most unforgettable encounters. As a child in the mid-to-late 1980s, he was near a local creek when he spotted something extraordinary: a tiny white creature, roughly two feet tall, descending a tree. He describes it as chimp-like, juvenile in appearance, and unlike anything he had ever seen before. The moment became even more unsettling when the creature locked eyes with him, then vanished as it moved around the trunk.Years later, after developing a deeper interest in Bigfoot, Joey began experiencing other strange events in the same general area. After playing the Sierra Sounds near the creek, his dogs later refused to leave the porch while he heard eerie, chimp-like vocal responses coming from the darkness. About a week later, the activity escalated when loud, forceful tree knocks erupted near his home, sounding like a bat striking wood. Even his highly trained protection dogs were visibly shaken. Each time Joey tried to record the sounds, they stopped, only to begin again farther away.Joey also reflects on other unsettling experiences over the years, including being seemingly followed by dueling owls near the Potomac and, more recently in 2025, spotting an unusually large canine crossing the road. Throughout the conversation, Brian explores the rarity of juvenile, chimp-like Sasquatch descriptions and offers thoughtful caution about using the Sierra Sounds in the field. He shares experiences of his own involving multiple unexplained phenomena and suggests that these moments may heighten awareness rather than “mark” a person in any permanent way.He also points to dogs' behavior as one of the most telling indicators that something unusual may be happening nearby. The episode closes with updates on several ongoing projects, including a limited Sierra Sounds vinyl release with Ron Morehead, along with work on The Sheriff of Bigfoot Country, Koda's Odyssey, and The Bigfoot Journals.Email BrianGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? Part Nine brings Bigfoot Country to its climax, and it does so by circling back to where every great investigation begins — with the people who lived it.After years of building this platform, the floodgates finally opened. Witnesses who had been listening from the shadows for months, sometimes years, started stepping forward. People like Patricia Ann Holloway, a seventy-one-year-old retired librarian from Pennsylvania who had carried a secret since 1973 — the summer she was nineteen years old and working at a Baptist church camp in the Allegheny National Forest. What she saw standing at the tree line that night, seven feet tall with eyes reflecting her flashlight beam, changed her forever. She kept quiet for nearly fifty years. When the only other witness — a twelve-year-old camper named Susan — passed away from cancer, Patricia decided she wasn't going to take that secret to her grave too.Her story opened the door for dozens more. A ninety-year-old former logger from Vermont who remembered the creatures the old timers simply called the Wild Men. A woman from Mississippi passing down her grandmother's encounter from the nineteen twenties. A retired park ranger from California who had spent forty years documenting things he could never put in an official report. But the witnesses were only half the story. Researchers started coming forward too — scientists and academics who had sacrificed careers and reputations to study something the mainstream refused to acknowledge. A primatologist who recognized authentic dermal ridges on a footprint cast. A geneticist with hair samples that matched no known species. An anthropologist who had collected indigenous oral histories from around the world and found an undeniable pattern running through all of them. Then came the most dangerous interview of all.A former military intelligence officer, speaking through an encrypted line, revealed the existence of government programs spanning six decades. Programs designed not just to suppress evidence, but to study these creatures — and exploit them. He couldn't say everything. He said enough. The tension ratcheted up from there. Physical confrontations on mountain roads.Men in dark suits offering deals and making threats. And a manila folder full of classified documents that blew the lid off everything — project names like Titan Watch, Forest Shadow, and Mind Bridge, detailing decades of monitoring, containment, and experimentation on captured creatures.Through all of it, Brian wrestled with the personal weight of the mission. Late night conversations with his mother, who carried her own encounters with the unexplainable. Quiet moments on the porch with Daniel.A faith that had evolved far beyond the Baptist church of his childhood into something broader and harder to name — a belief that the universe held mysteries worth chasing, no matter the cost. The final expedition into the Pisgah wilderness brought everything full circle. Days of waiting. Thermal signatures circling in the dark. Vocalizations echoing through old-growth timber. And on the last night, alone at the edge of camp under a full moon, a moment of silent recognition between two species that have shared this land far longer than anyone wants to admit.Part Nine is about what happens when the dam finally cracks. When the witnesses refuse to stay silent. When the researchers stop protecting their careers and start protecting the truth. And when one man, standing on a dark porch in the Appalachian Mountains, hears a chorus of howls rising from the forest and knows the world is about to change.Email BrianGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? In this episode, Brian shares an email from a military veteran who served multiple combat tours in Afghanistan and wants the world to hear a story that's been buried for three decades. Matt, as he asks to be called, writes in about a confession made to him by a fellow soldier he calls Joe during a night of drinking while the two were stateside between deployments. Joe revealed that in the mid nineteen nineties, long before the war on terror, he was part of a small specialized team dispatched into an unnamed national park after two hikers went missing. The male hiker's body was found twenty five feet up in a tree with his neck broken. The female hiker was never found. What search teams did find were massive humanoid footprints ranging from sixteen inches to nearly twenty three inches long pressed deep into the soil along a remote creek drainage. Joe's team was briefed by an unnamed civilian and given a single objective: locate and eliminate the creatures responsible. What followed was a harrowing two day hunt through old growth forest that culminated in the killing of four creatures, including a female, a juvenile estimated at around five feet tall, and a massive adult male standing over eight feet tall that charged the team and injured two soldiers before being brought down. Within hours of the kills, an unmarked black helicopter arrived carrying a civilian recovery team that bagged the bodies and flew them out to an unknown location. The soldiers were debriefed, told the mission never happened, and ordered to never speak of it again. Matt believes every word Joe told him that night, and he wants you to hear it.Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? Jerry and the Sasquatch Recon crew return as Jerry shares how a childhood viewing of The Legend of Boggy Creek and a 1977 book fair purchase sparked his fascination with Bigfoot—an interest that intensified after moving near the South Mountains, where he began finding tree breaks pointing toward water. By 2015 he was hearing wood knocks and eerie vocalizations, and in 2017 he and his wife watched a large figure glide effortlessly through a cornfield beside their home.A 2019 sighting by family members near his pasture led to escalating activity around his property, including moved objects, opened feed barrels, dragged water containers, and late-night pounding on the house. After appearing in a 2021 Fox documentary, others began sharing their encounters, inspiring him to interview dozens of witnesses and launch a show focused on credible reports. He recounts chilling experiences while tending animals—piercing whistles, bassy vocal blasts, and two overwhelming howls that stirred deep fear and inspired his poem “The Haunted.” Rock-throwing incidents, damaged property, and reports of severely injured or killed animals in the region reinforce his belief that something powerful is operating in the area.Research into a late-1970s wave of sightings, along with local lore and unusual tracks, leaves him open to multiple phenomena, including the possibility of “dog men.”He discusses regional names like “Knobby,” “boogers,” and “wampus,” seasonal movement patterns along Wards Creek, and the way his animals react to disturbances. The episode closes with what he considers his strongest evidence: video footage of an exceptionally tall white or gray figure standing in a neighboring pasture, appearing taller than nearby six-and-a-half-foot fence posts.Sasquatch Recon YouTube ChannelWatch My Bigfoot Life on Amazon Prime Video Email BrianGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

And when one man, standing on a dark porch in the Appalachian Mountains, hears a chorus of howls rising from the forest and knows the world is about to change.

A veteran park ranger with over two decades of service reaches out after years of listening to the show in silence. He's heard me share my own encounter and talk about experiences from other law enforcement and first responders, and he finally decided it was time to tell his story. He's never told anyone. Not his wife. Not his coworkers. No one. Kevin was assigned to a week-long solo backcountry bear survey deep in the Pacific Northwest. Six miles from the nearest road, surrounded by old growth timber and some of the most remote wilderness in the lower forty-eight. He was experienced. He was prepared. He had no idea what was waiting for him.It started on day one with a cluster of trees twisted and broken at eight feet. By day two he'd found a massive bare footprint next to a structure that had no business being there. That night, sounds he couldn't identify echoed across the ridgeline and something started working its way toward his camp.By day three, rocks from the creek were being placed near his tent while he was away. And then on night four, everything escalated to a point where Kevin had to make a split-second decision that's haunted him for almost nine years. This is one of the most detailed and credible accounts I've ever received. Kevin asked me to keep his full identity and exact location confidential, and I'm honoring that. What I'm not keeping confidential is what happened to him out there, because this story needs to be heard. If you're in law enforcement, park service, military, or any first responder role and you've been carrying something like this, my inbox is open. The guys from Sasquatch Recon are back. And this time, they're taking us deep into the shadowy lowlands of South Carolina and the mysterious foothills of North Carolina—where the line between wildlife and the unexplained gets very blurry. In this episode, the team recounts a tense and unsettling expedition through South Carolina's swamp country, where a single discovery snowballed into something far more disturbing. A strange footprint. Eerie, unidentifiable vocalizations echoing through the darkness.Moments that made it clear they weren't alone—and whatever was out there didn't want to be seen. The story then shifts to Rutherford County, North Carolina, a well-known hotspot for high strangeness. From repeated wood knocks and fresh footprints to unexplained sightings in the field, the encounters raise serious questions about what's really moving through these forests.Beyond the investigations themselves, the hosts open up about their personal paths into Bigfoot research, the methods they use in the field, and how their experiences increasingly intersect with paranormal phenomena. For twenty-six years, Dale wore the badge—and kept a secret he couldn't afford to share. Now retired after nearly three decades as a deputy sheriff in a rural southeastern county bordering a vast national forest, Dale finally breaks his silence. During his career, he experienced six separate Sasquatch encounters—stories he kept buried until turning in his badge in late 2025.His experiences span decades and defy easy explanation. In 1994, Dale witnessed a massive, upright creature cross a two-lane highway directly in front of his patrol car. Years later, a night spent at a remote campground left him shaken after hearing unmistakable wood knocks and a distant, haunting howl—one he now recognizes as identical to the infamous Ohio Howl recording. But Dale's story doesn't end with his own encounters. As a trusted figure in his community, people came to him when they had nowhere else to turn. An elderly cattle farmer who carried the memory of a face-to-face encounter for more than forty years. The sister of a logger who finally revealed her brother's terrifying experience on a remote timber road in the 1980s. And two chilling accounts from one of Dale's closest friends—a Forest Service law enforcement ranger who discovered massive footprints and complex tree structures deep in the backcountry, and who later endured a harrowing night as something circled his tent for twenty minutes before sitting down forty feet away, silently watching him in the darkness.

Tonight we're going back to basics. Six encounter stories from six different states, told the way they were meant to be told. Around the fire. In the dark. The way witnesses have been sharing these experiences for generations. You'll hear from Daryl, a long haul trucker who watched something cross Interstate Ninety in Montana back in nineteen ninety-seven. Something that stepped over a guardrail like it was nothing and looked back at him with eyes that held more intelligence than any animal he'd ever seen.Wade was a deputy in rural Arkansas when he responded to a call about something stealing corn from an old farmer's field. What he saw standing at the tree line that September night in two thousand and twelve changed everything he thought he knew about the woods behind those farms.Colleen spent eleven years as a park ranger in the North Cascades before she got a frantic call from a family trapped in a rental cabin. Something was circling their cabin at night. Pounding on the walls. Screaming in the darkness. She thought it was a bear until she pressed her flashlight to that back window.Hank hunted the same Michigan property for thirty years. Opening day of rifle season in nineteen eighty-nine, something walked into his clearing. He had it in his scope. Finger on the trigger. And he couldn't pull it. He told me why, and his answer has stayed with me ever since.Terry was hiking solo on the Oregon coast when she realized something was following her through the old growth. For twenty minutes it kept pace with her through the trees before it finally let her see it. What happened next surprised even her. And Earl, an eighty-one-year-old Kentucky farmer who wrote me a series of letters in nineteen ninety-six about something that came around his hollow back in seventy-three.Something the old timers in those mountains had always known about but never talked about.Six witnesses. Six encounters. Six lives changed forever.

In this episode, we take a deep dive into the experiences and investigations of Dan Nedrelo, a wildlife photographer and biologist from Wisconsin whose fascination with Sasquatch began in childhood. What started with the encouragement of a fifth-grade teacher evolved into a lifelong pursuit of understanding one of the most elusive figures in the natural world. Dan shares how those early moments of curiosity shaped his path, leading him into decades of field research, collaboration with fellow researchers, and countless hours spent in remote wilderness areas.Throughout the conversation, Dan recounts some of his most compelling experiences in the field, including the discovery of anomalous footprints, unexplained vocalizations, and the recurring presence of strange holes with sticks—an unusual phenomenon documented across multiple research locations. He offers thoughtful insight into the challenges of Bigfoot footprint analysis, emphasizing the fine line between misidentification and genuinely anomalous evidence.Drawing from investigations conducted across several states, Dan paints a vivid picture of the patterns, behaviors, and unanswered questions that continue to surround the Sasquatch phenomenon. The episode also explores Dan's ongoing work with the Wildman Literature Group and the White Biped Project, initiatives dedicated to preserving eyewitness accounts, historical references, and modern research related to Bigfoot encounters. Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

Every once in a while, a story comes across my desk that stops me cold. Not because it's sensational, but because it's precise, deeply personal, and impossible to dismiss. The account you're about to hear is one of those. It arrived as a letter from a man I'm calling Tom, a seventeen-year park ranger in the Great Smoky Mountains who has spent his life dealing in facts, emergencies, and hard reality—not Bigfoot stories.Tom was called to a remote homestead owned by an eighty-two-year-old woman named Mabel. Something had been raiding her property, tearing apart her barn, stealing dog food and chickens, and—most unsettling of all—unlatching doors and closing them behind itself. Bears don't do that. What Tom found near the coop were sixteen-inch footprints with five toes, unmistakably primate, and impossible by any known standard. What followed changed everything he thought he knew about those mountains. Mabel told him she had lived alongside these creatures her entire life. Her mother, her grandmother, and even her great-grandmother had known about them since settling that hollow in the 1840s. There had always been rules, boundaries, and even communication. But a new presence had arrived—larger, gray-furred, aggressive—and for the first time in eighty years, Mabel was afraid. Tom chose to stay. Over the next two weeks, he documented wood knocks, vocalizations unlike any known animal, tree breaks forming deliberate perimeters, rocks thrown with intent, and images from trail cameras that still haunt him. With help from a trusted wildlife officer, he gathered casts, recordings, and photographs that defy easy explanation. And on the eleventh night, he had an encounter that permanently altered his understanding of reality. This story doesn't end with proof or confrontation. It ends with something far rarer: understanding.Tom wrestled with whether to share this, knowing the cost of speaking out. But he thought of Mabel, of his friend who'd carried his own encounter in silence, and of everyone who's seen something in these woods and been told they imagined it. I believe him. What you're about to hear is exactly as Tom wrote it, in his own words. It's long. It's detailed. And it's one of the most moving accounts I've ever received. So settle in. From an eighty-acre homestead at the edge of the Smoky Mountains, this is the letter from Ranger Tom.

Some we'll find right out side our doors and some are continents away but all are fascinating.  This podcast will focus ten, ten minute episodes on different animals and their amazing characteristics. Please join me on this extraordinary journey, you won't regret it. Welcome back to Ten Things I Like About after a year end break. I hope the new year treats you well and opportunities abound. Let's get started! We will continue with Tuatara. The third thing I like about tuatara is reproduction. As we travel along with the journey of discovery with tuatara, I want to pose a question to you. Is the tuatara a lizard? Or is it something else? Based on the physical description I outlined in the first episode, they seem to be lizards, if not very lizard like. But I want you to keep this question in the back of your mind as we progress through each new episode. We will revisit this question at the end of this series and see what we all think. Okay, let's talk about how baby tuatara are made. Tuatara mating and reproduction is not like anything else in the reptile world. Long incubation periods, extensive maturation, and unusual consummation marks the reproductive cycle of the tuatara. It all begins sometime between January and March when males begin showing off to attract a mate. Remember those spines that they have on their neck and back, well they are there for pretties. They can fan out and shake the larger crest of spines in hopes of attracting a lady. For a long time we thought this was all the males did during the breeding season, but a study that looked more closely at males on Takapourewa Island revealed many more tricks they use to catch the ladies eye.  Boys will come a courting at a female's burrow and it can get complicated and lengthy. It might be a good idea that she gets to stay at home once all the excitement begins. First, the male adopts body positions that make him look big, such as inflating the body and gular region (that's the chin area), elevating his body off the forest floor (the up part of a push-up), and erecting those spines on his neck and back. Next, the male will begin the slow proud walk, also known as stolzer Gang, in a circle around the female. He'll perform this slow exaggerated walk in concentric circles, pausing occasionally, and decreasing the circle circumference with each pass. If the female is interested, she will leave her burrow entrance, allow the male to paw at her, and then mount her from behind. If there are obstacles in the male's circular path, they will climb over, or go around. If the obstacle is too big to conquer, they'll just shorten the circle to a semi-circle. I mean you gotta give them props for not getting distracted from their goal. The proud walk can last up to 44 minutes.    A few novel behaviors were observed by researchers studying the Takapourewa population. Mirrored head bobbing between the male and female was observed a few times, something that has not been seen in reptiles before. The male would bob his head a specific number of times and when he paused, the female would bob the small numbers of times. This was a very exciting discovery that will need more research to determine what it means and if it is found in other populations of tuatara, but how very interesting. Vocalizations in tuatara are typically limited to croaks emitted when handled, or during aggressive moments between males, but these researchers encountered several males that purred during the mating process. We aren't sure what this means or if this is a wide spread behavior but it is another exciting discovery. Once the female has accepted the male and he mounts her from behind, he positions his pelvis so that both of their cloacas come in contact. This is how he spreads his sperm to her. Males do not have special reproductive organs like most other reptiles. So they perform the cloacal kiss to pass their sperm to the female. Male sperm are fast swimmers. They are actually the fastest sperm in the reptile kingdom, moving two to four times faster than any other reptile's sperm. The female can store the sperm for 10 to 12 months.  Before all this happens, the female has been working on creating the eggs inside her body. It can take three years for a female to create and egg with yolk and an additional 7 to 8 months to create the shell. A female is only able to successfully breed every three to five years.  Once the eggs are ready and fertilized, the female can lay 1 to 19 soft-shelled, white eggs in her burrow. Incubation is extremely long at 12 to 15 months! Yes, it takes a year or more for baby tuatara to hatch into the world. This is unheard of in reptiles. Maybe not the best survival tactic for a species, but as we can see tuatara don't do anything quickly. Similar to some other reptiles, temperature during incubation is important to the sex of a hatchling. Warmer temperatures produce males while cooler temperatures create females.  The eggs are on their own during incubation and the hatchlings have to fight for life alone as soon as they emerge from the burrow. Neither parent remains at the nest to protect the eggs or hatchlings. If they survive their early years, they have to wait ten to twenty years before they can join the reproductive cycle.  In this episode, I think we've proven that tuatara don't do anything fast and that's why their reproductive cycle is my third favorite thing about them.     If you're enjoying this podcast please recommend me to friends and family and take a moment to give me a rating on whatever platform your listening. It will help me reach more listeners and give the animals I talk about an even better chance at change.  Join me next week for another exciting episode about the tuatara.        (Piano Music plays)  This has been an episode of Ten Things I like About with Kiersten and Company. Heads up, everyone — over the coming weeks I'll be releasing a special Wednesday series centered on the South Mountain region of North Carolina. Jerry will be sharing some truly incredible encounter stories from in and around that area, and each one adds a new layer to the mystery that seems to live in those woods. In this first installment, we're taken into the South Mountains through a terrifying family experience that began as an ordinary camping trip and turned into something they'll never forget. As night settled in, strange wood knocks started echoing through the trees, followed by unsettling “whoops” and other sounds that didn't match anything familiar. The atmosphere shifted fast from quiet wilderness to a feeling of being surrounded, watched, and pushed to the edge of panic. What happened out there left them shaken, confused, and certain that something unknown had moved in close. Jerry also shares additional encounters from across different generations, showing that whatever people are running into in the South Mountains isn't tied to one era or one family.A mid-century story follows a farm boy confronted by a hulking presence with glowing red eyes, an early-1900s account recalls a grandfather being chased through the woods by multiple creatures, and a modern encounter describes two men hearing disturbing sounds and briefly seeing something near their home that they still can't explain. Together, these stories paint a chilling picture of a region where the unexplained has never really stopped happening — and where the line between legend and reality feels uncomfortably thin.Check Out Jerry's Tik TokGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

Being able to belt out a tune like Adele or Pavarotti is not just about raw talent. The best singers in the world have to work on their technique—like how to control their breath and develop the stamina to hit note after note for a two-hour concert. In the trees, through the water, and under the dirt: Snakes evolve faster than their lizard relatives, allowing them to occupy diverse niches. Also, researchers are working to understand just how baleen whales are able to produce their haunting songs.Snakes Are Evolutionary SuperstarsLove ‘em or hate ‘em, new research shows that snakes deserve our recognition as evolutionary superstars. The study, published last week in the journal Science, found that snakes evolve faster than other reptiles, allowing them to thrive in a wide range of environments. It shouldn't be too surprising: Many of the nearly 4,000 snake species occupy extremely specialized niches in their ecosystems. The blunt-headed tree snake, for example, eats through batches of treefrog eggs in Central and South America. Pythons, which can grow to 20 feet long, can take down large mammals like antelopes.Joining Ira to talk about the evolutionary speed of snakes is study co-author Dr. Daniel Rabosky, evolutionary biologist and curator of the Museum of Zoology at the University of Michigan.Whale Song Is All In The LarynxWhale songs can be both beautiful and haunting. But the exact mechanism that the 16 species of baleen whales, like humpback and minke whales, use to make those noises hasn't been well understood. The finer points of whale anatomy are hard to study, in part because the soft tissues of beached whales often begin to decompose before researchers can preserve and study them. And until the relatively recent advent of monitoring tags that can be attached to individual whales, it's been hard to associate a given underwater sound with any specific whale. For a recent study, published in the journal Nature, researchers took advantage of several well-preserved beached whales to investigate the mysteries of the baleen whale larynx and its role in whale song. Dr. Coen Elemans of the University of Southern Denmark joins Ira to discuss the work, which included a MacGyveresque contraption involving party balloons and exercise bands that blew air at controlled pressures through preserved whale larynx tissues. The researchers found that there are limits to both the frequencies these whales can produce, and the depths at which they are physically able to sing.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
