(Piano music stops) Welcome to Ten Things I Like About… I'm Kiersten, your host, and this is a podcast about misunderstood or unknown creatures in nature. Some we'll find right out side our doors and some are continents away but all are fascinating.  This podcast will focus ten, ten minute episodes on different animals and their amazing characteristics. Please join me on this extraordinary journey, you won't regret it. The fourth thing I like about Tanukis is their social structure. Canids have a variety of different social structures, from family packs like wolves, monogamous pairs like coyotes, and solitary lives like foxes. Today we'll take a closer look at the raccoon dog's social activities. Tanuki are, genetically, more closely related to foxes than any other canine, but their social structure is more closely related to coyotes. We are still learning about these understudied animals, but what we know so far shows that tanukis pair off during the breeding season. Once they have paired off, it appears that they may stay together year round. If not closely together in distance they appear to at least share a home range.  Telemetry data shows that tanukis remain in pairs or in small groups within the same home range throughout the year. A home range is a space that an animal can be consistently found that includes hunting grounds, a water source, and a denning site. Non-migratory animals typically remain in their home range for their entire life as long as all resources that they need continue to be offered in that home range. During breeding season a male and a female tanuki pair off and will share a denning site to raise their offspring together. We will delve into reproduction and rearing the young in the next episode.  As stated before, it is unclear whether mated pairs remain together throughout the year but there is evidence that they remain together when they are sleeping or resting. Some populations that live in colder regions will actually hibernate together. Pairs will endure the coldest times of the year in a den with their mate. By the way, tanuki are the only canids that hibernate, that we currently known of, anyways.  As we've discovered in previous episodes, there are differences in behavior based on the location of the tanuki populations. There is no evidence that tanuki live in groups, consistently, in Finland. They will live in pairs with their young offspring, but do not stay together once the young are old enough to survive on their own. Here, the mated pair will stay together in their home range throughout the year.  During the breeding season, in Finland, the mated pairs home ranges never overlap with other mated pairs. Outside of breeding season, some overlap can be seen but only peripherally. The home ranges of mated pairs is pretty stable, fluctuating with the seasons probably due to resource availability, but for the most part they utilize the same space year round. Juveniles that have left their birth home range and have yet to pair off with a mate, have much larger home ranges than mated pairs. This is due to searching for an acceptable home range and a mate of their own. Japanese tanuki also appear to remain in pairs throughout the year, once they have mated. There is evidence that these bonds last for multiple years. Again, they will live with their young until the offspring are ready to head out on their own. Unlike the Finland populations, some Japanese individuals may return to their natal home range, that is where they were born, after they reach maturity.  It is interesting that telemetry research shows tanuki from two different populations live in pairs and small groups for at least a portion of the year, because whenever they are seen by humans they appear to be alone. There are very few reports of seeing raccoons dogs together. I'm not sure what exactly what to think of that, but it's an intriguing mystery. Don't you think, listeners? When I find out that animals are solitary or live in small groups, one of the behaviors that I always want to know about, is communication. All creatures need to communicate with others of their own kind, but how do they do it? Raccoon dogs have several ways to communicate with each other.  Vocalizations are one way that tanuki communicate. They whine, whimper, and mew which are vocalizations that are often associated with friendly greetings or submissive interactions. They can also growl when threatened, but they do not bark.  Body language is important to tanuki as with other canids, but raccoon dogs do not appear to use tail wagging as a form of communication. Most other canines will use tail wagging to communicate various intentions, but as far as we know the tanuki does not. The tanuki does communicate in a unique way. They have social latrines. Yes, I said social latrines. This is a common spot where many tanuki will use the restroom. They urinate and defecate in these social areas, not at the same time, but in the same space. They will sniff the area each time they visit and appear to pick up some information from the piles of excrement. Other canids often use scent marking from urination and defecation to announce their territory boundaries, but tanuki use these latrines to pass information between family members and unrelated tanuki. We need to do much more research on these social latrines to determine what kind of information is passed at these social hubs. Well, that's all for the social behavior of the raccoon dog, we have a lot more to learn, but my fourth favorite thing about this canine is their social structure.  If you're enjoying this podcast please recommend me to friends and family and take a moment to give me a rating on whatever platform your listening. It will help me reach more listeners and give the animals I talk about an even better chance at change.    Join me next week for another fascinating episode about Tanuki.       (Piano Music plays)  This has been an episode of Ten Things I like About with Kiersten and Company. In the trees, through the water, and under the dirt: Snakes evolve faster than their lizard relatives, allowing them to occupy diverse niches. Also, researchers are working to understand just how baleen whales are able to produce their haunting songs.Snakes Are Evolutionary SuperstarsLove ‘em or hate ‘em, new research shows that snakes deserve our recognition as evolutionary superstars. The study, published last week in the journal Science, found that snakes evolve faster than other reptiles, allowing them to thrive in a wide range of environments. It shouldn't be too surprising: Many of the nearly 4,000 snake species occupy extremely specialized niches in their ecosystems. The blunt-headed tree snake, for example, eats through batches of treefrog eggs in Central and South America. Pythons, which can grow to 20 feet long, can take down large mammals like antelopes.Joining Ira to talk about the evolutionary speed of snakes is study co-author Dr. Daniel Rabosky, evolutionary biologist and curator of the Museum of Zoology at the University of Michigan.Whale Song Is All In The LarynxWhale songs can be both beautiful and haunting. But the exact mechanism that the 16 species of baleen whales, like humpback and minke whales, use to make those noises hasn't been well understood. The finer points of whale anatomy are hard to study, in part because the soft tissues of beached whales often begin to decompose before researchers can preserve and study them. And until the relatively recent advent of monitoring tags that can be attached to individual whales, it's been hard to associate a given underwater sound with any specific whale. For a recent study, published in the journal Nature, researchers took advantage of several well-preserved beached whales to investigate the mysteries of the baleen whale larynx and its role in whale song. Dr. Coen Elemans of the University of Southern Denmark joins Ira to discuss the work, which included a MacGyveresque contraption involving party balloons and exercise bands that blew air at controlled pressures through preserved whale larynx tissues. The researchers found that there are limits to both the frequencies these whales can produce, and the depths at which they are physically able to sing.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. After leaving professional football, Marques faced challenges including bankruptcy and having to rebuild his life from scratch. But through resilience, mentorship and helping others, he turned things around. Listen in as Marques discusses his journey - from growing up with a single father, to playing in the NFL, and the struggles he faced post-football. He also offers valuable advice on dealing with fear, building community, and transitioning careers. Marques's story will inspire and motivate you to keep pushing forward no matter what obstacles you encounter in life. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Seeking mentorship and resources in your post-game transition Lessons from his construction company Personality ethics vs. character ethics The four V's of overcoming fear  Episode Highlights: [08:48] Navigating Post-Game Transition: Mentorship and Utilizing Available Resources Recognizing the reality of transitioning after a professional sports career is vital. Athletes can navigate this shift effectively by seeking mentorship and utilizing resources provided by organizations like the NFL, which has initiatives such as NFL Legends, NFLPA, NFL Trust, and NFL Alumni. This guidance is invaluable for any athlete, current or aspiring, as there will inevitably come a time to transition post-game – a truth known even to stars like Tom Brady, who chose to step away from a $375 million contract. This emphasizes the importance of intelligent decision-making during significant life transitions. As you're making a life transition, whether you're an athlete or not, it's important to seek mentorship, find guidance, and surround yourself with the right influences. [16:32] Personality Ethics vs. Character Ethics Personality ethics feed your ego and can include things like rage, wrath, envy, and lust. Living based on personality ethics risks imploding at some point. In contrast, character ethics are virtues like loyalty, truth, justice, and honor. Marques says he now tries to live his life and conduct his business based on character ethics rather than personality ethics. This includes owning up to mistakes, fixing issues, and having difficult but important conversations to resolve conflicts in an authentic way. Character ethics will lead to healthier relationships and long-term success compared to letting your ego be driven by personality ethics. [23:44] Overcoming Fear Through Visualization, Vocalization, Voting, and Vicinity When discussing how he overcame fear while living in an apartment unsure of his future, Marques shares a formula he used: Visualization - He visualized where he wanted to be even if he didn't know how to get there. This helped keep his mind focused on his goal. Vocalization - He vocalized positive self-talk to affirm he was capable and worthy. This could be internal meditation or external manifestation. Voting - Every day he took positive actions like podcast interviews, emails, etc. to "cast positive votes" toward his vision. Vicinity - He changed who he spent time with to surround himself with supportive people instead of toxic influences. Marques says using these four V's - visualize, vocalize, vote, vicinity - is how you can overcome fear and start flowing with positivity to manifest your desired outcomes. It's a framework he recommends for anyone feeling stuck in fear. Visit us at shapedbydog.com    Help, how do I stop my dog barking! This topic gets requested so much I'm turning it into a series. Most people refer to a dog's verbal communication as barking, but what if you reframed it as vocalizing – just as humans do with whispers, laughing, yelling, sobbing, squealing? It's all communication. In part one of this series I'm analyzing the 5 reasons dogs bark and identifying different meanings of canine communication with vocalization. Plus, learn how to decrease excessive barking while understanding the emotions behind your dog's howling, baying, barking, or whining.   In this episode you'll hear:   • Five reasons dogs bark and what to do about nuisance barking. • That dog vocalization is communication first. • The basic dog needs every owner must consider. • How to decrease unwanted dog barking. • How different dog breeds vocalize. • That barking is an emotional expression. • About frustration, anxiety, loneliness, and alarm barking. • That some senior dogs bark because of dementia. • How we accidentally reinforce demand barking.   Resources:   1. Why Are Children's Antibiotics So Hard To Find Right Now? Mary Warlo has been extremely worried lately. Her baby Calieb, who is six months old, has sickle cell disease. In early December he went for a few days without liquid penicillin, a medication that he—and thousands of other children in the U.S.—rely on to prevent potentially life threatening infections. Warlo couldn't easily find a pharmacy in Indianapolis that had the medicine in stock. She and her husband frantically drove around for hours, stopping at five different pharmacies before they were able to get their prescription filled. “It was extremely stressful and I am worried about what will happen the next time we need to fill his prescription two weeks from now,” she said. Pediatric sickle cell disease specialists say they are alarmed by signs that the stock of liquid penicillin is dwindling in some places. They say children's lives depend on this medication, and a penicillin shortage could spell disaster. Read the rest at sciencefriday.com.   Bats Use Death Metal 'Growls' To Make Social Calls What do death metal vocalists and bats have in common? Both use their ventricle folds, or “false vocal cords,” to extend their vocal ranges to hit a lower register. This gives bats a huge vocal range—seven full octaves. Humans typically tap out at about three to four octaves. Even people with really impressive vocal ranges, like Mariah Carey, just can't compete with a bat. A study recently published in the academic journal PLOS Biology examines how and why different anatomical structures might help bats achieve such extreme frequency range. Ira talks with one of the study's authors, Coen Elemans, a professor in bioacoustics and animal behavior at the University of Southern Denmark based in Odense, Denmark.   Can Science Answer Life's Biggest Questions? Dr. Alan Lightman has been around the block a few times. Over the past five decades, he has been a theoretical physicist, professor at MIT, and bestselling author—often at the same time. His most notable novel, Einstein's Dreams, has been adapted into dozens of plays and musicals since its publication in 1992, becoming one of the most famous examples of mixing art and science.  Lightman's work follows a philosophical way of thinking about life's biggest questions, like the origins of consciousness. His new venture brings this way of thinking to the silver screen. Searching: Our Quest for Meaning in the Age of Science consults scientists and faith leaders to grapple with some of these theoretical quandaries. And Lightman gives a good argument for why the journey to these answers can be more impactful than the answers themselves.  Ira speaks with Alan Lightman about the new program, available to watch now online and on your local public television station.
