From food sensitivities and vet stand-offs to a possible scammer targeting the lab rescue, life's keeping Ali and Betsy on their toes. Add in a floor reno that's got Ali crashing at her parents' place, plus the super un-fun adulting milestone of Betsy's shingles vaccine, and it's a full week of canine chaos and human hustle.
⬇️ What are the ways to increase longevity in your senior pet's life ⬇️The worst part about having a dog is how few years they have on this earth. But what if we can help lengthen their lifespan with new breakthroughs in medicine?Today I talk with Dr. Kevin Toman, a vet with 40 years of experience, claims that there are protocols that can extend a pet's live by 14%! I was super interested in learning more because Kramer, my Goldendoodle, is 16 years old and I'd love to help him live a long, pain-free life. I hope you find Dr. Kevin's stories as fascinating as I did. ⬇️ How a crush turned into continuing a 75 year family business ⬇️Even as my pet toy business expands nationwide and internationally, I still hold the family pet shops near and dear to my heart. These are hardworking American families just like mine, trying to provide a great place to work for their employees and to spread smiles to pets and pet owners. Anaheim Feed is no exception - they're a local pet shop in Southern California that's stayed in the family for almost 75 years. Today I invited Sarah Watts, their Purchasing & Merchandise Manager, to chat about the business. We don't play favorites here at ZippyPaws, but we would be lying if we said they weren't one of our favorite customers
⬇️ She built her dream job on a lot in El Paso, Texas ⬇️I think a lot of us dog people have said sometime in their life that they just want to quit their jobs and open up a place where dogs can come play and owners can grab a beer. Well, that's exactly what April did. After many years working in corporate, she left that life, bought a piece of land, and built the dream compound for dog owners. Listen to today's episode to how she turned that idea into a reality. Send us a textIt's our annual Thanksgiving Happy Hour on The Alternative Dog Moms! Erin and Kimberly pour a glass (or two) of Mamamango wine and go completely off-script — as friends do. Once a year, we put structure aside and let the conversation wander wherever our dog-mom brains take it.This episode is full of laughs, real talk, and those “wait… how did we get here?” moments that only happen with your closest friends. And honestly? That's the magic. It's also wild to think that we're wrapping up Season 4 of the podcast — and Season 5 is just around the corner. In this cozy, slightly chaotic holiday hangout, we talk about: • Life updates and dog mom confessions • The random topics that come to mind when wine is poured • What we're grateful for this year • Favorite moments from past seasons • Excitement for what's coming in Season 5If you love relaxed, real-life dog mom energy, this is the perfect episode to unwind with — glass of Mamamango optional, but highly recommended.SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram.com/Erin_The_Dog_MomInstagram.com/RawFeederLifeThanks for listening to our podcast. ⬇️ TEETH CLEANING?? The chore no dog mom wants to do ⬇️Honestly brushing my Dalmatian's teeth is a pain in the toe beans - she is an anxious dog and is very particular about having her paws and mouth touched. We've done our best desensitizing her by positive reinforcement, but brushing her teeth is still a struggle. Lindsey Campbell joins us today to talk about the must-dos to keep our dogs' teeth clean and discuss the new technological advances in pet dental health. Learning Pet Nutrition Science may be easier than you realize. In this episode, I sit down with Holly Baer from Superior Feline to explore the world of homemade pet nutrition. Holly's journey began when her own cats faced serious health challenges—kidney disease, fish allergies, and inflammatory conditions that commercial foods couldn't address. What started as a desperate search for solutions became a mission to help cat parents everywhere take control of their pets' nutrition. From Crisis to SolutionHolly's husband, a microbiologist, dove deep into research when their beloved cat Coconut developed kidney disease. What they discovered changed everything about how they approached feline nutrition. But Superior Feline goes beyond just food mixes. They've developed a complete system including omega-3 oils (both fish and plant-based options), postbiotics for gut health, and liver powder toppers for picky eaters. What you'll learn in this episode:How to transition from commercial to homemade cat food safelyThe difference between probiotics and postbiotics for feline healthSolutions for cats with allergies, kidney disease, and digestive issuesTips for dealing with picky eaters and multiple cats with different preferencesHusband and Wife team, Eric and Holly Baer, founded Superior Feline because of the positive, physical results they saw from making homemade cat food for their two cats, Coconut and Luna Belle, who had health issues. ⬇️ LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST KRISTEN ⬇️Some of you may know the story of Birdie's life (and if you'd like to hear about it, please see Season 1 Episode #23 https://youtu.be/nvyGI6XYgb4). She passed at the young age of 3, and it had such a toll on our family. She was diagnosed on my birthday, and just 4 days after we learned I was pregnant with our twins. It took many months for me to be able to look at pictures and videos of her without tearing up, and even now, 3 years later, I get emotional about her beautiful spirit and how she was taken from us so soon. With our other dog Kramer passing his 16th birthday, I am once again reminded of how short a dog's life is, and how special they get to spend it with us. Today's guest Kristen is a stay-at-home mom who started offering pet doula sessions to her community. We dive into our experiences losing our dogs and explore deeper conversations. I hope you enjoy our conversation. How to tell your story with pride when IVF failed and you are living childless after infertility. When IVF fails and motherhood did not happen, it is so easy to feel like your only option is to hide. You spent years doing everything you possibly could—fertility treatments, doctors' appointments, lifestyle changes, endless waiting. You gave your body, your money, your heart, and your time to the dream of becoming a mom. And despite all of it, you find yourself living childless after infertility. In those moments, it can feel impossible to talk about what really happened. Maybe you have learned to keep quiet because the pain feels too heavy. Maybe you are tired of comments like “You could always adopt” or “At least you can sleep in.” Maybe you worry about making others uncomfortable. But here is the truth: hiding from your infertility story will never create the life you crave. In this episode, I share why there is nothing more beautiful than telling your story, even when IVF failed and motherhood didn't happen. I will show you how owning your infertility story changes the way you see yourself and how others see you, and how telling your story can open the door to a future that feels powerful, grounded, and deeply meaningful. In this episode you will learn: Why you can feel proud of your infertility story even if IVF failed How hiding keeps you small and why telling your truth sets you free What life can feel like when the question “Do you have kids” no longer holds power over you How sharing your story helps you reconnect with your body, your friendships, and your future You may not have the children you dreamed of, but you can still live a life that feels rich, purposeful, and joyful. Your story is not one of failure. Your story is one of strength. And there is nothing more beautiful than learning how to tell it.

If you have a senior dog in your home, when's the right time to bring a new dog into the mix? For longtime dog trainers Kathy Callahan and Helen St. Pierre, the answer isn't simple – it depends – on your dog, your household and your bandwidth. Kathy & Helen share with us what inspired their collaboration on their new book Old Dog, New Dog: Supporting Your Aging Best Friend and Welcoming a New One and open up about the deep emotions that come with caring for senior dogs – including that fear of finding yourself in a “zero dog house.” We'll speak candidly about how to be honest with ourselves about the emotional toll of aging pets, and how to prepare realistically if you're considering adding a puppy (or another adult dog) to your home. Kathy & Helen weigh in on setting appropriate expectations, building a support system, and what to watch for when it comes to changes in your senior dog's health and behavior. We'll also learn the best practices for introductions that will give both your old and new dog the best chance at a harmonious relationship. Whether you're currently living with a beloved old dog, recently said goodbye, or are contemplating what comes next, Kathy & Helen offer guidance, perspective and compassion for wherever you are on the journey. Have you ever thought about your time with your dog as a chapter of your life? For teacher, speaker, and lifelong journaler Patricia Eagle, her story is told in ten chapters – with each devoted to a dog who changed her life. In her new book, Dog Love Stories: The Canines Who Changed Me, Patricia reflects on the love, lessons, and legacies each dog left behind. While some chapters are long and others short, all are deeply meaningful. In this episode, Patricia & I explore the many ways our dogs support us – especially through life's hardest times. She shares how creating rituals around loss has helped her honor and heal from the passing of her dogs, and how these moments can also become celebrations of joy and connection. We also talk about the silly songs we make up for our dogs (yes, Patricia sings one!) and what it means to be a respectful Pet Parent – especially around those in our lives who may not be dog lovers. Trigger Warning: This episode includes themes of pet loss and grief, as well as mentions of the deaths of a spouse and child, and childhood sexual abuse. Welcome back Dog Moms (and Dog Dads)! It's been a long time since I've been here - and in this episode I discuss with my friend Simon Chun about how the recent tariffs affect businesses like ours in the pet industry. Note that I had filmed this on April 30th, 2025, and there have been changes to the tariff news. President Trump called for a 90-day temporary pause on tariffs on May 12th, so our tariff is capped at extra 30%. However, this doesn't change the content of our discussion and the uncertainty our businesses faced in the first half of 2025 and will continue to face. I hope to improve my speaking skills and my editing skills (so I can upload these faster!). Thank you for watching and being a part of my journey. Whether you're looking for something fun to do with your dog or if you need help with a behavior issue, Control Unleashed might be exactly the training class you're looking for. Today, I'm joined by Angie Haines Madden of DogSpeak Training — the trainer my dogs & I have been working with through online Control Unleashed classes over the past several months. A former zookeeper, Angie shares what drew her to the Control Unleashed methodology (developed by Leslie McDevitt) and how it shapes her approach to dog training. I'll be honest — I was skeptical about taking an online training class at first. But it didn't take long to see why Angie's style of teaching works so well. Together, we talk about the power of learning from others, why recording your training sessions is so important (hint: it's all about body language!), and how transformative these skills can be. While my original goal was simply to find something fun to do with Nessie, I quickly discovered that Control Unleashed offers so much more than just games. Angie and I discuss how adaptable the Pattern Games are for a variety of real-world situations, and I share some of the ways we've incorporated them into our daily lives. You'll also get to hear an impromptu coaching session, as Angie helps me work through a challenge Nessie and I are still facing — and why teaching your dog to relax is more important than you may realize. How am I supposed to do daily tasks like cooking, laundry and playing with my kids, while I keep an eye on my kids and dogs.it's hard enough to just parent kids or dogs alone, let alone together - this is a normal experience that nobody talks aboutmanagement, such as baby gates, pens and doors are the best strategy to provide safe spaces for both your kids and your dogs and to allow you to take a break.Like we talked about in Episode 1 of the series, being in the same room isn't enough to keep everyone safe - bites can happen right in front of you if you don't know what to look forparents also wonder if they made a mistake by raising kids and dogs together or if they should not have added another dog to the mixsocial media often makes us doubt our parenting skills or our dog training skills because everyone's lives look so much easier and safer than ours.parents with new babies often feel guilty because their dog is getting the short end of the stick or they wonder if the dog would be better off living elsewhereIf you could use some emotional support in your baby's first year (alongside your dog), don't miss The Pooch Parenting Society, the only program designed to provide ongoing support for families raising kids and dogs together. Today we uncover the disturbing reality behind "The Brick Bible," a so-called illustrated "Lego" Bible aimed at children. Despite being distributed at vacation Bible schools and marketed to believers as containing scripture, this book was actually created by a transgender atheist. We delve into its skewed perspective on faith and its ironic commentary on Old Testament stories, revealing how it attempts to argue against the God of the Bible rather than guide anyone toward Him. We also dive into one of our more controversial topics: pets over kids. We answer some of your pressing questions about why pets are not as important as our own children. Why do people celebrate being childless over starting families? Why are some picking first-class travel over family life? Additionally, we discuss the most effective strategy to combat the Kamala Harris campaign. Will traditional campaign methods resonate with the new female voting bloc?
