The legacy of Lewis Reed, former President of the StLouis Board of Aldermen,is no doubt forever tainted, after being convicted of corruption and bribery. ——— He should also be remembered for overseeing ward reduction and producing a map that offers an opportunity, for the African American community to have parity, on the St.Louis Board of Aldermen. ——— Parity means an equal number of votes, when determining the distribution of resources and making critical decisions about the future of St.Louis City. That's a power that black St.Louis, has never experienced on the Board of Aldermen, the legislative branch of city government. I was privileged last evening to spend close to a hour via zoom with four black candidates, wishing to represent the newly created 14th ward, which combines the old 5th and 3rd wards. Those candidates include, 5th Ward alderman James Page, 3rd Ward alderman Brandon FrAzier-Bosley, 5th Ward businesswoman Ebony Washington and State Representative Rasheen Lamont Aldridge of the 78th legislative district in StLouis. ——— All of the candidates are impressive and well versed on the issues of crime, schools and neighborhood stabilization. ——— All expressed their interest in the restoration of North St.Louis etc. They also pledged to work with the aldermanic black caucus which is important to the empowerment, of the African American community in St.Louis. ——— We have all been witnessed to the fact that, “black faces in high places,” is not the end all that it might suggest, itself to be. ——— I advise you to listen carefully to all of the candidates , running for seats on the board of aldermen, because your choices will determine whether there is real parity, are just the appearance of it. ——— This round of aldermanic elections is a great opportunity for black StLouis,to have a full partnership with white St. Louis but you must choose wisely, are as my late best friend, Attorney Helto Reed jr. would say,”it's the same soup warmed over.” ——— I would also encourage African American community and cultural based organizations, such as the black police and firefighters union, block units and clergy to get involved with the selection of black candidates, for the StLouis Board of Aldermen. ———- This is a great opportunity to move our black communities forward, which won't happen if you allow other groups, to finance and select your leadership. They become puppets and will not put your concerns first and foremost! ———

We're talking local politics on this weeks episode of the Kdhx podcast Tangazo. Tim Person a long time political operative and Michael Wesly Jones editorial columnist for the Stlouis American Newspaper, join me for some lively political repartee, as we take a deeper dive into the Stlouis Aldermanic ward reduction, from 28 down to 14. We begin that discussion looking for winners and losers, only to discover that there were no losers, only winners. Very few people thought that the Stlouis board of aldermen was capable of reducing itself by half. Aldermanic seats of friends, allies and neighborhood disruptions, were on the table but under the leadership of Board of Aldermen President, Lewis Reed, the feat was accomplished with very little rancour. The final draft was unanimously passed by the board and Stlouis Mayor Tishaura O. Jones has indicated that she plans to sign off on it. We paused to acknowledge the political maturation, that we are witnessing from St Louis's top two political leaders, who have a history of being combative, to say the least. Their ability to work together on critical issues putting personal politics aside, such as ward reduction, bodes well for the city of Stlouis. A city that was floundering with high crime and dramatic population loss is now poised to begin the process of becoming a great city once again and the ability of African American leadership, to work together is of vital importance, to the future of St Louis.

Among the local politicians with huge sway over the potential privatization of St. Louis Lambert International Airport is St. Louis Board of Aldermen President Lewis Reed. Host Sarah Fenske gets the politician's thoughts on the city’s exploration of a controversial experiment in privatization. Reed could ultimately prove the swing vote that determines whether an airport lease is approved.
Host Don Marsh talks with incumbent President Lewis Reed, who has held the seat since 2007, along with two key challengers, Alderwoman Megan Green, who currently represents the city’s 15th Ward, and state Senator Jamilah Nasheed, whose 5th District includes the eastern half of St. Louis.
Alderwoman Megan Green, D-15th Ward, has done a lot of campaigning over the last 29 months. Between October 2014 and April 2017, Green ran in three elections to secure a full term representing the ward, which covers parts of the Tower Grove South and Tower Grove East neighborhoods. Pretty soon after that last election, she set her sights on higher office. In the race for president, her main opponents are incumbent Lewis Reed and State Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis. (You can find Reed’s episode of Politically Speaking here, and Nasheed’s episode here.) “I’m running for president of the Board of Aldermen basically because I feel like the status quo in our city is not working, and our city in order to move forward desperately needs some different leadership at the top of the board,” Green said.
St. Louis Board of Aldermen President Lewis Reed is the latest guest on the Politically Speaking podcast. He joined St. Louis Public Radio’s Jason Rosenbaum and Rachel Lippmann to talk about his re-election bid. Reed is squaring off against three other Democratic candidates in the March 5 primary, including Sen. Jamilah Nasheed and Alderwoman Megan Green, D-15th Ward. Both Nasheed and Green have recorded Politically Speaking episodes that will air later this month. A native of Joliet, Illinois, Reed first appeared on the local political scene in the 1990s when he was elected alderman for the 6th Ward, which includes the Midtown and Lafayette Square neighborhoods. In 2007, he successfully challenged Board of Aldermen President Jim Shrewsbury. As board president, Reed joined the powerful Board of Estimate and Apportionment that makes most of the city’s financial decisions. He also appoints aldermanic committees and presides over meetings.
Lewis Reed, according to his bio on the City of St Louis website, "has spent over two decades serving the people of St. Louis in elected office, civic and charitable involvement. He is currently the President of the St. Louis Board of Aldermen and serves as the head of the legislative branch of city government. Reed is the first African-American ever to be elected to this position. "In his time in office," the city website continues, "Lewis has championed many causes including funding recreation centers, creating a one million dollar annual recurring youth crime prevention fund, founding Bike St. Louis and the rebirth of Washington Avenue. He is responsible for passing legislation addressing crime prevention, creating opportunities for at-risk youth, environmental sustainability, as well as neighborhood and economic development. President Reed also passed legislation to establish the first dog park in the City of St. Louis." Here's a look at how the conversation went: Part 1: "If you're going to be in public office/public service... understand people aren't going to carry you on their shoulders down the street and parade you." Reed got into office to find solutions to systemic problems, not to get people to like him. (0:00-19:15) Part 2: Public Safety. Reed is a big supporter of the city's new police chief and director of public safety; he hopes that body cameras are just one part of a holistic suite of solutions that help give citizens opportunities to avoid choosing to commit crimes in the first place. (19:15-26:15) Part 3: A seed, planted in the correct environment, will take root and begin to grow, young Reed was told by his mother. Nancy Reagan's "Say no to drugs" campaign, Lewis argues, failed because she "didn't give the kids anything to say 'Yes' to." What are the right yes seeds to plant in North St Louis? (26:15-34:00) Part 4: Reed's vision for St Louis... "development with a neighborhood, and not to a neighborhood." (34:00-47:45) Dhati Kennedy's beats provide the rhythms behind Tangazo. Andy Heaslet is the show's engineer. Listen to more of Hank's interviews on KDHX from his time filling in for DJ Wilson on Collateral Damage; check out episodes 122-134.

Just a week ahead of the decisive Democratic primary in the St. Louis City mayoral contest, our guest is city Treasurer and mayoral candidate Tishaura Jones. We have also spoken to mayoral candidates Lewis Reed, President of the Board of Aldermen (listen to Lewis on the Future Great City podcast) and Lyda Krewson, Alderwoman for the 28th Ward (listen to Lyda on the Future Great City podcast). From the Tishaura Jones for Mayor website (see her policy statements here): Building on a background as a public servant, financial services professional, and educator, Tishaura O. Jones was sworn in as Treasurer of St. Louis on January 1, 2013. She is the first woman to hold the office in the history of St. Louis and is running for Mayor of the City of St. Louis.
