A lawsuit that accused St. Louis running an “unspeakably hellish” jail has ended in a $4 million settlement. Pending a judge's approval, the settlement would allow at least 16,000 people who were jailed in the now-demolished Workhouse jail to file a claim. ArchCity Defenders Executive Director Blake Strode and Inez Bordeaux, a former Workhouse detainee who became an organizer of the Close the Workhouse campaign, explore the eight-year path to the settlement, and the past and future of the Workhouse.

Success at the Border, Diving into the JFK Papers, Charles Payne & Pity for Alec Baldwin (hour 4) full Ryan Wrecker fills in for Marc Cox on 97.1 FM Talk, covering everything from geopolitics to pop culture. The show kicks off with updates on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, where Zelensky accuses Putin of breaking a ceasefire pledge made during a call with Trump. The team debates whether a ceasefire limited to energy infrastructure is meaningful when bombings continue elsewhere. Meanwhile, they discuss Chuck Schumer's latest comments on government control, likening it to Obama's infamous "you didn't build that" moment. The conversation turns to immigration and crime, with a focus on Trump's mass deportation of violent gang members and the legal battles surrounding it. The ACLU and liberal judges face criticism for opposing the deportations, while Governor Abbott highlights the drastic drop in illegal border crossings under Trump—from 3,000 per day in El Paso to just nine. The team also touches on prison conditions in St. Louis, debating the demolition of the infamous Workhouse jail and plans to replace it with a vague "memory marker." In a deep dive into the newly released JFK files, Ryan shares some of the most intriguing discoveries, including a CIA agent who fled the U.S. in fear after the assassination, only to be found dead months later in an alleged suicide. Other files reveal covert surveillance of the Cuban embassy and some embarrassing personal details of KGB agents. The hosts joke about how long it will take to sift through 80,000+ documents to uncover more secrets. The episode wraps up with entertainment news, including Alec Baldwin's awkward red carpet moment where his wife publicly scolds him, and a bizarre staged protest outside the New York Stock Exchange, where activists lay on the ground with handmade tombstones to protest Elon Musk's cuts to government spending. 1884 Wed, 19 Mar 2025 14:32:13 +0000 0qbnatObB5M68usnd31kuozXKsSDI7jd united states, donald trump, news, elon musk, trump, ryan wrecker, kim st onge, marccoxmorningshow, politics, news commentary The Marc Cox Morning Show united states, donald trump, news, elon musk, trump, ryan wrecker, kim st onge, marccoxmorningshow, politics, news commentary Success at the Border, Diving into the JFK Papers, Charles Payne & Pity for Alec Baldwin (hour 4) The Marc Cox Morning Show is your home for no-nonsense conversation. It's often impossible to find direct accounts of poor people in the historical record, especially the further back you look. But an extraordinary collection containing thousands of letters written by people in poverty between 1834 and 1900 provides an insight into their lives.     In this episode, Chloe Lee speaks to specialist Paul Carter about letters held by The National Archives which were addressed to the Poor Law Board, the British central poor law authority. Together they use these accounts to glimpse into the factories, the workhouses and slums in which so many vulnerable people lived out their lives.   For a transcript and information about the documents used in this episode visit our show notes: https://bit.ly/PVoices   This podcast is based on the research In Their Own Write, a major AHRC-funded project, running from 2018 to 2021, which uses letters from paupers and other poor people, and associated manuscript material such as petitions, sworn statements and advocate letters (those written on behalf of paupers) to investigate the lives of the poor between 1834 and 1900. The Project was led by Professor Steve King (Nottingham Trent University) and Dr Paul Carter, (The National Archives).

Our conversation will also bring to light the admission process, the religious practices, and the medical care offered to these inmates. This isn't your regular history lesson - we're going beyond the facts to grasp the human experience inside these walls. But hold on; our journey doesn't end there! We will discuss the concept of scattered homes that emerged in the 1890s, and the differences between them and cottage homes. We'll try to understand how children within the workhouse system fared compared to those outside of it, and how Peter Higginbottom's fascination with workhouses led him to create his detailed database. This is more than just retracing history; it's about understanding how the past has left an indelible imprint on the present. Another significant measure passed by the Grey government was a lot less creditable than the Great Reform Act or Abolition of Slavery. The 1834 Poor Law mandated the construction of workhouses and set out to achieve the aim of making public assistance to the unemployed, sick or old, a lot less pleasant than work – an aim often pursued by politicians today as well and which it achieved. It wasn't that which brought Grey down, however. It was that constant bugbear of British governments, Ireland. Emancipation hadn't quietened tempers among the Catholic Irish, it had merely refocused anger on another issue, the requirement on the Irish, the majority Catholic, to pay for the support of the Church of Ireland, the equivalent in the island of the Church of England, which was Protestant and immensely wealthy. The effort to do something about that grievance, however, opened splits in the Cabinet, and the resignation of Ministers. In the end, that culminated in the resignation of the Prime Minister himself. Earl Grey was gone. Illustration: Cartoon of the interior of a Workhouse. Episode No. 558 features author Hugh Eakin and artist Jordan Weber.  Eakin is the author of "Picasso's War: How Modern Art Came to America," which tells a story of how New York City slowly, eventually, came to embrace both European modernism and the art of Pablo Picasso. Eakin's history begins with John Quinn, a white-shoe attorney with a yen for progressive literature and art, and follow's Quinn's involvement and influence across New York and Europe, through the Armory Show, Alfred Barr, and more. The book is full of original research, new angles that give life to once-ossified narratives, and bright, well-paced prose. Indiebound and Amazon offer it for about $33.  Jordan Weber discusses "All Our Liberations," an art installation and space for community learning, reflection and healing organized by the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in Saint Louis. The project, which runs from July 16-24, takes place at the Spring Church near the Pulitzer in Saint Louis's Grand Center Arts District. The project includes a three-tiered sculpture Weber made with black obsidian stones and participation from collaborators Weber met during a 2021 residency. During the week-long program Weber will host programs for both formerly incarcerated individuals and members of the public. Urban farmers, healers, and organizers from Close the Workhouse -- a Saint Louis-area campaign working to end mass incarceration -- are Weber's programming co-host. In April 2023, Weber will expand "All Our Liberation" as part of Counterpublic, a city-wide triennial.

Wednesday, 6 April 2022, 12:30 – 1:30pm ‘“They attached no blame to the staff in charge”: The Role of Dublin Workhouse Officials in Preventing and Contributing to Institutional Mortality, 1872-1913' a seminar by Shelby Zimmerman (TCD) as part of the Medical and Health Humanities Lunchtime Seminar Series in association with Trinity Long Room Hub. The Trinity College Dublin Medical and Health Humanities Initiative brings together researchers from a wide range of disciplines including history, philosophy, sociology, drama, health sciences, religion, cultural studies, arts, literature and languages. Medical and health humanities seeks to provide insights into the cultural and social contexts within which diverse but interrelated concerns such as the human condition, the individual experience of illness and suffering, and the way medicine is (or was) practiced, might be understood. The Trinity College Dublin Medical and Health Humanities initiative seeks to cultivate a richer understanding of the interactions and synergies between practices and discourses of wellness, health or medicine and the arts, humanities or culture through interdisciplinary research and education. During the Great Famine from 1845 to 1852, the Irish workhouse was associated in the public consciousness with dying and the mistreatment of the dead. By the end of the nineteenth century, the role of the workhouse shifted from poor relief to medical relief and thus became the largest and most accessible medical institution for the poor. Despite the workhouse's newfound status as a medical institution, it was still plagued by the reputation of its Famine counterpart. Through an analysis of the North and South Dublin Unions, this paper will examine whether that stigma was warranted in post-Famine Dublin. It will look at the treatment of inmates to ascertain whether the Board of Guardians and medical officers were complicit in mortality rates. It will analyse ward management and staffing to determine whether negligence was inherent or a reflection on the medical officers. This paper will also examine how the Guardians responded to infectious disease and whether it revealed different attitudes towards different classes of inmates. Ultimately, this paper will determine if workhouse staff sought to reduce institutional mortality or contributed to the workhouse's stigma. Speaker Biography Shelby Zimmerman is a PhD candidate at Trinity College Dublin studying the medicalisation of death in the Dublin city workhouses from 1872 to 1920 centring on the role the workhouse played in Dublin's medical landscape for the sick and dying poor. She is primarily interested in the history of medicine, institutions, the Irish Poor Law, poverty, and death. She received her BS in History and Museum Studies from Towson University in Maryland and her MPhil with Distinction from Trinity College Dublin in Modern Irish History. Shelby is an Early Career Researcher in the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts & Humanities Research Institute. She is also the co-curator of the Little Museum of Dublin's upcoming exhibition on Victorian medicine.

This time, we're turning the cruel, inhumane image of Victorian workhouses on its head. Josie Long heads to a Suffolk village to unravel the evolution of poor laws as well as the birth of modern health and social care. Framlingham Castle once served as a workhouse, lodgings and administrative centre of relief for the area's poor and needy. So what was life really like for poor people here between the 17th  and 19th centuries? Historian Dr Jeremy Ashbee joins Josie to explore the lesser-known social history of this renowned castle and the vision of local MP Sir Robert Hitcham, who purchased it in the 1630s. Anthony Wooding, a member of the Framlingham Castle Volunteers, takes Josie inside the castle to share stories of the people who lived in and passed through Framlingham in its workhouse years. And workhouse historian Peter Higginbotham explains how attitudes to the poor and the rights and freedoms of individuals have changed through the centuries. Speaking with Shadows is an English Heritage podcast. The Occoquan Workhouse is now an artist's guild and museum, but it was a crowded and occasionally corrupt prison that was part of the Washington D.C. prison system until it closed in 2001. The Workhouse is mostly known for its relation to the Women's Suffrage Movement; what was known as the “Darkest Day of Prison” which happened on November 14, 1917, but the days leading up to this night was also horrific when suffragettes were arrested they spent June through December of 1917 in Occoquan Workhouse as prisoners (the wood buildings they stayed in no longer stand). During the time leading up to this night the women faced gruesome conditions and were notably fed maggots, aggressively forced fed with a tube by it being shoved down their nose and raw eggs dumped into the tube, or they were not fed at all. Show Notes In the tradition of our annual holiday episodes, I've gone a little wild with the title of today's episode. Today, I'll read you a Christmas Ballad titled “It is Christmas Day in the Workhouse,” which was first published in the 1870s  and which floats around with several variant titles. Before that, though, I'll share a mini biography of its author, English journalist, poet, dramatist, and novelist George R. Sims. But first! let's take a quick trip around the world in George R. Sims's lifetime: Around the World Feb 11 1847 - Thomas Edison is Born 1848 marked the beginning of several revolutions against European monarchies, notably in Sicily, France, Germany, Italy, and the Austrian Empire April 10 1848 - Chartists gather across the Thames from the Houses of Parliament  for a demonstration in which they planned to march en masse to deliver a petition, but police had them trapped and the event ended with a fizzle rather than a bang Jul 4 1855 - Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" Is Published 1868 - Elizabeth Blackwell establishes a Women's Medical College Nov 17 1877 - Charles Darwin received an Honorary Doctorate of Law from Cambridge University During Darwin's honorary degree ceremony, a prankster dangled this stuffed monkey dressed in academic robes from the gallery of the Senate House, which 'excited some mirth'. April 1888- February 1891 the Whitechapel Murders were committed by an unidentified person who came to be known as Jack the Ripper Sep 23 1889 - Nintendo Founded to produce handmade hanafuda cards 1899 - Kate Chopin Publishes "The Awakening" Sep 8 1903 - The American Federation Of Labor Grants A Charter To Granite Quarry Workers Feb 2 1914 the first film featuring Charlie Chaplin, "Making a Living," is released Jan 11 1922 - Researcher John Macleod and chemist James Collip administered the first dose of their newly developed Insulin Injection to 14yo diabetic, Leonard Thompson George R. Sims Bio George R. Sims was born 2 September 1847 to father, George Sims, and mother, Louisa Amelia Ann Stevenson Sims. He would be the first of the couple's six children. Between them, they raised their children with the London theater and progressive politics. Louisa was a president of the Women's Provident League and her father, Chartist leader John Dinmore Stevenson, lived with the family. Sims began writing for in school, where he quickly began to publish poetry and journalism in The College Gazette and later  The Welcome Guest, Fun, Weekly Dispatch, and The Referee. For The Referee, he wrote a popular column of miscellany called 'Mustard and Cress' under the pseudonym 'Dagonet' from 1877 until he died. And it is under that pseudonym that he reported, from 1888-1891 on the Whitechapel Murders.  His best-known ballad is “It Is Christmas Day in the Workhouse,” which was often parodied during his lifetime but which struck me as having strong ‘eat the rich' vibes in a Christmas season marked by the exploitation of wage workers here in the US.  [transition music] Click here to read the poem! [transition music] Thank you for listening! I hope you all have a happy Christmas Eve. Keep an eye on our feed for a second holiday episode from Eleanor.  Take care!
