A 30-foot-wide hole caused by a century-old water main tore open beneath I-44 downtown nearly two weeks ago. Though crews are actively filling and stabilizing the area, questions remain. Craig Leipold may be one of downtown St. Paul's biggest boosters. He's the owner of the Minnesota Wild, and his company manages the venues that bring two million people downtown every year for games, concerts and other events: the Grand Casino Arena, the Saint Paul RiverCentre and Roy Wilkins Auditorium. This year, he expanded his sports franchises to include a new women's volleyball team that he hopes will attract even more fans to downtown. And he just became majority owner of the historic St. Paul Hotel, the century-old hotel overlooking Rice Park where he stays on the top floor when he isn't home in Racine, Wis. MPR News host Angela Davis talks with Leipold about his career, the business of sports, being a dad of five sons and what's ahead for downtown St. Paul.

Hour 2 opens with a heated breakdown of the proposed “anti-weaponization” compensation fund, framed as a broader argument over political targeting, legal precedent, and whether government actions against Trump and January 6 defendants justify a payout structure. The conversation escalates into a pointed critique of political figures and federal agencies, setting a combative tone for the hour. The focus then shifts to St. Louis in the Morning Brief, where the long-delayed Millennium Hotel demolition and proposed riverfront redevelopment spark a larger debate over downtown revitalization, public funding, safety, and whether private investment will ever realistically return without structural change to city conditions. A sharp turn follows into a corporate lawsuit involving Edward Jones, with strong disagreement over claims of racial discrimination tied to compensation structures and recruiting practices in financial services. The discussion leans heavily into industry experience, attrition rates, and how advisory firms actually build new talent pipelines. Nicole Murray joins for the news block, covering markets, healthcare expansion in St. Louis, Waymo testing despite regulatory setbacks, a major Google data center investment in Missouri, rising mortgage rates, a paused federal AI executive order, and a viral reaction to Hooters attempting a “family-friendly” rebrand, which triggers a broader culture discussion. The hour closes with “In Other News,” ranging from the disappearance of the name “Vance” from baby name rankings, a landlord caught on hidden camera in a compromising situation, a live frog found in grocery lettuce, a breakdown of dinosaur anatomy theory around T-Rex arms, and media reaction to Stephen Colbert's final show featuring Paul McCartney. The “St. Louis Morning Brief” covers a series of major local controversies beginning with St. Charles voting 7-1 to permanently block large-scale data centers after intense public backlash over development concerns. The crew also reacts to the conviction of a former Manchester-area Boy Scout leader accused of using troop funds for personal expenses before pivoting into a bizarre revelation that The Walt Disney Company consultants advised downtown St. Louis officials to visually disguise vacant buildings with neutral paint colors to improve visitors' perception of safety during major events. Marc and Kim mock the city's “paint over the problem” strategy while discussing Disney's declining movie reputation and the upcoming Mandalorian film featuring Grogu, better known as Baby Yoda. The segment closes with analysis of the escalating legal battle between the St. Louis Police Board and city officials over a disputed $67 million budget shortfall tied to state policing mandates and Rams settlement money. St. Louis' downtown has its share of well-documented challenges: large-scale vacancies, companies moving their offices and streets that can feel devoid of activity. The city has made progress on two prominent vacant buildings in its downtown the past year, but rebounding from what the Wall Street Journal has described as a “real estate nightmare” will take many more years. STLPR economic development reporter Eric Schmid talks about efforts to revitalize downtown and recent successes in bringing business and residency to the neighborhood.
